Hello.Happy springtime to all you broken bunch of chocolate eggs. We thought it would be good to start this month’s booklet with a beautiful poem espousing the rejuvenative qualities of this wonderful time of year; a time of leaping lambs, questionable reincarnations and the blossoming of the modest daffodil. It’s a time of year that fills us with hope, makes us feel that a future, pregnant with possibilities, stretches out ahead of us all...So I did what all great journalists do these days and typed “poems about spring” into askjeeves.com and this is what came up…

Licking a bamboo leaf’sspring rain...mouse

Not exactly what I had in mind but you get the idea, new beginnings, slightly better weather and mice.

It’s been a long hard winter, a winter that followed the splattered footsteps of a soggy socked summer, but fear not fellow bastions of good times, spring is on it’s way and our cavalcade of nightly happenings are goose-stepping their way to your manically depressed cake hole surrounds like a panini full of prescription drugs. So sit your hollow, cacao, oval shaped bodies down and let Gwdihŵ pour some delicious sugary yoke into your thirsty insides.

WEEKENDS IN GWDIHŴSATURDAYSMy Mamgu always used to say to me when I refused to partake in a game of musical statues

“Dancing can be magical and transforming. It can breathe new life into a tired soul; unleash locked-away creativity; inspire new romances; and turn sadness into joy, so dance you little sh1t”

And she was right. But if all this happens only during the dance, better make sure we don’t stop dancing and the best place for it is on a Saturday night in Gwdihŵ. So there’s your Saturdays sorted then, whatever it is you’re after we have it here at Gwdihŵ, Mamgu would be very pleased indeed...

JUJU NATIONSOur regular head honchos in the old foot shuffling game of dancefloor chess are the best meat movers in Cardiff. Specializing in bringing you polyrhythmic afrobeat groovers dusted with funk and covered in neck jerking reggae. This month......

HULLY GULLYThe Hully Gully DJ’s Veto and Double Cee are Glamorgan’s hip hop dons. They return this month with Bristol’s veteran dancefloor

destroyer Mr Soulsbury. Expect nose itching big beat bass all night long.

FAT CITYFat City’s globe trotting turntable tendencies never fail to get feet shuffling. Their eclectic nights bring in guest DJ’s and bands, and specialize in the best new grooves and classic dusty floor fillers. This month.....

FRIDAYSFridays are the new Fridays ladies and gentlemen. Start your weekend by attaching Gwdihŵ’s gentle, latex-tipped jump leads to your weekday weary batteries and forget about sleep until Sunday.

SURE SHOTWith a rotating roster of guest DJ’s resembling a crisp, buttery rotisserie of dance, Sure Shot is a brand new night taking you to the roots of room moving music. Think of it as Dance Music 101, our special guest DJ’s will spin you the psych, funk, soul and disco gems that either feature in or inspired much of themusic we treasure today.

THIS THAT & THE THIRDFirst thing worth a mention is This That & The Third, home to two of Cardiff’s finest turntablists DJ Jaffa and Paul B, these guys have been honing their chirps and sharpening their crabs for years now. It’s safe to say that they’re the Godfather’s of Cardiff’s underground hip hop and dance scene so who better to showcase all the latest and best tunes from the artists residing on the fair streets of our capital. There will be plenty of guest DJ’s and the occasional live act too, an essential night for all you hip hop heads. This month....

DEVIL’S GUNThird Fridays of every month are home to Devils Gun. At the wheels of steel will be DJ VETO, so you can expect the usual disco ball full of funk, funk, funk, funk and some disco.

This month they have The Ginger Rogers playing, smooth as butter female fox purred over hard funk and some badass boogie.

BRINGING THE BEST IN NEW MUSIC TO CARDIFFHUW STEPHENS, SPILLERS AND MMP CURATE THE FIRST JUXTAPOSED FESTIVAL

Huw Stephens has been a national discoverer of new music since the ripe young age of 17 when he started his career on Radio 1 session in Wales.

His velvety Cardiff drawl is now heard all over the UK’s premiere music station and he continues to break great new bands to this day and is considered one of the UK’s main tastemakers.

Another local establishment famed for their delectable taste are Spillers Records. Founded in 1894 (before recorded music even existed!) they have sold numerous amounts of records to countless punters searching for the newest sounds. It’s nigh on impossible to enter the place without leaving with a brand new album by a band you’ve never heard of.

