Rainy weather is out, and the warmer temps have officially set in. This issue stretches three weeks and is packed with lots to do for the entire family.

May 23 is a day of hula skirt-dancing and Beach Boy jammin’. The Gulf State Park’s second annual luau will take place with professional dancers from Fort Lauderdale. But, hurry and get your tickets fast. There’s only a limited number available for this Hawaiian show.

Also introducing the Memorial Day weekend and official start of summer is the Beach Boys and America Concert on May 23. Be sure to check out our Beachin’ editor Destiny Brown’s interview with Beach Boy Bruce Johnston.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 25 and many events around the county are celebrating the lives of those who died serving our country. The Baldwin Pops Memorial Day Concert is Mon-day night at Henry George Park and Fort Morgan’s Memorial Day Tribute is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 23, featuring historical interpreters guiding tours throughout the day. Don’t see an event in your area? Call your local chamber or city to check for other events.

The last weekend in May is home to the Grandman Triathlon along the Fairhope Pier before it winds through the streets of downtown Fairhope. Head to Central Baldwin and check out cruises, old and new, at the Silverhill Memorial Car Show. In the past, the car show has benefitted local Boy Scout troops and town renovations, among other projects. This year, pro-ceeds will go toward funding a veterans memorial in town.

The first weekend in June, head down to the Florida-Alabama line to listen to some local musicians at Shindig in the Sand, and help raise funds for the Gulf Coast Musicians’ As-sistance Fund (GCMAF), which is intended to keep Gulf Coast music alive by sustaining its musicians. GCMAF partners with health providers and help cut the high cost of urgent medi-cal care for its musicians.

So get out, enjoy the breeze and attend a car show, concerts, events, the list is endless. Be sure to check out our wine, hunting, outdoors, food and family fun columns.

An exciting opener to the season will be a luau Memorial Day weekend on the beach at Gulf State Park.

Park Superintendent Lisa Laraway said the same com-pany is being brought in to conduct the event again after a successful show in May 2014.

“We brought in entertainers from a professional luau company from Fort Lauderdale,” Laraway said. “We’ve got dancers, fire dancers, an emcee; it’s going to be very well done.”

Outside the roped area, beachgoers and other visitors will be able to see the action.

“We’ll have tents for the general public, if they want to come out and watch the luau,” Laraway said.

Last year's beach luau sold almost 304 tickets, so this year's event will accommodate 512 guests.

An $85 VIP ticket gets you unlimited access to a spe-cial food buffet, beverages, a special lei made from fresh orchids and reserved seating in the first three rows. The $55 general admission ticket gets you one pass at the buf-fet and one drink or two soft drinks.

The Baldwin Pops will host its Memorial Day concert in Fairhope at Henry George Park May 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The band is a mix of volunteer musicians from Baldwin and surrounding counties. Pops concerts are always free to the public, as the band is committed to enhancing the cultural environment of the area.

Local musicians Regina Bush and Tom Robinson, direc-tor of Continuing Education of Faulkner State Community College Borden Morrow and band directors Joe Riemer and Steve Sims founded the band in May 1997.

Joe is the retired director of the Bay Minette Middle School band; Steve is the former director of the Fairhope High School band.

The concerts have largely been a community team effort with support from the media, city leaders, city employees and individuals who provide lighting and sound.

The band performs all types of music from classical and Broadway to Dixieland and jazz.

Beware of loud noises. If you have a little little one, and this will be their first

experience around fireworks, be prepared for water works. Everything is new and, for the most part, thrilling. Loud noises don’t usually fall into that category. Be sure to hold them close and have a favorite stuffed animal handy. Ear plugs or noise-cancelling headsets are better, but not necessary.

As always, just be sure to be aware of your child’s disposition. If they are getting too fussy, or look rundown, there’s no shame in packing up early. Just getting out can be a victory in itself!


Summer holidays are a great time to get your little ones out and about. Time to shake off the winter chill and get a little Vitamin D into their systems. With Memorial Day right around the cor-ner, there are a few things you need to remember when bringing your little one.

Sunscreen is a MUST! If your child is under 6 months old, be

wary. At that age, the skin is still too sensi-tive for that. Instead, try a light long-sleeve shirt and bring a sun hat regardless of age.

