Coffee, tea, and other complementary beverages remain available. The new Medical Office Building is scheduled for completion this month. This will give us the entire month to move our clinic providers and surgeons into the new building and re-locate our specialty docs (who are currently house off of Wickenburg Way), back to our campus on Rose Lane and into the old Medical Office Building. We anticipate an April opening. The west-end renovation where we house our diagnostic equipment and where the Surgical Center will be attached is now in phase one of two phases of construction. To compensate for the renovation process, we’ve temporarily relocated several pieces of diagnostic equipment throughout the hospital. This has been a seamless transition for our patients only because of the great work and effort by our registration, diagnostic, volunteer teams. The Surgical & Diagnostic Center is scheduled for completion June 30th. This will allow us the month of July to prepare the Center for sur-geries with an estimated opening date of July 30th. Last but not least, the new Fitness Center construction is scheduled for the beginning of August with a completion date of December 31.

Our Businesses Should Know... IMPORTANT On Jan. 6, the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) National Taxpayer Advocate, Nina E. Olson, released her annual report to Congress. The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent organization within the IRS that is dedicated to helping taxpayers and protecting taxpayer rights and is required by the IRS to submit a report each year and in it, among other things, to identify at least 20 of the most serious problems encountered by taxpayers and to make administrative and legislative recommendations to mitigate those problems. Essentially, the report reiterates a recommenda-tion it made in June that the IRS should release its “Future State” plan docu-ments—something, to date, that the IRS has chosen not to make public, and provide additional details about its anticipated impact on taxpayer service operations and solicit comments from the public.

Other key topics the report addresses include: Pay to Play” Tax System: The National Taxpayer Advocate characterizes the combination of reduc-tions in personal service and plans to direct taxpayers with questions on their tax returns to preparers and other third parties, along with the expan-sion of user fees, as creating a “pay to play” tax system, where only taxpay-ers who can afford to pay for tax advice will receive personal service, while others will be left struggling for themselves.Data Security Concerns: The National Taxpayer Advocate warns of the consequences of giving tax return preparers more access to taxpayer accounts in order to provide increased assistance: “…through a single-minded emphasis on online accounts, the IRS creates a situation where it will face enormous pressure to open up taxpayer account access to unregu-lated return preparers.”Need for Transparency, More Details and Public Discussion: Because the contemplated reductions in service are significant yet undefined, the National Taxpayer Advocate calls on the IRS to release its plans and solicit taxpayer comments. “U.S. taxpayers pay the bills for our government. U.S. taxpayers deserve a say in how the tax collection agency will treat them,” the report says.Public Hearings on Tax Service Needs: To assist the IRS in developing a plan that is responsive to the needs of U.S. taxpayers, Olson announced plans to conduct public hearings around the country in the coming months to learn what taxpayers need from the IRS to help them comply with the tax code.

Wellik Invests in the Future @ Wickenburg Christian AcademyIn a spirited all-school assembly, WCA administrator Kevin Armstrong announced a grant awarded to the school by the Wellik Foundation. A larg-er-than-life check for $117,000 was unveiled by Board Chair Ed Kientz dur-ing the ceremony. The Wellik grant provides a major boost to the school’s long-term “Strategic Impact Initiative,” with funds designated for specific projects that are critical to WCA’s plans for the future. Four focus areas of the grant will impact programming from Preschool through 12th Grade in the areas of 1) Tools for Teachers, 2) Tools for Students, 3) Science Lab and 4) Performing Arts. Donations from individuals and teacher mini-grants funded by the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce Education Committee have also provided essential funds toward the project goal of $190,000. The WCA Board, Administration and Staff are grateful for the affirmation from the community and will continue to make every effort to be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us for the benefit of WCA students.
