Page 3: Guide to Visual Arts For Norfolk and Suffolk

Welcome

Since ARTSeast began in 2013, we've been in awe at

the sheer amount of artistic talent in our beautiful

region. Each month we have explored some of the

most exciting and innovative art, artists, projects and

exhibitions in the area. Both Norfolk and Suffolk have

a rich artistic heritage and we have enjoyed

celebrating that in numerous features.

With each month, as news reaches us of the wealth

of upcoming events in the local art world, we've

realised the need for a Visual Arts Directory

dedicated to both counties. Something for art lovers

to keep close at hand or for artists themselves to use

as a handy promotional tool for their work.

This guide includes some of the best individual

artists, galleries, art tutors, art fairs, ceramic cafes

and craft centres in our region.

For the purposes of this guide, we have divided

Norfolk and Suffolk into rough approximations of

north, south, east and west with a section specifically

for Norwich and Ipswich.

if you're an artist or gallery owner and would like to

be included in next year's guide - or if you'd like

coverage in the monthly ARTSeast - please get in

touch on the numbers opposite.

We hope you enjoy this handy reference guide to all

things artistic in the region.

Norwich

At the heart of the beautiful county of Norfolk lies the

fine city of Norwich. With its winding mediaeval streets,

imposing Norman Castle and a wealth of museums

and art galleries, Norwich is a unique and vibrant

home for the arts.

History has shown that Norwich has always provided

inspiration to artists.

The Norwich School of Painters - founded in 1803 by

John Crome and Robert Ladbrooke - developed its own

school influenced by each others work and the vibrant

landscape of Norwich and its surrounding countryside.

These artists Included John Sell Cotman whose

famous work Norwich Market Place conveys the hustle

and bustle of that most famous of Norwich landmarks.

Their work also influenced generations of painters after

them including Alfred Munnings and Edward Seago.

This passion for art is still very much alive in Norwich

today with an eclectic host of galleries and exhibition

spaces adorning the city. The Norfolk & Norwich

Festival is one of the biggest arts festival in the country

and takes place in the city every May. The annual

Norwich Print Fair showcases the work of

contemporary printmakers in the city and has become

one of the best-loved independent shows in East

Anglia. The city is also home to the GoGoDragons art

trail where beautiful individually-painted dragons are

situated at key locations during the summer. New in

2014 was the fantastic Plein Air Painting competition

Paint Out Norwich at prestigious venues around the

city which will be taking place again this year.

Many artists have chosen Norwich and its surrounding

area as their home.

The prestigious Norwich Twenty Group was first formed

in 1944 and has since grown to more than seventy

members including painters, sculptors, printmakers and

photographers.

It is also a fantastic place to study visual arts with

some of the top courses in the country on offer.

North NorfolkWith its sweeping skies, picture-perfect beaches, rolling

dunes and pine forests, North Norfolk is a haven for

artists.

Dotted amongst this idyllic landscape are villages and

towns that play host to a wide variety of galleries, open

studios and exhibitions.

From the lovely seaside towns of Cromer and

Sheringham in the east to Wells-next-the sea and the

grand Holkham Estate, the coastal road joins together a

myriad of picturesque places of interest.

Inland lies the beautiful Georgian market town of Holt

whose range of galleries provides art lovers with an

eclectic mix of modern and contemporary art.

Many painters, sculptors and craftspeople have chosen

North Norfolk as their home and it's easy to see why.

The landscape provides rich inspiration for works of art

in all mediums. North Norfolk is also home to rising star

of the art world, 12-year-old Kieron Williamson - known

as Mini Monet - whose paintings have garnered huge

acclaim not just locally but across the world.

North Norfolk also hosts a wide and eclectic range of

arts festivals, some focusing purely on visual arts while

others span the whole artistic spectrum.