Stay hydrated. Summers are hot and hard on all of us, but can be a

blast with enough water intake. Keep a refillable bottle with you and don’t miss an opportunity to fill it up. Offer water (or breast milk, depending on age) often and stay in the shade as much as possible.

Summer Movie Series

CULTURALLY SPEAKING

Light up your summer nights with three free, family-friendly movies at Fairhoper’s Community Park the first Thursday of June, July and August, sponsored by the City of Fairhope Public Utilities and the Downtown Fairhope Business As-sociation.

Moviegoers are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic (no alcohol or glass containers) and relax with the whole family. The movie will begin 15 minutes after sunset or approxi-mately 7:30 p.m.

“We are really excited to offer something in the summertime for families to look forward to,” said Fairhope Special Events Coordinator Paige Turberville. “With the park's recent makeover and reopening, we now have a perfect venue for families to get together on a summer evening and enjoy a movie.”

Merchants will have popcorn and refreshments available and will also be giving away glow-in-the-dark items, Turberville said.

All you need to do is grab a lawn chair, pack a picnic and sit back and enjoy the show.

The Beach Boys have en-lightened generations about the importance

of beach life with songs about surfing, California liv-ing and places like their hit song, “Kokomo.” With tens of millions of albums sold and an abundance of hit singles, the Beach Boys are known as one of the bands that pioneered pop music.

Grammy-winning song-writer Bruce Johnston joined The Beach Boys in 1965, replacing Glen Campbell. Highly regarded as a singer-songwriter, John-ston’s vocal work with such legendary artists as Elton John and Pink Floyd firmly established him among rock’s elite artists.

Bruce gave The Buzz an exclusive interview on why he loves being in the Beach Boys, what to expect at the concert and more.

Q: What can someone expect from a Beach Boys show?

BJ: Every night we change the set list. It’s more of a combination of moving furniture and taking furni-ture away and there will be tons of hits in the middle of the process. Anybody that you go listen to, you want to hear what they did and what they’re doing.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being in the Beach Boys?

BJ: I know it’s a weird thing, but No.1, I like set

list changing every night. No. 2, I like to travel. We’re going to England after we see you. The English want to hear everything and we have a sold out show.

I like to surf a lot and I squeeze that in when I can, but the Beach Boys are like a second family. I could go on and on about the things I like about it.

Q: What are some things you are excited about during your tour?

BJ: In the middle of it, we're going to be in Jack-sonville. We’re having the Jacksonville symphony do-ing all of our songs. I’m not an unhappy guy. Last year, we did 142 concerts.

Q: Have you ever been to or performed in Orange Beach?

BJ: I don’t remember Or-ange Beach, but I do remem-ber going to Gulf Shores. I know it’s going to be really lovely. It’s going to be fan-

tastic.

Q: Do you still write songs?BJ: I decided to put my

songwriting on hold be-cause I figured I would get older and wrinkle, but my songwriting wouldn’t. I know the direction to take the song; it’s one of two di-rections. I know what I can do and I know the place for my songs to live is country radio and not hip hop or modern rock. I’ve still got plenty to do with what I think is the greater part of my artistry.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add to this interview?

BJ: Here’s one thing — use sunscreen. I'm serious. I spent so many years not using it and I’m not kid-ding that you think your invincible and then that stuff catches up to you. Protect yourself, and that’s my suggestion.

In addition to founding Beach Boy Mike Love (lead vocals) and Beach Boy vet Bruce Johnston (vocals/keyboards) — Jeffrey Fos-kett (guitar/vocals), Randell Kirsch (bass/vocals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill of The Cowsills (percussion /vocals) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals) round out the band.

Shindig on the Sand re-turns for a third year straight and you can be

sure the Flora-Bama will get this party right when it returns June 5 to 7.

One of the traditions nur-tured and made strong by the Flora-Bama’s continued sup-port is the promotion of the Gulf Coast music scene. The Shindig will offer a chance to not only enjoy those musi-cians, but a way to support them as well.

