Acoustic performances of acoustic absorption (alpha sabine) tested in a reverberant room,conform to the new regulations concerning acoustic correction in communal spaces inbuildings (applicable since January 1996, decree of 28.10.94).

After the degree of 03.04.25 relating to the limitation of noise in teaching establishments;play areas in primary schools, music rooms, study rooms, dining rooms, sports halls,the following norms have to be followed according to the type of room, the performanceof the material used (α M) and the reverberation time (TR):0,4 < TR < 0,8 for volumes ≤ 250 m3 (A) 0,6 < TR < 1,2 for volumes ≤ 250 m3 (B)

It is necessary to have a wall cladding with an acoustic material (S) defined as follows:

Thanks to calculations carried out under the guidelines of CERTU and computer models such as MITRA (CSTB), a classification of anti-noise screens can be established. In addition to being able to measure the intrinsicperformance of materials in a reverberant room(NF S 31.003 - EN 20.354) it is also possible to measurethe efficiency of anti-noise wall on site (NF S 31.089).

Equivalent Absorption Area A (m2) The equivalent absorption area is the equivalent surface area of theunitary absorption factor which absorbs acoustic energy at the same rate.It is calculated by the following formula:

A = αw x SWhere αwis the unique evaluation index of absorption of the cladding and Sits surface area (m2).αw, unique evaluation index of absorption

This is a unique value corresponding to the absorption powers of the cladding.This value is deducted from absorption factors by octave bands, themselvesobtained through measurements in thirds of an octave, conforming to the ISO354 norm.αw is equal to the value of 500 Hz in a reference curve defined by theEuropean norm EN ISO 11654 (Evaluation of acoustic absorption of materialsused for building).

Octave bandThe octave band characterises the width of the frequency band where thehighest frequency is double of the lowest.In construction octave bands centered on 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000 and4000 Hz are used.

Aerial NoisesThese begin in the air and propagate in the air: voice, loud speakers,ventilation…

Noises of ImpactImpact on an object (foot steps, moving furniture, dropped objects… )provokes vibration and emission of noise. The energy from the impact radiates through the object and thesurrounding air.

Pink NoiseThis is a standardized noise which is constant in each octave band. It isused in defining regulations to stimulate aerial noises in buildings as wellas noise from aircraft.

The NF S 30-101 norm defines it as: noise of which the spectral density isinversely proportional to the frequency.

Traffic NoiseThis is a normalised noise, used for simulating road and rail traffic noise. Itis richer in lower frequencies than pink noise. Its definition is given in thenorm NFS 31-057. The energy contained in each octave band is fixed inrelation to the energy contained in the octave band centered on 1000 Hz.The variations in energy according to the frequencies are as follows:

Decibel or dBThe decibel is a unit without dimension allowing the expression of therelationship between the values of two powers or pressures or twointensities:> Power expressed in decibels:

Lw = 10 log W/W0, W0 being the reference of acoustic power (W0 = 10-12

watt).> Pressure expressed in decibels:

Lp = 10 log p2/p02, p0 being the reference of acoustic pressure,

corresponding to the minimum pressure perceptible by the ear withoutany background noise at the frequency of 1000 Hz (p0 = 2.10-5 Pa).

Weighted decibel A or dB (A)This is a unit expressing the global level of sound (i.e all frequencies included), while taking into account the variations of the sensitivity of the human ear in relation to the frequency.The weakest intensity perceptible by individuals is in fact different for lower frequencies compared to medium or high frequencies.Reverberation time T (also known as duration of reverberation) in room, in secondsThe sound energy emitted by a sound source in a room is partly reflected by the walls of the room and gives rise to a reverberant sound. The duration of a reverberation corresponds to the time taken for the sound’s intensity to reduce by 60 decibels, once the source of the emission of sound has stopped. This reverberation time depends on the size of the room and the absorption of the walls. In the calculation and measurement of normalised soundinsulation, the reverberation time of the room is taken in account. The measurement of the reverberation time is made under the same conditions of frequencies and placing as for acoustic pressure. For housing, the reference forreverberation time is 0.5 seconds for all frequencies. (see sound insulation).

FrequencyIts definition is given by the norm NF S 30-301: Number of cycles per unit of time. It is expressed in hertz. A sound appears much sharper with a high frequency and much deeper with a low frequency.

Uncertainty IAcoustic regulations have an uncertainty factor I to be taken into account when measuring the acoustic quality of housing norm NF S 31-057. This is set at 3 decibels (A) at present.

Sound insulationSound insulation concerns the propagation of sounds between the exterior and a room or between two rooms. This is not to be confused with acoustic correction which concerns the propagation of the sounds within the same room.

