School Profile Narrative Summary

Hendersonville High School began a tradition of excellence in education in 1901 and has provided for the secondary education needs of this community at the present campus since 1926. The school was remodeled and expanded in 1991. HHS has a positive traditional atmosphere which values the supportive, intimate relationships that allow students to discover and develop their talents in a small school. The school has a highly qualified and dedicated faculty and staff including 16 alumni of HHS. In addition, HHS has a very active alumni association. HHS excels in academics, athletics and the fine arts. Our students continue to record top SAT scores year after year, with a recent participation rate of 61%. HHS has been designated a School of Excellence, with over 90% of students at or above grade level and a graduation rate of over 95%. Additionally, U.S. News & World Report named HHS a silver medal winner in its ranking of Best High Schools in the United States and we also received the NC Super Sportsmanship Award given to one school each year by the NC High School Athletic Association, NC Coaches Association, and Athletic Directors Association. Hendersonville High School is a school with a diverse student body. The many positive offerings at HHS continue to attract a high percentage of students choosing to attend school in our district. Our enrollment has increased by more than 70 students from last year to give us a total of 711 students. With only 3 total drop-outs in the 2009-2010 school year, HHS is among the top two schools for highest graduation rate in the state of North Carolina. Over 90% of our students attend some form of higher education after high school graduation.

Henderson County Public Schools - 5 - 8/31/2010

Henderson County Public Schools - 6 - 8/31/2010

After thorough analysis of the End of Course test scores, EVAAS, and teacher records by the administrative team and the School Improvement Team, the three school improvement goals have been developed and strategies adjusted to meet our ongoing needs. Each year we thoroughly reexamine our data so we can adjust and change our focus as necessary. We also used data compiled from student, teacher, and parent surveys about our school to guide us in the school improvement process. We will continue to strive to improve EOC scores, specifically in English II, Biology, United States History, and Civics & Economics. We will continue to implement Learning Focused strategies with the assistance of our instructional coach and implement Read 180 instruction, expecting these programs to help us achieve our goal of improving test scores. We will also expand Preparing Learners for Ultimate Success (PLUS), to preview course material in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies courses for at-risk students. We will offer tutoring for all EOC at-risk students throughout the school year.

Progress on School Improvement Plan for 2009-2010

Hendersonville High School increased our student proficiency from 86.60% to 92.25% and achieved high growth. Our efforts throughout the school year focused on how to increase student achievement. Additionally, there was ample evidence of vocabulary, activators, and summarization strategies in all classes and many teachers worked with our instructional coach to evaluate their personal teaching practices and discover new strategies. During the 2009-2010 school year, HHS continued our Preparing Learners for Ultimate Success (PLUS) program in English and Math. Teachers worked closely with our PLUS instructor throughout the year to preview key concepts, topics, and pieces of literature with students selected by the classroom teachers for additional support. We also gave extra EOC tutoring for at-risk students. We strongly believe the PLUS program helped increase our test scores for the 2009-2010 school year.

Highlights for the 2010-2011 School Year

This year we plan to continue the Freshman Academy which targets students who are at-risk coming from the middle school. These students will be grouped together in English, math, and science in order to provide them the additional support they may need to succeed in high school. The Freshman Academy teachers will have common planning to share successful strategies and identify concerns about students so we can put interventions in place sooner for these learners. These teachers will have common themes in their classes and will function as an integrated unit to help these students be successful. Additionally, we plan to focus on improving writing scores. After reviewing last year’s test data, we feel there is room to grow in this area. As a result, teachers will work directly with our instructional coach throughout the year to learn best practices and identify areas for improvement based on last year’s test data.
