If you ever need a good reality

check regarding your abilities to run

    a handgun during competitive

speed and accuracy drills, I suggest

spending a day or two with a

handful of top firearms writers and

    editors.

Thats what I did recently at anevent at Smith & Wesson head-

quarters, and it worked like a

    charm.

    Reality? Check.

Now, Im not at liberty to say

    who joined memostly because

Im not sure how their respective

    bosses would feel about them

associating with the likes of me

but suffice to say that youd recog-nize their bylines, websites and

    publication titles pretty quickly.

Of course, we all paled in com-

parison to the well-honed skills of

top IDPA shooter Tom Yost, who

    splits his time between shooting

    competition leaderboards and

consulting with S&W. Tom joined us

in the classroom and on the range,

and after a little coaxing, he took aturn running the handgun course he

    had set up for us.

    Reality? Altered.

    Tom also spent a graciously

    inordinate amount of time

brainstorming how to get my big

mitts to fit snugly around one of the

small handguns we were test firing.

Its always a bit awkward when

your index finger extends past the

    muzzle.

    Away from the range,

however, I was reminded of how

    non-competitive the writers and

editors in this industry always seemto be. Ive seldom met a group so

willing to pool their knowledge and

    expertise for the betterment of

    others.

I guess the old adage is true

    when applied to the shooting

sports; all ships rise with a rising

    tide.

So even though I hadnt met

any of the other seven attendeesprior to the S&W event, I left

knowing that I can turn to any one

of them in the future for informa-

tion or clarification in their areas of

    specialization. After seeing them

shoot, Id have to consider them

    fast friends.

    Reality? Awesome. GW

nated the M1905, were used on theGarand as well as the Springfield.

This was a long bayonet with a 16-

inch blade. Note: World War I En-

field rifle bayonets will not fit the

    Garand.

    Production of Garands in-

    creased dramatically as the United

States entered World War II; hence,

a new production version of the

M1905 was made for use on the

Garand and Springfield, the latter ofwhich was still being produced to

    supplement the Garand. This bayo-

net is often called the M1942.

    In 1943 a shorter bayonetde-

signed to conserve steel and also

    be less cumbersomewas pro-

duced with a 10-inch blade. This

    was designated the M1 Bayonet.

The M1 bayonet proved handier and

more popular than the longerM1905/1942, so many of the longer

blades were trimmed to 10 inches.

    These are sometimes designated

M1905E1. Toward the end of the Ko-

rean War, still another Garand bay-

onet was produced, based on the

M3 Trench Knife. This bayonet was

    known as the M5.

Since you have a late World

War II Garand, I would recommendyou get either one of the short M1

bayonets or one of the shortened

    M1905E1 bayonets. Normally, bayo-

nets produced as an M1 bayonet

will be more expensive than one of

the altered M1905 bayonets, but ei-

ther would be correct for your rifle.

    GW

Question: I recently acquireda World War II M1 Garand pro-

    duced by Springfield Armory

in 1944. I would like to get the

proper bayonet for it, but Ive

    found various bayonets at

    widely differing prices. Which

    is the correct bayonet?

    Michael T., Chicago, IL

    Leroy Thompson Answers: There

are various bayonets that are cor-

rect for the Garand. For the earliest

    production Garands during the

    1930s, and up until 1941 or 1942,

at bottom. Note that the fuller (groove in the blade) is not the full length of the blade,

indicating this bayonet was produced with a 10-inch blade. Those 10-inch bayonets

shortened from M1905 or M1942 bayonets will have a fuller that runs the full length of

    the blade.

    18/100

    18 GUN WORLD | OCT 2014 www.gunworld.com

    Having recently enjoyed a

    couple of shooting experiences

with a pair of new Austrian hand-

guns, I grabbed the opportunity to

    try out a German-made 9mm with

    a 15-round payload (10-round

    magazines are provided in states

with limits). This proved to be theright decision, because as of this

    writing, H&Ks new ambidextrous

pistol has put round after round

    downrange without a hiccup, and

what I aimed at, I hit.

With the VP9, H&K has incor-

    porated an adjustable grip frame

    with three interchangeable back

straps and three sets of grip panels

that allow, according to my calcula-tions, 27 different configurations to

fit just about any human hand on

the planet. I had a bit of trouble

swapping out the panels that were

installed when the pistol arrived for

an evaluation, but it was not signifi-

cant enough to complain about. A

few taps with a plastic mallet and

punch did the trick, and within acouple of minutes, I had installed

the right combination of grip panels

and flat back strap to make this

    handgun fit like a glove.