Unlike these two old-timers the MMP is a fairly new fixture to Cardiff’s vibrant music scene but a vital one none-the-less. Their monthly online publication previews and reviews local albums, gigs and artists and is becoming an essential read for anyone interested having their ‘finger’ on the ‘pulse’. www.themmp.tv

So, we here at Gwdihw thought it would be a great idea to get these three experts together and ask them to curate one of our famed micro festivals, and they have done what can only be described as a totally rad amazeballs job. Taking place on the 31st of March and for the princely sum of £6 if you plan ahead (it’s £8 on the door so get your scout hat on) this all-dayer is going to be an essential addition to your diaries.

Page 8: Gwdihw Listings April 2013

Gracing the stage on this fine day will be Bones of St James who we think sound like a young Jagger fronting a skiffle group, the scuzzed out stomp of Heavy Petting Zoo, and Howl, the Barry two-piece quickly making a name for themselves as everyone’s new favourite band.

Inside will be Fist Of The First Man, whose live shows are not to be missed, sound like a fuzzed out Gabor Szabo soundtracking an 80’s unreleased Arnie film and South Wales’s finest beat combo The Keys, will also be stepping up to the plate to bring you a giant bag of sugared ear worms.

Kicking off the main stage, Amateur Best recently released his debut record to much critical hoo ha and acclaim. The album’s a heartfelt collection of sometimes painful always beautiful pop songs and live it’s likely to make you laugh and cry, probably at the same time.

Newport’s The Vestals make big Cure-sie sounding pop songs and are another band hotly tipped for big things this year.

Coves are a two piece from Cross Keyes who deal in dreamy/dirgy blissed out synth pop.

Following them will be the tectonic shifting Night Engine whose tracks chug along like neon steam train with ‘Let’s Dance’ era Bowie at the helm, all rolled up jacket sleeves and high heels.

Headlining this delectable selection of live morsels are We Are Animal, fresh from a

January tour supporting The Joy Formidable and a Fabruary packed full of European dates this is an opportunity to catch this band on the crest of a giant mirrored wave before they return to Cardiff in September to play the Motor Point Arena (probably).

Bands, beer, BBQ - What more could you ask for on a bank holiday? Oh, maybe some sunshine. We’ll see what we can do.

Last Tuesday I was lucky enough to attend Gwdihw’s (Cardiff) second cigar & rum night Cuba Calling. The venue was packed out. From the onset it looked promising (at a more than reasonable £10 for two drink vouchers and tasty ribs & roasties). I was a little unsure what to expect from Cuban food although it sounded very exciting.

On arrival at the venue the mood was relaxed and welcoming, the sensual rhymic Cuban music complimented the food well, adding a relaxed vibe to the evening. It was evident by the buzzing and engaged conversation around me that everyone was enjoying themselves. Excited at the prospect of a rum based cocktail I headed for the bar. The barman was already in the swing of things, mixing cocktails to the beat.

I chose a ‘Culto a Lavida’ and my sister the ‘El Presidente’. Around me the hazy smoke of aromatic cigars floated into the night sky, as the cigar rollers advised on the ‘ complex and thankless’ task of smoking a cigar.

It turns out that Cuban food is a fusion of many cultures: ‘Cuban cuisine is a fusion of Spanish, African, and Caribbean cuisine. Cuban recipes share spices and techniques with Spanish and African cooking, with some Caribbean influence in spice and flavor’. - Wikipedia.

The tarte cranberry juice in my cocktail brought an edge to the smooth South American Havana 7 rum and accentuated the sticky sweet succulent barbeque ribs I indulged in (there was a choice between BBQ and dry). The meat fell off the bone, the sauce was rich chocolately brown and there were hints of muscovado sugar and citrus. I finished the lot, not without making a mess however! The ribs were positively finger lickingly good – this was very much food for the soul.

As for the potatoes – The soft fluffy insides of the baby roasties that accompanied were gently nested in their crispy well seasoned jackets, the flavour bursting out through each bite. The portions were more than generous – although I cheekily went back for more.

This would be great place to go as a couple and equally welcoming enough to go on your own or with friends. I was served at all times with a smile and even lucky enough to receive attentive table service. I left for the evening, my once hungry stomach comforted by feel-good food. I would highly recommend this evening and urge you not to miss out on a very popular event. Your stomach needs it!

“I just wanted to send a big THANKYOU for the party on Saturday night - Gwdihŵ was the perfect venue for our party, and the marquee was great.

I will definitely recommend you as a venue, AND you served Ginger Joe’s to perfectly complement Jamie’s Ginger Movember! We had a great time. I am STILL seeing people who said they had a great night. One group said their faces hurt the next morning from laughing so much. Thanks again!”
