Increase Your Comfort and Energy Savings

If you’ve ever thought about remodeling your home, you’re far from alone. As sales of existing homes remain sluggish, homeowners nationwide are opting to

remodel their houses instead of moving. The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University expects remodeling expenditures to reach more than $113 billion in 2012, compared with $110 billion last year. Instead of focusing only on cosmetic face-lifts, many homeowners are choosing projects that also boost energy efficiency and increase comfort. One easy and cost-effective project that produces impressive results is installing a superefficient cooling and heating system, especially in those rooms that seem too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Fortunately, there’s one type of system that requires no ductwork, so installation is fast and doesn’t require any messy renovation. This system can also provide an excellent whole-house solution in older homes where ductwork is not practical to install, or as a supplemental option if the home has existing central air conditioning. The equipment itself is small and compact and doesn’t require reconstruction of ceilings and walls to add ductwork. In most cases, a simple three-inch opening in the wall or ceiling is all that’s needed. The first manufacturer to bring this type of cooling and heating without ductwork to the U.S. is Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating (Mitsubishi Electric). In addition to offering

increased comfort and easy installation, its products: • Are up to 35 percent more efficient than a window air-conditioning unit and up to 40 percent more energy efficient than central air conditioning. • Provide a permanent solution that doesn’t take up window space and block views. • Are whisper quiet—no annoying clanking or humming. • Come in a wide range of system sizes for large or small applications (one or more rooms or the whole house) and in multiple styles: wall-mounted, floor-mounted, ceiling-recessed (ducted) and ceiling-concealed (ducted) indoors. The outdoor units have an extremely small footprint and fit neatly into tight spaces. • Offer separate temperature/fan speed controls for each room. • Feature control options such as automatic switchover from cooling to heating. • Provide low-maintenance operation. Some of the indoor units even have an i-see Sensor™, which scans the room for hot and cold spots and automatically makes adjustments to achieve the desired comfort level faster. To find the system best suited for your home and calculate potential energy savings, the Mitsubishi Electric website features a convenient Solution Advisor. Is Your Detergent Taking You to the Cleaners?Expert Shares Tips to Save Money by the Scoopful

The national crime wave that stunned the nation earlier this spring – coast-to-coast thefts

of Tide laundry detergent and its use in illicit drug buys – didn’t surprise Kris Anderson. “Laundry detergent can be expensive and it’s a product just about everyone values – even drug dealers,” says Anderson, president of Country Save Corp. (www.countrysave.com), maker of all-natural laundry and dish detergents. “But it’s not just stores getting ripped off; it’s consumers. Anyone who buys laundry detergent and doesn’t pay close attention when they scoop it ends up using too much,” Anderson says. “Not only is it a fallacy to believe that more soap will make your clothes cleaner, it’s a huge waste of money and it’s actually bad for your clothes.” Almost every brand of detergent has a declaration of loads per box on its packaging, he says. And for almost every brand, the number on the box does not match the scooper size provided in the box. Anderson, whose environmentally safe Country Save laundry detergent is also distributed by the Department of Defense to all soldiers in the field, offers these facts about using your detergent prudently and economically.

• Don’t just fill up the scoop and dump it in the washer. “You definitely won’t get the maximum number of loads from the box,” Anderson says. “For instance, if you use Ultra Tide’s 40-load box and fill the scoop for every load, you’ll get just 15 scoops per box.” Instead, he says, put on your glasses, if necessary, and look at the lines on the side of the scoop. The top line, for a full load, is usually well below the lip of the scoop. Highlight the lines with a dark-colored marker to help you avoid the problem in the future. If you have soft water, using half the recommended amount is sufficient. • Too much soap causes clothes to fade faster. Over-use of detergent is actually the leading cause of fading. Clothing may also acquire a thin, filmy layer of soap because your washer can’t thoroughly rinse the fabric. Do you tend to be itchy? It could be you’re wearing your detergent! • Too much soap’s not good for your washing machine, either. Excess soap can gum up the works as soap deposits and lint form in your washing machine. These can contribute to mold – and its accompanying stench; they can plug up filters and other openings; and they can lead to mechanical

breakdowns. In some machines, you may also end up wasting (and spending more for) water as the machine spins into extended cycles in an effort to remove the soap. • Run a test load to see if you’re over-soaping. Run a load with clothes only – no detergent. Do you see suds? That’s an indication of how much detergent you are wearing. • Reduce pollutants by using an all-natural detergent. While Country Save had the first phosphate-free detergent on the market back in 1977, many companies have now removed the additive because of its harmful effects on rivers, lakes and other fresh water. However, most companies continue to use other additives, such as optic brighteners, fragrances and dyes, Anderson says.

“The more often consumers choose the most natural products, the better off our environment will be – even if some people still use too much!