    There is something else about

the VP9 I want to mention right up

front because it quickly won my ap-

    proval. H&Ks three-dot sights fea-

ture a luminous paint (tritium night

sights are available as an option foran extra $50) that glows brightly

after a dose of bright light. The

glow lasts for a while, too, making

the sights on this pistol easy to pick

up, even in low light. Sights are

    dovetailed front and rear.

    The dimensions are very close

to my normal carry gun, a cus-tomized lightweight Colt Com-

mander. If there is a difference in

the sight radius, it is negligible,

    which perhaps accounted for my

ability to zero on targets quickly.

The factory sight radius on a stan-

    dard Commander is 5.75 inches,

while the radius on the VP9 is 6.38

inches. I installed Trijicon sights on

my pistol, which changes things abit, so as noted above, the end

difference is a fraction of an inch.

    The H&Ks 4.09-inch cold

    hammer-forged Polygon barrel is

cut with six grooves on a right-hand

    1:9.8-inch twist.

    The VP9s recoil is very

manageable. It ejects empties far to

the right, and even while shooting

some imported ammunition thegun suffered nary a malfunction.

    This is an important consideration

    because 9mm ammunition is pretty

    much available anywhere in the

world, and the fact that the VP9

appears able to digest it all means

this gun will run in any time zone or

    hemisphere.

    Field-stripping the VP9 is so

simple, even a guy like me whooccasionally grows extra thumbs

    while cleaning pistols should have

no trouble at all breaking down the

    gun into components.

    Remove the magazine and

check to make sure the chamber is

empty by cycling the slide back and

forth several times. With the slide

    back, rotate the disassembly latch

    POLYMER FRAME

With its polymer frame, theVP9 hits the scale at 26.56 ounces

when empty. The frame has a

molded accessory rail in front of the

trigger guard, and all of the inter-

    changeable grip panels are textured

for a firm grip, even in the rain. In my

    native Pacific Northwest during my

evaluation, I had the opportunity to

test that grip. Like other H&K mod-

els, the VP9 magazine release is apivoting latch at the rear of the trig-

ger guard, and either right- or left-

    handed shooters can use it.

    Theres also an ambidextrous

    slide stop/release and cocking

serrations at the front and rear.

Also, the VP9 designers have added

    what they call charging supports

at the back end of the rear cocking

serrations. Its a little part that risesout of the slide on both sides to

give an extra bit of resistance for

the hand during the cycling action. They are held in place by the dove-

    tailed sight in the rear.

The front strap has modest fin-

ger grooves, and this may also ac-

count for a better fit in my hand, but

having the ability to alter the func-

    tional dimension of this pistolthat

is, the diameter of the grip frame by

    swapping out the various inserts

makes the H&K VP9 essentially agun for every man and woman.

    Immediately, I noticed the trig-

    ger stroke seemed lighter than

    other striker-fired handguns Ive

    sampled over the years. According

    to H&K, this pistol has a 5.4-pound

trigger pull and it travels .24 inches.

    It resets quickly, too.

Model 57 Story & Photos by Terrill Hoffman

In the current marketplace, the AR-15 can be found in

just about every configuration imaginable. Yankee Hill

Machine has made sure that the Model 57 will stand

out in the crowd by updating the entire rifle with quality

parts. The billet upper and lower receivers are just the

start to remodeling the entire rifle.

    Yankee Hill Machine made an

impact on the AR marketplace last

year with the introduction of the

Desert Enforcer. It was not its first

AR, but it was truly a showcase for

its abilities. YHM began, and grew, as

a company by making various AR

parts and accessories for the general

    public and AR manufacturers.

Eventually, manufacturing the vari-ous parts developed into manufac-

    turing the entire rifle.

    The Desert Enforcer was not

the first AR rifle Yankee Hill Ma-

chine built, but it was a milestone

for the company. This new rifle de-

sign also showed that Yankee Hill

    Machine was serious about becom-

    ing a full-fledged rifle company.

After the introduction of theDesert Enforcer, you would have

The Model 57 has the trigger, bolt release, safety and magazine release all in the standard locations, but it has transformed the

aesthetics of the rifle with the use of billet receivers. The integral trigger guard and horizontal ball cuts in the receivers look great, but

they also have functional purposes. By using removable Warne scope rings, I was able to take advantage of the Yankee Hill back-up sights.

There are times when a manufacturer has to

acknowledge the ability of another company.

Magpul has led the way in aftermarket butt

stocks for the AR-15 and Yankee Hill has made

the Magpul CTR standard equipment on the

Model 57. The rifle can be adjusted to fit the

shooter, rather than the shooter having to ad-

    just to the rifle.

The upper has the traditional for-

ward assist and shell deflector, but

it also has horizontal grooving to re-

    duce weight and add aesthetics.

