Wastewater treatment refers to three different locations:
1) comprehensive sewage treatment plants at the outlet into
the river or sea,
2) treatment facilities at locations of sewer overflows directed
into surface water bodies and
3) industrial wastewater treatment at the point of its origin
before it enters the drainage system.
BCE covers the design of all relevant treatment processes, such
as mechanical, biological and chemical cleaning (primary,
secondary and tertiary treatment). Also, we closely accompany
the current development towards a fourth purification stage to
cope with anthropogenic trace substances in aquatic environ-
ments (microfiltration, reverse osmosis, carbon absorption).
Building sewers in open, supported trenches is efficient and reasonable as long as the depth is not too large and
there are few restrictions. It is difficult and expensive, maybe even impossible, when depth increases or when
building structures have to be crossed. In these cases, pipe driving is a good option. BCE supervises large sewer
construction sites in densely populated areas. We have particular expertise and technical monitoring equipment
with respect to pipe driving for both small and large diameters. And of course, we will support you in all aspects
of project and construction management.

Typically, new or refurbished sewer systems have to be integra-
ted into existing ones, which imposes structural and hydraulic
restrictions. Local modifications may alter the entire system
behavior. Of course, many other restrictions have to be consi-
dered in urban areas.
Thus, tasks tend to get complex - both technically and in terms
of management. We stem these tasks as we reshape main
sewer lines of entire city districts, e. g. in the densely populated
Ruhr Area of central Germany.

Rainwater feeds our rivers and is a source of life for aquatic systems. In urban
areas, however, rain may cause storm-water floods, damage and pollution of
nature and environment. Furthermore, accelerated rainwater discharges
increase flood intensity downstream.
Therefore, sophisticated solutions of rainwater management are a particular
challenge in urban areas – and one of our favorite tasks. For example, we have
designed and realized artificial lakes on a former steel mill site or along a
decommissioned airport. While new landscapes are created in densely popula-
ted areas, rainwater is retained and treated before it is released to the natural
water cycle.
Pumping stations are typical elements of urban drainage systems. We
want them to be efficient and reliable. We design both small and
large pumping stations, conduct the tendering and supervise the
construction process on your behalf. In case of existing pumping
stations, either the rehabilitation of the structure or demolition and
reconstruction may be an economic option. Experts for structural
engineering and refurbishment are part of our team. We also design
the entire E&M equipment as well as the process measuring and
control technology. We are able to provide the entire plant design to
you exclusively from a single source.

Back in 1960 Dr. Kalweit and Dr. Björnsen partnered as engineering consultants for water management and
hydraulic engineering – in the following five decades this joined venture developed to a company with several
subsidiaries and branches at ten locations in Germany and Poland. The Head office is located in Koblenz. Since
1988 the company operates under the name Björnsen Beratende Ingenieure GmbH (Björnsen Consulting
Engineers, BCE). Today BCE has eleven shareholders and about 190 employees.
The spectrum of business fields has steadily been extended over the last decades.
Nowadays BCE provides consultancy services in the fields of waste, energy, hydroinfor-
matics, civil engineering, environment and water.
Engineering highlights our strong history and track record in designing and imple-
menting technical solutions. We are proud of our heritage and confident that we as
engineers can make a difference by originating, designing, shaping, orchestrating and implementing sustainable
solutions.
Since the start over 50 years ago BCE has been a community that continuously pushes the boundaries for what is
possible. Most importantly we feel responsibility to use our know-how to engineer balanced sustainability for a
better planet. We are collaborative, professional, innovative and responsible with our clients, always aiming for
the highest level of quality.
With our level of dedication and attitude we can make a difference for the better for our clients, for nature and for
future.
Ecology-minded experts for material flow management, waste
management, hydraulic engineering and renewable energy.

into surface water bodies and
3) industrial wastewater treatment at the point of its origin

Building sewers in open, supported trenches is efficient and reasonable as long as the depth is not too large and
there are few restrictions. It is difficult and expensive, maybe even impossible, when depth increases or when
building structures have to be crossed. In these cases, pipe driving is a good option. BCE supervises large sewer
construction sites in densely populated areas. We have particular expertise and technical monitoring equipment
with respect to pipe driving for both small and large diameters. And of course, we will support you in all aspects

We

Automatic sorting systems are mainly composed of various mechanical
sorting processes and additional sensor based sorting technology. Typical
sorting tasks are the sorting of plastics according to their material type (PET,
HDPE, PP, PS, mixed polymers, etc), beverage cartons and paper (de-inking and
cardboard fractions).
A further application is production of Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) from waste
fractions with high calorific value. Sorting facilities are designed as flexible as
possible, to be able to react on changing waste market situations. We provide
all necessary planning and engineering services to design effective sorting
facilities according to your individual demands and needs.
Over the last few decades BCE successfully contributes to the rapid technical develop-
ment within the range of waste treatment technology and protection of environment.
According to the principle “reduce before reuse before disposal” we design suitable
technology solutions for mechanical and biological treatment of municipal solid waste
to extract most recyclables, produce a high calorific value fraction as substitute fuel
for energy production and to reduce organic carbon content in the residues that are
dedicated for landfilling. We have extensive experience in the planning and realisation
of biological treatment of biowaste and residual wastes, which enables us to provide
the best possible technical and economic solution.

innovative projects, often with scientific approach and methods.
Numerous projects comprise essential aspects of landfill
technology such as development of sealing systems, landfill-gas
and leachate collection and treatment which have successfully
been accomplished by our company in the last decades.
Landfill engineering is still one of our core businesses. The range
of our services includes site selection, landfill construction and
consulting during operation to closure and aftercare. We also
provide consulting for potential pretreatment of waste before
landfilling and it`s impact on material properties, compaction,
gas-production.
Based on the experience and know-how we have gained we are
able to provide landfill design according to state of the art, in
consideration of local conditions and individual demands,
focussing on sustainability and economic step by step
