Pilot-Scale Gasification Campus

Offices & Labs

GTI Overview

> Not-for-profit research, with 70 year history

> Facilities ─ 18 acre campus near

Chicago─ 200,000 ft2,

28 specialized labs ─ Offices in AL, CA, MA, PA

TX, Wash DC> Staff of 250> Market opportunities

are creating substantial growth

> 1,200 patents; 500 products

Asset Lifecycle Tracking Program> Part of GTI’s Intelligent Utility initiative

> Transition away from paper based data collection towards mobile, electronic data collection

> Reduce the cost of compliance─ Hardware and software─ Data management labor

> Decrease operational risk─ Increased data quality─ Enhanced awareness

Page 5: GTI’s Asset Lifecycle Tracking Program - Northeast Gas

55

Objectives

>Create an architecture that provides . . . ─ Low cost data collection devices

─ Simple software

─ Access to up-to-date engineering information

─ Real-time data submittal from the field

─ Minimal back-office processing

Page 6: GTI’s Asset Lifecycle Tracking Program - Northeast Gas

66

GIS

> View GIS data in the field

> Update GIS features in the field

> Attach survey, inspection and repair data directly to assets in GIS

> Create new GIS features in the field

> Uses Esri ArcServer (compatible with Smallworld)

77

Status

>Software architecture developed>Operator specific applications being built>Pilot and implementation projects on-going

Page 8: GTI’s Asset Lifecycle Tracking Program - Northeast Gas

88

Current Applications

> Exposed pipe surveys

> Marker ball installations (RFID tags)

> HCA field data capture

> CP readings

> One-call tickets (electronic whitelining)

> Excavation encroachment monitoring

> Asset Lifecycle Tracking

Asset Tracking

>Implementation of ASTM F2897>Standardized classification

system has been developed to encode certain characteristics of various gas distribution products─ Final result is a 16-digit

alphanumeric code─ The overall format and syntax is

summarized within recently approved ASTM specification (F2897-11)

Page 10: GTI’s Asset Lifecycle Tracking Program - Northeast Gas

10

Asset Tracking

>Format for 16-digit code

>To prevent duplication in 2-digit component manufacturer code, a web based registry has been developed

Page 11: GTI’s Asset Lifecycle Tracking Program - Northeast Gas

11

Asset Tracking

>Several manufacturers are already started to label pipe and fittings with 16 digit bar code, including:

>Polypipe

>RW Lyall

>others

12

Asset Tracking – next steps

>Initiated projects to develop standardized classification systems for:

>Meters and Regulators

>Transmission Systems

Asset Lifecycle Tracking

>GTI’s technology solution to implement ASTM F2897-11a─ Barcode scanner─ High accuracy GPS receiver─ Tablet device with GIS-based data

collection software─ Application to convert barcode into

asset attributes to auto populate the GIS

Page 14: GTI’s Asset Lifecycle Tracking Program - Northeast Gas

1414

Asset Lifecycle Tracking

>Automates the entire data collection process for documenting new installations

>In less than one minute . . . ─ The barcode scanner captures asset attribute information and

causes a new feature to be created in the GIS─ GIS fields are automatically populated with asset attribute

information (material type, batch number, etc)─ The location of the new asset is positioned with the sub-foot

accurate GPS in real time─ Data is available in the back office immediately

High Accuracy GPS

>GTI partnered with NavComto provide high accuracy GPS for smart phones and tablets─ Sub-foot quality data in real

time ─ No need for post processing or

a base station─ Field data directly inserted into

the GIS (with controls)

Next Steps –Standardized Fusion Data Capture

>Standardizing the output / capture of fusion parameter data (butt fusions, saddle fusions, and electrofusions).

>Industry standard for the content, format and encoding mechanism of fusion records

>Also, initiating OQ “smart cards” to document who is making the fusions and status of training.
