THE LUVERT FAMILY GROUNDBREAKING!

Kenya is excited and grateful.

On May, 10th S/E Habitat for Humanity held the groundbreaking ceremony for our 52nd house, which will be home for Kenya Luvert and her daughter, Jeyla. Kenya’s house will be located in the Thurston area of Springfield and is the ninth house built in our Meyer Estates development. About 35 people joined the Luvert family for the special ceremony. The group enjoyed the Habitat neighborhood, the nice weather and the friends that shared the day. Mayor Christine Lundberg and Councilor Marilee Woodrow

spoke at the ceremony and welcomed Kenya and Jeyla to the community. After sponsoring four A Brush With Kindness projects in 2013, Ninkasi Brewing Co. stepped up to be the major sponsor for Kenya’s house. Ninkasi partnered with Chambers Construction to raise funds for the build. We are delighted that the partnership is growing. Thanks to these generous companies and the City of Springfield HOME grant, Kenya will be in her own home in time for Christmas!

The future home of Albert Millard, our fourth build on

Yogi Way in Eugene, is beginning to look like a house!

The house is coming along nicely thanks to the

fantastic support from our volunteer nail-pounders

and the sponsorship of Thrivent Financial Services, the

Eugene Mennonite Church and the Central Lutheran

Foundation.

Volunteers have come from local Lutheran congregations and Seneca Lumber Company,

Kalapuya High School, Symantec, US Navy recruiters, U of O, Lane County Assessor’s

Office, Levi Strauss, and Summit Bank. Everyone has done a wonderful job while having

fun building Albert’s new home. Within the next couple of weeks the roof will be

completely framed, the exterior doors and windows will be in place, and most of the

siding will be installed. This house will also be an “Energy Star Certified Home,” which

will not only enhance its value but will consume a third to a half of the normal

consumption of water and electricity, thus lowering Albert’s monthly utility bills.

Getting Started!

H A B I T A T I O N S SUMMER 2014 2

When things are very busy, I often worry how everything will get

accomplished. I also notice that I feel excited and energized. Right now is one of those times. The Millard house, sponsored by Thrivent Financial Services, local Lutheran churches and the Eugene Mennonite Church is moving along really well. We’re just getting started on house #9 in Meyer Estates sponsored by Ninkasi Brewing Co., with additional support from Chambers Construction, and City of Springfield HOME grant funds. Summer is a busy time at the ReStore and sales are climbing. Our A Brush With Kindness home repair program is continuing to grow. We’re lining up to start building the infrastructure on our

newest Springfield property on R Street using Meyer Memorial Trust and City of Springfield HOME grant funds. And we’re in transition as the volunteer terms expire for our great AmeriCorps Members, Charles Castle (4 years) and John Webster (2 years). So, a lot of activity, but also a lot of excitement and potential. It takes vision and perseverance to overcome the persistent nature of a community’s housing problems. Whether we’re faced with substandard conditions, overcrowding, unsafe structures, lack of affordable housing, or the results of a down economy, the impact on people of all ages, gender and backgrounds is real and present. At S/E Habitat, we believe that if we

nurture and foster determined, long-term commitments with volunteers and donors, we become catalysts in improving local housing conditions and, therefore, reshaping our community. I invite you to become a catalytic partner in our mission at Springfield/Eugene Habitat to improve the quality of life for the whole community by serving those in need of basic, decent, and affordable housing.

On May 3rd, we participated in Habitat’s National Women Build sponsored by Lowe’s Home Improvement. Nearly 35 women, including 28 volunteers and 6 Lowe’s employees joined Springfield Mayor Christine Lundberg and comic strip author, Jan Eliot (of nationally-syndicated Stone Soup) to work on Albert’s house. It was wonderful to watch so many volunteers in their special red Women Build shirts working on the build site. Enthusiasm was high as the volunteers learned new skills and how to use power tools. The sun came out in the afternoon, accompanied by big smiles, when the men from Bethesda Lutheran church delivered a special lunch. It was exciting to join with 300 affiliates across the country, all hosting this special build day. As the response was so overwhelming, we are planning another Women Build Day this summer, sponsored by our affiliate. Be sure to watch our website for more information in the coming weeks.