The proceeds brought in by the crowds will go to the

Flora-Bama’s Gulf Coast Musi-cians’ Assistance Fund (GC-MAF), which is intended to keep Gulf Coast music alive by sustaining its musicians in mind, body and spirit. It provides a way for GCMAF to partner with health providers and help cut the high cost of urgent medical care for its musicians. Even a simple, low-cost physical can result in early detection of problems.

In 2014, headliner Billy Currington played on a huge stage in the sand, and while a huge stage hasn’t been decided on, some kind of stage will be in the sand because it is, after all, the Shindig in the Sand.

Oh, how I love one-dish dinners. There is the all-powerful slow cooker, the Southern casserole

and one-dish stovetop cooking, but I tried a new method recently that com-bines my love for cooking new dishes with my current need for simple recipes.

There’s a whole cookbook about this concept called “Sheet Pan Suppers” (plus breakfasts, desserts and snacks) by Molly Gilbert, and I want it. My birthday is June 27; just saying.

Just kidding. Anyway, this was a fun little experiment, and I absolutely

love the peanut sauce everything is coated in. We’ve done this twice, and the second time we omitted the chicken and just made the broccoli — such a good, flavorful side dish. Also, we tried chunky peanut butter the second time and

it was divine.

Unusual ingredients alertSesame oil: I left it out of recipes for years, but I finally

broke down and bought some at Publix (in the ethnic foods section) for like $4. Totally worth it. I use it all the time now.

Sriracha: If you haven’t gotten on the sriracha bandwagon, it’s time. It’s at pretty much every grocery store, also on the ethnic/Asian aisle.

Rice vinegar: Another ingredient I skipped or substituted for years. It’s inexpensive and easy to find, and again, we use it all the time now that we have it.

Quick chicken and broccoli with spicy peanut sauce

Ingredientsn 1 tablespoon packed dark brown sugarn 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons creamy or chunky peanut butter n 1 tablespoon sesame oiln 1/4 cup low-sodium soy saucen 1 tablespoon sriracha saucen 1 tablespoon rice vinegarn 1/4 cup warm watern 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juicen 1 pound broccoli, cut up n 4 to 6 thin-cut boneless, skinless chicken breasts or cutlets

(1 to 1 1/2 pounds total)

PreparationPreheat the oven to 375 F. Line a sheet pan with aluminum foil

and mist it with cooking spray. Whisk together the brown sugar, peanut butter, sesame oil, soy

sauce, sriracha, vinegar, water and lime juice in a medium-size bowl until smooth. Set aside 1/4 cup of the peanut sauce for serving.

Rub the broccoli and chicken with the remaining peanut sauce to thickly coat, and arrange them in a tight single layer on the prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes or until chicken is done. Broccoli will be well done and have crispy edges.

Serve the chicken and broccoli hot from the oven with the reserved dipping sauce alongside.Recipe adapted from SplendidTable.com.

It is for those looking to test their physical fitness. The annual Grandman Triathlon will be held in Fairhope at 7 a.m. May 30.

The event, which goes to support Mobile Baykeeper, Gulf Coast Area Triathletes and Camp Rap-A-Hope is presented by Publix.

The race begins with a one-third mile swim, continues with a 18-mile bike ride through Fairhope and ends with a 3.1-mile run along the Bay.

Swimmers will jump, not dive, off the southside of Fairhope’s pier, swim approximately 200 yards south and then turn east toward the shore. Buoys will mark the course and kayaks will be patrolling to guide swimmers or offer support to those in distress.

Racers will transition to their bikes in the area between the fountain and the pier, and then make an 18-mile loop by the bay and through the streets of Fairhope.

Back at transition, bikers will dismount and begin the last leg of the triathlon, a 5K (3.1

mile) run.

More than 100 volunteers are needed for May 29 and 30 to set up the race course, conduct body marking, direct racer traffic, help with the post-race party and clean up after the event. Forms to become a volunteer can be found on the Grandman’s website.

First timers are encouraged to attend the 6 p.m. work-shop at Health and Fitness Expo Friday to speak with experienced racers on what to expect. Videos for first time racers can be found online.

Dear Cosmo’s Sesame Seared Tuna Salad,

I have never loved a salad as much as I love you. I live 45 minutes from Cosmo’s on a no-traffic day, but you’re worth the drive.

