What is revival? A revival is defined in the dictionary as a reawakening of religious fervor,

especially by means of a series of evangelistic meetings. Who needs to be awakened? We all

do from time to time. True revival does not begin in the church, but with each one of us first

examining ourselves. I believe our church is heading in the right direction and I want us to

have a passion to want for our church what Jesus would want for the church. John Wesley

said about those called Methodist, ‘I am not afraid that the people called Methodists should

ever cease to exist either in Europe or America. But I am afraid lest they should only exist as

a dead sect, having the form of religion without the power. And this undoubtedly will be the

case unless they hold fast both the doctrine, spirit, and discipline with which they first set

out.’ It is time we become a movement of God again. Come for these four days of Revival

and allow our evangelist to stoke the fire in you. Each night there will be a covered dish

dinner at 6:00 pm. Revival will start promptly at 7:00 pm.

Just as revival brings about change in our personal lives it will also bring about change in a

church. Change is coming to Heritage United Methodist Church in 2018. One of the

churches mission and reason for being planted in its current location was to reach the people

serving at Fort Rucker. If we are going to continue with that mission we are going to have to

change the way we currently do ministry. The new generation of people is called millennials.

This is one of the most lost generations we will ever encounter and we will lose them all if

the church does not change the way we currently reach out to people. One change we are

currently making is the name of our church. Our Church Council voted to change our name

to just Heritage. One thing that this new generation fears or is turned off by is institutions and

a denomination to them is an institution. I am currently reading a book about this soon to be

lost generation trying to find ways we can reach out to them. We currently have a vision team

that is hard at work casting vision for our church. At the beginning of next year Sunday nights

will be full of AWANA children running around our church learning about God’s Word and

playing games. Wednesday night will be a time for Small Group Ministry as we begin with

four small group options to choose from.

As our Vision Committee continues to meet to cast vision for our church I need four volun-

teers who do not mind reading, to help us by reading four church growth books and bring

what they gleaned from the books to our vision committee. You do not need to be on the

Vision Committee to participate in this. The books are:

What Where When

Thankfulness. In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with messages like “If you just had _____ , you’d be happy/fulfilled/successful/at peace/etc.,” thankfulness is not a state of mind most of us default to for a reason. These messages make us believe that we lack something, [a product or thing, a job, a grade, a relationship (or better relationship) with someone, a victory over someone who wronged us/a rival person or team, etc.] to achieve these treasured emotional states. This belief then fuels a drive to, under our own strength and skewed wisdom, acquire more and more of these things and statuses in life as we attempt to achieve what we believe to be happiness, peace, and fulfillment, but the rampant feelings of discontent, emptiness, failure, and unrest in our culture clearly indicate this type of thinking must be all promises and no pay off.

Sadly many Christians, a group called and empowered by God to be continually thankful in every situation we encounter, seem to be routinely discontent and unhappy as well, because, alongside the rest of the world, we’ve unintentionally let these messages of “you need more” become our life’s guiding principle and path to “fulfillment.” As a result, so many of us are missing out on the peace, joy, and life to the full our loving Savior promises!

As Christ modeled for us (and the Bible clearly states), the key to achieving a truly fulfilled and joyous life is a close, everyday relationship with Him while intentionally choosing to be thankful for, and focus on, the thousands of God given blessings in our lives right now --no matter how we may feel in any given moment--instead of being con-sumed by what we don’t have!

Knowing that spiritual traps are being set by the world, remember to always search for truth, and continually analyze whether you spend most of your time upset and focusing on the negative (what you don’t have/feel you deserve and the things you feel are wrong in life) or focusing on the positive and thanking God for the outpouring of blessings He’s already given you! Your attitude directly relates to your degree of gratitude!

Don’t just take my word for it:

"We would worry less if we praised more. Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction."

- Harry Ironside

“It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.” –Charles Spurgeon

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ

Jesus." -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

“Thanksgiving will draw our hearts out to God and keep us engaged with Him; it will take our attention from

ourselves and give the Spirit room in our hearts." - Andrew Murra

"The unthankful heart discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the

magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings!" - Henry Ward Beecher

Heritage United Methodist Church

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to

prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

(NIV Jeremiah 29:11)

Sunday School, or Sunday morning Bible study, provides Bible lessons beginning with our little ones

in the nursery through our senior adults. Each class is designed to help us grow in our understanding

of the Bible and how to apply it to our everyday lives.

WINGS of FAITH (All ages) Class for Bible Study, with a special focus on the daily stress we face in everyday life.

Emphasis is to bring us together as a church family so that we not only react to problems but anticipate one another's needs.

Anticipate bringing in guest speakers/programs which will assist in enhancing our quality of life. All conversation shared in this

group will be considered confidential! No age restriction. Join us upstairs, last room on the right, in the Education Building.

Leader: Mila Goodson.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS: (All adults) Teaching in the book of II Timothy. Relevant and timely Bible

lessons that speak to the concerns and issues facing Christians in these days. Open discussion format where participation is

encouraged. Join us upstairs in the Education Building. Leader: Brother Kevin.

LAMPLIGHTERS: (All ages) Over the next three months, we are going to be considering the major covenants that God

made with his chosen people. In November, we will examine God's divine promise to Israel through the prophet Jeremiah for a new

covenant. God seals this new covenant of pure grace through Christ and by writing the law in the hearts of God's people.

Leader is Roy Eason.

WOMEN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS: (All women) Woman's Sunday School class is growing and we are having

awesome discussion about God's Word every Sunday. Woman studying, sharing, praying and encouraging one another. All ages of

woman are invited. There are no other requirements. Come see what it's all about!!! Hope to see you soon!!! Contact Anita Jones

at 334-464-3476 if you want more information.

YOUNG MARRIED COUPLES: (Open to all couples) Finding relevance and truth in God's word.

Leaders, Steve & Angie Parker.

ABLAZE STUDENT MINISTRY SUNDAY SCHOOL: (7th thru 12th graders) We focus on the many

awesome attributes of our holy, loving, Trinitarian God revealed in scripture, and discuss, through scouring the Bible and practical

application, how insanely life changing letting Him be your heart's main desire each and every day can be! We also discuss liturgi-

cal (the church calendar), global, local, and personal events as they occur and are laid on our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Talking about

their significance for us as followers of God, and the church as a whole, in light of the Bible is truly an enlightening and humbling

experience! We would love for you to come join us in the Chapel. Leader, Jamie Farquhar.

CHILDREN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL: (Kindergarten thru 6th graders) We are using the DEEP BLUE Sunday School

Series where kids dive deep into the Bible. Through Bible stories, games, puzzles, and Bible Study, kids will learn how to live as

disciples of Jesus. Join us downstairs in the Education Building. Leader, Shannon Nelson.

CHILDREN'S CHURCH (11:15 am): (4 years thru 3rd graders) Children join us each Sunday in Children's

Church for an interesting Bible Study and some fun and exciting follow-on activities. Children will go to Children's Church after

Praise and Worship. See Shannon to become a Children’s Church Volunteer.

NURSERY AND PRESCHOOL: (Crib Babies, Toddlers up to 4 years old) A loving, safe, and age-appropriate

environment welcomes your young children into our church family. Your child will receive lots of TLC by our CPR certified staff

and volunteers. This is a wonderful opportunity for your little ones to socialize and bond with other chil-

dren while hearing biblical stories and seeing Bible characters. Nursery is located on the first floor, Edu-

cation Building. Leader, Nikki Hagler.

quarter!!!

Classes meet each Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and is open to everyone!
