Saint Lawrence Parking Lot Solar Project

Due to the beginning of construction for the Solar Project here at St. Lawrence, portions of the parking lot will be not accessible during the weekdays.

Weekends may be impacted starting the weekend of May 20th/21st. Additional parking is available on the blacktop area between the Elementary and Middle School buildings, as well as the parking across the street at the School District lot.

This project was approved by our Parish Finance Council as part of the Diocesan Solar Initiative for Parishioners to avoid full increases in electrical power rates over the years.

We ask your patience during this time of this project construction here at St. Lawrence.

Thank you,

Fr. Ernesto M. Orci Pastor

Gracias,

Fr. Ernesto M. Orci Pastor

In today’s reading from Acts, Luke tells us how the early Christian community responded to a situation that threatened to destroy its unity. The solution put belief in Jesus Christ before cultural differences and resulted in the establishment of a new leadership role in the Church.

The problem arose because the “Hellenists” accused the “Hebrews” of neglecting their widows “in the daily distribution” of food. The Hellenists were diaspora Jews who spoke Greek, and the Hebrews were Jerusalem Jews who spoke Hebrew. The apostles were Hebrews, not Hellenists.

Rather than ignore the problem, or tell the Hellenists that they were welcome to leave if they were unhappy with the apostles’ administration of community goods, the “Twelve” called a meeting to solve the problem. They instructed the Hellenists to choose seven men who would handle administrative affairs for the Hellenists, and the Twelve would formally appoint the men to this task. The solution gave the Hellenists their own leaders while preserving their unity with, and accountability to, the apostles.

Although there is an apparent distinction between the apostles’ role, “the ministry of the word,” and the soon to be appointed leaders’ role, “to serve at table,” this distinction is not maintained in the rest of Acts. Stephen and Philip, the only two of the seven who appear later in Acts, are both involved in the ministry of the word.

After the seven men are chosen, they are formally installed. The apostles “prayed and laid hands on them.” This is not a ceremony of ordination (that will develop later), but of commissioning. The formal installation of leaders had long been a custom among the Israelites (see Numbers 27:18-23). Nor do scripture scholars think that this scene is the birth of the deaconate. The newly chosen men were responsible not just to serve at table, but to equitably distribute community property, a responsibility that today belongs to bishops.

SOUP SUPPER THANK-YOU’S 2017 We want to express our gratitude to the many people who made this year’s Soup Suppers another great success. We have a profit of $1,426.00 that will help support the charitable works of our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The following groups sponsored Friday night Soup Suppers: The Knights of Columbus, Cub Scout Pack 54, The Guadalupe Society, The Filipino Association, The Social Concerns Committee and those other parishioners who signed up to bring homemade soups. They all did a fantastic job welcoming, serving, and cleaning up.

Thanks also go to Le Boulanger (located on Mathilda Avenue in Sunnyvale) for donating their delicious breads every Friday during Lent.

Several of our sponsoring groups received donations of soup from restaurants. We’d like to express our appreciation to: Sweet Tomatoes on Kifer near Costco La Paloma on El Camino Real, S. C. The Fish Market on El Camino, S.C. Erik’s Deli Café on Kiely Blvd., S.C. Marie Calender’s on E. El Camino in Sunnyvale for their delicious pies.

(Please let these establishments know how much we appreciate their generosity when you patronize them throughout the year.)

Last, but not least, thanks to the faithful attendees who came each Friday evening to pray together remembering Jesus in The Way of the Cross and then dining together in community.

Roseann & Dave Zimbauer,

Querida mujer: Virgen, Esposa o Madre, ¡No renuncies a tu misión!, ¡No renuncies a tu maternidad!

Si eres Consagrada y has entregado tu virginidad o castidad a Dios, ¡Sé madre de muchos creyentes!, ¡sé fecunda y lleva muchas almas a Dios!

MARC.
