At each workshop, the museum gives each family fresh-baked gingerbread house pieces and a container of royal icing. Once the family’s house is assem-bled, kids can choose from a wide variety of candy and edible deco-rations to bring their plain brown house to life. Holiday music plays

The cost of the workshop is $30 per family for Children’s Museum members and $40 per family for non-members (up to 4 people). Additional participants in a family are $5 each.

PORTSMOUTH -On December 10, South
Africa’s “Berg River Choir” will give a performance at South Church, 292 State Street, Ports-mouth, NH at 7:30 p.m. The 63-voiced choir will sing a con-cert of both sacred and secular music. Members of “Voices from the Heart,” which is host-ing the South African choir’s Portsmouth visit, will join them for two songs. “We're so very excited to welcome this choir to Portsmouth,” says Voices' Direc-tor, Joanne Connolly. “We are hoping to plan a musical tour to South Africa and now, South Africa is coming to us!! This is such an opportunity and honor for Voices, and such a musical gift to the Seacoast!”
“In 2001, Sharing a New Song, a greater Boston-based community chorus, travelled to Piketberg, in the Berg River dis-trict of South Africa, to sing with a choir from the local Dutch Reformed Church, which had black members only,” Connolly recounted. “While the nearby
whites-only Dutch Reformed church collaborated on this ex-change by hosting the Ameri-cans in their homes and feeding them lunch, almost no members of that church attended the con-cert,” she said.
“However, the concert itself was so successful, that the white church asked if they could host the combined choirs when Sharing a New Song returned in 2012,” Connolly continued. “This time, everyone was in-vited to the white church and all singers were served supper. It was the first time that blacks were in the white church. Al-though apartheid legally ended in 1991, many vestiges of that separation still exist today. Even more amazing, the leaders of the white church then asked if the singers would join them in December of that year to sing a joint Christmas concert there. That began a remarkable col-laboration between these two choirs, one that was repeated
of “Huzzah, Huzzah!” Songs from England, Ireland, Africa, Germany and France, from the famous Leonard Cohen, “Hal-lelujah” to South African songs of celebration and joy!
“We're very excited to have a guest conductor, sing-ing with us, and conducting an exciting Ghanian piece,” says Director Joanne Connolly. “Ben Amakye-Boateng is with
us from Ghana just this semes-ter. He is a visiting scholar and musician working with UNH. It's been a wonderful cultural exchange having Ben with us.”
Tickets are $10 in ad-vance, $12 at the door. Tickets are available at Riverrun Book-store in Portsmouth and on line at brownpapertickets.com. Contact Con Tutti at 207-451-9346 with any questions.

