How To Fix The Housing Market

At the height of the financial crisis in 2008, the U.S. government bailed out our nation’s banks and nationalized our home mortgage system.

Four years later, most of those bailouts have ended and taxpayers have been repaid in full. Unfortunately, that is not the case for mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Remarkably, they remain in government control, continue to dominate the mortgage market, and still owe taxpayers over $140 billion. Neither Congress nor the White House has a viable plan to get that money back or to get the government out of housing finance. As a result, taxpayers—not banks or investors—are now on the hook for trillions of dollars of mortgage risk. And the government continues to add to that risk, accounting for over 90 percent of new mortgage credit today, double the amount it provided just a few years ago. Even worse, recent actions in Washington threaten to make Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac permanent wards of the state. Moreover, millions of potential homeowners cannot get a mortgage because private sources of housing credit are scarce. Many of those private sources cannot compete with the government. Your elected representatives in Washington aren’t paying attention to this problem! But there is a plan to fix it. Former officials from the Obama and Bush administrations,

Jim Millstein and Phillip Swagel, have crafted a way to restart private housing markets, ensure access to affordable 30-year mortgages, protect taxpayers from future bailouts, and repay them for saving the two largest sources of housing finance in our country: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Millstein and Swagel discussed their plan in their recent article for The Washington Post. Call your representatives in Congress. Let them know that we need to end the last bailout and the nationalization of our home mortgage system. Go to www.whoismyrepresentative.com to tell them that you support housing finance reform. Under a new proposal to restructure the housing market, the mortgage guarantee businesses would be privatized..

Notice of Breach of Personal Information

On the morning of September 10th, 2012, Original Medicine Acupuncture & Wellness, LLC at 1500 Lomas Blvd NW, Suite B, Albuquerque, New Mexico discovered we had been broken into and burglarized. The thieves’ original intention was presumed by police officers to be prescription pads due to some of the things taken. However, two office laptops containing personal and patient data were also stolen. The laptops were securely password protected. To the best of our knowledge, there were no physical medical records stolen. The data on the laptops is backed up nightly through remote back-up accommodation with our vendor and the material contained on the laptops has been reconstructed. The laptops contained some patient information which included name and address, DOB, health insurance information and some social security numbers. Though there were no clinical notes included the insurance billing information including diagnosis codes. The data was stored on the laptops primarily for billing and record keeping purposes. No credit card information was included in patient information.A police report was filed immediately on the break-in through the Albuquerque Police Department and an investigation remains open. Our alarm system has been updated to discourage further attempts at break in and locks were changed and reinforced. It is believed the risk to the data is very small but want to make you aware of the situation in the event that you would like to take additional precautions. These may include monitoring your credit report more closely than usual and checking your insurance statements of benefits for any services that you did not obtain and report anything suspicious to your insurance provider. If you wish to talk with us about this matter please feel free to contact us at 505-503-6490 or email to [email protected] Pub. Tips On Caring For Your Battery This Winter

Cold weather affects a car’s battery more than any other engine component. Filled with fluid containing mostly water, batteries are susceptible to freezing. Additionally, cold weather thickens engine oil, forcing the

battery to work harder when starting the car. A vehicle’s battery loses 33 percent of its power when the temperature dips below freezing and more than 50 percent of its power when the temperature falls below zero. Plus, the more electrical devices in the car—such as electronic fuel injection systems, electric windows, sunroofs and audio systems—the more power the battery should have. If the car is exposed to extreme cold, the best guarantee against failure is a battery with a high level of cold cranking amps, at least 550, depending on the type of engine in your vehicle. “Motorists should have their battery checked when they learn of an incoming wave of cold weather,” Interstate Batteries Technical Services Manager Gale Kimbrough said. “A fully charged battery is the best defense against cold weather and vehicle nonstarts. In cold weather, engines require more cranking amps and batteries are less efficient, reducing their charge acceptance and ability to start an engine.” To help, the experts at Interstate Batteries recommend the following: • Have the vehicle’s starting and charging system tested every three months or every oil change. • Use a battery charger to maintain charge levels and keep the battery in good condition. If the battery is more than three years old, have it tested to ensure it can survive the coldest winter months. • Have the battery tested before taking a long trip or after it has been recharged. • Inspect the battery cables, posts and fasteners. Make sure the cables are in good shape and are secured firmly to the battery. • Clean the battery terminals with a wire brush or battery cleaner spray.

January is National Stalking Aware-ness month, and Dr. Michelle Ward, who studies predatory criminals, is on a mission to empower stalking

victims. Dr. Ward has been the victim of stalking herself and hosts the Investiga-tion Discovery series “Stalked: Some-one’s Watching,” which airs Wednesdays. Ward says people are usually stalked by someone they know, so the behavior can initially be difficult to identify. But over time, stalking creates a continuous, un-welcome and threatening presence. While there are different types of stalk-ers, their behavior often consists of: • An increasing amount of contact—fol-lowing and surveilling the victim, making unannounced visits, making repetitive phone calls, sending unsolicited messages or giving unwanted gifts. • Forcing an interaction—making threats, initiating lawsuits or spreading gossip about the victim. If you’re being stalked, Dr. Ward says that while you’ve done nothing to cause this behavior, there are things you can do to protect yourself. 1. Involve the police. Even if you haven’t been physically threatened, stalk-ing is a crime that police should take seri-ously. Keep your case officer’s name and number with you.

2. Gather evidence. Establish a pattern of behavior. Keep a journal noting the date and time of every single event. Save all e-mails, text messages, letters and gifts. Screen your calls through voice mail and save the recordings. 3. Do not respond. Even returning un-wanted gifts can encourage a stalker. 4. Speak up. Tell friends, co-workers and neighbors to be on the lookout and have them record anything suspicious. Don’t try to deal with your stalker on your own and don’t be afraid to ask for help. 5. Take legal action. Find a legal advo-cate. If it is deemed safe to do so, get a restraining or protective order against your stalker. If the stalker violates it, police can arrest him or her immediately. 6. Be hard to find and do not have a pre-dictable routine. Get an unlisted number, block all calls from unknown numbers, and screen your calls. Get a P.O. box and don’t give out your home address. De-lete your social media profiles. Vary your routine, changing where and when you shop and how you get to and from work. If you think you’re being followed, don’t go home. Stay in a safe place with other people and call the police. 7. Increase your home’s security. If possible, add an electronic home security system, a video surveillance system, flood-

• Choose the appropriate battery for the vehicle. It should be the correct size and voltage, especially for a vehicle that experiences extremely harsh winter conditions. • When possible, keep the vehicle in a garage overnight, especially in areas with extremely harsh winter conditions. • Avoid damage to the battery and keep connections from loosening with a snug-fitting battery in the battery tray. • If the battery is not a sealed model, check the fluid levels, using distilled water to fill any cells that appear low. • Always wear protective eyewear; remove all jewelry and wear long sleeves to protect skin from an explosion of battery acid. In just 30 seconds, Interstate All Battery Center® locations can provide motorists with a free printout analysis of their vehicle battery condition. In addition to automobile batteries, Interstate All Battery Center offers an Outrageously Dependable® line of more than 16,000 different portable power products.
