Handbook 2018/19
Early Years
The ethos of Leicester Islamic Academy is based on the
principles of Islam through the guidance from the Quran
and Sunnah, to become the ambassadors of Islam.
In this booklet please find important information for your child to be successful in
Early Years.
Our responsibilities
Responsibilities of Children
Islam teaches and encourages everyone to accept personal responsibilities for
my behaviour in order to maintain a safe productive learning environment.
Responsibilities of Staff
The Prophet (s.a.w.) stated:
“Seeking knowledge is an obligation on every Muslim.”
Teachers have a duty to uphold the values and ethos of the school in order to
guide the children and help to avoid the dangers of ignorance and error.
Responsibilities of Parents/Carers
Islam encourages you as parents to teach children Islamic manners and etiquettes
(adab) in accordance with the beautiful example of the Prophet Mohammed who
said:
“Be generous, kind and noble to your children and make their habits
beautiful.”

Please ensure there is always someone available to collect your child from school
if he/she falls ill during school hours. Emergency contact numbers should be
updated within the school office.
Uniform
A uniform is worn in school because it allows children to have a sense of pride,
equality and belonging towards our establishment. All children should wear
correct uniform to school; random uniform checks take place regularly. If your
child is not in correct uniform the following procedure will take place:

Healthy Eating Campaign
Children learn about healthy food, their bodies and exercise; they need a variety of
foods for a well-balanced diet.
As part of LIA’s healthy eating campaign we ask parents to encourage your child in
eating a healthy breakfast as a good night’s sleep followed by food in the morning
helps me stay active and concentrate more.
NO sweets, biscuits, cakes, crisps or chocolate bars are allowed in school.
Friday’s are treat days where they can bring in ONE of the above.
Fizzy drinks are not allowed in school.
All lunchboxes or bags should clearly be marked with your child’s name and class.
Snack Break
Following the health eating policy we provide a selection of fruit, vegetables and other
healthy snacks for children to choose from daily to have with fresh milk at snack time.
For reception ONLY
A charge will need to be paid for the fruit and cookery. The amount you will need to
pay will be given at the beginning of the academic year.
Behaviour
Children follow the five golden rules in order for them to be on their best behaviour.
Respect
Taking Care
Talking and Listening
Enjoy Learning
Keeping Safe
If the school rules are adhered to their will be rewards. Here at LIA good behaviour is
ALWAYS rewarded.
Rewards are:
Star of the Week certificates
House Points
Stars on effort chart
Stickers
Verbal praises
Assembly trophies
All school property must be treated with respect and care. Any school property that is
damaged must be paid for (the value of the object), including text books and reading
books sent home.
LIA has Zero Tolerance for Bullying
Houses
Upon admission to the school your child is assigned to a House.
The Houses are:
As part of the school’s tarbiyah programme on ‘Positive Behaviour’, a system has been
introduced that allows them to earn house points for their individual house groups.
Homework
Nursery
Homework is given occasionally to your child. Homework will be sent in a homework
bag.
Reception
Homework is usually given on Wednesday; it should be handed into school by
Monday. It is important for the child to get family support when doing homework,
particularly help with reading.
Homework diaries should be signed and put in the homework bag.
Doing homework for your child does not help their learning and progress.
Photography
Within the Early Years much of children’s learning is assessed through play. In order
to track your child’s learning and provide evidence we need to take pictures of your
child whilst they work and play.
WOW Walking
Our school is participating in the Walk to School campaign. Children and parents are
encouraged to walk to school or park and stride. Teachers have a tracker to record
how your child came into school.
At the end of each month children receive a badge from Living Streets if they have
achieved the monthly target.
LIA encourages parents not to park outside the school gates as it causes congestion
and is a hazard towards children going into or coming out of school.
Please be considerate of our neighbours and do not park in a disruptive
manner.
Things to remember
Stay & Play
Every Wednesday from 8.30am – 8.50am
PM nursery – 11.30 – 11.50am
Reading book (Reception)
Reading will take place every week. Please help your child to sound out the letters in
their book using the phonetic alphabet.
Show & Tell
Your weekly newsletter will inform you the day and what ‘Show and Tell’ will be based
on that week. Bringing an item into school on any other day will result in
disappointment for your child; this is something we like to avoid.
Learning at home
If you would like to do extra work at home with your child you could:
- Help your child with their phonics. This is the method we use to teach your child
to read and write. If you are unaware of phonics, please contact us and we will
be happy to help.
- Help your child to count and recognise their numbers to 20.
- Support your child in basic skills such as gluing, sticking and using a scissor.
- Help your child learn the Sunnah way of going to the toilet.
“Pray & Play” Madrassah
If you child attends madrassah after school please provide a snack in line with our
health eating policy. Children are given time to eat before lessons will commence.
Pray & Play session provides a stimulating and nurturing session. This allows the
children to experience their learning through play. Children are taught to recognise the
Arabic alphabet in a creative way. Daily duas are taught by practical lessons permitting
the children to easily remember them.
Qaidah’s are provided at the beginning of the school year.
