O Rädhä! Threatening clouds devour the sky. Blackish Tamäla trees cast the forest into a dark gloom. Kåñëa cannot be alone at night--He is naturally timid--so take Him home with You." Bewildered by intense joy as She turned toward the kalpa-våkña kuïja beside the forest path, Çré Rädhäjé honored Her friend's words. She reached the bank of Kälindé, and in a secret place initiated Her love play. Triumph to Rädhä-Mädhava's confidential pastime. May its sweetness come alive in the hearts of the devotees.

Äcärya Govardhana is peerless in handling the erotic element in poetry. Dhoyé, prince among poets, pleases the ear with his musical cadences. But Jayadeva alone has mastery over apt and meaningful expression.

O master of the entire universe! O Çré Hari! O Keçava! O wonderful dwarf Vämanadeva, You cheat King Bali on the pretext of begging for three paces of land. The population of the universe has become purified by the water that touched Your toenails (the Ganges). May You be victorious!

vyaktänurägam iva khelad-anaìga-kheda- svedämbu-püram anupürayatu priyaà vaù (a)

As He rests in Padma Çré Rädhä's embrace on the soft slope of Her breast, the saf-froned chest of Madhu's killer is stained with red marks of passion, outwardly displaying His deep love within. On His chest Her kuìkuma blends with a stream of perspiration from Their tumultuous loving. May that stream inundate all of you with pleasure.

When spring came, tender-limbed Rädhä wandered in the woods like a flowering creeper, seeking Kåñëa in His many haunts. The God of Love intensified Her ordeal, tormenting Her with fevered thoughts, while Her friend sang to heighten the mood.

lalita-lavaìga-latä-pariçélana-komala-malaya-samére madhukara-nikara-karambita-kokila-küjita-kuïja-kuöére (1)

O Rädhe! Alas! How enchanting springtime is when the Malayan breeze arrives and impetuously embraces the tender clove creepers. The kuïjas resound with the sweet kuhu of the cuckoos and the humming of bumble-bees.

Çré Kåñëa is blithely enjoying with some fortunate damsels, dancing in a festival of love. O friend, this springtime brings endless agony to the forlorn and lonely-hearted.

unmada-madana-manoratha-pathika-vadhü-jana-janita-viläpe ali-kula-saìkula-kusuma-samüha-niräkula-bakula-kaläpe (2)

O Priya Sakhi! When husbands are long absent, lonely wives, excited by käma, continuously lament in separation. But look! Malati blossoms crowd upon the branches, while swarms of bees throng the abundant bakula flowers.

måga-mada-saurabha-rabhasa-vaçaàvada-nava-dala-mäla-tamäle yuva-jana-hådaya-vidäraëa manasija-nakha-ruci-kiàçuka-jäle (3)

In great delight new leaves of tamäla trees give off a fragrance of musk. Sakhé, look! The flame-like petals of the kiàçuka flowers, exactly resembling the finger-nails of Kämadeva, tear at young hearts.

madana-mahépati-kanaka-daëòa-ruci-keçara-kusuma-vikäçe milita-çili-mukha-päöala-paöala-kåta-smara-tüëa-viläse (4)

The saffron pistils of the näga-keçara flowers appear like the golden scepters of the King of Love and the trumpet (päöali) flowers surrounded by bumble-bees appear to be Kämadeva's quiver.

vigalita-lajjita-jagad-avalokana-taruëa-karuëa-kåta-häse virahi-nikåntana-kunta-mukhäkåti-ketaka-danturitäçe (5)

Sakhi! The trees bursting into bloom, compassionately laugh at a world becoming shameless under the influence of spring. The spiked ketakis, brightly blossoming in all directions, pierce the hearts of forlorn lovers.

mädhavika-parimala-lalite nava-mälati-jäti-sugandhau muni-manasäm api mohana-käréëi taruëa taruëä-karaëa-bandhau (6)

The pollen of the charming mädhavikä blossoms mixes with the exquisite aroma of nava-mälikä flowers (jühé), agitating the minds of even great sages. This springtime is the natural friend of the young.

sphurad-atimukta-latä-parirambhana-mukulita-pulakita-cüte våndävana-vépine parésara-parigata-yamunä-jala-püte (7)

Hey Sakhé! Trembling with rapture from the embrace of the restless Mädhavé vines, the mango trees burst with new buds. Yamunä's pure waters flow nearby where Çré Hari rejoices with lovely damsels in the groves of Våndävana.

