Term 3 Issue 1 Week 8 Wednesday 9th September 2020

Dear Parents / Carers The last few months have been challenging for many of us and filled with great uncertainty. The government is gradually lifting restrictions, but when life will return to “normal” is still unclear. It is a particularly challenging time for our Year 6 students who are in their final year of primary school. Following recent Department advice, all excursions are still on hold and it is unclear when travel will be permitted. With this in mind, I want to thank Mrs Pursch and her team for organising an amazing ‘Camp @ School Week’. This week all students in Yrs 5 and 6 are participating in activities that they would normally do whilst on camp, albeit in a different format. From movies, to a beach walk and being able to ask Dr Karl questions live over Zoom, all of these students will benefit greatly from these activities. The ‘Amazing Race’, held on Wednesday will be a highlight of the week I am sure.

For the remainder of Term 3 (and early next term) you will have the opportunity to participate in the Partners in Learning parent survey which is part of the ‘Tell Them From Me’ suite of surveys. The parent survey helps to clarify and strengthen the important relationship between our parents and our school. The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete. Parents with more than one child at the school may choose to complete the survey more than once, if they feel that their children’s experiences differ. Please take the time to complete this survey as we value feedback from our parent community. Your responses will support us as we move into a new planning cycle.

I want to thank all of our families for their help with explaining absences from school. New guidelines for schools mean that any absence from school for illnesses that have flu like symptoms must either have a negative COVID test or a certificate from a doctor stating that a test is not warranted. Children cannot return to class until we have a reason for their absence. Students whose parents are unwilling to have their child tested or have not provided evidence to the school of a negative test result will need to be excluded from school for a period of ten days. Siblings of students who undergo testing are also asked to stay home, even if not unwell, until a negative test result is received. A sibling who is absent for this reason is marked as ‘Flexible’ in our roll marking system which does not count towards absences for the year.

Last week we celebrated School Administrative and Support Staff Recognition Week.  Our SASS play an important role in the school community. They are often the first people you see when you enter a school and are essential to maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and community. SASS work in school offices, in classrooms and libraries and maintain and care for school grounds and buildings. They are often the ones to tend to students when they are unwell and they ensure the efficient management of school financial and administration functions. We are very grateful and deeply appreciative of the role they play in our schools.

Lastly, a reminder about the new arrangements for the pick up or drop off of students within school hours. Parents are asked to contact the Administration Office (6559 3009) when they arrive at the school gate so a member of staff can either collect your child or drop them off to you. Last Wednesday we raised $244.00 in support of The Kids' Cancer Project. Pirate Day is an annual

national day of dressing up to raise awareness and much-needed funds for childhood brain

cancer. Funds raised are allocated to scientific studies to find better treatments and ultimately a

cure for the disease through the Pirate Ship Foundation and The Kids' Cancer Project. Thank you

to all the students and staff who participated on the day and a huge thank you to Linda Cain and

her pirate crew for preparing a feast for all in the Canteen!

Positive Behaviour for Learning over the past two weeks, has seen a focus on 'Respectful relationships with peers', 'Body language'. Students learned how they can have positive relationships with peers and how their words and actions can affect others in the lesson on 'Respectful relationships with peers'. Students are encouraged to treat peers with kindness and respect, use positive words and keep negative opinions to themselves, and model positive relationships.

In Week 7, the PBL focus was on using positive body language. Students learned what body language is, discussed positive non-verbal communication and the impact negative non-verbal communication can have on others. They participated in role play examples of how to show positive and respectful body language when greeting others, listening to speeches and others talking.

This week, classes are learning about bus lines in the afternoons and the expected behaviours when travelling on the bus. Students are encouraged to always show positive behaviour when on the bus, showing respect to the bus driver, peers and community members.

Students should be congratulated on their continued support for Positive Behaviour for Learning at our school. It is pleasing to see most students following expectations consistently.

This year our Book Fair was like no other. Without the joy of parents and grandparents attending during Education Week and the usual business and excitement, we briefly considered not running with the Book Fair at all. But as it turned out, not even a Pandemic could stop our incredible school community from breaking all records! Thanks to your support, we managed to sell $4592 worth of books (and merchandise). What an incredible effort!

So, what does this mean? Firstly, it means our kids are passionate about reading, which is brilliant. Secondly, thanks to Scholastic’s generous commission, it means there are a whole load of new books arriving in our Library to add to our growing collection this year. This will provide opportunities for all students to access quality literature.

A big thanks to all for your trust in the new system and your generosity in helping us spread the love of reading. Thanks also to Di Hatch and Shelly Brown for all their hard work and assistance in running the fair.

Your child can access our ‘Oliver Library’ system, simply by logging in to their student portal at home or school. They can browse through our book collection and reserve a copy of a book they would like to read at any time.

Book week celebrations haven't been forgotten. They have been pushed back to Term 4 Week 2 - Day to be advised. The theme for 2020 is “Curious Creatures, Wild Minds!”

“The fire of literacy is created by the emotional sparks between a child, a book, and the person reading. It isn’t achieved by the book alone, nor by the adult reading aloud – it’s the relationship winding between all three, bringing them together in easy harmony.” -Mem Fox

Hallidays Point Public School showed our appreciation for National Tree Day by giving a TREE a HUG. National Tree Day is a call to action for all Australians to put their hands in the earth and give back to their community. It's a day to venture outdoors and get to know your community, and most importantly, to have fun!