The two receivers are mated with

the use of their E-Zpull takedown

Unlike rifles of the past, the flat-top receiver of the modern AR-15 greatly enhances the

ability to mount optics. The front sight tower and rear sight/carry handle are being

replaced with scopes and red-dot sighting systems. Iron sights are now being considered

as backups for your optics, but the Yankee Hill sights are adjustable for both windage and

elevation. Both units fold out of the way when a scope is used, but can be instantly

    deployed when needed.

There is no rule that says stylish looks and function

cant go hand in hand. The new Slant muzzle brake is

actually a hybrid brake and compensator. During a firing

session, it reduced the felt recoil and limited muzzle rise.

Of course, the goal is to keep the barrel on target and

the muzzle brake did an excellent job.

inch barrel in your choice of a 1:7

or 1:9 twist rate. Made from 4140

    steel, the barrel is heat-treated

    prior to adding the melonite,

    quench-polish-quench (QPQ)

finish. While we may miss thedeep blue metal finish found on

    the older sporting arms, it

    wouldnt compare to the protec-

    tion and wear-resistance of the

    melonite, QPQ process.

    Taking the barrel one more

step, YHM has fluted the barrel

both forward and aft of the gas

block to improve rigidity and aid

barrel cooling. A dimpled patternhas also been applied in the

fluted portion forward of the gas

    block. M4-style feed ramps can

be found on the barrel extension

    and upper receiver.

Since the Model 57 will be

available in 5.56 NATO, 6.8 SPC,

    and .300 Blackout, the dust

cover will be marked with the

caliber designation. The directgas impingement system is

    carbine length and the low-

profile gas block and tube is

    totally protected by the new

    style free-floated handguard.

The handguard is part of the

    YHM Specter series that ex-

It also extends the upper rail on

the flattop receiver another 9 inches.

    Shorter rail sections are ma-

    the muzzle brake and handguard

adds a little additional flair to theappearance of the rifle. The model

57 is optics ready with the flat top

receiver, but has the YHM Quick De-

    ploy Sight System as standard

    equipment.

Also standard is the TAC Latch

    charging handle and the Magpul

MOE pistol grip. The CTR buttstock

and Gen 2 PMAG magazines are

also Magpul units. The overall length of the rifle is

37.5 inches, with the buttstock fully

    extended. The unloaded rifle

    weighs 7.43 pounds. The combina-

    tion of electroplate, melonite, and

    parkerizing blends well from one

finish to the next and the rifle has a

    smooth, black appearance. The

    slim-angled handguard, angled

muzzle brake, fluted barrel, and ma-chined horizontal lightening cuts

give the Model 57 a trim, rakish

    appearance.Overall, the Model 57 is a

testament to the ability of the

    machinist at Yankee Hill Machine,

    the imagination of its designers,

    and the quality of modern

    CAD/CAM manufacturing.

    RANGE TIME

As pleased as I was with the

appearance of the Model 57, I wasalso eager to take it to the range.

After sighting in the rifle with a low-

    powered scope (1 to 4x) I began

shooting for accuracy at the stan-

    dard 100 yards.

    Hornady 60-grain TAP and

    Winchester 55-grain FMJ gave

    similar results with five-shot groups

ranging from 1 and 1 inches. As

advertised, the trigger pull was inthe 5-pound range, but to be

honest, my scale only goes to 4

pounds, so I wont swear that num-ber to be exact. I would love to test

a greater variety of ammunition, a

few of my reloads, and a higher

    magnification scope, but the ammo

shortage and the time limit reared

    its ugly head.

I was able to run through my

    self-erected zombie course sev-

eral times and can report that the

rifle ran like you would expect froman AR; a very smooth and well-built

AR. Handling was quick and agile.

To my surprise, the Slant Series

muzzle brake was one of the few

units I have tried that showed a no-

    ticeable difference in performance.

    Controlled double taps were easily

obtainable and I will reconsider the

    muzzle devices on my personal

    rifles.After my session at 100 yards, I

Few would argue that the ergonomics of theAR-15 is a major improvement over the rifles of the

past and the Model 57 carries on this tradition. It

proved to be well balanced and quick during rapid

fire drills. Even though Yankee Hill has modified just

about every part of this rifle, it did so without altering

the basic feel of the firearm.

While there may have been considerable interest inthe Smith & Wesson Model 29 in .44 RemingtonMagnum when it was first released in 1955, it

wasnt until the release of a certain 1971 detective film(and its sequels) that the S&W factory became literallyinundated with orders. Eventually, variations of that originalModel 29 began to appear, including one released onlyrecently that resulted in making this great gun even better:the Model 629 .44 Magnum Hunter.