Çré Jayadeva sings of the beauty of the Springtime forest, undergoing ecstatic trans-formations of love. May his auspicious song awaken remembrance of the lotus feet of Çré Hari in the devotees' hearts.

Hey Sakhé! Look! The spring breeze, laden with the fragrance of Ketaké flowers and spreading throughout the forest a white veil of pollen from the half opened Mallikä blossoms, is Kämadeva's ally, torturing every heart it touches.

The sweet kuhu-kuhu of cuckoos sporting in the tender mango sprouts combines with the drone of the greedy bees obsessed with the fragrant honey in the blossom-ing flowers. This clamor raises fever in the ears of lonely wayfarers pining in separa-tion, and spending their days contemplating those delightful days of dalliance erstwhile they had with beloveds dear as their lives.

Drawing Rädhä's attention to Muräri nearby delighting in the enthusiastic embraces of the lovable cowherd damsels, Her sakhé spoke again.

candana-carcita-néla-kalevara-péta-vasana-vana-mälé keli-calan-maëi-kuëòala-maëòita-gaëòa-yuga-smita-çälé (1)

His golden garment and wreath of wild flowers stand out against dark limbs besmeared with sandalwood paste. Jeweled earrings dangling in play make His cheeks glitter, setting off the bewitching smile on His face.

harir iha mugdha-vadhü-nikare viläsini viläsati kelé-pare (refrain)

Hey Viläsini Çré Rädhe! Look! Çré Hari joyously revels with a crowd of love-maddened maidens, being overwhelmed by their allurements.

péna-payodhara-bhära-bhareëa harià parirabhya sarägam gopa-vadhür anugäyati käcid udaïcita-parama-rägam (2)

One gopé, passionately embracing Çré Hari and crushing Him with the weight of her heavy breasts, sings with Him in the fifth note.

käpi viläsa-vilola-vilocana-khelana-janita-manojam dhyäyati mugdha-vadhür adhikaà madhusüdana-vadana-sarojam (3)

Another amorous cowherd maiden, lured by Madhusüdana's wanton, crooked glances, drinks in with her eyes the honey of His lotus face. Then she lapses into intent meditation on His beauty.

One full-hipped beauty bends forward to whisper a secret in the ear of Her beloved Çré Kåñëa, causing His hairs to bristle. Seeing His rapture, that rasikä maiden seizes this opportunity to kiss His cheek.

Another maiden, eager for the art of His love on the bank of Yamunä, catches hold of Çré Kåñëa's yellow cloth with both hands and drags Him into a charming vaïjula kuïja.

kara-tala-täla-tarala-valayävali-kalita-kalasvana-vaàçe räsa-rase saha-nåtya-parä hariëa-yuvaté-praçaçaàse (6)

Çré Hari praises one youthful beauty, drunk from dancing in the rite of love, her clapping hands and tinkling bangles echoing His flute's sweet notes.

çliñyati käm api cumbati käm api käm api ramayati rämäm paçyati sa-smita-cäru-taräm aparäm anugacchati vämäm (7)

One He embraces, another He kisses, yet another He passionately caresses. Another captures His expectant gaze with her suggestive smiles, and still another leaves in a huff, inducing Him to run after her.

Çré Jayadeva describes Çré Rädhä's lament as She witnesses Çré Keçava's astonishing and mysterious amorous games in the bowers of Våndävana. May this wonderful, delightful song, celebrating these fantastic forest pastimes, bestow auspiciousness upon all.

