Areas of LearningWe will explore a range of fairy tales, focusing on “heroes” and “villains”.We will explore what makes a character a “hero” or a “villain”.As scientists we will investigate the strength of materials, and why objects float or sink.As mathematicians we will develop our knowledge and understanding of measures, and compare these.

Confident Individuals Responsible Citizens

Enterprise KUW Spiritual and Moral Communities

As enterprising individuals we will advertise the school’s Christmas play. We will also create small class performances to show others, and sell tickets for these.

As discoverers we will investigate which materials are stronger, and explore hot and cold. We will also explore floating and sinking, trying to answer the question: why do things float?

In our spiritual and moral development we will look at “hero” and “villain” stories from the Bible, and reflect on these. We will also look at the Christmas story.

We will look at the environment we live in and how to take care of it. We will invite parents and the local community to share the work we have done in our performance.

Essentials for Learning and Life Areas of Learning

Using Communication Attitudes- Learning to Learn Historical, geographical and social understanding

Reading and sharing books.Predicting story endings.Using the role play area to retell stories and make up our own stories.Group and class discussions about heroes and villains, and right and wrong.Sequencing stories.Writing captions and alternative endings.Character descriptions

ReflectiveI discuss my learning, and listen and act on advice about what to do to develop this further.I can give reasons for what I think.RelationshipsI initiate conversations and take account of what others say. When reminded, I change my behaviour to suit different roles and situations.I am beginning to understand that my actions affect other people.ResilienceI carry out an activity for the satisfaction of having created or learned something.I recognise my achievements in some areas.I keep focused, and sustain my attention.ResourcefulI respond to imaginative ideas.I make connections through play and experimentation.Risk TakingI am beginning to be able to negotiate and solve problems.I try to remain patient if solutions are not readily at hand.

Mapping the journeys that the stories make.Looking at our local environment and how we can take care of it.Talk about promises and why we make them.Talk about memories they have of their family.Talk about their “happy thoughts”.Attempt to look at a story from another characters point of view – does your opinion of them change? Why?

Scientific and Technological understanding

Using Mathematics Exploring hot and cold.Test the strength of different materials, deciding which material is best to make a bag.Design, make and evaluate a bag.Build structures using straw, wood, brick, etc. – test which is stronger against different weather conditions (“wind”, “rain”)Investigating floating and sinking – Why do things float?Finding out about nocturnal animals – where do they live? What do they eat?

Measuring, comparing and ordering length, height, distance and mass.Build structures – (which is the best shape to use when building?)Recognising shapes and their properties.Sorting into a Venn diagram.Telling the time – ‘o’ clock and half hour.Giving and following instructions using mathematical vocabulary.Money problems.

Understanding the arts

Making character puppets, which can then be used to retell the story.Creating music to accompany the stories we read.Exploring mark making with a wide range of tools and techniques.Looking at how we can use different materials and techniques to create images to represent our ideasSinging a range of rhymes and songs.Explores making and construction.

Using ICT

Using different programmes on the interactive whiteboard.Using the Tablets – exploring their uses and using different applications. The Hour of Code game – coding.Researching wolves and nocturnal animals.Draw characters using Paint.