    36/100

GREAT, MADE GREATEREven though the Magnum

    Hunter was generally designed to

be a hunting firearm, it will feel

equally at home in the hands of a

    long-range competitive shooter, or

    as an attention-grabbing deterrent

in the event of a home invasion.

Like the original Model 29, its N-

    Frame construction is well suited

for the big and powerful .44 Mag-num cartridge.

While I have to admit I am

really fond of the original Model 29

    Goncalo Alves wood grips, the

    synthetic grips of the Magnum

Hunter are likely a better match for

its heavy recoil. Add the ported

muzzle brake to the equation and

you have about as much recoil

dampening potential as is possiblein a big-bore hand cannon.

I particularly like that the Mag-num Hunter comes equipped with

    an integral Picatinny rail, which

    makes mounting the included 1x

    red-dot/green-dot sight, or a hand-

gun scope, a breeze. The dot sight

came with its own set of Weaver-

style rings, but for mounting a

scope, it will likely require a set of

high rings in order for the scope to

be able to clear the front and rearsights.

I took full advantage of this

    versatility and tested the Magnum

Hunter with both the supplied UTG

    1x25mm 6-inch Commando 30mm

dot sight, as well as with a Bushnell

    3200 Elite 2-6x32mm handgun

scope. For the scope mounting, I

used a set of steel Warne Maxima

high rings and found they workedperfectly for the application.

Despite all its firepower, theModel 629 Magnum Hunter weighs

    a modest 57.5 ounces, making it a

    shooter-friendly weapon for field

use. Whether your travels put you in

pursuit of antsy whitetails in the

hardwood forests of the south or

tracking nasty feral hogs in the

    desert southwest, youll find the

    fast-handling and quick-to-point

abilities of the Magnum Hunter tobe an advantage.

    With the supplied dot sight

    mounted, my scale indicated a

weight of 67 ounces. For compari-

son, S&Ws 460 XVR can tip the

scales at a whopping 5.5 pounds

(88 ounces) by its lonesome and

with no optics, and that is a lot of

weight to be packing around one

handed or even in a holster. Inaddition, the Magnum Hunters

    Using a MTM Case-Gard Front

Rifle Rest provided a near perfect

    rest for evaluating the Magnum

    Hunters accuracy capabilities.

moderate short barrel, at 7 1/2

inches (8 3/4 inches, including the

muzzle brake), makes it a bit easier

to maneuver and lends itself better

for being carried in a holster.

    PERFORMANCE CENTER

    The Magnum Hunter is a

    product of Smith & Wessons

    Performance Center, which means

    the technicians have devoted an

extra degree of attention to the

    details to ensure precision and

    performance, including an advanced

degree of hand-cutting and fitting of

the parts and fine-tuning of the

mechanisms. The result is a firearmthat is a pleasant blend of both

    old-world craftsmanship and the

    advanced precision produced by

    todays modern technological

    advancements.

    A perfect example of these

enhancements can be found in the

trigger mechanism, which I found to

    be both smooth and consistent,

pull after pull. Obviously, like alldouble action revolvers when shot

in a double action manner, the

trigger pull was quite heavy at a

measured average of 9 pounds, 7

ounces. When shot in the more

    traditional hunting and benchrest

style as a single-action firearm, the

pull weight dropped to a very

modest 3 pounds, which I found to

    be much more conducive to

    accurate shot placement.

    RED AND GREEN

I began my live-fire testing first

    with the UTG red-dot/green-dot

sight mounted, and found this com-

    bination produced some impressive

groups. This particular sight is stan-

dard on all S&W Model 629 Mag-

    num Hunter handguns, but that

may or may not be the case in the

    long run. Contractual agreements

    between sight manufacturers and

    With a S&W

    double-action

    revolver, the

    cylinder folds out

    to the left side and

    rotates counter

    clockwise.

The new S&W Model 629 Magnum Hunter (left) shares many of the characteristics of the original Model 29 (right),

but includes many new upgrades to increase proficiency.

    firearms people can change, of

course, but even if that should

happen in the future, it is likely that

    the general characteristics and

    specifications would remain the

    same.

Being able to adjust both thedot color (red or green) and the in-

tensity of the dot by simply turning

the knob located on the left side of

the sight main tube was very con-

venient. I did find the need to screw

    the battery compartment cover and

the turret cover caps down as

    tightly as possible.

    This became blatantly obvious

whenafter Id fired only a fewshotsthe battery cover cap and

battery went flying through the air

as a result of the recoil. Fortunately,

I was able to find the cover and

tightened it and the turret caps

    down securely enough to prevent

them from working loose as well. I

also found that the front slip-on

    lens cover would occasionally be

sent flying through the air, due tothe recoil and muzzle blast.