Çré Hari's black sinuous limbs, soft as a blue lotus, begin the Festival of Love. Hey Sakhi! In spring He plays like erotic mood incarnate, enchanting beautiful cow-herd girls into a wild, blissful state as they embrace His every limb without restraint.

nijotsaìga-vasad-bhujaìga-kavala-kleçäd iveçäcalaà präleya-plavanecchayänusarati çré-khaëòa-çailänilaù

Malayan breezes blow northward toward Himalayan peaks, longing to plunge in the snows after weeks of suffering from the warm respiration of the venemous

Before all the other enthralling gopés overwhelmed with prema in the räsa-lélä, She held Him in close embrace being blinded by passion. Under the pretence of commending His music, She kissed Him deep, exclaiming, "Sweet indeed is Your face, sweet as nectar."

Chapter 2 akleça-keçavaù - Carefree Keçava

Hari roamed in the forest dallying with all the cowherdesses. Feeling neglected and driven away by envy, Rädhä retreated to a distant vine-covered bower where sounds of buzzing bees only kindled Her passion. Despondent, She poured out Her agony to Her friend in secret.

His hair is adorned with an extremely charming array of peacock feathers fash-ioned in a beautiful half-moon design. His luster resembles a mass of refreshing rainclouds colorfully shot through by an unending succession of brilliant rain-bows. These very vivid images of Çré Kåñëa constantly possess Me.

In the festival of Anaìga He leans forward with the desire to kiss the lotus faces of the young cowherd girls. His tender lips are of an enchanting soft reddish colour like the bud of a Banduka flower, and the unprecedented luster of His mild smile spreads across His handsome face. The vision of this very Çré Kåñëa con-stantly appears within My mind.

The hairs on Çré Kåñëa's entire body rise up in joy when, with His arms as delicate as new blossoms, He tightly embraces thousands upon thousands of youthful gopés. The rays of light emitting from the jeweled ornaments on His hands, feet and chest illuminate all directions. I cannot help remembering Him.

That cruel-hearted Çré Kåñëa, of broad chest that seems impenetrable as a door, is ever fond of inflicting pain upon the tips of the excellent breasts of the young brides. These very images of Çré Kåñëa constantly appear in My mind.

Pétämbara-dhäré Çré Kåñëa (attired in yellow) diffuses His sweetness and saturates the best of His followers - including demigods, demons, sages, humans and others - with prema-rasa. Memories of that Çré Kåñëa forcefully come to Me.

With eyes restless due to the powerful influence of anaìga-rasa (the mellow of amorous love) and full of longing, He revels sensually with Me in My heart of hearts. I become more and more restless remembering this Çré Kåñëa.

Hey Sakhé! Once I stealthily set out to keep Our appointed rendezvous. Arriving early, He concealed Himself just to observe My eagerness for Him. Seeing My intense anxiety in not finding Him, He suddenly delighted Àe with the nectar of His laughter, full of çåìgära-rasa.

Seeing Me so naive and gullible due to the natural embarrassment of one's first amorous encounter, He employed a succession of courteous words and humble entreaties to dispel My shyness. Enchanted by His flattering words, I conversed with Him while smiling softly and sweetly. Just then that cunning Çré Kåñëa sud-denly snatched the cloth from around My hips.

With great pleasure He had Me lie down on a soft bed of tender blossoms and feeling highly elated He reclined upon My heart. I tightly embraced Him and kissed Him; and He, being under the powerful influence of anaìga-rasa, returned the embrace and repeatedly drank the nectar of My lips.

Seeing My attractive body covered with drops of perspiration from the labor of Our amorous play, He became even more restless with desire for anaìga-rasa.