Cley Contemporary Art is one of the Eastern region's

most prestigious annual arts events and has attracted

thousands to its exhibitions in the villages of Salhouse

and Cley since 2000. Other highlights of the artistic

calendar include Holt Festival, Voewood Festival,

Cromer and Sheringham Art and Literary Festival and

the Ludham Festival.

East Norfolk

Ask someone whose never been to Norfolk what they

know about the county and one of the first things they

mention are the beautiful Norfolk Broads.

The Broads are a unique maze of lakes and rivers

dominating the county east of Norwich and out to the

North Sea. Covering more than 300 square

kilometres, the Broads include a wide variety of

habitats including fen, woodland and grazing marshes

and are home to a wide variety of birds and other

animals. It's an artist's dream with a picture-perfect

view around every river bend.

Dotted throughout this unique and stunning

landscape are many towns and villages such as

Wroxham, Brundall, Filby, Ludham, North Walsham

and Great Yarmouth on the coast.

The nineteenth century Norwich School of Painters -

including John Crome, John Sell Cotman and Henry

Bright - found great inspiration from this part of the

county and the waterways, boats and broadland

churches feature heavily in their works of art.

The Broads continue to inspire generation upon

generation of artists who flock to their quiet waterways

and tranquil meadows.

In 2014 the first ever 4-day Plein Air Painting Festival -

A Brush with the Broads - took place in and around

this region and it's back this year in September. Other

festivals in the region include the Ludham Arts Festival,

Great Yarmouth Arts Festival and the Out There

International Festival of Circus & Street Arts

South NorfolkSouth of Norwich and north of the meandering

Waveney River lies South Norfolk.

With picturesque villages and market towns in

abundance, this is a quiet and welcoming place for

artists of all genres. With a wealth of conservation

areas there are many beautiful village greens and

ancient woodlands from which to gain inspiration.

Many of the towns such as Diss, Harleston and

Wymondham are fiercely proud of their independent

shops which stock a range of handmade items from

local makers.

Many local groups of artists flourish in this region

including Wymondham Arts Forum which runs a varied

programme of exhibitions at the Arts Centre in the

town. The Waveney Springs Art Collective is a group of

artists and makers living and working in a rough 10

mile radius of Diss. Each year they hold the Waveney

Springs Art Trail around the town.

In nearby Harleston, the Harleston and Waveney Art Trail

Collective is a diverse group of professional artists from

the local area. Their art trail has taken place every

summer since 2005 and is now flourishing. Thetford's

Great Festival in late August, early September covers all

areas of the arts with a strong visual arts presence.

South Norfolk is also home to ARTSeast Magazine - the

region's premier arts publication.

West Norfolk

With its stunning coastline and historic market towns

and villages, West Norfolk provides inspiration for many

artists

Home to the Queen's Sandringham Estate, the region

has many beaches fit for royalty including Thornham,

Hunstanton and Snettisham. Sandringham Park itself

plays host to both a Spring and Christmas Craft Fair

showcasing the work of local makers. There is also a

permanent sculpture trail close to the visitor centre all

made by chainsaw carvers from natural tree trunks.

The towns of King's Lynn, Downham Market and

Swaffham, among others, have a thriving arts scene

with many art groups, galleries and exhibitions. Tucked

away in the villages across this region you will find

many craft centres and individual artists creating

stunning pieces.

West Norfolk is also home to many art-related festivals

throughout the year including the Kings Lynn Festival

which host exhibitions as part of a wider programme.

Other festivals focus purely on visual arts. The

Swaffham Visual Arts Festival celebrates West Norfolk

as an area rich in artists and craftsmen and culminates

in an Exhibition and Sale of Works of Art in November.

The Breckland Art Trail celebrated a successful third

year in 2014 with 57 artists in 25 venues taking part. In

and around the village of Dersingham, art lovers can

follow the Dersingham Art Trail at different times of the

year.

In the north of the region, the beautiful village of

Burnham Market is home to a wide range of galleries

to suit all tastes.