The City has been operating the Downtown Portsmouth Parking Shuttle since May. from noon to 10 p.m. The shut-tle loops every 10 minutes and parking is free at the C3 Lot.
According to Peter Rice, Director of Public Works, there has been sustained interest in the shuttle and public support for continuing the service into the winter. “While we initially planned to operate this service only in the summer, we contin-ue to receive positive feedback from the riders as well as from employees, downtown patrons, business owners and the gener-al public on this pilot program. PORTSMOUTH – A perpetual recipient of
high ratings, Service Credit Union received a financial strength rating of “A” or ex-cellent mark from the nation’s leading independent provider of ratings and analyses of finan-cial services companies, mutual funds and stocks.
Weiss Ratings’ “A or Excel-lent” rating recognizes Service Credit Union as an outstanding financial institution offering exceptional financial stability for its more than 192,000 mem-bers. Weiss has awarded Service Credit Union with top ratings for several consecutive years.
Each quarter, Weiss Rat-ings evaluates the financial strength of more than 19,000 financial institutions, including life and annuity insurers, health insurers, property and casu-alty insurers, banks and credit unions.
“We are honored that Weiss Ratings consistently acknowl-edges Service Credit Union’s exceptional financial strength
Warren Buffet, the “Oracle from Omaha,”
is considered one of the most successful investors in
history. Yet while the invest-ment world may seem com-plex, Mr. Buffet’s advice is ac-tually pretty simple. Here are a few Buffet quotes, along with some suggestions on putting them to use:
“Whether we’re talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down.”
Essentially, this means you should look for good in-vestment vehicles whose price may have dropped. A “bear” market tends to drag down many stocks — even those with strong fundamentals and favorable prospects. These stocks might then be consid-ered “bargains.” One way to determine whether a stock is “expensive” or “cheap” is by looking at its price-to-earnings ratio (P/E). For example, if Company “A” has a share price of $20 and earnings per share of $4, then it has a P/E of 5. On the other hand, if Company “B” has the same share price of $20, but has earnings per share of $2, its P/E would be 10. So it would be considered more expensive than Compa-ny “A.” Be aware, though, that the P/E ratio works better as a measure of cost when you are comparing two companies in the same industry.
“Time is the friend of the wonderful business, the enemy of the mediocre.”
Be prepared to own qual-ity stocks for the long term; over time, your confidence may be re-warded. On the other hand, if an investment is not of high quality, its flaws will be revealed over the years.
“If investors insist on trying to time their participation in equities, they should try to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful.”
Trying to “time” the market — that is, attempting to buy when prices are low and sell when prices are high — is a difficult task. Too many people do just the opposite: They try to “cut their losses” by selling when the market is down and then go after the “hot” investment whose price may already be as high as it’s going to go. Mr. Buffet clearly is not in favor of a market timing approach, and those who try to do it, he says, are probably better off by going against the crowd. Keep in mind, though, that even when holding invest-ments rather than trying to time the market, investing in equities does involve risk, including po-tential loss of principal.
“When we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding period is forever.”
When should you sell good investments? Never, according to Mr. Buffet. And while this endless holding period may not be possible for all of us, you get the idea: the longer you keep a good investment, the better off
you may be when you do sell.
"The line separating investment and speculation, which is never bright and clear, becomes blurred still further when most market participants have recently enjoyed triumphs. Nothing sedates rationality like large
doses of effortless money.”The lesson here? Be an in-
vestor, not a speculator. A long run-up in the market can in-crease your wealth, but it may also make you prone to risky behavior if you think that all your investments will rise in-definitely.
As an investor, you may
well want to consider Mr. Buffet’s ideas— after all, they’ve sure worked well for him.

and stability,” says Gordon Sim-mons, President/CEO of Service Credit Union. “Our members’ money and financial future is of utmost importance to us and we value their trust in Service Credit Union.”
According to Weiss Rat-ings, the rating recognizes Ser-vice Credit Union as a “credit union offering outstanding fi-nancial stability for its members, vendors and employees.” The rating is “a true distinction.” Ser-vice Credit Union is considered to be among the elite with this rating distinction.
Weiss Ratings is the na-tion’s leading independent pro-
vider of bank, credit union and insurance company financial strength ratings and sovereign debt ratings. Weiss accepts no payment or other compensa-tion for its ratings from rated institutions.

PORTSMOUTH – Ten Thousand Villages, a
nonprofit retail store in Ports-mouth, is inviting the commu-nity to shop for the holidays and to benefit Families First Health & Support Center, from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 14.
The purchase of a unique, handcrafted gift from Ten Thou-sand Villages will not only sup-
port Families First, but will im-prove the livelihoods of artisans in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. For more than 60 years, Ten Thousand Villages has established fair, long-term buying relationships in places where skilled artisans lack opportunities for stable income. All artisans are fairly paid for their products.
Fifteen percent of the after-noon’s proceeds will be donated to Families First, a community health center whose mission is to provide a broad range of health and family services to all, regard-less of ability to pay.
For details, visit www.Fam-iliesFirstSeacoast.org or call 603-422-8208. Ten Thousand Villages is at 87 Congress St., Portsmouth.
“We appreciate what Liz and her staff have done all the years they’ve hosted the event,” she said. “It will help us deliver more services to more youth, which is obviously huge.” “Spinning Generosity” raised $7,515 in 2011, $9,174 in 2012, and $13,680 in 2013 with the hope of topping $15,000 in 2014. There will be 24 spin bikes available and anyone can par-ticipate by spinning or donat-ing. Spinners are asked to make a minimum donation of $10 toward the designated charity. Donations may also be mailed directly to LizFit c/o Spinna-ker Point Recreation Center, 30 Spinnaker Way, Portsmouth.