Standardized acoustic insulation DnT,A in dB (A) weighted on the emission of an aerial noise between two spacesThe insulation between two spaces expressed in dB allows acoustic insulation to aerial noise from a pink noise emission to be given as one value.

Standardized acoustic insulation DnT,A,tR expressed in dB (A), weighted against noise from exterior spaces,The standardized insulation of a room against noises from exterior spaces, expressed in dB allows acoustic insulation toaerial noise from a traffic noise emission to be given as one value.Din the same way, standardized acoustic insulation between two rooms DnAT is deducted from the DnT value obtainedthrough frequency bands.To verify the acoustic quality of accommodation, LpE and LpR are measured according to the norm NF S 31-057.

Source roomAcoustic regulations fix the minimum levels of acoustic insulation between rooms. Here, the source room correspondsto the room where the sound source is placed during the acoustic verification of accommodation.

Receiving roomAcoustic regulations fix the minimum levels of acoustic insulation between rooms. Here, the receiving room where the sound is received during the acoustic verification of accommodation, the sound source being in the “source room”.

Standardized level of Acoustic Pressure, LnATTo quantify the level of noise received in a room (noises of equipment, impact…). In acoustic regulations LnAT

takes the weighting A into consideration and the reverberation time in the received room.

Standardized impact machineTo verify the insulation from impact noises, a machine corresponding to the norm NF S 31-052. The specificationsdepend on the characteristics and operating methods of the machine.

D E S C R I P T I O N

Wall cladding for acoustic correction for roads orinterior rooms. The tiles have two longitudinal lipson the reverse side for suspension on the rail.

P R O P E R T I E S

Phoniceram® and Phoniceram® dB terracottapanels and hanging rails are in conformity withthe Scientific and Technical Centre for Building(CSTB) Technical Approval n°. 2/02-971 forinstallation on secondary frame. The productsalso conform to NF P 13.304 and EN ISO 539.2Method C (frost resistance) standards. The installation system allows easy replacementof tiles in the event of breakage.Fixing Phoniceram® and Phoniceram® dB is madewith an aluminium Terreal rail upon which thetiles are hung.

• Phoniceram® The terracotta perforated panels are suspended on aluminium rails which are attached to anintermediary framework that has a space filled with mineral wool that acts as a sound trap. Used internally, the system performs both thermaland acoustical functions.

• Phoniceram® dB The terracotta panels are supplied with a blackPVC screen and mineral fibrous insulationattached, and this systemis hung on the aluminium rails.

• Anti-noise wall: Phoniceram® and Phoniceram® dB enable anti-noise walls or noisy areas to be brought into conformity with the current regulations.

• Acoustic for rooms: (according to the New Acoustic Regulationdecrees applicable since January 1996, see“Acoustic Regulation” p.122 and 123).With Phoniceram® this system allows theconstruction of an acoustic complex R = 2,15 m2°C/W (Rockwool 381/652 thickness80 mm or Protisol by Eurocoustic)

I N S T A L L A T I O N

The installation must conform to the CSTBworksheet n°. 3316, dated February 2001 and the modification n°. 3422 (wooden frame),and n°. 3194 dated February 2000 (metallicframe).Horizontally positioned from the bottom to the top with a theoretical gauge of 30.5 cm(advised installation gauge indicated on thepallet), the rails are fixed to the frame-workrespecting a space of 1 to 2 cm between theends of the rails in the same row.The supporting upright of the rail and the tilescan be made in wood or metal, fixed to the wallby Isolco type staple (Etanco Ltd or similar).The staples support mounting of rail and must beplaced in a staggered pattern which is partedaccording to the wall’s resistance. The uprightsmust be fixed with a maximum space of 120 cmat the interior and 90 cm at the exterior.

• For Phoniceram®: When the framework is installed (vertical andhorizontal adjustments thanks to brackets), thespaces are filled with an acoustic insulation,reference Rockwool 381-652 (thickness: 80 cm,density: 147 kg/m3) or Protisol by Eurocoustic.This insulator can be covered with a blackPVC screen (density: 70 gr/ m2). The thickness of the insulator must be equal to the thickness of the space to be filled so that the rail abuts the face of the insulation.The rail is fixed onto the frame with a woodscrew (for wooden frames) or a self-tappingscrew (for metal frames) with a theoreticalinteraxial distance of 305 mm (averagetheoretical gauge indicated on the pallet). (see diagrams 4,5 and 6)• For Phoniceram® dB:The rail is directly fixed to the wall with aninteraxial distance of 305 mm (averagetheoretical gauge indicated on the pallet). (see diagram 7).• In both cases:The tiles are then embedded and secured intoplace with a Sikaflex Pro 11 FC type sealantbetween the lower lips of the tiles and the upperwing of the rail. (see diagrams 5 and 7).