He was surrounded by a throng of lovely Vraja maid-ens, but as soon as He saw Me, He became bewildered and sent them away with a glance. His flute slipped from His hand in embarrassment, His cheeks became wet with the perspiration of love, and His face blossomed with the nectar of a bashful smile. I rejoice to see Him like this.

duräloka-stoka-stavaka-navakaçoka-latikä-vikäsaù käsäropavana-pavano'pi vyathayati

Wind from a lakeside garden - coaxing buds on new açoka branches into clusters of scarlet flowers - is only fanning the flames to burn Me. This mountain of new mango blossoms humming with roving bumblebees is no comfort to Me now, My friend.

His heart bound to the chain of Rädhä’s love, Kaàsäri, the enemy of Kaàsä, firmly clasped Her to His chest and, taking Her away from the räsa-lélä, which is the complete essence of all His desires, abandoned the other vraja-sundarés.

When Rädhä saw Me surrounded by a multitude of shapely Vraja gopés, She became indignant and went away. Fearing that I had committed an offense, I did not even have the courage to stop Her from leaving.

I can see the reddish lotus of Çré Rädhä's face surrounded by hovering çyäma-coloured bumble-bees. Due to Her angry mood Her face, with Her eyebrows crooked like a creeper, has assumed the beauty of a red lotus.

Chapter 4 snigdha-madhusüdanaù - Tender Madhusüdana

yamunä-téra-vänéra-nikuïje mandaà ästhitaà präha-prema-bharodbhräntaà mädhavaà rädhikä-sakhé (a)

Sitting in the Vänéra bushes on the bank of Yamunä, Mädhava helplessly waited, reeling under the burden of ardent love. Rädhikä’s sakhé came and spoke to Him:

O Kåñëa! She slanders sandalbalm. She finds the moon rays tormenting. She rejects the Malayan breeze as the poison of the serpents who wind around the candana trees.

She raises Her sublime lotus face, clouded and streaked with tears, like the moon dripping with nectar from cuts of Rahu’s teeth.

She secretly draws You with deer musk to resemble the God of Love, riding on a Makara fish, aiming mango-blossom arrows - thus She reverentially worships You.

prati-padam idam api nigadati mädhava tava caraëe patitäham tvayi vimukhe mayi sapadi sudhä-nidhir api tanute tanu-däham (6)

She pleads again and again, “Hey Mädhava! I am falling at Your feet. When You turn away from Me, even the moon, with his chalice of nectar, showers fire upon My body.”

Intently meditating on You, She imagines that You have appeared before Her. Sometimes She laments in separation, and the next moment She joyfully laughs. Sometimes She cries, and sometimes She abandons all suffering meeting with You in a sphürti.

I have been imploring You from the core of my heart for a long time. To delay any longer is useless. The delightful time for abhisära has arrived.

Embarrassed to be caught in their mutual infidelity, they embrace, kiss and then scratch each other. As desire rises to dizzying heights, they lose composure and excitedly engage in love-play. Their unexpected, clandestine amour leaves them feeling an astonishing type of affec-tion. What delight, mixed with feelings of shame, is waiting for You in this dark-ness! Therefore, O Beautiful One, go! As quickly as possible, go to Your sylvan love chamber. How can You possibly neglect such a golden opportunity?

Looking repeatedly at Your decorations and ornaments, She fancies, "I am Madhuripu."

Çré Rädhä has exquisitely decorated Herself with many ornaments. When the leaves rustle, She is filled with expectation, thinking that You have come. She makes a soft bed for You and when You are late She feels acute pain. In this way She keeps busy with various activities such as decorating Herself, wondering about Your arrival, making the bed, babbling loving words and nurturing the conviction that You are coming. Still She will not survive the night without You.