DOVER – Families raising chil-
dren on the autism spectrum are invited to the Children's Museum of New Hampshire, 6 Washington Street, Dover, for a free visit on Sunday, De-cember 7 from 10 a.m. to noon. The museum's “Exploring Our Way” Autism Partnership Pro-gram offers a monthly oppor-tunity for families to explore the museum when it is closed to the general public. These monthly sessions are gener-ously sponsored by the Abbie F. Moseley Charitable Trust.
During the school year, “Exploring Our Way” is held on the first Sunday of each month. At each session, fami-lies with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders are in-vited to visit the museum at no cost. A different regional expert is on hand at each ses-sion to answer questions and provide resources to families.
Paula Rais, Vice Presi-dent of Development and Community Engagement for the Children’s Museum of NH, stated that the program
has been very well received. “Since we began this program more than four years ago, we have been averaging nearly 100 people at each monthly session,” she said. “Feedback from partici-pants has been overwhelmingly positive. We are delighted to be able to provide a community setting where the whole family feels comfortable and has fun together.”
“Exploring Our Way” takes place when the Children’s Museum is closed to the public and offers families a chance to explore the museum together, with support as needed from museum staff, trained volun-teers, and special materials that include mapping tools and social stories. No reservations are necessary, and families are welcome to stay and play after the museum opens to the public at noon.
The program began in March 2010 with inaugural funding from the Cogswell Be-nevolent Trust. For more in-formation, please contact pro-gram coordinator Paula Rais at [email protected].

Dear Computer Lady,Can you help me get BING
completely off my computer? I hate it and the way it just takes over your computer. Thanks, Lynda
Dear Lynda,Bing is a product of Mi-
crosoft, so of course they want it to be part of your life. You can, however, get rid of it completely. Lets start by removing any Bing toolbars or search items in the Control Panel. 1. The easiest way to get to the Control Panel in Windows 8, is to tap the win-dows logo key on your keyboard, then type, "Control Panel" in the search box, and click on Control Panel in the search results. 2. Once in the Control Panel, click on, "Uninstall a Program". 3. It might take a minute for all your installed programs to load, but once they do, find any Bing prod-ucts, click on it once, then click, "Uninstall" in the toolbar at the top of the list. 4. Repeat if there is more than one Bing product in
the list. Once you have removed
products there, it is time to remove Bing from your browser. 1. Go back to the Control Panel, and click on, "Network and Internet". 2. Click on "Internet Options". 3. In the Internet Properties dialog box, start on the, "General" tab and make sure your home page is set to a page you want. Change it if necessary. 4. Now, click on the, "Programs" tab and click the button that says, "Manage add-ons". 5. Look through the list of toolbars and extensions and disable any unwanted items. 6. Click on, "Search Providers" in the left column, click on "Bing" in the right column, then click the "Remove" button in the lower- right corner of the dialog box. 7. Close all the open dialog boxes, and you should be all set. Elizabeth
Dear Computer Lady,First of all I would like to tell
you how much I love your news-letter and I always learn some-thing from each and every one of
them. My question is the follow-ing. I have Norton antivirus. If I installed the Malwarebytes pro-gram, would it interfere with my antivirus program? l don’t think it will but I just wanted to make sure. Thank you! Carol
Dear Carol,No, Malwarebytes will not
interfere with any of the antivirus programs, in fact, I run Malware-bytes and AVG Internet Security 2015 on my computer together, and they work fine. Today, there seems to be a lot more malware infections on computers than virus infections. This doesn't mean that you don't need anti-virus, but it does mean that you need to be sure you are also pro-tected from malware.
Did you know that cy-bercriminals want to enlist your computer in their network of computer (called a botnet) which they then use to commit crimes? These criminals distrib-ute malware that can turn your computer into a bot. When this
happens, you computer can per-form automated tasks over the internet without your knowledge. Your computer could be used to send out spam email messages, spread viruses, attack computers and commit other kinds of crime and fraud. This slows down your computer, and sometimes causes it to crash frequently. Good mal-ware protection will keep your
computer running faster, and keep the bad guys (criminals) from using your system. Elizabeth

PORTSMOUTH / NORTHWOOD -
Mary Doane, the founder of Mary’s Dogs, is pleased her rescue and adoption organiza-tion has grown from her home in Deerfield to a two-story, 1800s federal-style house and property along Route 4 in Northwood near Coe-Brown Academy.
This home offers canine daycare and boarding and ful-fills a quarantine need for the dogs rescued from high-kill cen-ters in the South. A 2012 New Hampshire state law mandated a 48-hour quarantine period for dogs at a licensed facility before heading to an adopting family.
Doane supported the law but knew when it was passed by the New Hampshire legislature that her operating model would have to change – and would re-quire an actual facility rather than the improvised methods she had employed since found-ing Mary’s Dogs in 2011.
“We were never going to get anywhere without a center for dogs who were already ad-opted and for daycare, board-ing and other activities,” Doane said.
The concept is also de-signed to strengthen the ties with fellow dog lovers in the
South, for example, by provid-ing support for mobile units to neuter and spay dogs free of charge. “We are creating a circle by helping what’s really going on down South. It’s a small dent but an important part of the solution,” Doane explained. “Even if it’s only a small percentage, we needed the income stream from the inn to help support these pro-grams.”
Finding the right location for Mary’s Dog Inn was an 18-month, multi-property journey. “At first we wanted to keep in the immediate Seacoast region, preferably in Exeter area. We had seven to eight properties under contract but for zoning and other reasons they never worked out,” she said. Final-ly, everything came together earlier this year with the two-acre Northwood property. The house was in good condition