Perhaps an easy way to ad-

dress that problem would be to

apply a tiny drop of epoxy type glue

or super glue to the union point

between the lens covers and the

body of the sight to prevent this

    unwanted separation.

    SCOPE SIGHTING

While I very much liked using

    the 1x red-dot/green-dot sight and

    found it produced some great

groups at 50 yards, sometimes a bit

    of magnification can be beneficial.

    So after thoroughly running the

    Magnum Hunter through its paces

with the dot sight in place, Iswitched it out for the Bushnell

    3200 Elite 2-6x32mm handgun

scope and returned to my range in

order to fine-tune the crosshairs and

    see what results that combination

    would produce.

I have a variety of different

styles of bench rests I routinely use,

and some of these have been de-

signed to fit specific types offirearms and applications. In this

case however, I chose what seemed

to be an unlikely match for a re-

    volveran MTM Case-Gard Front

    Rifle Restyet, it worked out

    perfectly in this case.

I rested the bottom of the

handgun grip on the rubber paddedrear of the rest, adjusted the front

forks to the proper elevation in

order to align the target. This pro-

vided me a stable, solid method to

judge the full accuracy potential of

    the gun.

    For ammunition, I settled on

two factory loads and one hand-

    load, each pushing 240-grain

bullets. The factory loads werecomprised of Remington cartridges

that had been loaded with semi-

    jacketed hollow-point bullets and

    Federal American Eagle shells

    loaded with jacketed hollow points.

    The handloads were also

    loaded with 240-grain bullets, but

    consisted of Speer jacketed soft

points. All three of these loads

shot amazingly well, producingvery consistent and uniformly

    sized groups. While there were

    some slight differences in where

    the groups impacted the paper,

the group sizes were very close to

    the same.

At 50 yards, there were only a

few groups that exceeded 2 1/2

inches and many groups came in at

    around 1 1/2 inches.

    FINAL THOUGHTS

    Each S&W Model 629 Magnum

Hunter comes with a black pistol

    Normally hidden from

    view, the heavy-duty

    construction of the main

    spring assembly is a sign

    of quality workmanship

    and attention to detail.

    rug soft case attractively adorned

with a gold S&W PerformanceCenter logo.

I also found the distinctive and

    unique finish on the Magnum

Hunter much to my liking. While the

trend today seems to lean heavily in

    the direction of stainless-steel

    firearms with a typical matte

    brushed silver appearance, this isnt

always the best for a hunter trying

to stay concealed and out of thesight of their prey.

    Even though the Magnum

Hunter is 100 percent stainless, the

    bright appearance has been toned

down a bit. Smith & Wesson ac-

    complished this two-tone process

by applying what it calls its black

magic finish to a significant portion

of the barrel and frame, but the

muzzle brake, cylinder, hammer, trigger and barrel panels have been

    ELMER KEITHS INFLUENCE

Many people credit Elmer Keith as the devel-oper and inventor of the .44 Magnum, but thatcredit should be shared with Smith & Wesson andRemington Arms. Keith viewed the .44 Special asthe absolute perfect sidearm, but also believedthe cartridge was being hamstrung due to theammunition manufacturers not being willing toload the cartridge up to take advantage of its fullpotential.

Keiths favorite .44 Special load pushed a big250-grain bullet out the barrel at a whopping1,200 fps, very close to the performance of todays.44 Remington Magnum ammunition. Fordecades, Keith pesteredmanufacturers to elevate the performance of the

.44 Special through hotter factory ammo, but themanufacturers firmly resisted those efforts.Eventually, Smith & Wesson did listen to Keith,

and while S&W wasnt willing to push the .44Special ammunition to the accelerated levelsKeith desired, it did recognize the merits of a morepotent and powerful .44 caliber cartridge. Insteadof souping-up that cartridge, S&W chose todevelop a whole new roundthe .44 RemingtonMagnum.

In order to prevent its new cartridge frombeing shot in a .44 Special chambered firearm, itmade the case 0.115-inches longer than that of the.44 Special. Keith got what he was looking for, butnot in the exact way he had in mind. Theagreement that followed was that Smith &Wesson would produce the firearms and

Remington would manufacture and sell the initialammunition for the new caliber.

    Using the supplied UTG

red-dot/green-dot sight can givethe shooter a real advantage

    when shooting off-hand.

The cartridge case of the .44

    Magnum (right) is 0.115 inches

longer than that of the .44

    Special (left), prohibiting it

from being chambered in a .44

    Special handgun. For the

person looking for a bit less

    recoil, the .44 Special

cartridges can be fired in a .44

    Magnum handgun, like theMagnum Hunter.

left in the typical matte stainless

    finish.