About Country Save Detergent

Country Save became the nation’s first phosphate-free detergent when Elmer Pearson – creator of Elmer’s Glue -- introduced it in 1977. A chemist and environmentalist, he developed Country Save products without animal testing or animal byproducts. They’re designed to be environmentally safe and they’re recommended for people with sensitive skin. The line also includes dish detergent and oxygen-powered powdered bleach. Find Country Save products on the company’s website and amazon.com.

Small businesses need effective, low-cost marketing strategies, and tools like Facebook and Twitter deliver megahits for

microbudgets. Yet while many business owners are being advised to engage customers via social media, not all are informed of the risks. Social network sites are fertile waters for Internet pirates who troll for unsuspecting victims, hoping to steal data by planting malware in the form of computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses and spyware. If you are a small-business owner, work for one or hope to become one, these tips can help keep your business data secure: • Share carefully. Clearly identify what kind of business information should be on social networks. Don’t post confidential information, such as financial information, passwords or anything else you would not want shared. • Guide employees. Develop a social media policy on the potential risks and ways to participate safely. Include personal and professional best practices, and teach your people how to avoid scams. Remind employees to limit personal comments to their own personal pages. • Beware new twists. Thirty percent of all viruses that infect computers originate from spam, targeting users with seemingly legitimate posts, such as “I just checked how many people have viewed my profile.” Cyber

thieves target easy victims first: individuals and organizations that haven’t adequately protected their computers, networks, mobile devices, Wi-Fi and Internet connections. Another technique is “likejacking” or “clickjacking”: When users click on a link, the site steals their Facebook account and spreads the spam to all their contacts. • Don’t automatically click on URL links. If an offer in a social post sounds too good to be

As gas prices continue to fluctuate, it’s always a good time to evaluate your driving habits and take

steps to keep yourself and your car on the road to savings at the pump. To demonstrate the 10 common mis-takes that drivers make to affect fuel economy, General Motors conducted a driving test. Two of their fuel econ-omy engineers, Ann Wenzlick and Beth Nunning, drove identical Chev-rolet Cruze LTs on a typical workday commute. They each drove 20 min-utes with city and highway driving, including a stop for coffee. Wenzlick averaged 37 miles per gallon using efficient driving habits and by maintaining her car and Nun-ning averaged 21 miles per gallon. On average, that was a $100 price difference at the pump. Here are some of their tips based on what they learned: • Get out of the drive-through lane. Idling for 15 minutes burns through about a quarter of a gallon of gas. Parking your car and going into the store to get what you want can actu-

ally help to save money on gas. • Take it easy. Jumping on the gas at every light, only to hit the brakes, isn’t going to get you home any fast-er. However, driving smoothly can improve your mileage by 20 percent. • Drive 70, not 80. It may not sound like much, but it’s likely a 10-mph difference can save you up to four miles per gallon when driving on the highway. • Use cruise control. It turns out that maintaining a constant speed over time is much more efficient than speeding up and slowing down over and over again. • Roll up the windows. At slower speeds, turning off the air-condi-tioning can save you a little, but on the highway, it’s better to roll up the windows. If the windows are down, the increased air pressure can slow the car and consume more energy than air-conditioning will. • Get rid of that extra stuff in the trunk of your car. Every 100 pounds of weight you carry in the car can re-duce fuel economy by 2 percent. • Don’t ignore the “check engine”

Driving Smart Can Mean Significant Savings At The Gas Pumplight. Serious engine problems can cut your fuel economy by up to 40 percent. • Try to bundle your errands. Plan ahead. An engine at operating tem-perature can be up to 50 percent more efficient than a cold engine. So, when possible, it’s much better to run five errands in an afternoon than running one errand every day of the week. • Make your tires last. Properly inflated tires will improve your fuel economy and they will last longer. Also, rotate tires at manufacturer-recommended intervals. • Use the grade of motor oil recom-mended for your vehicle; the same goes for the octane level of gasoline. Motor oil that says “Energy Con-serving” on the performance symbol of the American Petroleum Institute contains friction-reducing additives that can improve fuel economy. For most cars, the recommended gasoline is regular octane. In most cases, using a higher-than-recom-mended-octane gas offers no benefit-and costs more. • Ditch the roof ornaments. At

highway speeds, up to a third of your fuel is used to overcome wind resis-tance, so even small changes to your vehicle’s aerodynamics can have a big impact in fuel economy. • It pays to be prudent. According to Roger Clark, manager of the GM Energy Center, “With a well-main-tained car, the best drivers get up to 25 percent more miles per gallon than average. When you combine a poorly maintained car with inefficient driv-ing habits, the fuel economy of the worst drivers can be 50 percent be-low average.” Clark added, “The fuel economy of every vehicle is greatly affected by how you drive and how you care for your vehicle. Often, relatively small changes to your driving habits and vehicle maintenance can make the difference between being on the bot-tom or the top of the fuel-economy scale.”
