Head’s Up! October 8 th , 2019 Psychology was well represented at the 2019 Children’s Hospital Foundation of MB Teddy Bear’s Picnic through the I Want to Be a Scientist tent hosted by the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. In addition to volunteers Dr. Lorna Jakobson and Dr. Leslie Roos, Dr. Melanie Soderstrom’s Baby Language Lab was there partnering with “citizen scientists” to conduct research related to how babies learn language. Dr. Soderstrom indicated that close to 350 kids participated in The Baby Language Lab Citizen Science Project. You can read more about the project here. Dr. Leslie Roos also recently gave an on camera interview with CTV to discuss a new national report released by Children First Canada which suggests that a minimum of 1/3 of Canadian children do not have a safe and healthy childhood. Psychology was well represented at the 2019 Children’s Hospital Foundation of MB Teddy Bear’s Picnic through the I Want to Be a Scientist tent hosted by the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. In addition to volunteers Dr. Lorna Jakobson and Dr. Leslie Roos, Dr.

Melanie Soderstrom’s Baby Language Lab was there partnering with “citizen scientists” to conduct research related to how babies learn language. Dr. Soderstrom indicated that close to 350 kids participated in The Baby Language Lab Citizen Science Project. You can read more about the project here.

Dr. Leslie Roos also recently gave an on camera interview with CTV to discuss a new national report released by Children First Canada which suggests that a minimum of 1/3 of Canadian children do not have a safe and healthy childhood. As well as her recent interview, Dr. Roos also co-authored a recent article on back to school transition for CHIRM with tips for helping children manage anxiety and allergies at school.

Faculty Awards

Dr. Lorna Jakobson has won a 2019 Faculty of Arts Teaching Excellence Awards, Established

Faculty Category. Recognized by the Faculty of Arts as one of the most prestigious awards in the Faculty of Arts, Dr. Jakobson is well deserving of this recognition. Congratulations Dr. Jakobson!

Faculty Updates

Psychology welcomes Dr. Danielle Gaucher to the Department. Dr. Gaucher joined our Social/Personality program this August.

Previously a professor at the University of Winnipeg, Dr. Gaucher has a research focus on Social Psychology, Intergroup Relations, and Social Change. Her program of research investigates how and why social inequality is maintained, examining processes at both individual and institutional levels. The goal of this research is to provide insights about how to foster more prosocial behaviour and social arrangements.

Dr. Ray Perry recently concluded research visits with international collaborators at UBC (Hoppmann), UCLA

(Weiner), UCalifornia at Irvine (Heckhausen), Munich (Pekrun, Barchfeld), and Nuremburg (Lang).

Alumni Updates

Dr. Jeremy Hamm (R. Perry, PhD thesis supervisor) recently received a tenure-track appointment in

Health Psychology for 2019, in the Department of Psychology, North Dakota State University. Prior to that, Dr. Hamm received a CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship, Concordia University & University of Manitoba, (2018-20).

Brooke Beatie was awarded the 2018/2019 Marion & Morgan Wright Clinical Psychology Award for a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology who has completed a minimum of four practica but has not yet completed the graduation requirements

Elena Bilevicius was awarded the 2018/2019 John R. Walker Clinical Research Award in recognition of the scholarly and scientific achievements of a clinical psychology student in the clinical training program

Congratulations to Nic Brais on being selected to receive the 2018-2019 Lillian Webb, Arthur Webb, and Elsie M. Webb Scholarship for a University of Manitoba B.A. graduate with strong leadership abilities in their first year of their Master’s program.

Rob Dryden received the 2019 SSHRC Tri-council Master’s Supplemental Award and the 2018-19 Joseph Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship-Master’s Award. Congrats!

Iloradanon Efimoff was recently awarded the Department of Psychology DATA (Direct Aid to Achieve) Award as well as the Doctoral Award for Indigenous Students offered to meritorious Indigenous graduate students who demonstrate significant research ability and scholarly potential.

Sandra Hunter has been recommended for the Mark Lewis Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a student of a high academic standing, starting the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology. Congratulations Sandra!

MEET THE NEW PSYCHOLOGY GRADUATE STUDENTS

SANDRA HUNTER (Clinical) Sandra is from the Interlake of Manitoba. She received her honours degree at the University of Manitoba in June of 2019. Her advisor is Dr. Leslie Roos and Sandra is interested in research involving mental health and parent-child relationships. Her interests outside of school include leisure reading, quilting, and knitting

KAYLA JOYCE (Clinical) Kayla is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she will receive a Master of Science degree in Psychiatry Research from Dalhousie University. Her advisor is Dr. Leslie Roos. Kayla’s research will focus on identifying determinants of success among several prevention programs. She is specifically interested in assessing relations between parental mental health and parenting outcomes. Outside of school, Kayla enjoys taking long nature hikes and tending to the many health need of her beloved cats.

LUKE KEILBACK (ABA) Luke is from Winnipeg, He received his M.Sc. from St Cloud State University, Luke will be advised by Dr. Pear, and his research will be on variable ratios of reinforcement.

Tyler Kempe (Clinical) Tyler was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario but considers himself from Winnipeg. He received his Honour’s Degree from University of Manitoba. His advisors are Raymond Perry and Matthew Keough and he plans to develop and research technology based treatment interventions. Tyler’s other interests include songwriting, Web and Software Development.

