A note before starting:

The semi-automatic AK series weapon used for this tutorial is a Romanian-made SAR-1 AKM. There are onlya couple of aftermarket accessories on this firearm, mainly its folding butt stock and pistol grip wooden forend.For basic disassembly, these features make no difference at all. Most rifles imported from Romania havea particular shepherds (or crook) hook to retain the fire control group (trigger system). This tutorial coversthe Romanian shepherds hook, but other versions will be added soon (I hope). All of that being said, none of

it affects basic disassembly for the AK-series weapon.

1. PERFORM BASIC DISASSEMBLY

2. LOCATE THE SHEPARD'S HOOK

The arrows point to this part. It is a small, stiff wire. Itfits into the little notch just below the head of thehammer and trigger pins. This ensures that the pins donot work themselves out during operation.

3. REMOVE THE SHEPARD'S HOOK

Using a small screwdriver or a pair of pliers, force thehook out of the notches in the pins by pushing it from thebase towards the front of the receiver. Direction is shownin the image to the right.

4. REMOVE THE SAFETY LEVER

First, rotate the lever to 90 degrees, as shown in theimage on the right. At this point, the safety lever cansimply be removed from the rifle. If the hammer iscocked, it will spring forward when you pull the safetylever out. This is normal.

5. REMOVE THE TRIGGER ASSEM BLY (FIRE

CONTROL GROUP)





Using a punch, gently tap out the pin, right-to-left, justabove the trigger as shown. Do not use enough pressureto warp your receiver.

Note: If you have a Tapco G2 trigger or another captivetrigger, the entire mechanism (disconnecter, spring, andtrigger) will come out at this time as one piece as





opposed to the image shown.

The hammer springs now have to be moved off of thetrigger bars. Correct configuration is shown on the right.





Use pliers or a screwdriver to move the spring as shownon the right.





At this point, the trigger will pop right out as shown.

Next, put the spring behind the hammer as shown. Thehammer can be removed without this step, but it is muchharder.

Using a punch, tap out the hammer pin right-to-left asshown.

6. REMOVE FURNITURE

If you plan on changing furniture, follow these steps,otherwise just skip to re-assembly. These steps can alsobe done without the removal of the fire control group if you just want to do a furniture change.






First remove your cleaning rod. This is most easilyaccomplished by applying pressure to the rod justforward of the lower handguard and simply pulling therod out.

Next, locate the lever on the handguard retainer asshown in the image on the right.






Using pliers or a screwdriver, rotate the lever 180degrees as shown in the image on the right.

Push the handguard retainer towards the barrel as shown.

The lower handguard may now be removed as shown inthe image on the right.

Using a flat head screwdriver, unscrew both screws asshown.





The buttstock can now be removed as shown.

Note: Many wood stocks are hard to remove, despiteboth screws being removed. This is due to the expansionof the wood. The best method I've found is to tap thestock on either side against carpet and pulling like crazy.





To remove the pistol grip, locate the screw at the base of the pistol grip and unscrew it.

The pistol grip can now be removed. Note that you havethree parts: the pistol grip itself, the nut, and the screw.

Also note that the nut is angled towards the rear of thereceiver.





7. BOLT DISASSEMBLY

First, locate the pin shown in the photo on the right.Using a punch, push the pin out from this drection.

The pin should come out as shown.





When this pin is removed, the firing pin should fall right

now.

Not: Some rifles, such as the Saiga, have spring-loadingfiring pins and a spring will come out with the firing pin.





Locate the second pin as shown. This pin holds in theextractor.

With the extractor pin removed, the extractor andextractor pin will pop out as shown.

Okay, detailed disassembly is now complete! Let's put it all back together now.

1, ASSEMBLE THE BOLT

The poorly drawn MSpaint image is on the is a picture of the completed bolt assembly. Notice how the firing pin

retention pin holds the firing pin in place.





Replace the extractor, spring, and extractor pin fist.

The easiest method is to push in the extractor and pin inplace with your thumb and then place the extractor pin inplace.

Make reference to the picture in the disassembly processfor the correct orientation of the pin. The smallest "step"faces the bottom of the pin to allowing the firing pin

retention pin to be inserted.

Place the firing pin into the bolt, closing following thepoor MSpaint rendition at the beginning of the assemblyportion of this page.

After the pin is in place, press the firing pin retention pin



back in place from the opposite direction



back in place from the opposite direction.

Now, function check the bolt--give it a little shake. If either the firing pin or the extractor pops out, repeat theabove steps from the beginning.





2. REPLACE FURNITURE

Slide the lower handguard back into the receiver of thegun as shown.

Slide the lower handguard retainer in place and clamp it



down as shown in the picture on the right

Seat the buttstock fully in place and replace the twoscrews as shown on the right.

Replace the pistol grip nut as shown. It should beinserted entirely into the hole at the bottom of thereceiver.





Place the pistol grip under the nut, align the pistol gripscrew, and screw it back in place.





3. PUT IN THE FIRE CONTROL GROUP

This part can be a bastard, so keep close attention. Thisis where having a Red Star Arms crook hook replacementand a G2 become very, very handy.

Hook the shepard's hook over the center support. Thediagram on the right shows the final placement from a



left-hand view of the recevier.



NOTE: There are several ways to use a shepard's hook,this is the easiest way that I have found.

Roll the hammer springs over the hammer like we didduring removal. Place the hammer back into the receiver.Insert the hammer pin below the sherpard's hook pin.Ensure the hammer pin is fully seated.





Next, place the trigger into the receiver. ---this is thetricky part--- insert the disconnecter spring into the notchon the trigger and place the disconnecter over it.

While pressing down on the disconnecter and spring,insert the trigger pin under the shepard's

hook as shown above. Ensure it is fully seated. Ensurethat the hammer spring is over both hooks as shown inthe photo on the right.

Use a pair of small pliers or the screwdriver to ensure thesherpard's hook is fully into the notch on the trigger andhammer pins.

Take a breath--the hardest part is over.

Insert the safety selector in at 90 degrees as shown. It

should pop right into place as shown on the right.



Once the selector lever is in place, rotate it clock-wise to



p ,engage it.
