Big-Screen Upgrade: TV Or Not TV? That Is The Question

With prices falling and technology improving, when you’re ready to upgrade to a giant screen for TV,

movies and gaming, which is best—a TV or a projector? The short answer is both—because a big-screen TV is best in a bright room for most TV shows, while a projector can provide an engaging home theater experience for watching 3D movies, sports and playing games. Consider the advantages:

A Projector Offers: • Image Size: In general, a projector can produce a larger image at a lower cost than traditional displays. • Scalability: Given the room size, you can choose the perfect image size (ranging from 50” up to 300”). • Portability: The projector’s lightweight, compact design lets you put it away when not in use. • Space: The projector doesn’t take up a lot of space, so you can use it anywhere and even get a giant screen in a small apartment. • Decor: It’s small, so the room isn’t dominated by an electronic display. • Experience: A superlarge screen creates an immersive experience, just like in a theater, particularly with 3D movies and 3D games that practically come to life around you. With a Mitsubishi projector, you can get exclusive 3D eyewear that provides virtually distortion-free 3D performance.

A Huge-Screen TV Offers: • Ambient Light: TVs create a vivid display,

even in rooms with large windows. • Supersimple Installation: TVs are easy to install and set up; simply place the TV where you want it to be, plug in your source devices and power it up—that’s it. • Size: The cabinet of one 92” home cinema television is only 24” deep, so it fits through standard doorways. • Technology: Like the majority of digital

High gas prices should make more Americans become pro-infl ation—at least when it comes to tire pressure.

The FactsThe U.S. Department of Energy says properly

infl ated tires can improve fuel economy by 3.3 percent and save 1.2 billion gallons of gasoline nationally.

The National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration estimates that underinfl ated tires contribute to more than 600 fatalities and 33,000 injuries a year. Yet fewer than one in fi ve vehicles has four properly infl ated tires, according to a Rubber Manufacturers Association tire pressure study. Worse, at least 15 percent of vehicles were found to have at least one tire underinfl ated by at least eight pounds per square inch (PSI).

What You Can DoHeeding a few hints, however, can not only

help motorists stay safe, but help them save money.

• Good driving habits help keep tires in optimum condition (avoid fast starts, stops, potholes and curbs).

• Take fi ve minutes a month to check all your tires. Simple, regular maintenance can help drivers save as much as 12 cents per gallon at the pump and keep tires rolling longer so they don’t need to be replaced as often.

To be tire smart, you need to play your PART—Pressure, Alignment, Rotation and

Tread. These are the key elements of proper tire care.

Pressure: Check tire pressure monthly with a tire gauge and infl ate to vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure.

Alignment: Misalignment of wheels can cause uneven and rapid tread wear.

Rotation: Rotate tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles to help you achieve more uniform wear.

Tread: Advanced and unusual wear can reduce the ability of tread to grip the road in adverse conditions.

Public Service Announcement for United Way

Eight million Americans have gout. It’s the most common form of inflammatory

arthritis in men over the age of 40. However, its symptoms can be similar to those of a stubbed toe or ankle sprain, which is why so many people often misinterpret the pain associated with a gout attack for something else. Jim Belushi is one of them.

When the actor and performer’s big toe became too swollen and painful to touch, he credited it to a jogging injury. But after a visit to his doctor, he found out that he actually had gout.

“When gout attacks for the first time, many sufferers mistake the pain for an impact-induced injury or a sprain,” said Herbert S. B. Baraf, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at The George Washington University. “It is important to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of gout and to seek proper treatment.”

Now, knowing the importance of diagnosis and taking an active part in treatment management, Belushi is taking part in the “Check Out Your Gout” campaign to increase

awareness surrounding gout and a more advanced form of the condition known as refractory chronic gout, or RCG.

Symptoms of gout manifest in painful flares that can include sudden inflammation, redness and swelling in the joints. Gout flares are common in the big toe but can happen in any joint of the body.

“When I first developed gout, I didn’t want to do anything about it. I thought I could tough it out, but when the pain became too unbearable for me to perform on stage, I saw a rheumatologist and got my gout under control,” said Belushi.

Gout is caused by a high level of uric acid in the blood. When this level becomes too high for the body to process, uric acid builds up and can crystallize in and around joints, resulting in a gout attack. In advanced cases, collections of uric acid crystals may deform joints and even cause visible lumps to form on hands, feet and joints. “It is important to seek the help of a rheumatologist to manage the underlying cause of gout: a high level of uric acid. Over time, gout attacks may become more frequent and severe, leading to joint destruction, deformity and other health issues,” said Dr. Baraf.

In nearly half of developed countries, 50 percent of people are obese or overweight. With obesity, diabetes and

heart disease on the rise, now is the time to take control of your health, fitness and well-being. Cycling can be fun, low impact, inex-pensive and helps improve health while controlling weight. It burns around 600 calories an hour-and lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke. In addition, cy-cling promotes psychological well-being. Several studies suggest that cycling leads to reduced stress, improved mental abili-ties and a more positive attitude. To help you get into cycling, members from one of the United States’ premier professional cycling teams, Optum Pro Cycling presented by Kelly Benefit Strat-egies, provide these fitness and nutrition tips: • Make sure your bike fits: “Finding the right bike fit is important for a comfort-able ride,” explains Rachel Heal, Wom-en’s Performance Director and a former Olympian. An expert can help you find a bike that suits your body and riding style. • Ride at your own pace: Know your limits. If you can’t keep a smooth pedal stroke or you aren’t able to talk or take a full breath, slow down.