Melissa Krook (Clinical) Melissa is a Seattle, WA native who recently received her BA in Psychology from the University of Washington. She is joining U of M as a Clinical Psychology MA student under the mentorship of Dr. Corey Mackenzie. Melissa’s thesis research will focus on psychosocial factors that influence mental health, including social isolation, and how these factors may differ according to age and income. Before returning to school, Melissa worked as a successful creative industry professional in Los Angeles and continues to take on new projects as time allows. She also enjoys art, used bookstores, and live music all while powered by copious amounts of caffeine.

Reegan McCheyne (Clinical) Reegan is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He received his B.A. Honour's degree in Psychology with a minor in Business Management at the University of Manitoba. He will be completing his Master's Degree under the supervision of Dr. Lorna Jakobson. They will be exploring the topic of alexithymia. Outside of school interests, he loves movies, video games, and french vanillas from Tim Hortons!

Sara Montazeri (Developmental) Sara received her M.A. in the field of General Linguistics from the University of Tehran. Her advisor is Dr. Melanie Soderstrom and she intends to work on child language development and more specifically, child-directed speech. Sara likes watching movies and series, shopping, reading books, cooking, going to the gym, walking, running, going to the cinemas, picnics, learning languages and cultures, learning language skills online using coursera, studying English vocabulary books, listening to music and singing.

Teaghan Pryor (Clinical) Teaghan is originally from Portage la Prairie MB, but has lived in Winnipeg for the past 5 years. She received her B.A. Hons from the University of Manitoba in June 2018. Dr. Kristin Reynolds was Teaghan’s advisor for her honours and will be her MA advisor as well. She plans to continue working with Dr. Reynolds in the research areas of knowledge translation, mental health information evaluation and older adults.

For her MA thesis she hope to evaluate an online decision aid their lab has created for late-life depression in a randomized controlled trial. Teaghan will continue to work with Dr. Reynolds on lab projects such as Dr. John Walker's Informed Choices website and the development and evaluation of a telephone based mental health program for socially isolated older adults. She will also continue working with her colleagues in the IBD Clinical and Research Center in Internal Medicine at the U of M to complete the pilot study for and online CBT intervention for individuals with inflammatory bowel disease and anxiety or depression. In her spare time Teaghan loves to cook, travel, take care of her plants, and spend time with her friends and husband.

Marlee Salisbury (Clinical) Marlee graduated from Western University in London, Ontario in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in psychology. She will be entering her first year of the MA program in Clinical Psychology at the University of Manitoba this fall, studying under Drs. Leslie Roos and Ryan Giuliano in the Hearts and Minds Lab. Her primary research interest is in understanding how early life stress affects social-emotional development and attachment, particularly in children who are at risk for intergenerational trauma and mental illness. The long-term goal of Marlee’s research is to inform clinical practice and interventions for managing the psychological

impact of chronic stress in early life. Aside from her clinical interests, Marlee is a self-professed cat lady and professional thrifter, with a love of interior design and fashion!

Caitlyn Semenek (School) Caitlyn is from Winnipeg, MB. She received a double Honours in Psychology and Criminal Justice from the University of Winnipeg. She will be studying School Psychology in the comprehensive stream. Caitlyn has worked in Youth Corrections for the past 7 years at the Manitoba Youth Centre. During her free time she chases around her two toddlers and enjoys being active.

Alyse Sukovieff (nee Newman) (Clinical) Alyse is from Winnipeg and received her Master's of School Psychology from the University of Manitoba, working with Dr. Richard Kruk. She spent 3 years working as a School Psychologist in Winnipeg and is now returning to the University of Manitoba to work with Dr. Ed Johnson in the Clinical PhD program. Alyse will research relationships between self-compassion, social anxiety, and sharing information on social media forums. She hopes to learn about how feelings of social anxiety are impacted after

posting on a public forum such as Instagram or Facebook. Outside of her academic life, Alyse loves to dance, do Zumba and spend time with friends and family.

Katie Thieme (School) Katie is from Richland, Washington and has spent the past 17 years teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in Puyallup, Washington and Calgary, Alberta. Katie has her BA in Elementary Education from Central Washington University ('01) in Ellensburg, WA and her Masters of Science in Deaf Education from Idaho State University ('02) in Pocatello, ID. Outside of school she has been a gymnastics judge for 15 years. Katie is also an avid board gamer and quilter.

Jianjie Zeng (Quantitative) Jianjie is from China, XinJiang Karamay. He used to work for an online Educational psychology assessment company for K12 students in Shanghai. He received his bachelor degree in Psychology and then a Master of Science in Technology Management (2017) from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His advisor is Dr. Johnson Li and Jianjie will focus on quantitative methods in psychology, such as multi-SEM, or other advanced statistic analysis by using R or Python. Outside the school, he loves watching

movies and listening Beatles albums (Sgt. Pepper always his best).

Katharine Zinger (School) Katharine is from Winnipeg, MB, and received her BA (hons) in Psychology from the University of Manitoba. Her advisor is Dr. Richard Kruk and she will be examining the relationship between morphological awareness and reading. Katharine’s interests outside of school include travelling, camping, music and gardening.
