A SPIRITUALITY OF NON-HURRYING

We used to call these the lazy days of summer. I don’t know about you but I find myself busier than ever even when this

should be a relaxing time. I came across this little reflection by Fr. Ron Rolheiser that gave me a little to think about.

~Deacon Greg

Some spiritual writers see hurry as an obstacle to spiritual growth. Donald Nicholl says, “hurry is a form of violence exercised upon time”, an attempt, as it were, to make time God’s time our own, our private property. There are kinds of hurry that come from simple circumstance and duty. Almost every one of us, at least during our working years, has too many things to do. We struggle to juggle the demands of relationships, family, work, school, church, child-care, shopping, attention to health, concern for appearance, house-work, preparing meals, rent and mortgage payments, car payments, commuting to and from work, bus schedules, unwanted accidents, unforeseen interruptions, illnesses, and countless other things that eat up more time than is seemingly available. The gospels tell us that even Jesus was so busy at times that he didn’t have time to eat. Sometimes we are being stretched to the limit, being over-extended, having to juggle too many things all at once, driving faster than we’d like, working to the point of exhaustion, even as there is still more that we should ideally be doing. Sometimes we have to hurry just to make do and simple circumstance and duty eat up every available minute of our time. That’s not necessarily an obstacle to holiness, but can be one of its paths. Still we have to be careful not to rationalize. God didn’t make a mistake in creating time, God made enough of it, and when we can’t find enough time and, as the Psalmist says, find ourselves getting up ever earlier and going to bed ever later because we have too much to do, we need to see this as a sign that sooner or later we had better make some changes. When we hurry too much and for too long we end up doing violence to time, to ourselves, and to our blood pressure.

Vocation View Nothing will separate us from the love of Christ. If God is calling you to full time service in the church,

do not be afraid. The Lord is with you. If God is calling you, call Father Walter Szczesny at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the Month” stories on our website - www.buffalovocations.org.

Catholic Charities The Marriage Counseling Center of Catholic Charities offers two locations (Amherst and West Seneca) and is a unique resource in Western New York because of

its dedication to counseling couples for more than 50 years. To refer a couple, simply give the interested party our phone number (716)839-4406 and have them call our office between 8:45 AM and 4:45 PM weekdays. Find Catholic Charities at ccwny.org, facebook.com/ccbuffalo and twitter.com/ccbuffalo.

Food Pantry The Food Pantry is always in need of donations. Next weekend is the time to bring non-perishable food items for the Food Pantry. Items can be put in containers

located in the back of the church and the parking Lot entrances. The Food Pantry is also always in need of paper products and personal care items, such as toothpaste, cleaning supplies, paper towels, toilet paper, etc. Please help the people in need in our community.

We welcome into our family all newly baptized Christians and offer congratulations to the parents of:

Faith Moment Reflection

For Today’s Readings Are you hungry? Physical hunger can really affect us...changing our mood...zapping our strength...lowering our productivity. It’s only when we are nourished that we feel like ourselves again.

Our reading today reminds us of another hunger - spiritual hunger - that can affect us even more profoundly. In our gospel story of the miracle of the loaves and fishes, Jesus has learned of the death of John the Baptist and is in mourning. Jesus sets off in a boat to pray, to be nourished by the Father. With renewed strength, Jesus returns to the crowd that has gathered and performs a miracle to feed them. What Jesus gave the crowd was much more than food to satisfy their physical hunger. He fed them spiritually as well, offering the care and compassion of our loving God.

Seek nourishment from God so that you may be strength-ened to satisfy the needs of others.

A Unique Retreat

Experience Our Lady of Pompeii and St. Mary of the Assumption is hosting an Icon Writing Retreat. Come and experience a Spirit-filled retreat practicing the ancient art of Icon Writing as we paint the Icon “Angel with the Golden Hair,” a 12th century icon of the Angel Gabriel. The retreat will take place, Thursday, August 14th

through Sunday, August 17th from 9AM to 5PM in St. Mary’s school cafeteria. The cost of the weekend retreat is $100 (payable to St. Mary of the Assumption Church) and includes all of the materials needed to create the icon, instruction and prayer by Iconogbrapher, David Barnas ([email protected]). Number of retreat participants is very limited (10 People). Registration closes August 1st. If you have any questions about this unique approach to spirituality, feel free to contact Deacon Greg at [email protected]. I’ll be making the retreat as well.

Respect Life 8. Married love particularly reveals its true nature and nobility when we realize that it takes its origin from God, who “is love,” (6) the Father “from whom every

family in heaven and on earth is named.”(7)

Marriage, then, is far from being the effect of chance or the result of the blind evolution of natural forces. It is in reality the wise and provident institution of God the Creator, whose purpose was to effect in man His loving design. As a consequence, husband and wife, through that mutual gift of themselves, which is specific and exclusive to them alone, develop that union of two persons in which they perfect one another, cooperating with God in the generations and rearing of new lives. The marriage of those who have been baptized is, in addition, invested with the dignity of a sacramental sign of grace, for it represents the union of Christ and His Church.

Holy Humor A Deacon parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn’t find a space with a meter. Then he puts a note under the windshield wiper that read: “I have circled the block 10 times. If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses.” When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note: “I have circled this block for 10 years. If I don’t give you a ticket, I’ll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.”

But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we

have here." Then he said, " Bring them to me," and he

he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to