IpswichOne of England's oldest towns, Ipswich is made up of a

dynamic mix of old and new. Located on the estuary of

the River Orwell, it has long been a haven for artists of

all genres.

There are numerous museums and art galleries to

explore and art lovers will enjoy the redeveloped

waterfront area of the town. In Christchurch Mansion,

Ipswich holds impressive collections of work by

Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable.

The visual arts are prominent in the town. An example

of this are the many sculptures dotted throughout the

town at various locations. There is even a trail map

called Artathon that provides routes around Ipswich's

public sculptures.

One such statue is the famous Giles Grandma statue

(pictured), a homage to local Daily Express cartoonist

Carl Giles' beloved character. It is positioned to look up

at the office where Giles used to work.

Many artists call Ipswich home and the town has a

thriving Art Society, one of the longest-established in

the country dating from 1874.

The highly-renowned Ipswich Arts Festival - known as

Ip-Art - lights up the town every summer and has a

strong visual arts presence.

Ipswich is also a fantastic place to study a range of art

courses and is a dynamic place for students to

immerse themselves in local culture.

North SuffolkJust across the River Waveney from Norfolk lies the

beautiful North Suffolk countryside.

Idyllic towns and villages such as Eye, Bungay and

Beccles weave their way along the Waveney Valley

providing welcome stops for lovers of the arts.

Just across the border from the Norfolk village of

Harleston lies the pretty village of Mendham - the

birthplace of famous Suffolk painter Sir Alfred

Munnings. Mendham Mill - Munnings' childhood home

- is now luxury holiday accommodation and many of

the scenes from his famous paintings are still

recognisable today.

The towns of this region house a variety of galleries, art

shops and exhibition spaces.

In Bungay, art group Black Dog Arts organises events

and workshops, including a Garden Art Trail. It is also

home to the ever popular Antiques Street Fair which

attracts thousands to the town. The Fisher Theatre in

Bungay hold exhibitions of paintings in the theatre

itself but also in their own Gallery.

Beccles also holds a very popular antiques street

market which has over 100 stalls. The town also has a

thriving Art Society - the Beccles Society of Artists -

which meets monthly.

2014 saw the inaugural Eye Arts Festival in this pretty

Suffolk village which combined all genres of art across

one weekend.

East SuffolkThe picturesque Suffolk coastline and its inland towns

provide a home to many artists who flock to paint its

picturesque views.

The coastal towns of Lowestoft, Southwold and

Aldeburgh - and the surrounding villages - are home to

many galleries and provide fantastic inspiration for

artists of all genres. Iconic landmarks such

as Southwold Pier and the House in the

Clouds in Thorpeness provide excellent

material for artists as well as being popular

with tourists to the region. Visitors to

Aldeburgh Beach can admire Maggi

Hamblings's sculpture Scallop.

Further inland, towns such as Halesworth and

Woodbridge also have excellent galleries and

museums and are a haven for art lovers.

The region is also home to some excellent

festivals and events such as the Southwold

Arts Festival which incorporates exhibitions,

art talks and the chance to see artists at work.

The pretty market town of Halesworth has a

thriving art scene and hosts The Halesworth

Arts Festival which has excellent exhibitions

during its programme of events. The two-day

Woodbridge Art and Music Event showcases

both genres in intimate settings by the River

Deben. The renowned Latitude Festival held

at Henham Park, near Southwold brings

thousands to the region and has a strong

visual arts presence - even the resident sheep

South SuffolkAdjoining the Essex borders, South Suffolk is renowned

for its art credentials. It is also a beautiful part of the

county, steeped in history.

In Sudbury, is Gainsborough's House, the birthplace of

Thomas Gainsborough. Now a museum,

Gainsborough's House has a permanent collection of

the artist's work encompassing his whole career.

The nearby villages of Lavenham and Long Melford

have long been distinguished as artistic hotspots with

an eclectic mix of galleries lining their picture-postcard

streets.

