HAWAI‘I-WASHINGTON SERIES HISTORY: Two of UH’s biggest wins in school history

have come against the Huskies. In the 1973 season opener, as 50-point underdogs, the then-Division II Rainbows upset UW, 10-7 in Seattle. Harold Stringert intercepted three passes and Levi Stanley had 11 tackles.

In the 2007 regular season finale at Aloha Stadium, UH rallied to defeat the Huskies 35-28 to cap a 12-0 season and secure a berth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

In the teams’ last meeting in 2011, UH ral-lied from a 21-point first quarter deficit but the Huskies held off the Warriors, 40-32.

The series began in 1938.

HOMECOMING FOR STEVENSON, MOSES:UH safety Taz Stevenson, of Mililani, O‘ahu, appeared in 34 career games for the Huskies

from 2010-12 as a key special team’s per-former and backup safety. He did not play in 2013 due to a season-long injury. Stevenson is penciled in to start at safety this week. UH running backs coach Wayne Moses coached at Washington from 1997-2000, including the Huskies’ 2001 Rose Bowl vic-tory over Purdue. Moses was a four-year letterman at UW. He started at cornerback for two seasons, helping the squad to a Pac-8 title, a Rose Bowl win, and a No. 10 ranking in the final Associated Press poll as a senior.

RECAPPING THE 2013 SEASON:UH lost five games by seven points or less

and three games were decided on the final possession with two overtime contests.

The Rainbow Warriors became just the third team in school history to finish winless in conference play (0-8) in 2013.

UH’s 11 losses were the second-most in school history (12 in 1998) and the 11-game losing streak was also second-longest all-time.

UH’s four combined wins in 2012 & ’13 were the fewest in a two-year period since the 1997 (3) & ’98 (0) teams combined to win three.

UH suffered its third consecutive losing season and fourth in the past five years. The last time the program posted three straight losing campaigns was during a five-year drought from 1994-98.

UH finished 19th nationally in passing offense (301.4) while quarterback Sean Schroeder was 21st individually, averaging 269.1 yards per game.

NEW FACES: The Rainbow Warrior coaching staff includes five new coaches this season. Kevin Clune joins the staff as the team’s new defensive coordinator after spending the past five years as linebackers coach at Utah State. Kurt Gouveia, a 13-year NFL veteran and one of seven charter members of Polynesian Hall of Fame, is the new out-side linebackers coach. Veteran running back coach Wayne Moses spent 35 years at 14 different schools. Jordan Wynn and Luke Matthews were promoted from graduate assistant to quarterbacks coach and wide

2014 Hawai‘i Football Weekly Release 4 HawaiiAthletics.com

GENERAL NOTES HAWAI‘I VS. WASHINGTON (AUG. 30, 2014)those drives lasting four plays or less. Over the final four games, the offense pro-duced four of its longest drives of the season, including an 18-play drive totaling 99 yards in 5:51 against Navy.

LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD: During heartbreaking overtime loss to Wyoming last season, UH set a school record for the most points scored in a loss (56) eclipsing the previous mark of 48 in a 57-48 loss to San Jose State in 2000. The total was also the most points scored since a 56-14 win over UC Davis in 2011. The Rainbow Warriors also amassed 624 yards of total offense (499 passing, 125 rushing), the highest total in the Norm Chow era.

VETERAN GROUP: The offensive line unit is the most experienced group on the team with a combined 80 career starts and four returning starters. Headlining the group is Ben Clarke, a junior from Littleton, Colo., who started all 24 games of his career at cen-ter. The two-time all-MW honorable mention made the switch to left tackle during spring practice. Dave Lefotu, a senior from Pearl City, O’ahu, has 21 career starts, includ-ing 20 at right guard. Sean Shigematsu, a senior from Kapa’a, Kaua’i, has 14 career starts, primarily at right tackle. Center Kody Afusia started all 12 games last season and has 14 career starts. Also returning is Frank Loyd, Jr., who has seven career starts and is Shigematsu’s back-up at right tackle.