MAINTENANCE OF THE WORK

In spite of the high intrinsic resistance of thepanels of acoustic façades, in the event of anaccident , the pieces of a broken tile will not fall down; the upper part remain suspended, the lower part stuck to the rail.Even thought it is easy to replace independenttiles, it is impossible to remove an entire piece.• Technique of replacing a broken tile Having taken off the broken part, it is necessary to reduce the lower lip of the replacement tile to a thickness of about 4 mm, this way it is readyto be installed: it is then necessary to apply strip of mastic between the lower lip of the replacementtile and the upper wing of the rail.

Phoniceram® and Phoniceram® dB are cut easilywith a water cooled diamond disk circular saw.For vertical cuts (relative to positioning) the tilecan be cut down to 12 cm minimum. For horizontal cuts, the part that is cut must keep the upper lip which is necessary for fixationofthe product. Bracing is then made by the lowerpart of the tile wedged against the rail; thisbracing is finished with a linear mortar sealant,Sikaflex Pro 11 FC. It is preferable to ensure that the cut tiles are inlower part of the structure. In addition, we adviseto combine Phoniceram® and Zephir ® to limitthe cuts of acoustic products.

D E S C R I P T I O N

Terracotta tile with absorbent acoustic filling,mechanically fixed to a wall or a frame by meansof an aluminium 4/6 rail (see diagrams 2 and 3).

P R O P E R T I E S

Perforated terracotta tile Phonbric® meets P 08.301 and 08.302 standardswith a Q3 performance. • Phonbric® also answers to NF P 13.304 and

EN ISO 539.2 Method C (frost) standards.• Phonbric® was subjected to tests for resistance

to stains, chemical agents and anti-graffititests.Moreover Phonbric® was also subjected to thefollowing specific tests:

> Mechanical resistance of the hanging lips.> Resistance to depression due to normal wind

superior to 1500 Pascals in admissible value.> Maintenance: easy replacement of the tiles in

the event of breakages.> EN 20.354 standards: “Characteristics and

measurement of the ALPHA SABINE absorptioncoefficient determined in reverberating room”.(see graph. 1).

> “NF S 31.089”: Measurement in situ of Alpha Lcoefficient at 0° and 30°. Impulsive method.

Mechanical Fixing Rails (see diagram 2)The 4/6 rails meet the specifications establishedwith our supplier, enabling us to guarantee thereliability of these products.The 4/6 rails were subjected to the followingspecific tests conducted in our laboratories:> Resistance to deformation due to vertical and

frontal loads.> Control and reception of the product (reports

of analysis).H = height - L = length - th = thicknessTime required: 40 min/m2 (for the main body of the work)(*) These quantities were determined for horizontal joints of 10 mm and vertical joints of 6 mm.The units indicate the surface area including joints.

The Phonbric® is a double-skin cladding product, fixed on horizontal rails. It isused for the acoustic correction of noisy areas.It may be combined with Boreal® (cladding product)It is available in six colours.

Absorbent acoustic covering product designed forthe construction of extend anti-noise screens andacoustic correction in interior environments(theatres, classrooms, swimming pools, etc.). (see Acoustic Regulation pages 122 and 123).Phonbric® is characterized by its excellent soundabsorption between 250 and 4000 Hz.This makes it extremely useful in a large numberof applications. (see graph. 1).Phonbric® and Boreal® use the same type offixing systems (identical metal 4/6 rail).This enables them to be combined harmoniously.This allows a reinforcement of the shockresistance in case of constructions in exposedareas.In renovation, Phonbric® enables antinoise wallsor noisy areas to be brought into conformity withthe current regulations.

I N S T A L L A T I O N

The installation methods must conform to Terrealspecifications.In new construction as in renovation, thePhonbric® system is fixed directly to a wall(concrete or masonry), or on a secondary framepermitting the adjustment of the verticality(application on wall form wall or retaining walls (see diagram 3).Phonbric® is secured with 2 points of Sikaflex Pro11 FC type mastic (contact applied between theupper portion of the 4/6 rail and the lower lip ofthe tile); this gives an anti-vibration effectagainst the effects of the wind, and maintains the lower parts of the tiles in case of an accident.In this way, the tiles cannot be removed byvandalism. However, the easiness of replacing broken tilesshould be noted: replacement of a tile anywhereon the façade without deterioration of thestructure. Phonbric® can be installed with aligned verticaljoints or staggered vertical joints.
