Bedtime Song – Lyrics

Starlight scattered through the dark,

As we rest our sleepy heads.

Snoozing underneath the stars,

We’ll dream of all they hold.

Dream underneath the stars,

Of dragons, queens and kings.

Dream underneath the stars,

Of swans and lions and twins.

While we dream the stars will shine,

While we dream … the stars will shine.

Teacher Notes: Moon sand: a Lunar Landscape

Ingredients

· 4 cups of play sand

· 2 cups of cornflour

· 1 cup of water

· 2 table spoons of coloured powder paint

· ½ a cup of glitter

N.B. Consider making two different colours of Moon Sand and mixing them together to provide extra interest!

Utensils

Large mixing bowl

Wooden spoon

Cup

Table spoon

Method

1. Mix the sand and cornflour in a large bowl until they are both combined.

2. Slowly add the water, mixing until all the water has been incorporated and the consistency is like breadcrumbs. If it doesn’t hold together when formed in to a ball, then add a small amount of extra water. It should not be wet, but should feel slightly damp.

3. Stir in the powder paint and glitter.

4. Use the moon sand to create a small world lunar landscape.

Suggestions for making a Lunar landscape

1. Find a large tray or Tuff Spot.

2. Line the tray with silver foil.

3. Fill the tray with moon sand.

4. Place large and small rocks over the tray.

5. Scatter shiny pebbles sparingly over the surface.

6. Add a variety of small world space vehicles and astronauts.

Things to collect

Tray, silver foil, rocks, shiny pebbles, small world space vehicles and astronauts, small world tool sets,

Moon Sand – Small World and Sensory Play

Moon sand is given its name because it has a crumbly texture, similar to that on the surface of the moon. Moon sand mimics the properties of wet sand and as such can be moulded when compressed. It is fabulous for practising the skills of: tipping, scooping, pressing, moulding and pouring. It helps with the development of descriptive language through the cultivation of imaginative play.