The black magic finish is baked

on, and is very durable and highly

    resistant to scratching and abra-

    potential of reflective glare, while

adding a great deal of character

    and class to the weapon.

    Hunting-style handguns come

and go today, but I believe the S&W

    Magnum Hunter has everything

    many big-bore handgun hunters are

    looking for. The versatility offered

by the integral Picatinny rail opensup a whole world of sight possibili-

ties; the grip style and muzzle brake

    help to eliminate a significant

portion of the abusive big bore

    recoil; the .44 Remington Magnum-

    revolver hunting rounds available

    Shooting at relatively short

    range, these six rounds

Today, Mossberg is in a wholenew season of production. The

    still steaming when it arrives.

If the target is small enough to

live in the ground, the 5.56 NATO

may be perfect at a distance. If the

target is much larger, or has a threatpotential, I prefer to depend on a

proven stopper that can do the job

well, as far as I can reliably hit. For

this I usually choose something like

the 7.62 NATO. The 7.62s loss in ve-

locity by using an 18.5-inch barrel

should not be significant enough to

    effectively reduce its long distance

performance as far as I can hit.

The Predator arrived with itsmedium bull barrel completed by

    an 11-degree tapered target muzzle

crown, and the barrels exterior was

covered with 6 inches of attractive,

    weight-reducing, enhanced-cooling

fluting, starting about an inch be-

    hind the muzzle.

    As mentioned previously, the

barrel is not the only metal part ex-

hibiting flutingthe bolt body haseye-catching spiral fluting. Bolt

    bodies are blackened after fluting,

and then the outside diameter is

    polished, leaving the flutes black-

ened. While not too effective in re-

ducing the rifles weight, the flutesdo provide a place for grit and grime

to collect rather than the bolts sur-

face, which along with the lesser

contact area between the bolt and

    receiver, reduces bolt friction.

The stock used on the 7.62

MVP Predator is a sporter wooden

laminate. A gray with black hue, the

stock was well fitted, with stippling

in the grip and forend panels and athick, effective butt pad.

    While Mossbergs patented

    Lightning Bolt-Action trigger (LBA)

system is similar to systems used

by others, it is an effective rendition.

The basis for the LBA is familiar to

    most handgunnersprotruding

This is what I call cheating for well-

    used eyes.

    Next, I slipped the Mossberg

MVP into a Caldwell Lead Sled.

When a rifle is bolted into one of

these, it stays rock steady, allowingthe shooter to concentrate on mov-

ing the trigger finger, eliminating is-

    sues with twitching.

    The results were gratifying.

Thanks to all my cheatinger, tilt-

    ing the scalesand to the

    Mossberg LBA trigger, groups were

excellent. The average of all groups

was 0.88 inches, with the average

of the best groups for each loadbeing 0.76 inches.

    A little load development or

    shooting different loads should

    surpass these groups. Perhaps

    shooting the same loads again

on a calmer day could produce

    better results, given the winds

and gust plaguing us for severalmonths. Several times the

    Desert Tactical Munitions load

would drop three rounds into a

group around 0.5 inches, only to

have the wind pick up and move

the final two rounds out of the

    group.

    With all the testing com-

pleted, I tacked a cardboard sil-

houette target on the 200-yardbackboard and slipped a Versa-

Pod bipod on the front sling

swivel. I rolled out a shooting

    mat from Dillon Precision and

    got down behind the Mossberg

to see just how we could do at

that distance. The best I got

    from several groups fired while

prone was 2.21 inches, with the

worst 2.7 inches. While not quiteas impressive as at 100 yards,

    the Lead Sled does improve

things a lotand that wind just

would not give me a break.

Given a calm day, I have no

doubt I could cut those groups

    down significantly.

Who needs a MossbergMVP Predator 7.62 NATO? With

the power of the 7.62 NATO, the

    extended range accuracy it of-

fers, and the compactness of a

    shorter barrel (whose accuracy

sort of negates the need for

longer tubes), I would have to

say it would be great for hunters

who live in an area where a re-

those who need to knowwas de-

veloped by the Soviet Union in the

early 1970s as a replacement for the

AKM, itself an updated version ofthe original AK-47 assault rifle. De-

    veloped by Mikhail Kalashnikov, the

AK-74 assault rifle was unveiled to

the world in the late 1970s in the

    Soviet War in Afghanistan.

    The AK-74 differs from the

AKM in several ways, most notably

the barrel, bolt head, and maga-

zines, which serve the smaller car-

tridge. However, the AK-74 andAKM share an approximate 50-

    percent parts commonality, such

    as pins, springs and screws.

    The AK-74s action upon firing

is identical to the AKM. Expanding

    powder gases are diverted through

a hole in the barrel to the gas tube.

