My thanks for this week’s cover picture go to a most consideratereader who, intuitively we hope, must have realized I was running

short of an appropriate picture. And world weather conditions being

the subject of our days what better example of the subject in question

that gets the top leaders gathering every so often to decide what must

be done whilst we here continue chopping up all our beloved forests!

     Still time to confirm:

     Not so honest…

There is not an hour that goes by in which I don’t hear of some

Paraguayan diddling a fellow countryman or for that matter even aforeigner. Be it straight forward swindling: like forging property ti-

tles, displaying bought under-the-table diplomas, denouncing sup-

posed misbehaviour of fellow clergymen or even turning to black-

mail, adding all types of honours to their name, heck, and name it

and it would seem that the whole country wallows up to their shame-

less gills in a mud hole.

Now, that is as it may be, there happens to be another side to the

coin. The fact that one must also bear in mind is that foreigners, who

supposedly came to enjoy our way of life, like working in a tax free

haven, with plenty of accessible women at one’s beck and call whilst

for others it is the opportunity of gorging themselves with our won-

derful meat, brings to light thebad news that, although their misdoings

can’t be counted per hours of the day (there are far less foreigners

than natives for this to happen), but certainly per days it turns out is

    quite the rule.

Back in the days when I started up the Guaraní News I happened to

be the only Publisher/Editor of a foreign (English) printed publica-

tion. This lasted for some years until there appeared a German publi-

cation closely followed by another and then yet another. The third

folded shortly after when the owner dipped his hand into the till and

took himself off to sunnier beaches.

The last I heard, through the lady who sold them in the Central PostOffice shop, both the first and second publication, having lasted for a

good number of years (well, till early this year), have both folded.

Now I get the bad news that one, the AKTUELLE RUNDSCHAU,

managed by a German who also managed a property company “Dr.

Warner”, allegedly not only failed to pay his personnel but also  al-

legedly   absconded after pocketing millions of Guaraníes.

The question that now remains is just how long must I now wait

before I too can find a suitcase full of greenbacks…with my days

numbered let me tell you it just isn’t worth the effort, I just do not

feel up to spitting into the mirror when I see my face!!!

     Short memories…

The 18th International Cinema of Art and Culture Film Festival was

held in our city. It culminated with a grand finale that included pre-

senting the “Panambí” Best Movie Award. This year the award was

chosen by the public. It turned out to be a splendid Film Festival

which was staged in our Senate on Monday, 19 October.

. It is not for the likes of this scribe to throw cold water on such a

public event, however it has not been that long since the tragic super-

market “Ycuá Bolaños” fire caused the death of several hundred fel-

low citizens. What riles me, and should once again be brought to

light only because there are strict laws governing such matters: Per-mitting public attendances to events should be limited so that the

public does not have to end up sitting in the passageways or access

areas. Picture below shows what I mean: taken a good fifteen min-

utes before the event started and with the presence of our Lawmakers

(who, of course, had privileged seats), so why care about the law.

I should mention that I was not the most popular pressman after

taking the picture:   “Y a este que mierda le importa donde nos

sentamos!” (Who the hell does this shit think he is as to where we

sit!”). Well, there happens to be several hundred dead all because

safety measures were not being complied with. One reason (and the

organizers have heard me tell it) for not attending the Festival when

they showed the pictures in the Villa Morra flicks was the fire haz-ards and lack of exits, and now the same had to occur in the one place

one would have thought that someone would have cared about other

     people’s lives…

Here is wishing one and all a most pleasant weekend

    The Humour Corner

     By Eduardo “Teddy” Abello

In Louisiana, this fella, Boudreaux, had a bad vehicle accident,

caused by a truck. In court, the trucking company’s fancy lawyer was

    questioning Boudreaux.

Didn’t you say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine’?, the lawyer asked.

Boudreaux responded, ‘Let me told you what happened. Me, I had

jus loaded my favorite mule, Bessie, into da . . ‘

I didn’t ask for any details,’ the lawyer interrupted. ‘Just answer the

question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine!’?

Boudreaux said, ‘I had jus got Bessie into da trailer and I was driving

    down da road . . .’

The lawyer interrupted again and said, ‘Judge, I am trying to

establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told theHighway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now several

weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is

a fraud. Please tell him to answer the question.’

By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Boudreaux’s answer

and said to the lawyer, ‘I’d like to hear what he has to say about his

    favorite mule, Bessie.’

Boudreaux thanked the Judge and proceeded, ‘I had just loaded

Bessie, my favourite mule, into da trailer and was driving her down

da highway when dis huge semi-truck and trailer ran da stop sign and

smacked my truck right in da side. Me, I was thrown into one ditch

and Bessie was thrown into da udder. I was hurting, real bad and

didn’t want to move at tall. But, I could herd ole Bessie moanin and

groanin. Me, I knew she was in some kind o’ terrible shape just by

    her groans.

Shortly after da accident, a Highway Patrolman, he came on da

scene. He herd Bessie moanin’ and groanin’ so, him, he went over ta

her. After he took hisself a look at her, he took out his gun and shot

her between da eyes. Den da Patrolman came cross da road, gun in

hand, and looked at me, and said ‘How are you feeling?’’

’Now what da hell would you say?!’

One missing…A well-respected surgeon was relaxing on his sofa one evening just

after arriving home from work. As he was tuning into the evening

news, the phone rang. The doctor calmly answered it and heard the

familiar voice of a colleague on the other end of the line. We need a

fourth for cards” said the friend.

“I’ll be right over,” whispered the doctor.

As he was putting on his coat, his wife asked, “Is it serious?”

Oh yes, quite serious,” said the doctor gravely. “In fact, three doctors

    are there already!”