Crunchy romaine lettuce, an abundance of dried cranberries, as many blue cheese crumbles as possible (the waiter brings out a bowl of them and adds as much as the diner requests) and toasted sunflower seeds all tossed in the most amazing soy vinai-grette and served with six ounces of seared, sesame-seed coated yellowfin tuna (always get it rare) and topped with cool-looking crispy glass noodles … Could a salad get any better than that? Not in my world.

Recently, I drove down to Orange Beach to attend a bachelorette party, and I thought dinner was at Cosmo’s, so I dreamed about you for weeks. Turns out, we actu-ally went to Cobalt (same ownership as Cosmo’s, so I was confused). Fortunately, Cobalt serves another interesting salad, the blackened tuna salad with candied pecans, goat cheese, orange segments and pickled vegetables tossed in a champagne citrus

vinaigrette. While it, too, was delicious, I left the Island still missing you.

So I made another trip to Orange Beach a couple of weeks later to meet some friends for dinner and made sure we ate at Cosmo’s. Because that’s how great you are.

Sesame Seared Tuna Salad, you are my favorite piece of food on the Island. I have never, and probably will never, order any-thing else at Cosmo’s. Except an appetizer of firecracker shrimp. But that’s another love letter.

A recent email from the marketing body for all South African wines in the U.S. sparked my curiosity,

and I decided to do a little research into the South African wine industry. After all, Pinotage is one of my favorite wines. In my research, ‘Steen’ continued pop-ping up and I wondered how many people actually knew what it meant.

Steen is a white wine grape variety originally from the Loire Valley of France and is the most widely planted variety in South Africa. You may know it as Chenin Blanc.

It’s high acidity means it can be used to make everything from sparkling wines to well-balanced dessert wines.

When drinking Chenin Blanvc or Steen, one should expect a fresh fruit and delicate floral aroma with a mass of fruit flavors including pineapple, guava, melon, apricot or apple.

South Africa’s wine history dates back to 1655 when the Dutch planted the first vineyards just outside of Cape Town. Since then, wine style has evolved to combine the best of the old and new; bright, new world fruit is often

blended with fruit from 40-year-old bush vines.

The end of apart-heid allowed wine-makers to travel the world and learn mod-

ern winemaking tech-niques and with their

new skills, winemakers have begun to craft a national identity with an emphasis on terroir-driven wines. To-day South Africa is the eighth largest producer of wine globally while con-taining only 1.5 percent of the world’s vineyards.

And as the South African wine indus-try flourishes, an unexpected consumer has found the vineyards an easy target for a tasty treat; often getting drunk on the fallen fruit fermented in the sun. Baboons are found in most parts of South Africa and now some winemak-ers are using the assistance of baboons in identifying better grapes. Baboons tend to select grapes at optimum ripe-ness with an uncanny ability to detect the correct degree of skin or pip green-ness. They also steer away from grapes grown on vines infected with leaf-roll virus or those growing on blocks that had unbalanced acid and pH levels due to over-cropping.

Give that old classic a new shine or just bring your walking shoes and your shades to check out the competition as the Gear Jammers Car Club hosts

its annual Memorial Car Show on Saturday, May 30 in Town Park Square along Highway 104 and County Road 55 in Silverhill.

If the weather cooperates, more than 200 cars from the 1920s all the way up to present day are expected to participate, said Frankie Kucera, who has coordinated the event since its beginning.

After work on the Little Hall was completed in Decem-ber with dedication ceremonies held in January, focus of this year’s fundraising will shift to raising funds to con-struct a memorial in Silverhill for local veterans.

“We’re always looking to support a worthy cause,” Kucera said, “and years ago there used to be a war me-morial in Silverhill. I’ve talked to several people asking whatever happened to that memorial and wanting to see something like that in Silverhill again, so we’re going to do what we can to make that happen.”

Silverhill Covenant Church will be providing early morning coffee and donuts for participants. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase on site.

Pre-registration by May 20 costs $20. Show day registra-tion will be held from 8 a.m. to noon. Cost is $25 for the first vehicle; $15 for a second or third vehicle. Judging begins at 11 a.m.
