The staff and students would like to recognise and thank the following businesess for their generous donations towards the Year 6 Farewell on Monday 10 December.

Saxbys Soft Drinks Pty Ltd – all the soft drinks

Paul & Sylvia Donoghue Hallidays Point Tavern – Pizzas and garlic bread

Bruce White President of the Blackhead Surf Life Saving Club – Use of the Blackhead Surf Life Saving Club and its facilities

Kim Cheers and Benjamin Schmitzer – Diamonds on the Drive Café & Takeaway – $100 hot chips

Ishik Cevik – Taree Kebab Shop – Kebab Platters Your continued support and contribution to the success of this annual event is very much appreciated by us all. On Friday the 7

th December 5/6V were very lucky to have

none other than the 2011 Australian national Slam Poet/ hip hop artist Luka Lesson perform and conduct a poetry workshop. The students were inspired by Luka and had the opportunity to compose and perform their very own poem for the class. There were many well written and creative poems composed. Jarrod Hillyer’s poem drew attention and accolades from not only his peers but from Luka Lesson himself. ‘Life’ In Australia life is a gift. But all of our lives are nothing, just school where you learn and teach. Life is just sand slipping, falling, sliding through times fingers, to forever return to the same beach. By Jarrod Hillyer. ‘Wow’ is all I can muster in response to such a thoughtful and thought provoking piece. But the festivities did not cease after the mornings workshop.

Students of 5/6V had the opportunity to create a food dish all of their own and present it at the first inaugural food appreciation show. We had entries that included banana cakes and muffins, chocolate brownies, tuna patties, choc mint cheese cakes, a pizza sized triple choc cookie, vanilla pancakes, chocolate éclairs and more! The students had a ball discussing how they created their dishes and enjoyed sampling and reflecting upon new tastes. Finn Fagerstrom’s tuna patties were a surprising hit amongst many who dared try them, earning him the title of ‘people’s choice’. Levi Steber’s chocolate éclairs did not last long as you could well imagine.

The afternoon saw a good proportion of 5/6V students as well as Hallidays Point children invited to the launch of the Manning Anthology, a wondrous collection of narratives written by the children of the local area. And to think, out of the sixty stories that were chosen, our little school had thirty selected to be published! Amazing! What a way to round off the day, if not the week. Congratulations to all of our students who had their narratives published. Well done to all the students in 5/6V who seized the opportunity when presented to extend themselves and their palettes. I would like to wish all our students and parents a very merry Christmas and a safe holiday. Remember: reading, writing and public speaking can take you many places and open many doors, don’t let an opportunity go begging. Rob Voorby.

Family and friends are welcome to come along to the final performance on Tuesday 18th December and support the finalists from 11:15 am.

A 5/6 FRIDAY OF CULTURE

Recently a survey was conducted in regards to changing the girls uniform and the results have shown that option 1 (skirt & shorts in the current school material) was the most popular.

The girls uniform will now consist of a tunic, skirt and a new style of shorts all made using the current school material.

The new range will be introduced from Term 1, 2013.

I will be taking orders for uniforms now and we will do our best to have them ready before Term 1, 2013 with pick up being available through the holidays. Preference will be given to girls starting Kindergarten next year.

Also the uniform shop is run by volunteers if you can spare half an hour once a month to help out please let me know.

Orders can be placed at the uniform shop or by contacting me.

Join the Summer Reading Club @ your Library

Young people 5 – 16 years are once again invited to join the Summer Reading Club at

their local library.

This free national school holiday program continues to build on the enormous success of previous years, with over 19,000 young readers participating across Australia last year, reading an estimated 150,799 books. Greater Taree City Libraries have been hosting the Summer Reading Club since 2004, and hundreds of local children have taken part – enjoying the opportunity to connect with children right across the country, sharing stories and making friends. The theme for this year: “Untangled Tales” is based on multicultural folk and fairy tales, encouraging young readers to explore traditional stories filled with magic, adventure, humour and suspense. Registration is now open for the Summer Reading Club across Greater Taree City Libraries, with new members receiving a membership card and an information sheet about the club. Young readers who have their card stamped when they borrow from the library can collect a Summer Reading Club activity book after two stamps, and there are a limited number of Untangled Tales Tickets available for an exclusive Summer Reading Club event for those who receive five stamps. The Summer Reading Club also has an interactive website that provides fun and engaging online activities such as online chats, book raves, stories to complete, competitions, recommended reading lists and web links for different age groups and their families. You can find the website at www.summerreadingclub.org.au and club members are encouraged to register online as well. Club members are also encouraged to keep a reading log, aiming to read 10 books over the summer holidays. Those who return their completed reading logs to library branches by 21 January 2013 will receive an invitation to a Summer Reading Club party which will be held in library branches at the end of January. All

members who hand in their completed reading logs automatically go into the draw to win great prizes. Greater Taree City Libraries will also be offering an exciting program of activities through the holidays. A school holiday program is available for download from www.gtcc.nsw.gov.au or pick up a copy from your library. For more information about the Summer Reading Club contact Debbie Horgan at Taree Library on 6592 5298 or email [email protected]
