2. PIR Installation
2.1 Location Positioning – The PIRs should be sited to give full coverage of the bridge operational areas normally occupied by the Navigating Officers carrying out their normal duties – typically 2.3m high. Care should be taken when selecting positions – where possible avoid installing: - Above heaters Directly over or in line with air conditioning vents (punkas…etc). Direct sunlight If the bridge wing areas are to be monitored (Owner’s preference), external IP65 PIRs should be used for the open air type. For Owners requiring the highest safety standard especially for tankers, gas carriers…etc, hazardous area PIRs should be used in conjunction with a zener barrier. Where the bridge wings are covered, directional PIRs should be used to cover these areas. To ensure full coverage, with no blind spots, 360O PIRs should be used at a central position. These all round detectors should also be used where the chart table area has black-out curtains.
2.2 Directional PIRs
Reference: APPENDIX A – Schematics & Drawings: - Drawing Title: DWG007 Directional PIR Drawing Title: DWG007.1 Directional PIR – Dimensions Drawing Title: DWG007.2 Directional PIR - Wiring Please refer to manufacturer’s literature. The directional PIRs should be fitted, where possible, to the overhead deck-head panels at suitable positions to face inwards to the bridge operational area (internal bridge wing areas should not be overlooked). Remove the detector’s front cover as per manufacturer’s data sheet. Ascertain were cable entry will be and remove the most appropriate round “knock-out” piece in the rear of the detector or drill a suitably sized hole. With the detector in position feed the cable through the “knock-out” hole. Carefully strip the cable and attach bootlace ferrules to each wire. Attach the wires to the appropriate terminals according to the wiring schematic. Leave the front cover off till the “walk-test” has been carried out – during commissioning & setup. Carry-out the commissioning procedures outlined at the end of these guidelines. After commissioning carefully re-attach the front cover.

3. HMI Touch Screen Display Reference: APPENDIX A – Schematics & Drawings: - Drawing Title: DWG005 HMI User Display Drawing Title: DWG005.1 HMI User Display – Dimensions Drawing Title: DWG005.2 HMI User Display - Wiring Please refer to manufacturer’s literature.
3.1 Location The Human Machine Interface (HMI) touch screen User Display should be fitted, where possible, in a position where it can be clearly seen form the normal bridge operational positions. The display can be fitted as: -
Panel mount (flush mounted into existing Navigation equipment consoles) or Surface mount (desktop enclosure)
The display is connected to the main control console by an RS422 Cat5 ethernet data cable. The display requires a 24V DC supply, usually from the main control panel, or from a local supply if preferred.
3.2 Panel Mount Provided there is sufficient space, the HMI User Display ideally should be installed in the main navigation console – the display measures 201mm x 152mm x 67mm requiring a cut-out of 179mm x 129mm. The HMI User Display is secured from the rear using the screwed adjustable fixings supplied. Insert the 25 way connector into the socket at the bottom of the display and tighten the securing thumbs screws. Connect the 24V DC supply to the terminals using bootlace ferrules and ensure the cables are well supported.
3.3 Surface Mount In installations where there is insufficient room on the main nav console a position should be selected where the HMI User Display can be surface mounted and still be clearly visible from the normal operational positions. The unit is supplied in an enclosure with an adjustable mounting bracket.

4.1 Location
The main control panel should be situated in a suitable location that allows easy access for installation, commissioning and servicing ideally on the bridge, however if there is no space available then it can be situated in an electrical locker, cable space, storage locker…etc as once switched on all the user operations are performed through the HMI User Display unit.
The panel can be installed inside existing control panels provided there is sufficient space – the Main Control Panel being 300mm x 300mm x 120mm, please allow for the hinged door. The panel is to be bulkhead mounted using the securing kit provided and be at least 100mm up from the deck (to allow for bottom entry cables). Mark the position and secure the control panel using suitable self tapping screws.
The panel is fitted with a ventilation fan so please allow at least 100mm clearance on both sides to allow for adequate air flow (the unit develops very little heat, so overheating should not be a problem). External equipment connections are brought into and out of the Main Control Panel via the cable glands located on the underside gland plate. Equipment connections are made to the various terminal rails, as per the drawings, using bootlace ferrules. Carry-out the commissioning procedures outlined at the end of these guidelines.

10.2 GPS
If required the BNWAS automatic Active selection can be controlled by the ship’s speed, using the $GPVTGxxxx sentence from the GPS. Once the ship exceeds 3kts the BNWAS is set to Active irrespective of heading control. To enable this function: - Select a suitable point to connect to the GPS data output i.e. NMEA buffer/distributor…etc. Set the NMEA Interface PCB switch SW-1 as follows: - Use $GPVTGxxxx3.0*: set SW1-1 Off Ignore $GPVTGxxxx3.0* : set SW1-1 On Carry-out the commissioning procedures outlined at the end of these guidelines.

10.3 Reset from Other Bridge Equipment Ascertain, from documentation scrutiny, whether the bridge navigational equipment is capable of generating a reset signal when the nav equipment is adjusted. Connect to the output relay that generates a closing signal when the equipment is adjusted. Carry-out the commissioning procedures outlined at the end of these guidelines.
10.4 Unacknowledged Navigation Alarm Transfer Ascertain, through testing or documentation scrutiny, which of the navigational equipment is capable of generating a fault condition alarm i.e. heading control – off track alarm, GPS alarm…etc. The NMEA interface pcb accepts $__ALRxxxx* sentences from the autopilot and GPS through the connection described above. Other equipment should be connected as per the wiring schematics and drawings. The system will accept alarm signals in either 4-30V DC or $__ALRxxxx* format. Set the NMEA Interface PCB switch SW1 as follows: - Alarm I/P 1 4-30V DC : set SW1-3 On $__ALRxxxx* : set SW1-3 Off Alarm I/P 2 4-30V DC : set SW1-4 On $__ALRxxxx* : set SW1-4 Off For connections to additional nav equipment an expansion board is available. Carry-out the commissioning procedures outlined at the end of these guidelines.
10.5 Mains Failure Output to Central Alarm System The BNWAS can connect to the ship’s central alarm system or bridge alarm system. Ascertain which format of signal is required i.e. N/O or N/C. Carry-out the commissioning procedures outlined at the end of these guidelines.

GUARDIAN APPENDIXB
ReservePowerRequirements
During normal operations the BNWAS is powered from the ship’s mains supply (86 – 265V AC 50/60Hz). In the event of a mains failure the BNWAS reverts to reserve power with no interruption of operations. Reserve power is derived from the ship’s 24V DC emergency supply. To ensure the ship’s emergency supply batteries have sufficient spare capacity please refer to the table below for typical power consumption values.
POWER CONSUMPTION TABLE

GUARDIAN To meet the required 6 hour duration on reserve power: - In this example, from the measured values, it can be seen that the total peak current consumption = 1.358Amps. Therefore the minimum reserve capacity of the emergency batteries must be: - 6 X 1.358 = 8.148AHC ((before the appropriate adjustment to allow for capacity loss over the battery lifetime).