She would do best in a home where she is the only dog. Still an active girl, she enjoys going for walks and playing with her squeaky toys. She is also happy to relax and cuddle with you on the couch. This sweet girl is looking for a retirement home where she can enjoy her senior days! Age: 10 years; Sex: Spayed Female; Breed: Ameri-can Pit Bull/Rottweiler.

with a backyard (now double-fenced) suitable for plenty of canine romping.
In addition to a $170,000 cost for the house and property, more than $50,000 has been in-vested in upgrades and renova-tions for Mary’s Dogs Inn. But Doane said the wait for the right place has been worth it and she’s particularly grateful for Kennebunk Savings Bank and its Hampton branch manager for backing her effort through the challenging process.
“Jim Carrigan was great and hung in there with us be-cause we had a heck of a time finding a suitable property,” she said. “I don’t know if a larger bank would have done the same.”
Mary’s Dogs and Ken-nebunk Savings Bank are Busi-ness Partners of the Green Al-liance, a Portsmouth organiza-tion representing over 100 local green businesses, along with nearly 4,000 consumer mem-bers.
Doane and her staff are now moving full steam ahead to make the Mary’s Dogs Inn a home away from home for their canine guests with an emphasis of quality over quan-tity. “We want to keep it small with perhaps 10 canine guests
at a time and they will never be unattended,” she said. “We have someone living at the inn and the entire downstairs will be the boarding area. We also want this to the place for those families who have never board-ed their dogs before. This is not a typical boarding situation be-cause we’ve created an environ-ment that we would want for our own dogs.”

The International City/County Management Asso-ciation (ICMA) has recognized Dover for its performance man-agement efforts with a Certifi-cate of Achievement from the ICMA Center for Performance Analytics.
“The certificate program recognizes the principles of performance management,” said Randall H. Reid, ICMA Director of Performance Initia-tives. “Jurisdictions meeting the qualifications have demon-strated leadership in continuous improvement and community engagement, and they serve as examples for other governments to follow.”
ICMA assesses a local gov-ernment’s performance manage-ment program and encourages analysis of results by compar-ing to peers and gauging perfor-mance over time. Performance management aids in cost reduc-tion, program prioritization, and quality improvement. It also encourages accountability and transparency. Certificates are awarded at the levels of Achieve-ment, Distinction, and Excel-lence. Dover is among nine juris-dictions receiving the Certificate of Achievement, and one of 49 recognized overall.
Criteria for the Certificate of Achievement include: Report-
NORTH HAMPTON – A company founded by two
local entrepreneurs conducts its business by conscientiously lead-ing and helping others to embrace their better selves, a synergy that has the potential to help more than just the company and those involved.
“‘Get it Going’ is a way of life. We are a company inspiring people to take action. We believe everyone has a ‘GiG’ something they are passionate about doing. Our message is simple, go for it, ‘Get it Going,’” says co-owner, Jill Spring of ‘Get it Going’, a lifestyle and apparel company. “Our GiG is this company. And we’re having a great time getting it going.”
‘Get it Going’ sells respon-sibly sourced, made-in-the-USA apparel and goods, including T-shirts, hoodies, tank tops, and long sleeve shirts. Spring and Goyette established the company to spread and encourage positive movement in the community and beyond. Their initial focus will be on road race, fundraiser and event tees and apparel.
“It’s a natural initial fit,” explains Natasha. “There are so many races and events that have fundraising for a worthy cause at the forefront and we say,
PORTSMOUTH – Purely Organic Lawn Care
was started in 2003 when owner Jay Palladino made an unfor-tunate connection between his golden retriever getting sick and the newly-applied fertilizer on the lawn at his Kensington home.
While organic lawn care clicked as a business model, Pal-ladino admits he was in unchar-tered territory. “I knew nothing about using organics and gro-wing grass,” he said. While his small company struggled to find its footing, Palladino said the early challenges were due to a marketplace unprepared for their brand and not fully ready to emb-race sustainability.
“We were ahead of our time,” he said. “Most people pre-ferred using chemicals and didn’t give much thought to what it was doing to the water supply or the health of their family.”
Consumer awareness about chemicals on lawns has chan-ged dramatically in the past few
ing of performance data to the public through budgets, news-letters, and/or information pro-vided to elected officials; data verification efforts to ensure reli-ability; and staff training.
City of Dover Director of Planning and Community De-velopment Christopher Parker, AICP, said the Certificate of Achievement is recognition of Dover’s longstanding commit-ment to a management frame-work that instills performance excellence. “We’re pleased to be recognized by ICMA for perfor-mance management excellence,” Parker said. “All City of Dover staff are dedicated to a core set of values that dictate how we oper-ate, including customer-focused service, integrity, innovation, accountability and stewardship. These core values are the foun-dation of our mission to provide affordable, high-quality munici-pal services and responsive local government.”
Parker added the City of Dover continually reviews its operations and performance metrics to maintain and improve efficiency. “We regularly review our metrics to better assess and improve customer service,” Parker said. “In addition, this information is shared with elect-ed officials and the public. The City’s website includes several years of best practices recogni-tion, much of which is the result of our continued assessment of services, and City Manager J. Michael Joyal, Jr., includes even more detailed information in his report to the City Council each month. These reports are also available to the public online.”
Dover is one of fewer than 10 communities nationwide to receive the Certificate of Achievement from the ICMA Center for Performance Analyt-ics.
“It’s rewarding to be rec-ognized as one of a handful of communities that excels at best practices in performance man-agement,” City Manager J. Mi-chael Joyal, Jr. said. “Although we’re constantly evaluating how we can improve customer ser-vice, this recognition is the result of the hard work and dedication of City staff and department leaders committed to the City’s mission and core values.”

