The Lancaster High School Wind Symphony has a rich tradition of excellence that must be continued through emphasis on the fundamentals of musicianship, performance skills, and teamwork.
Attitude In our Wind Symphony, a positive chemistry among members is vital to our long-term success. Your ability to cooperate in rehearsals and lessons with me and fellow students is being noted at all times.
Responsibility Each member is responsible for his/her own preparation at rehearsals and lessons (or make-ups). These responsibilities include: 1) being on-time, 2) organizing all materials for every rehearsal and lesson, 3) keeping your locker and/or section clean, and 4) demonstrating respect. Successful preparation of concert music, among other things, has a positive effect on the entire ensemble.
Weekly Lessons The weekly lesson is a part of your growth and development in this organization. Lessons are scheduled on a rotating basis. Lessons are an important part of your development as a musician. Individual skills that cannot be addressed during band rehearsals are learned during weekly small-group lessons. When you miss a lesson, you are required to make it up. You can do this a number of ways: 1) Arrange to work with Mr. D during scheduled make-up periods, 2) Arrange for time before or after school, 3) Come down during specially-designated make-up times during Mr. D’s planning periods throughout the week.
Concert Attendance and Expectations Every concert of this ensemble is considered mandatory as a requirement for the course. Any unexcused absence will result in a major reduction in your average. Before, during and after concerts you are to act as a professional. Your attitude and cooperation throughout the evening is an important part of the entire group’s success.
These requirements and expectations will be used in the evaluation of individual students for the purpose of assigning a numerical grade as well as report card comments. Lesson Schedules are posted outside Mr. D’s office.
Uniforms You will be issued a uniform for performances! It is your responsibility to properly maintain this apparel throughout the year and hand-in everything issued to you at the end of the year. The uniform includes a Red Coat, Tuxedo Shirt, Black Cummerbund and Bowtie (boys) or Rosette (girls). You are required to provide/wear: Black Pants, Black Socks/Stockings and Black Shoes.
Equipment You are not a beginner anymore! Proper maintenance of your instrument/equipment is vital to your ability to perform at the highest level possible. At the first lesson of each semester, instruments will be examined to assure that they are in adequate condition. In addition to regular instrument maintenance, the following accessories are strongly encouraged: Woodwinds: - A supply of high quality reeds Professional: Vandoren, Hemke. Intermediate: LaVoz, Mitchell Lurie - Reedguard to protect reeds during storage and Swab or Pad-Saver for cleaning - Upgrade from your “beginner” or “stock” mouthpiece. Consider:
saxophone: SelmerCstar; clar: Vandoren B45 or Buffet (see Mr. D for other suggestions)
Brass: - A qualty Bach, Yamaha or Schilke mouthpiece (proper size) Percussion: - Mallet/Stick bag or case - Nylon or Wood-tipped Snare Sticks - Yarn/Rubber Mallets, on occasion, may be required. I trust the professional opinion of the owners of our local music stores (Twin Village, U-Crest). Basically, they will not try to sell you a piece of junk OR something you don’t need. But please... be very careful when buying something online! Trust name brands like “Armstrong”, “Selmer” and “Yamaha” and stay away from “off-brands” like “Instruments that look like Trumpets dot com” and “Crazy Cheep Clarinets”.

Goals by Quarter Each quarter, lessons will focus on improving skills and developing well-rounded musicianship
One Scale Memorization, Technical Development & Etudes, Instrument and Equipment Maintenance
Students will be required to learn major and minor scales, the chromatic scale, expanded scales and intervals and studies in selected scales. Additionally, students will be asked to critique performances, demonstrate ability in reading rhythms, and prepare for individual playing through etudes and scale studies.
The individual requirements vary through the different instruments and lesson groups. While learning all major and minor scales is essential to development, some levels of music require a stronger execution of these scales and thus, requirements for each lesson group will be slightly different. Goals will be outlined at the beginning of every session.
