Dear Students, Families, Friends and Colleagues

Welcome to the first issue of the new term’s Head’s Weekly Newsletter!

I hope you have all had a restful fortnight and that you felt ready to start this last term of 2016-17.

This first half term is the shortest of this year, with only five weeks into which we will fit all of the learning! It is made more challenging by the Bank Holiday Monday, the main site closure on the Local Mayoral Elec-tion on 4 May.

Just when we thought we had it all under control, we received a notifica-tion that the main school site will need to be closed on the newly an-nounced General Election on Thursday, 8 June 2017.

On both of the election closure dates, only the main site is affected, with ALMA operating as normal.

The most important message of this week is that of a launch of a public consultation regarding our provision.

Attached to this newsletter is the consultation document, which I have already distributed to all the families, staff and Governors earlier this week, sharing the proposal to bring ALMA provision back onto the main school site from September.

With the decommissioning of the assessment function of ALMA, it makes perfect sense for the small group of remaining students who have a confirmed Abbot’s Lea School place for September to join their peers here at the main school site.

Such integration would make a massively positive difference to our students, staff and the families and allow us to use the substantial amount of money currently spent on the rental of Matthew Arnold to be better spent on the education of all of our young people.

I hope you will all help us achieve this positive change by emailing Liver-pool City Council [email protected] by 12 May 2017 with a one-line email showing your support. This is a “volume”, not “quality” request and so, the more supportive responses, the better! Thank you very much in advance for your help!

I started this section in last issue of my newsletter and I will continue to say goodbyes to anyone joining us, returning to us or leaving us here.

This week’s goodbyes will be said to three colleagues:

Emma Crellin, who has worked at our school for a number of years, joining us as a qualified social worker and supporting our families and playing a key part in our safeguarding team. Emma has decided to take up a post of Education Welfare Officer with Liverpool City Council and, whilst we all love her dearly, if you see her next time it may be to discuss any problem-atic term time absences!!! We wish her all the very best and thank her for all of her hard work and service to the students, families and the team of Abbot’s Lea.

We also bidding farewell to Catherine Bailey Williams, one of our special-ist support staff working directly with the students, who has decided that the time is right for her to see the world! Catherine is leaving us today to embark on an amazing journey to the USA, where she will take a lead on the Camp America activities for the youngsters from all around the world. We hope that one day she will return and share her experiences with us and with the students! Have a blast!

Lastly, we wave goodbye to James McGuire. James has a positive “can-do” attitude and has helped transform the lives of the students in our Low-er School. Whilst I have not known James that long, he is one of the ones I will never forget: behind the façade of a cheeky chappie, is a man of sub-stance, who has long planned to joined the Armed Forces - a dream which is now coming true for our young hero! James - stay true to yourself, keep safe and go “do good”! Many of our students see you as a role model so a visit in your uniform is a must!

We are also welcoming back Darren Stephens, our Site Manager, who this week started re-integrating back to work after several months of recovery fol-lowing an operation. We are so glad to see you back, with next week marking the official return to work. Just in time for a massive summer-time refurbish-ment of the facilities project! :-)

WELCOME AND GOODBYES

We have been contacted by Liverpool City Council notifying us that Merseyside Po-lice (in partnership with LCC) are introducing truancy patrols once a week until the end of this academic year. The patrols will be conducted in a different area of the city each week. City centre operations are also being planned. The place of safety has been designated as the school at which the pupil is regis-tered. This will mean any unaccompanied pupils stopped by the patrol will be returned to school. All pupils stopped will have their details recorded. Written notification will be issued to school and a letter sent to the parent/carer informing them that their child had been stopped during a truancy patrol. An Education Welfare Officer will inform the relevant school, to confirm the pupil is registered, and the approximate time they will be returned. All pupils who are off site with the permission of the school (doctor's/dentist appoint-ments for example) will be issued with an authorisation pass. Please ensure that prior notification and evidence of appointments are given to school, as authorisation passes cannot be issued until this is received.

