E citing News

When group facilitator Marilyn Pavetto organized an Easter luncheon for members of the HCSC coffee club she planned everything in detail. Vol-unteers, entertainers and staff all knew exactly what they had to do on the day. Unfortunately, what Marilyn had not planned for was an unex-pected cyclone and torrential rain north of Ingham. In the face of gloomy weather, coffee club members smiled and turned up for their much awaited event. On Friday the 11th of April the planned barbeque luncheon went ahead despite the preparations for the flood that isolated Ingham residents a few days later.

Hi my name is Carolyn Kemp and I am married with three children. I

have worked at Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre (HCSC)

for 13 years. Every day is different at HCSC which is one of the

reasons why I enjoy my job so much. I have been fortunate to have

experienced various roles over these 13 years. At first I was

employed as an administration assistant doing 10 hours/week, mainly

working with HCSC’s Vacation Care Program, the first one in

Ingham. After a few years I progressed into the Community Support

Service Program doing 15 hours/week. As HCSC expanded I was

given the opportunity to move into the Community Housing Program

working 21 hours/week. My commitment to HCSC has given me the

opportunity to go from a part-time worker to a qualified full time

worker. Since 2011 I have worked in the Homelessness Program, and

over the past years I have been able to complete a Certificate IV in

Social Housing and a Diploma of Community Welfare Work with the

support of HCSC staff and management. This year I have been

fortunate enough to be part of the expansion to our new premises at

‘The HUB’ on McIlwraith Street and I look forward to the years

ahead.

Meet the staff

The Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre thanked its volunteers during Volunteer week. Their contribution was acknowledged as they continue to provide invaluable support to staff delivering essential ser-vices to the Hinchinbrook community. HCSC is proud to have over fifteen volunteers who regularly offer their time at the Centre. Importantly, the management committee at HCSC is also made up of committed community members who volunteer their time. Over a cup of tea and a slice of chocolate cake, Carol Sanderson con-firmed that volunteering is an unpaid, but very rewarding activity that helps build strong communities. Carol, who began volunteering in 1980 when the Centre first opened its doors, shared some stories about her volunteer experience with HCSC staff and new volunteers Leslie and Kathy.

From all the staff, and the community THANK YOU

Volunteers’ week celebrations

After recent flooding from Cyclone Ita, many of our families in our community were affected by flood water in their homes. We have had many phone calls for assistance at the centre, with some families having lost a lot of their belongings, from living in a flood prone area and with water levels reaching much higher than anticipated. Our centre has been able to offer support to victims of the flooding, either through one-one counselling or by sourcing donations. HCSC are working in consultation with GIVIT, an online organisation, in sourcing these donations. Anyone from Australia is able to access the website, have a look at which people require assistance, what items they actually require and donate such items. We have had some very generous donations from people across states, including Qld, NSW & Victoria. We have also had some very generous donations come in by community members in Ingham, by requesting donations through Facebook – Buy, Swap, Sell. If you feel you are able to support people in your community by donating something, then please check out the GIVIT website on:

www.givit.org.au or come and speak with a staff member at HCSC. If you have been affected by Cyclone Ita and her associated flooding and feel like you could benefit from talking with an experienced worker, please feel free to contact HCSC on 4776 1822 to arrange an appointment

HCSC offers a free transport service to Townsville for non-urgent medical patients (PTSS voucher required). Escorts of patients can also travel, please check eligibility and discounted fares. If there is room, anyone may use this service for visits to an inpatient, or medical appointments not covered by the PTSS (e.g. dental), but will have to pay a fee. Contact the Centre for more information. We strictly do not operate a shopping or airport transfer service. The bus departs Ingham approximately 2 hours before the first appointment in Townsville. This means that we coordinate our schedule each day depending on the needs of our clients. As soon as everyone has finished with their medical appointments, the bus returns to Ingham. Timetables may vary due to appointments and we contact everyone travelling the day before to confirm travel and departure times. We will try our best to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable journey.

Book by phoning 4776 1822, if you miss us leave a message with your name and phone number