Thinking remodel? Think ReStore! For those who read this column in every newsletter, that might sound like a broken record. The truth is, we hear the comment: “I wish I had come to your store first!” several times a week. Whether you are considering a major remodel or a small weekend project, be sure to consult with us before you start. Often, we can save you money, time – and headaches! Below are a few of the items we currently have in stock:

250 boxes of tile Over 100 doors 50 windows 125 light fixtures Cabinets Carpet pad Insulation Floor Joists Over 70 sinks

The list could go on and on, but you get the idea! Keep in mind that every product we sell comes with a 30 day

money back guarantee. So buy with confidence! We stand behind what we sell and will do everything in our power to make those home improvement projects go smoothly. Is your project already underway or recently completed? Consider donating items you no longer need or want to the ReStore. We would love to have leftover new or good used materials. We accept donations any time the ReStore is open (10am to 6pm, Tuesday thru Saturday). If you have larger items give us a call at (541) 344-4809. We are happy to come out with our truck and pick them up. We are always looking for ways to get information about the ReStore out to the community. Do you have a neighborhood picnic where we could set up an information booth? An association meeting that would schedule a program so your members can learn more about how the ReStore helps Habitat build houses in our community? Or perhaps include an article in your association’s newsletter? Just give the store a call at (541) 344-4809 if you have an idea – we’d love your help! So when you think ReStore, think: shop, donate and advocate! To all of our loyal donors, and customers, THANK YOU, we are building more houses because of you!

Our AmeriCorps Member, John Webster, joined nearly 150 other AmeriCorps volunteers in Des Moines, Iowa in May, helping complete 18 Home Repair projects and frame two houses. The event was part of the 2014 AmeriCorps Build-A-Thon. The annual event brings Habitat AmeriCorps members, AmeriCorps alums and community volunteers, families and partners together for week-long blitz builds. Build-a-Thon events are held in partnership with local communities and Habitat affiliates to help meet the host community’s affordable housing needs

while celebrating the service and impact of AmeriCorps members. This year the event was in three locations, Des Moines, Iowa, Wake County, N.C. and Wild Rivers, WI. Interested in serving as an AmeriCorps member and participating in events like this? Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity is currently looking for two qualified candidates to fill our AmeriCorps positions for next year! Contact Kris Redmond at [email protected] or call (541) 741-1707 for more information.

Time to celebrate! Thanks to our wonderful supporters, the 2014 Benefit Breakfast was a record-breaking success! For the third year in a row, we exceeded our goal. Hoping for $50,000, a total of $56,000 was raised that morning!! We are so grateful for the generous individual gifts along with the 35 individuals who became monthly Sustaining Donors, resulting in an additional $1,400 per month in unrestricted donations to S/E Habitat. Our guests were inspired by the powerful stories from David Oaks (A Brush with Kindness home repair project) and the Garcia family, who just paid their FINAL mortgage payment and now fully own their home. Truly, people responded with their hearts and checkbooks, appreciating the impact that Habitat has on families in need. If you would like to attend next year’s event, please contact Jean Stover at [email protected] .

HABITAT HAPPENINGS

Good Karma Mondays! Join us on Monday, August 18 for a night at the ball park as Northwest Community Credit Union partners with the Eugene Emeralds to raise money for S/E Habitat. If you purchase your ticket at the Ems box office that day you can choose the price you pay for your ticket! 50% of what you pay will be donated to Habitat.

Our third annual Pints-for-a-Cause fundraiser was held on Memorial Day, May 26. The mood was festive and the band was lively as former board president, Charley Snellings, and his “blues brothers” played toe-tappin’ tunes to help raise money for

S/E Habitat. Ninkasi donated 25% of all pint sales, raising $287 to help families in need. Thank you to all our supporters!