The gases drive the long-stroke gas

piston (which is part of the bolt car-rier assembly) rearward. The bolt

rotates about 35 degrees and un-

locks, and while being driven to the

rear, the fired cartridge is extracted

    and ejected.

There is no gas valve, so excess

gases are vented at the end of the

gas tube by a series of radial cuts.

    The long recoil spring assembly

compresses and subsequentlymoves forward at the end of its

range, picking up a fresh cartridge

The M74 strips quickly and easily into its basic parts.

into the chamber. The AK-74 has no

    primary extraction, so the extractor

is bigger and stronger than the one

on the AKM and the M4 rifle. Unlike

the M4, the AK-74 was designed for

    steel-cased cartridges.

    The barrel has a hard-chrome

bore and chamber with a 1:8-inch,

right-hand twist. It also sports the

    distinctive AK-74 muzzle brake,

    which features a large expansion

    chamber, two symmetrical vertical

cuts at the forward end of the brake

and three vent holes positioned to

    prevent muzzle climb and lateral

shift to the right (for right-handed

shooters). A flat plate near the end

of the brake produces a forward

    thrust when emerging exhaust

    gases strike its surface, theoreti-

cally eliminating nearly all felt re-

    coil, especially on full-auto.

    trajectory of the 5.45 x 39 car-

    sonally set my AK-74 (and

AK-47) sights to hit about 1-inchhigh at 50 yards. That setting is

also dead-on at 100 yards, using

    a six-oclock hold. Once set,

Some of the best hunting and shootingdiscussions I have been involved in haveoriginated in the smoke around a hunting

campfire. And possibly no topic is morefrequently debated, nor more controversial, than the question of what constitutes a goodhunting bullet. Some hunters feel that theirbullets should expand quickly to provide amaximum amount of tissue damage and neverexit the animal, and others put a higher priorityon deep penetration and don't worry much if

their bullets leave the body of the animal or not.

    The best possible scenario

would be for a bullet to maintain a

high degree of energy, expand well,

but retain a considerable amount of

its original weight and be capable of

penetrating to reach the vital organs

    of the animal. Unfortunately, hunt-

ing conditions are rarely ideal, and

no two game animals are the same.

For example, if you are luckyenough to face an absolutely per-

fect broadside shot on an unsus-

pecting whitetail at 50 or 100 yards

and you are able to slip your bullet

cleanly just behind the front shoul-

der where the bullet expands and

distributes all of its energy directly

inside the heart and lungs area, just

    about any thin-skinned bargain-

basket bullet would likely produceacceptable results.

On the other hand, if you are

facing a shot at a bull elk that re-

fuses to provide you anything close

to a perfect shot while it traverses

    diagonally from your position and

on a hillside three or four hundred

yards away, your bullet will face a

    much greater challenge. In this

case, the bullet may have to trans-

verse through an obstacle course ofmuscle, bone and sinew before it

    reaches its intended goal.

If the bullet should come apart

    before reaching its destination, you

may soon be perusing the meat

counter of your local grocery store

    for your supper.

But your quarry doesn't have to

be the size of a massive bull elk for

your bullet to face substantialchallenges to its performance. Even

    TODAYS HUNTER

    TABORS TOP CHOICES

My own list for the best lead-core bonded bullets would consistof the Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame, Speer Bear Claw, and theNorma Oryx. Over the years, I havekilled a great deal of big game withthese bullets and have never onceregretted their use.

In many cases, these have beenthoroughly put to the test under thetoughest and most extreme of hunt-ing conditions and in every instance

have performed admirably. But good quality hunting bullets

are not necessarily restricted tolead-core bullets. The solid copperand solid copper alloy bullets canalso be a great choice and essen-tially eliminates the worries associ-ated with core separation.

In this case, my personal favoritewould have to be the Barnes Triple-Shock X or the Tipped Triple-ShockX Bullets, which have become a verypopular choice in recent years foruse here in the U.S., as well as onsafari in Africa. Obviously, there areother great hunting bullets out there,

but those above are clearly my ownpersonal favorites.

Using his .308 Norma Mag.-chambered custom rifle built on a Husqvarna/Mauser action, Tabor took this fine red hartebeest bull with

a handloaded 180-grain Nosler Partition bullet. The bullet exited after penetrating both lungs.

bullet that is up to the task, that

    once-in-a-lifetime buck could van-

    from your muzzle.

    BULLET FRAGMENTATION

A few years back I conducted

some extensive testing on bullet de-

flection in order to determine how

large of a problem this really was for

hunters. Much of this testing is done

using gelatin, but since I didnt have

any on hand, I instead constructed a

bullet trap consisting of a woodenstructure containing old magazines

(no issues of Gun World were

harmed in this exercise) standing on

    edge and back to back.