“yes” lets do it right and make the whole race or event positive and sustainable. If you are organiz-ing a 5k to fund your sisters battle with cancer or a wine tasting to support a food pantry, why not be sure your event tees are in line with your mission?”
‘Get it Going’ shares the inspiring stories of their “GiG-stars”, charitable events, and ap-parel. As part of their mission to be a transparent company they are blogging about their personal stories, bloopers, learning-curve challenges, and small successes they experience daily as a new business.
‘Get it Going’ is a culmina-
tion of a decade Spring and Goy-ette each spent traveling and ex-ploring the world. “Neither of us took the road most traveled,” says Goyette. “We definitely lived a ‘Get-it-Going’ lifestyle long before this ‘business’ idea came to mind.”
Goyette’s “Get it Going” moment? Following the loss of her family friend’s triplets, it sud-denly struck her: Why not trans-form this tragedy into something palpable, powerful and positive? A few phone calls later, Goyette had set in motion a memorial in honor of the Wilkins’ boys.

years. Palladino said the shift has led to major growth spurts in resi-dential and commercial demand for safer and greener lawn care.
And the 2014 summer lawn season has proven to be the bu-siest yet. With licenses to opera-te in NH, Maine and Mass., the company handles a wide range of regional lawn care and land-scaping assignments – from ticks and mosquitos, to grubs and snow in the winter. They also offers weed and crabgrass mana-gement, aeration, soil enhance-ment and soil testing as well as
lime applications; all of it done with an eye on minimal environ-mental impact.
The organic lawn care mo-vement is anything but a passing fad as more states and municipa-lities demand fewer chemicals in fertilizers due to increased con-cern about run-off into the water table or fragile aquatic ecosy-stems. For instance, New Castle is looking to restrict fertilizer use on lawns in shoreland and wet-land zones.
Last year, Purely Organic introduced a hybrid solution to
their treatments after finding that there is not always an orga-nic solution to every lawn issue.
“What the hybrid program does is allows us to use traditio-nal control products only when we feel it absolutely necessary,” said Jason Lefebvre of Purely Organic.
Even when using the hybrid program, Purely Organic mai-ntains its initial goal of keeping the environmental risks to a minimum. The hybrid program is still 75 percent natural/orga-nic. And once a property starts to return to a satisfactory state, treatments can be switched from the hybrid program to the orga-nic program.
Palladino decided a few years ago, to make it an employ-ee-owned operation giving ow-nership stakes to employees as re-cognition for their contributions.