In Red class this week we have been looking at our new topic which is all about Pirates.

We did an experiment around floating/ sinking using different objects from class.

We also used dish sponges to make our own pirate ships and we had so much fun rac-

ing them.

This week Yellow class had a nice walk to Tesco with a shopping list for snack items,

work has also begun our new topic 'Pirates'.

ALMA

LOWER SCHOOL

The pupils in the Lower school have had a really settled first week back in school after their holidays. Well done everybody! In Ls1 we have had a lovely visit to cafe for some snack. Everyone behaved very well and enjoyed the experience. Pupils have also been trying new foods and made sand-wiches using different bread. Everyone tried something new and out of their comfort zone including chicken, cheese, ham, lettuce, tomato, bread. Some realised they actu-ally like chicken and made their own sandwiches for the first time!! Super! LS2 have earned lots of Dojo points this week for being really lovely friends and work-ing hard in their lessons. We visited a local library where the pupils picked a book each to take back to school. They were so sensible in the library and loved the experience of stamping their books.

LS4 have been listening to and learning about Greek Myths. This week we went on an adventure in the labyrinth with Theseus to fight the Minotaur.

Middle School is led by Mr McVerry ([email protected]) A big welcome back to all of our Middle School Families, we hope you had a restful break. This week has been enjoyable and the pupil's have been excellent this week. MS5 had their class trip out to say goodbye to Miss Catherine Bailey, who is off to work in Camp America over the summer. I am sure you will all join us in wishing her the best of luck and in making sure she makes some great memories while she is out there.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Students have been working incredibly hard on their GCSE, Entry Level and BTEC

coursework and we have almost reached the finish line!! Well done to everyone!

RADIO CITY—CASH FOR KIDS

SUPERHERO DAY

Just a reminder that we will be taking part in Radio City’s Cash for Kids Superhero Day.

Pupils (and staff!) are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite Super-

hero!

It will take place on Friday 5th May.

All money raised will go to Wish Upon a Star Foundation, a small local charity that raises funds for children with life threatening and terminal illnesses.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUB

Please note that due to the bank holiday on Monday 1st May 2017, there will be

no after school club on both Monday and Wednesday of next week.

After school club will resume on Monday 8th May 2017.

Dear Students, Families, Colleagues and Governors

Ref: Consultation to bring ALMA provision back onto the main site

Following on from my previous communication regarding our vision for Abbot’s Lea School and also our

concerted efforts to strengthen our financial position, I have put forward to the City Council a proposal to bring

ALMA provision back onto the main school site. I attach for your attention a formal document issued today by

the Liverpool City Council which marks the beginning of the process of public consultation into the proposed

changes.

The proposed relocation would save the school substantial amount of money in rental costs (this year we

were facing a bill of £66K for just the use of facilities) and reduce the leadership costs of managing a split site

provision.

Additionally, and maybe most importantly, we want all of our students and staff to benefit from the strength

of our collective knowledge, skills and resources, to ensure that all of our students benefit from the highest

quality education, therapeutic interventions and life skills’ development. We believe that being based on one

site would not only allow our students such improved access to our brilliant resources, but also encourage

the staff to work more closely together, resulting in stronger Autism expertise and better knowledge sharing.

Lastly, but very importantly, we want to create a one-stop central point of contact for the families, making our

partnership even more effective.

I therefore write to ask that you help us and our cause and actively voice your support by emailing

[email protected] and sharing your support for the relocation of ALMA onto the main

Abbot’s Lea School site from September 2017.

Whilst I do not envisage a Cabinet refusal, I do foresee that there may be some opposition to the proposed

changes and so - every “positive” vote and supportive comment counts, with all the responses due to the

Council by Friday, 12 May 2017. Whether you are a student, family member (close or extended), a carer,

a staff member, a governor or a friend of our school – I hope you can help!

CONSULTATION

on a proposal to make a prescribed alteration to Abbot’s Lea School

assessment provision currently provided on the Matthew Arnold Primary

School site.

