We would like to remind our parents

of the importance of calling the

school to advise of a child’s absence

from class, especially with the colder weather upon us.

The safety of our students is of the utmost importance and it also helps to

maintain accurate attendance information for your child’s records. If we do

not receive a phone call or a note, our School Messenger phone system will

start calling all students marked ‘absent without reason’ at 9:30 A.M. and

1:30 P.M. The order of calling starts with the home number & will continue

with all phone numbers on file for parents, guardians and all emergency

contacts.

(For parents of students in Grades 7 & 8, if you receive an absence call or

email reporting of your child missing “period 3” it is in reference to shops

class at RDPC. The same message above for students in Grades 6 thru 8

for an absence in “period 9” refers to your child missing band or choir at

RDPC.) We thank you for your help!

A big thank you to all students, parents and staff who helped support Terry’s Run for a

Cure by bringing in donations during September’s fundraising!

We reached our goal of $1000 and raised $1012.85 towards cancer research in

Canada.

Terry Fox would be proud of all the Dragons who brought in donations!

Deerwood is having their Scholastic Fall Book Fair

Nov. 5, 6, & 7 from 9 am – 4 pm daily.

Come check out the selection of Scholastic books!

Proceeds from the book sale go towards new books for the school library.

Don’t forget to put your name in the draw.

There will be 2 student draws to win $25 in books.

Hope to see you there!

Mrs. Beck

If you have not already done so, please take a moment to review

your child’s demographic sheet (golden) that was sent home in

September. These forms are sent home at the beginning of every

school year to ensure we have current and updated contact

information on file. In the event that your child is not well or we

need to touch base for other reason, it is important that we are

able to make a connection with home. Follow the instructions at

the top of the form, sign and return to the office as requested.

If you have already done so, thank you. If you have misplaced the form and

require a new one to be sent home, please let the secretary know and she will issue

a new one.

Parents & Visitors, PLEASE report to the

office anytime you are in the building!

The safety of our students is up to

all of us!

The Junior High volleyball

season is in full swing.

Schedules can be found on

Please remember to collect can tabs at home, school & work as the

staff & students of Deerwood School continue to help raise money through the “Tabs for

Wheelchairs” program in an effort to help purchase wheelchairs for those in need in Thompson this

year!

This program has been so successful over the last 20 years because of each and every one of you! Please drop your tabs off at the office & we will forward them

to Juniper School!

On November 21st, 2019, Skills Manitoba will welcome 12 gr. 6 students from each of the Thompson schools to 'Trades and Technology Olympics'. The Try - A - Trade style course is constructed so that students complete a variety of tasks associated with Trades and Technology Careers. Much of this challenge involves testing student's skills in various fields, while getting them to try out a trade or technology in an exciting, hands on way. Students will be exposed to at least 8 trades and technology careers; engineering, baking, mechanics, technologies, electrical wiring,

plumbing, sewing & transportation.

A light lunch will be served to program participants and advisors/teachers.

Fans, parents, mascots and cheerleaders are welcome!

Monthly Practice:

A Few Simple Mindfulness Exercises

Come Back

When you catch yourself being caught up in worries about the future or guilt and regret about the past, just notice that

it is happening and simply and kindly say to yourself, “Come back.” Then take a calming breath and focus on what you

are doing right now.

Three Senses

Another helpful mindfulness trick is simply to notice what you are experiencing right now through three senses – sound,

sight, touch. Take a few slow breaths and ask yourself:

What are three things I can hear? (clock on the wall, car going by, music in the next room, my breath)

What are three things I can see? (this table, that sign, that person walking by)

What are three things I can feel? (the chair under me, the floor under my feet, my phone in my pocket)

Think of these answers to yourself slowly, one sense at a time. It’s impossible to do this exercise and not be

present and mindful!

Food Allergies, what are they?

A food allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts to a protein in food as being harmful and

causes an allergic reaction. This is why everyone needs to be very careful when packing school lunches

and snacks.

-Read food labels and avoid sending foods that contain nuts

-Discourage your children from sharing their food at school

-Encourage your children to wash their hands before and after eating

-Please inform the school of any allergies.