Two The 2nd Quarter LHS Solo Project
Perform a NYSSMA Solo at appropriate level of difficulty
Upon preparing a solo, students from all bands will perform for Mr. DeAngelis in January. Lessons during November, December and January are more individualized.
Three The 3rd Quarter LHS Small Ensemble Project
Ensembles – duets, trios, quartets & quintets, Composition Project
Students will create lesson groups based on small ensemble instrumentation, and are given the opportunity to perform in front of the bands during rehearsals or for a concert or in an academic classroom!
Four NYSSMA Music Check-off – in preparation for Major Organization Festival
The bands will attend the annual “major organization” festival in the spring of 2010, and to better prepare for the event, instrumentalists will work to ‘check-off’ their songs with the band directors.
Point Accumulation for 10-week Grading
Music Lessons 40% Scale / Technical / Musical Requirements 30% Band Rehearsal Participation / Concert Attendance 30%
Bonus point(s) are given for participation in events that increase your
musical knowledge and performing ability such as
1) performing a solo at an Erie County or NYSSMA festival, 2) attendance at a BPO or similar professional concert (proof required),
(3) attendance at a Lancaster School District Music Department Concert, or 4) other events at the discretion of the director.
As part of the instrumental music curriculum, students are required to attend a weekly music lesson. Lessons are scheduled on a rotating basis keeping class pullouts to a minimum.

Lessons As part of the instrumental music curriculum, students are required to attend a weekly music lesson. Lessons are scheduled on a rotating basis keeping class pullouts to a minimum. When a student has to miss a lesson, an INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS ABSENCE CARD must be submitted. The card must be turned-in to Mr. DeAngelis before the missed lesson, or as soon as possible thereafter. Please refer to the Instrumental Lesson Structure on the next page for more information on how lessons work. This is a document drafted by all four high school instrumental music teachers. This same system is being used in all five in-school instrumental music ensembles.
Instrumental Music Lessons
at Lancaster High School
Your ensemble teacher will inform you how grading will be weighted
(example: ensemble 30%, quarter project 30%, lessons 40%)
One lesson per quarter will be “forgiven”
(8 lessons graded in a 9-week quarter, 9 lessons in a 10-week quarter)
Opportunities for earning bonus points will be offered in each ensemble.
Lesson make-up credit will only be given for lessons that are
made-up within 2 weeks of the lesson absence.
Make-up lesson credit may be granted for student attendance at early rehearsals
(Student must be on time and participate in the entire rehearsal)
In some quarters, instrumental lessons may occur every-other week,
to allow for more individualized attention. Double credit may be
given for each lesson in this situation.
Lesson schedules will be posted on-line at www.lancasterschools.org
under each music teacher’s classroom website.
A Lesson Absence Form will be turned in when a teacher is keeping a student in
class. The form should be signed and returned to your music teacher prior to the
scheduled lesson (always plan ahead).
Teachers will use e-school grade book and parent portal and post 100 for being
present at a lesson, 0 for absent. The grade will be changed from 0 to 100 when the
lesson has been made-up (within the two-week window).
Students will be allowed to make up 1 or 2 lessons per quarter in a non-traditional
setting that provides tangible evidence that the assignment was completed.
Examples: A Smartmusic assignment, an Auralia assignment (ear training),
an individual ‘Tuning Tendency Sheet’, or a Listening Assignment

Comments
A beautiful, clear sound with excellent control, breath
support, projection and vibrato appropriate to the music. Great
embouchure and posture are used to project a refined and
well-centered sound.
Some minor issues with beauty and clarity of the tone, and/or
periodic lapses in control, projection and breath support. Problems with embouchure and posture may contribute to an
un-centered sound.
Frequent problems with tone quality, control, focus, breath support and projection. Poor
posture and/or incorrect embouchure contribute to an
unrefined, unclear, fluctuating tone.
Serious problems with quality, control, focus, breath support and projection.