• Cross-train for strength: Men’s Perfor-mance Manager and three-time Olympic athlete Eric Wohlberg suggests adding lower body exercises such as single leg squats, lunges, jumping rope and running to build strength and power for cycling. • Eat for optimal energy: Professional cyclist Jade Wilcoxson knows firsthand the health benefits of cycling. Just five years ago, she was diagnosed as predia-betic. Jade took up cycling and quickly learned she had a talent for racing. She recently signed with Optum Pro Cy-cling’s newly formed professional wom-en’s team. To feel her best, Jade recom-mends a diet high in protein, fruits and vegetables. She also recommends staying away from processed foods, using the rule of “seven ingredients or fewer.” • Prepare nutritionally for a long ride: On long, rigorous rides lasting more than two hours, your body will need about 250 to 300 calories every 45 minutes to an hour. Sports gels or small snacks that in-corporate lean protein and carbohydrates can be smart choices. • Recover effectively after a ride: Take in some calories immediately after a long ride to help your body recover. Wohlberg recommends chocolate milk to incorpo-rate calories, sugar and protein quickly.

After cooling down, eat a good meal of lean protein and carbohydrates and plenty of water to rehydrate. • Enjoy it: The best thing about cycling is that just about anyone can do it, at any level, and still have fun. “You control how hard or easy your workout is,” said Wilcoxson. • Learn more: For more information on cycling and to follow the team, visit www.humanpoweredhealth.com.

Save Money on Groceries

For many people, cutting back on their grocery budgets can be an overwhelming experience.

They know they’re spending too much, but don’t know where to begin to cut. Often, they fear that they will deprive themselves and their children if they become frugal. The good news is that there are ways to have your cake, eat it and save money at the same time. The whole secret is to start slowly. There are countless ways you can cut, but if you need to, target just one thing at a time - you will still be saving money if you do only one thing. If you are a frugal beginner, try these simple suggestions for saving on your food bill: Cooking frugally is like changing your diet. You need to learn gradually how to save money and cook frugally. Don’t expect that you will get your food bill down to $300 for four people in the first month if you are spending $600 a month right now. Try cutting just $25.00 or $50.00 a month. Even if you cut back only $50.00 a month, you will save $600.00 a year. If you save just $1.00 a day that is $365.00 a year. You can then apply that $365.00 a year to paying off your credit cards. At 21 percent interest, you will save over $70 a year. This will eventually cause a snowball effect since the more you pay off, the less you pay to interest. When you pay less to interest, you have more each month to apply to paying off your overall debt. This means that as you pay off the debt, the rate that you can pay it off increases. Before you shop, take a tour through your pantry and your refrigerator. Be organized! Don’t buy what’s already hiding in your kitchen. If you’re a fan of coupons, remember this: It’s not what you save, it’s what you spend. If you save 30 cents on something you wouldn’t ordinarily buy anyway, you haven’t really saved anythi ng. A typical fruit item is significantly larger than one serving. Most people would be just as happy eating a small apple as eating a large one -- so buy smaller fruits! You will save money by the pound. This month, try two meatless meals a week (or one, if you’re a die hard meat fan).

can live the frugal life and still be comfortable. I feed my family of six on $400 per month. Over five years, when my husband earned an average of $22,000 per year, we paid off $20,000 debt. When cutting your grocery bill, it’s the little things that add up.

Make simple meals. One-dish meals can contain your meat, your vegetable and your bread. Drink water for your meals. If your family is used to drinking milk, juice or pop for every meal then start by cutting juice from one meal or snack a day and drinking only water. After you get used to this, cut from another meal until you drink only water for meals and a glass of juice or milk at snack time. You can also try allowing one glass of juice at meal times and then water after it is gone. You save over $500.00 a year by cutting just one glass of juice per person per day for a family of four. Don’t assume home made is cheaper. If you get a VERY GOOD deal on chocolate chips and ingredients for candies, it is cheaper to make them than buying them pre-made. Make sure you do the calculations, though! If you don’t purchase them on sale, homemade

candies can be more expensive than candies purchased at the store. Stop wasting food. Give young children small portions. They can always have more if they are still hungry. Give them a half glass of juice and a half sandwich so you don’t waste uneaten food. Put food in the refrigerator right after the meal so it doesn’t spoil. Use leftovers for lunches, in other dishes or frozen in one portion sizes for a quick meal. Remember, cooking frugally is a mindset. You have to change your cooking and eating habits. Don’t get discouraged if one idea fails. Try another one. Stop buying things like toaster pastries and breakfast bars for breakfast. Eat oatmeal, pancakes, granola and fruit instead. Don’t assume that bulk is cheaper. Compare cost by the ounce or pound. Most people don’t think they