I noticed that many of the more

    poorly constructed bullets lost their

jackets, either as a direct result of

impacting the wood or when they

    made contact with the magazines.

When I separated the pages of themagazines to recover the bullets, I

    noticed two things.

    First, the bullets experienced

    minimal penetration and, at the

point the jackets were shed, all for-

    ward movement was halted. In

addition, at that same point, the

    lead core material was transformed

    into what a coarsely ground

    graphite-like substance.

    Obviously, animals are not

made of wood or magazine pages,

and Id like to do testing in gelatin to

    confirm my suspicions. However, I

    believe these same bullets would

The Nosler Accu-Bond is a good example of a

well performing hunting bullet. In this case,

the bullet was retrieved from an African eland

weighing close to a ton, shot at 100 yards

through the lungs from a .375 H&H Magnum

rifle. This bullet retained 170 grains of its

    original 260-grain weight and mushroomed

perfectly after penetrating several feet of

    bone and muzzle tissue.

Shown here are a few fine examples of top-notch performance from a variety of hunting bullets producing actual animal kills. (L-R):

    1) .308 Norma Mag. 180-grain Norma Oryx bullet retrieved from a mule deer at an estimated 350 yards with a shot through the lungs

(94.4 percent retained weight). 2) .300 Winchester Magnum 180-grain Nosler Partition bullet retrieved from a South African blue

wildebeest from a shot through the shoulder at estimated 200 yards (60 percent retained weight). 3) 7mm WSM 150-grain Federal

Fusion bullet retrieved from a mule deer shot at 135 yards through the spine (73 percent retained weight). 4) 7mm Remington Magnum

160-grain Nosler Partition bullet retrieved from a whitetail buck with a facing shot through the heart at an estimated 100 yards (50.75

    percent retained weight).

have produced a great deal of

    surface tissue annihilation in a

hunting scenario, but if that situa-

tion had called for more than a

couple of inches of penetration, the

bullets may not rendered the quick

and humane kill that the hunter

    would be looking for.

If youre interested in the ef-

fects of bullet deflection, I devoteda full chapter to this topic in my

book, Shooters Bible Guide to the

    Hunting Rifle and its Ammunition,

    from Skyhorse Publishing.

    THE WAY I SEE IT

So, what type of bullet is

best? Only you can answer that

question, but for me, if I err, I pre-

fer that error to be on the side ofdeeper penetration, even if my

bullet should exit the animal. In

    my five-plus decades as a hunter, I

    have taken many shots where

deep penetration was the only op-

tion available to me, and in those

cases, if I had been using a high-

    fragmenting style of bullet, my

success could have been in severe

    jeopardy.

    Please understand, I am not

promoting the use of solids or full

    metal-jacketed bullets for the vast

majority of hunting situations, but I

do believe the ability of a bullet topenetrate deep is one of the most

    important criteria to humane

    hunting practices.

But even when a bullet has

    been designed to hold together

and penetrate deep, there will be

times when it may still be inca-

pable of exiting the animal. The

reasons for this are varied and

many, but sometimes it simply hasto do with the elasticity of the ani-

    mals hide. My neighborwho

    happens to be a professional

    hunting guide with decades of

deer, antelope and elk hunting ex-

    periencetold me an interesting

    story once.

He was guiding an elk hunter

when the two became separated by

a few hundred yards. They were stillin visual contact when the hunter

brought his gun up and fired at a

nice bull. The shot was good, im-

pacting the elk just behind the front

shoulder. Because of the angle at

which my neighbor was to the ac-

tion, it provided him a very unique

    TODAYS HUNTER

One of Tabors favorite hunting bullets is the Barnes Triple-Shock X. These three re-

trieved 570-grain .50-caliber bullets resulted in two Asian water buffalo kills in Australia

from his .500 Jeffrey chambered custom rifle. When recovered, all three bullets were

found to have retained close of 100 percent of their original weight.

Shown here is a classic example of a bullet

having been stopped by the elasticity of

the hide. In this case, Tabors .375 H&H

    drove this 260-grain Nosler Accu-Bond

Bullet all the way through the body of an

African eland to settle just under the skin

on the far side of the shoulder.

prospective of the events as they

    unfolded.

    Watching through binoculars,

he saw the bullet impact the

animal, then nearly exit out the far

shoulder. He saw the bullet push

the hide out what seemed to be afull foot on the far side in the at-

tempt to exit before the skin

snapped back into place. Later, the

    bullet was recovered lying just

under the skin on what would have

the exiting side. The bullet had

    mushroomed perfectly and pene-

    trated considerable bone and
