Athens is a budding metropolis with all of its culture and vibrant college campus, but what I have come to love most is the sense of community. In this edition of guide2athens, we not only spotlight the best locally owned and operated businesses of Athens, but we decided to share some of the best non-profits too. The University of Georgia, the commerce, the philanthropy and the amazing people involved in those endeavors connect to make this such a special place to live and to visit.

So check out the section dividers and enjoy McGinnis Leathers’photography of many Athens’ landmarks. Note the non-profits listed and visit their websites to learn more. Get to know the “Classic City of the South” better!

My favorite part of producing our annual book is the neat interactions I get to have with so many cool business owners. The main message from them this time around was to encourage our readers the importance of shopping local. Inside you will find 100 local businesses and your patronage to them is vital in order for Athens to remain the gem that we all love so much. And when you go to one of the businesses, please tell them you are there because of our little black book.

Thanks to all our participants and everyone who had a part in our production with a special thank you to our photographers Blane Marable and McGinnis Leathers.

Farm 255 is a restaurant that seeks to reconnect food to its roots and people to their food. They serve local, seasonal and sustainable food sourced from their own Full Moon Farms, a cooperative of vegetable farms in and around the Athens area, and Moonshine Meats, a collective of cow and pig ranchers that evolved from their own livestock operations. They utilize a whole animal approach to meat cookery and supplement their own harvests with those of other local growers. Under the direction of Chef Whitney Otawka, the menu is based on seasonal shifts in the field. They serve lunch on their patio out of Farm Cart, their moveable feast, and are available for catered events in their space or yours. They are also a full bar and live music venue.

Hilltop Grille is the life-long dream of Athens resident Chris Lloyd. He and his business partner, Rick Pen-nell, opened “Hilltop” in November 2002. “I wanted to open a restaurant that Athens could call its’ own,” says Lloyd. “When you want to show people from out of town what Athens is all about, you don’t want to take them to the same franchise restaurant they have back home. When I went to UGA back in the 70s, everyone went to Poss’s out on the Atlanta Highway. I want to fill that void.”

Discover what the locals know, it’s the best steak and seafood in Athens and you don’t have to fight the downtown crowd. Reservations and large groups are welcome.

Stefano Volpi prepares food at La Dolce Vita much like his family did while growing up at the foothills of the Italian Alps. Hearty portions of the highest quality pasta made from scratch. The lightest gnocchi each rolled by hand. Fresh tomatoes straight from the garden and handpicked porcini mushrooms gathered from the nearby forests. The prosciutto and salami cut into the thinnest slices and the freshest house made mozzarella slathered with freshly pressed olive oil. Volpi’s kitchen shares the very best of his culinary heritage. Italians enjoy “the sweet life” of great food, and at La Dolce Vita, you can too.