BIG PIECES TO FILL: The receiving corps will have a new look for the 2014 season after the loss of two starters and a heralded true freshman in a span to two weeks. Just before the start of fall camp, the unit saw the depa-tures of returning starter Keith Kirkwood, who decided to transfer, and part-time starter Vasquez Haynes, who underwent season-ending surgery. In addition, true freshman Devan Stubblefield, a heralded recruit out of Saint Louis School in Honolulu, suffered a season-ending injury on the first day of camp. Haynes and Kirkwood both showed prom-ise as first-year receivers in 2013. GENERAL NOTES HAWAI‘I VS. WASHINGTON (AUG. 30, 2014)

NORM CHOWHead Coach3rd SeasonOverall Record: 4-20MW Record: 1-15

With nearly 40 years of experience as an assistant coach at both the collegiate and professional ranks, Norm Chow has spent the past two seasons as head coach of the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors. Statistics aside, Chow has spent his two seasons instilling discipline and a new offense to a program which at one time appeared in eight bowls during a

12-year span. UH switched from the Run-and-Shoot offense to a more conventional Pro-Set offense, which Chow has mastered and become known as one of the top offensive minds in the country. Chow, a Punahou School alum and Palolo Valley native, was named the program’s 22nd head coach, Dec. 22, 2011, succeeding Greg McMackin who retired after four seasons as head coach of the Warriors. Chow also became the fi rst Asian-American head coach of a major college football program. His long coaching resume includes more than 40 years of experience collegiately and in the National Football League. Among his 36 years as a collegiate coach, Chow spent 27 years at BYU, one year at North Caro-lina State, four years at USC, three years at UCLA and one year at his alma mater, Utah. Chow also spent three years as offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. Prior to arrival in Mānoa, Chow was the offensive coordinator at Utah, where he led the Utes to a run-ner-up finish in the Pac-12 South Division in 2011 and a 30-27 victory over Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl. Known as an offensive mastermind, success has followed Chow where ever he’s been. A three-time national Assistant Coach of the Year, Chow has served as offensive coordinator for three national cham-pionship teams (Brigham Young-1984 and USC-2003 and ’04) and has tutored three Heisman Trophy winners (Ty Detmer-BYU, Carson Palmer-USC and Matt Leinart-USC) and six NFL first-round draft picks (Palmer, Leinart, Philip Rivers-N.C. State, Steve Young-BYU, Jim McMahon-BYU and Marc Wilson-BYU).

All players and coaches will be available for interviews after practice from Monday through Thursday. Every effort will be made to accommodate interview requests but players will not be asked to miss class, study hall, practices, or medical treat-ment. Players mobile or home numbers will not be released by the Sports Media Relations Office.

MEDICAL POLICYThe UH Sports Media Relations Office abides by fed-eral law pertaining to the releasing of injury informa-tion. We will not disseminate any information about a student-athletes’ injury without written consent. The only information given to the media will be if a student-athlete is “probable,” “questionable,” or “doubtful” to play. However, the student-athlete may release information about his/her injury.

WE ARE THE “RAINBOW WARRIORS”When referring to the UH football team, please use the nickname “Rainbow Warriors.” In an effort to stan-dardize its nicknames, on July 1, 2013, the University of Hawai‘i officially changed its men’s team nickname to “Rainbow Warriors.” The school’s women’s teams are still referred to as “Rainbow Wahine.” The word “Wahine” (pronounced wah-HEE-nay) means woman in the Hawaiian language. The rainbow has been part of UH’s nickname since 1923.

WHAT’S AN ‘OKINA?What’s that punctuation mark in the word Hawai’i? In the Hawaiian language, it’s called an ‘okina, which translates literally means separator. Phonetically it is referred to as a glottal stop, similar to the sound that would be made in the English oh-oh. The ‘okina is actually a letter in the Hawaiian language.