The City Council is consulting on a proposal to change provision at Abbot’s Lea School*

The proposal is to relocate the assessment provision, currently provided on the

Matthew Arnold Primary School site, to the Abbot’s Lea School site with effect from 1st September 2017.

*Abbot’s Lea School may have been referred to in some documentation as Abbot’s Lea Special School, Abbots Lea School, Abbotslea School.

Abbot’s Lea School’s provision based at Matthew Arnold Primary School may have been referred to in

some documentation as Abbot’s Lea at Matthew Arnold, ALMA, A.L.M.A, AL@MA)

BACKGROUND

The current assessment provision at Matthew Arnold School was established under the

management of Abbot’s Lea School in January 2012, and provides 25 assessment places for

children with special educational needs aged 3 – 7.

Children attend the provision for varying periods of time depending on the extent and

complexity of their needs. Once the assessment is completed, an appropriate school place is

secured. Some of the children may transfer to their local mainstream school and others may

be placed at a resourced mainstream school or a special school depending on their needs

and the wishes of the parents/carers.

Those pupils who receive a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and moderate

learning difficulties (MLD) or above, during their assessment may transfer to Abbot’s Lea

School once their assessment is complete if appropriate. Abbot’s Lea currently caters for

pupils with ASD and moderate learning difficulties or above, between the ages of 3 – 19.

With the de-commissioning of the assessment function for Abbot’s Lea School, there is no

benefit of location at Matthew Arnold Primary School.

Abbot’s Lea School is currently in financial deficit recovery stage and moving ALMA

provision to the main site would result in savings of up to £66K in rental (from Matthew

Arnold) a year, and significant staffing costs of management and administration.

THE PROPOSAL

The proposal is to relocate the assessment provision, currently provided on the Matthew

Arnold Primary School site, to the Abbot’s Lea School site and decommission the assessment

function with effect from 1st September 2017.

The Benefits of the proposal

The relocation of the groups of students back to the main school site would have numerous

benefits:

- Students – greater access to the specialist teaching and therapy resources

- Financial - savings

- Managerial – cohesion of leadership and management

- Administrative – centralisation of support

- Quality Assurance – daily overview of quality of provision

- Staff development – reintegration of the fractured team back to the main team

- Widening participation and engagement from families – creating a central port of call

for all parental enquiries and including parents in the main school activities.

School main site

SEN Improvement Test

In considering these proposals, the Local Authority has taken account of the SEN Improvement Test, specifically:

a) the proposals will improve access to specialist staff, resources and facilities; b) the proposals will widen access to high quality, purpose-built accommodation for

pupils with special educational needs; c) the proposal will increase the number of places available to meet the needs of pupils

with ASD in the City.

In addition, pupils will be considered for home to school transport under the criteria of the Authority’s SEN Transport policy. What happens next? Feedback from the consultation will be considered by the City Council’s Cabinet. If the Cabinet decides to continue with the proposals after considering the comments received, the City Council will begin the procedure to increase the pupil numbers at the School

a) Statutory notices will be posted at the schools and published in the Liverpool Echo, in the Summer Term 2017.

b) There will be a period of four weeks during which anyone can comment on or object to

the proposals.

Any comments or objections received during this period will be reported to the City Council’s Cabinet which will then decide whether or not to approve the proposals.

Timetable

The expected timetable for progress of the proposals is:

26 April 2017 Dear Students and Families Ref: General Election – school closure I am writing to inform you that we have now received a notification of the Abbot’s Lea School site being designated for the General Election 2017. This means that the school will be closed to the students on our main site on Thursday, 8 June 2017. This applies to the main ALS school site only and students based at ALMA are unaffected by the political process on this occasion. Students at ALMA are expected to attend school as normal on that day. I will write to the Transport Team to inform them of this closure but ask that the families pass this notification on to the individual drivers and escorts teams to ensure full awareness.