Pitches across the entire range of the instrument (and with
accompaniment where applicable) sound perfect in
relation to each other. Intervals are exact and all notes, high,
low, loud and soft are in tune.
Some minor issues with tuning are apparent. Some notes may
sound out of tune and problems occur as the performer plays throughout the range of the
instrument, loud and/or soft, as a solo or accompanied.
Frequent problems with intonation are apparent
throughout the range of the instrument. Intervals are
sounding incorrect as a result of out-of-tune playing, loud or soft,
high or low.
Intonation throughout the entire range of the instrument is poor. The performance is out of tune.
Articulations are correct and well separated and slurs are
appropriate as indicated in the music. Dexterity, facility and flexibility are excellent as the performer uses great coordin-
ation and maneuverability.
Some minor issues with technique contribute to a
performance that has some incorrect articulations.
Improvement is needed on dexterity, facility, coordination
and flexibility.
Frequent problems with technique are apparent through
most of the performance. Dexterity, flexibility and facility
issues prevent the performer from giving an accurate
performance.
Serious problems with articulation, facility and flexibility.
Performance of all notes and rhythms are perfect. All
metronomic and expressive markings in the music are performed correctly with
appropriate steadiness, and with an accurate pulse.
Some notes are incorrect and some rhythms are inaccurate. The performer is having some issues with keeping a steady pulse, and the accuracy and steadiness of the rhythms
wavers at times.
Quite a few notes and rhythms are incorrect. The performer is having difficulty with markings
in the music. Pulse wavers frequently and incorrect notes
are contributing to a poor performance.
A very inaccurate performance. Most notes and rhythms are wrong.
Excellent artistic expression makes for a wonderfully musical performance. Dynamic contrast,
style, tempo and phrasing are accurate and embellished appro-priately. A consistently expres-sive and pleasing performance.
Generally a fine performance, but expression and artistry can
be improved through better dynamic contrast and phrasing. Inconsistencies in expression
limit the excellence of this performance.
The performance lacks expression and artistry through dynamic contrast, correct style
and accurate phrasing. The listener generally hears a
performance lacking emotional expression.
No dynamic contrast, expression or artistry in the performance whatsoever.

PROPOSAL
Through several communications between Merlin Lawson, Ph.D., the Lancaster Central School District music department, High School counseling department, and business office, the following proposal for the creation of the Cleta and Marlo Schermerhorn Honorary Vocal Music Scholarship is presented for Dr. Lawson’s approval.
The Scholarship will be created by Merlin Lawson, Ph.D. and funded annually through his Fidelity Lawson Charitable Trust Fund.
Beginning in spring 2015, Dr. Lawson will award an annual scholarship of at least $1,000 to at least one Lancaster Central School District senior who has chosen to pursue a BA degree at an accredited four year college or university in Music Education (preferably voice).
Acting in the capacity as LHS Counselor, Claudia Tryjankowski, will facilitate the creation of the scholarship application with Dr. Lawson and make-up of the applicant review committee. Dr. Lawson has stipulated that this Applicant Review Committee be composed of the LHS faculty sponsor of the National Honor Society chapter, Music Department Chair, Vocal Music Director and the LHS Counselor in charge of scholarship administration. Also, annually, the LHS Counselor in charge of scholarship administration (currently Mrs. Tryjankowski) will forward the review documents of the top applicants, based on the committee’s review, for final scholarship recipient selection by Dr. Lawson.
Funds will be donated from the Fidelity Lawson Charitable Trust Fund through the Lancaster Town Band, a 501(c)3 organization. The Town Band will in turn pay out the scholarship funds directly to the selected student/to the selected student’s institution of higher education.
In the future, the music department will work with Dr. Lawson on the possibility of soliciting funds towards the scholarship from other alumni who enjoyed the teaching and community service of the Schermerhorn family. The annual alumni picnic may be a source for that solicitation. The next alumni picnic is scheduled for September 3, 2015 at Ripa’s Restaurant, 4218 Walden Avenue, Lancaster, NY, 14086.