When Çré Rädhä saw that Her sakhé was late, She sent another sakhé that evening disguised as a male traveler. Coming to Çré Kåñëa, the traveler delivered Çré Rädhä's message containing hints about their secret appointment. She said, "When I was a guest in Çré Rädhä's home, She said to me, 'Hey brother! Why are You lingering under this bhäëòéra tree? A çré kåñëa (black) serpent lives there. Get up and go a little further and You will see the delightful Nandälaya. Why don't You go there?'" Çré Kåñëa thanked the messenger sent by Çré Rädhä so that His

As Çré Kåñëa was absorbed in thoughts of Çré Rädhä, the moon lit the depths of Çré Våndävana Dhäma with his gentle rays. Appearing in the eastern direction, he was just like a drop of candana on the lotus face of a beautiful newly-married girl. At the same time he bore a stain like the blemish worn by an adulterous woman.

While the moon rose and Mädhava idled, lonely Rädhä cried Her pain aloud sob-bing pitifully.

Hari is late for Our forest rendezvous. My bright youthful beauty goes to waste.

I have been cheated by My own sakhés. Who else will give Me shelter?

yad-anugamanäya niçi gahanam api çilitam tena mama hådayam idam asama-çara-kélitam (2)

As the qualities of a young woman who is expert in all arts and whose body is soft and radiant, always shine within the heart of a young man, similarly may this delightful song of Çré Jayadeva, who is unconditionally surrendered at the lotus feet of Çré Kåñëa, always grace the hearts of the devotees.

Have His gopa friends detained Him with their joyful pranks? Has He lost His way in the dark forest? Or has My lover's anxious heart exhausted Him so much that He cannot make His way here?

athägatä mädhavam antareëasakhém iyaà vékñya viñäda-mükäm

viçaìkamänä ramitaà kayäpi janärdanaà dåñöavad etad äha (b)

Çré Rädhä saw Her sakhé return without Mädhava and Her heart sank. Silently grieving, She suspected Janärdana's fresh dalliance with another enticing damsel, and spoke to Her friend as if having witnessed His infidelity.

Sakhé! She is richly arrayed in ornaments for the battle of love. When she is absorbed in anaìga-rasa, her braid opens and the flowers falling from her dishevelled hair are crushed.

Her cheeks are even lovelier when her earrings are swinging. The tiny bells on the jewelled sash elegantly adorning her waist tinkle sweetly as they shake about on her hips.

The glances of her beloved Çré Kåñëa incite her bashful laughter. Tasting the ambrosia of love, she coos in rapture.

Thrilled with anaìga-rasa, her hairs rise up and her body shivers in waves of pleasure. She closes her eyes and lets out a long sigh, revealing her deep absorp-tion in amorous joy.

This inviting beauty, expert in rati-rasa, looks even more attractive covered in droplets of perspiration from her love-play. She is an expert soldier exhibiting great fortitude in amorous combat. Her arms, more delicate than lotus stems, are beautified by the tender lotus petals of her hands, cool like snow. Over these petal-like hands He slips bangles stud-ded with sapphires looking like swarms of bumblebees.

The hips of that enthralling beauty are as broad, fragrant and inviting as the golden throne of Kämadeva. He is decorating her hips - the shrine of Eros - with a gem-studded sash, as if embellishing the arched doorway to that shrine with an auspicious festoon.

Seeing their mirth Çré Kåñëa fell shy and with a mild smile, fired a mischievous sidelong glance at Çré Rädhä's lotus face. May that Nanda-nandana Çré Kåñëa give joy to all the worlds.

Chapter 8 vilakñya-lakñmépatiù - Abashed Kåñëa (The Hapless Lord of Fortune)

We offer prayers to Çré Govinda's lotus feet, which annihilate all adversity. Those lotus feet were radiant like blue lotuses reflecting the sapphire-encrusted crowns of the overjoyed Devatäs who bowed down reverentially to Him upon the defeat of King Bali. Those lotus feet are the source of the enchanting Mandäkiné (Ganges) which spontaneously issued forth like a flow of honey.