Medieval Lavenham has changed little in appearance

since the Tudor era when it flourished as a prosperous

wool town. Its impressive array of Tudor buildings and

its spectacular church has drawn artists to its streets

for decades.

Long Melford is famed for its antique shops - indeed

the well-known TV series Lovejoy was filmed here - but

is also home to a wide selection of galleries. It is also

the site of Long Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall,

beautiful stately homes that hold a wealth of artistic

works within their walls. Both villages hold craft fairs

throughout the year.

Just to the west lie the pretty villages of Cavendish and

Clare, home to artists, galleries, antique shops and

excellent museums.

When it comes to festivals, the area has a lot to offer.

The bi-annual Lavenham Art Festival provides the

opportunity to see artists of many genres at work. An

art trail - Artists around Sudbury - invited visitors to visit

the studios of 10 artists from the Sudbury area in 2014.

Clare is home to a long-established antiques fair

famous for the wide range of goods on offer.

West SuffolkTo the west, Suffolk is home to range of beautiful towns

and tourist attractions such as Bury St Edmunds,

Newmarket, Haverhill and Brandon.

This historic market town of Bury St Edmunds has a rich

heritage and is home to a wealth of galleries and

exhibition spaces alongside its beautiful cathedral,

Abbey Gardens and museums.

This year up to 40 business owners in the

town will help promote local arts by

exhibiting artist's work for sale in their shop

windows. It forms part of an art trail for the

newly-formed Bury St Edmund's Festival of

Ideas.

Just outside Bury is Blackthorpe Barn in

Rougham which is home to the annual

exhibition of work by dynamic group Artworks

which comprises 30 contemporary artists

from the region. The Bury St Edmunds Art

Society has been established for over 60

years to promote artists and the visual arts in

the surrounding area and holds a popular

summer exhibition.

Newmarket, famed for its racecourse, is

home to many artists specialising in

equestrian art and is also home to the

National Horseracing Museum, which holds

exhibitions of sporting art. It is also home to

the British Sporting Art Trust.

Home to one of Suffolk's largest arts festival,

Haverhill has a vibrant arts scene and its very

own arts centre.

Emily Jarvis

Emily is one of the East's up and coming

young artists who has a very unique style of

portraiture which she adopts in both her

own work and regular commissions. Her

abstract work contains great movement and

vibrant colours and the use of mixed media

allows a reflective finish to the canvases.

In the new series, 'Umbrellas', the artist

depicts her subjects with faces hidden by an

umbrella which is an expressionist departure

from her more classical-but-with-a-twist

style of portraiture.

We are excited to have Emily's work on the

cover of the Arts Directory for 2015! If you

would like to see the range of Emily's talents

then please visit her website –

exhibitions and press releases.

Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) was a major figure in the great tradition of British horse painting, but his popular romanticising of life in the first half of the 20th century is less well recognised. Immensely successful, yet controversial, he became the scourge of modern art in his position as President of the Royal Academy. Visitors to the Munnings Art Museum in his former home, Castle House, can explore the life and work of this prolific East Anglian artist.

Constable Country

ARTSeast Visual Arts Directory

Located on the Suffolk/Essex border, is a beautiful

swathe of villages known as Constable Country. As the

name suggests, renowned artist John Constable was

born here and many of his most famous paintings were

inspired by the local landscape including The Hay Wain.

Constable was born in East Bergholt where his father

owned Flatford Mill. He went to school in Lavenham

and Dedham before training as a miller and painting

and drawing in his spare time.

The main villages in the area include Dedham, Lawford,

Flatford, East Bergholt and Capel St Mary. The National

Trust has a centre at Flatford and offers tours of the

sites Constable

painted including his

painting Boat-

Building near Flatford

Mill.

Dedham is also home

to The Munnings Art

Museum at Castle

House where famous

painter Sir Alfred Munnings lived and worked. Lady

Munnings opened Castle House to the public in 1961,

two years after his death.