Chapter 10 catura-catur-bhujaù -- Clever Kåñëa --The Four-armed Flatterer

aträntare'masåëa-roña-vaçäm apära-niùçväsa-niùsaha-mukhéà sumukhém upetya

savréòam ékñita-sakhé-vadanäà dinänte sänanda-gadgada-padaà harir ity uvaca (a)

As night came, Çré Hari approached Çré Rädhä, finding the force of Her anger softened, and Her face weak from endless sighing. She looked bashfully at the face of Her sakhé as Hari, blooming with joy, stammered His blissful words.

Blessed indeed are they who drink the sweetness of the doe-eyed Rädhä's face rapturous in the aftermath of lovemaking - eyes only slightly open, lips bathed by the rays of Her teeth as She emitted indistinct sweet murmerings combined with continuous sighs, Her body lost in lassitude, Her breasts slightly trembling in Kåñëa's deep embrace.

As He idled after passionate love, Rädhä, secure in Her power over Him, spoke to Govinda, wanting Him to decorate Her.

My love, once again besmear My eyes with collyrium eclipsing the beauty of a swarm of bumblebees. Your lips kissed away the lampblack bow that shoots the shafts of Love.

O honorable one, My hair fell loose in Our amorous play. Please weave flowers into My exquisite tresses, which are like Kämadeva's cämara flag and which are more captivating than peacock plumes.

sarasa-ghane jaghane mama çambara-däraëa-väraëa-kandare maëi-raçanä-vasanäbharaëäni çubhäçaya väsaya sundare (7)

O abode of auspiciousness, My loins are the cave of the madly passionate ele-phant Kämadeva, who killed the demon Çambara. Cover them wth a jeweled belt, cloths and ornaments.

çré-jayadeva-vacasi rucire sadayaà hådayaà kuru maëòane hari-caraëa-smaraëämåta-nirmita-kali-kaluña-jvara-khaëòane (8)

Adorn yourself with Çré Jayadeva's words, which bestow auspiciousness and kidnap the heart; thus your spirit will become tender. The nectar of remembrance of Çré Hari's lotus feet is the elixir against the fevers of this dark age.

“Paint leaves on My breast and pictures on My cheeks. Place this jeweled sash on My hips. Adorn My braid with flowers. Bedeck My wrists with rows of bangles and put ankle-bells on My feet.” Ordered by Rädhä thus, Pétämbara obediently complied with pleasure.

yad gändharva-kaläsu kauçalam anudhyänaà ca yad vaiñëavaà yac chåìgära-viveka-tattva-racanä-kävyeñu léläyitam

O powerful wine! Do not think you are so intoxicating. O sugar! You are too harsh. O grapes! Who will look at you now? O nectar (amåta)! You are like death (måta). O milk! You taste like water. O ripe mango! Now go and weep (in grief). O ruddy lips of a ladylove! Now you can go to hell. All of you no longer have any value as long as Çré Jayadeva's eloquent, essential description of amorous love is manifest in this world.

In this way, Kåñëa enjoyed many love-games with Rädhä on the banks of Yamunä. He mistook the row of hairs above Her navel meeting with Her pearl necklace to be the Prayäga confluence. And Her delightful breasts, the fruits offered by that Prayäga, are the cherished goal of that best of males. May the affairs of His two lotus hands bestow the wealth of happiness upon the reciters and the audience of this poem.

He whose bed is Çeña-räja, the chief of all serpents; whose splendour expands unlimitedly reflecting in the jewels upon Çeña-räja's innumerable hoods; who has assumed thousands of eyes to gaze upon Kamalä as She massages His lotus feet; who is abounding simultaneously in many forms - may that Çré Hari protect you all.

"O beautiful one! When the Lord of Pärvaté (Çiva) could not attain You on the shore of the ocean of milk, bewildered by Your beauty, he swallowed the deadly kälaküöa poison. Then You selected Me as Your consort." Remembering this pre-vious conversation, Kåñëa repeatedly filled His eyes with the sight of the treasured mahäpadma jewels of Çré Rädhä's breasts. May that Çré Hari protect you all.
