1 Hermes, 4 (issue about The spiritual Master in the major traditions in East and West ) has
published an article by Mr. André Scrima, entitled The tradition of the spiritual Father in the
Eastern Church. We wish to point out a documentary element of some interest in it regarding the
actual studies about Hesychasm. After having spoken, at last, about the line of the startzy of
Optino (central Russia) which goes back to the Hesychast renovator, established in Moldavia,
Paissy Velitchkowski (1722-1794), the author, Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Patriarchate,
himself connected, apparently, to Hesychasm, says in conclusion of his text:
“This is to another spiritual Father, from the line of the staretz Paissy, very close to
our time (he died in October 1946), that we are going to ask for the final word. With
the same humble and limpid consciousness particular to spiritual people, Father John,
“the foreign pilgrim”, addressed, shortly before his disappearance, to his spiritual
sons in Romania a letter (unpublished) which, even though it contains his will, still
explains why there should not be, in this domain, any “last word”; here are the final
lines:”
We interrupt here the quotation to give some explanations. We already knew somewhat
ourselves, from other sources, the story of this monk who arrived unknown to Romania from
Russia during the last war, lived several years in the Romanian monastic underworld before
returning to his country to die there; according to some more complete references, he designated
himself and insisted on being designated, among his people, by the epithet of “foreign Pilgrim” or
also “John the Foreigner” or in short “the Foreigner”. Certainly, there was in this name a title
related to an initiatory category, and one will refer about this point to what Guénon wrote on the
epithets of “traveler” and “foreigner” which are the two meanings of the term peregrinus from
which “pilgrim” comes, as well as the particular connection that the symbolism of the “travel”
has with the Compagnonnage1
.
1 Etudes sur la Franc -Maçonnerie et le Compagnonnage, vol. I, p. 52 : A propos des pèlerinages[Studies about Freemasonry and Compagnonnage : About pilgrimages].
It is naturally in that traditional perspective that also belongs the document entitled Le s ré ci ts d' un pè le rinrusse [Tales of a Russian pilgrim], first published in Russia in Khazan around 1865 and known in French
particu larly since J . Gauvin’s tr anslation was published in 1943 in Neuchâtel.

Hesychasm (I)
We reproduce now the fragment of letter announced by the text of Mr. Scrima:
“…This is how the Lord gave me the gift of what is called “the charismatic
Tradition of the spiritual inheritance”, and the gift of the grace to conduct the
souls towards salvation.
“By looking behind me to contemplate the journey covered, I, the pilgrim who
has been marching for 64 years on the paths of that life, I acknowledge that theLord, since the beginning, has been willing enough to pour in my young heart the
invincible flame of his Love.
“I bless Him, for He was eager to fill my inner life and to fulfill it with his
ineffable mercy. I humiliated myself in front of the fullness of his gifts which
exceed all the terrestrial beauties and that neither the world, nor the human
intelligence can penetrate.
“I bless Him for, since I was born, He carried me with his mysterious ways to
the inexhaustible source from where the grace gushes in abounding streams and
that the ancient Fathers kept in the hermitages, the mountains and the corners
hidden to the eyes of the world.
“Yes, I bless the Lord who, as I was reaching my mature age, melted together in
the crucible of my young heart that abundance of graces from whom I live and
which still renews me today. Despite the sufferings and the tortuous trails of my
existence, He made sure this treasure was not lost; He kept it and took care of it
so that it did not diminish. Even, to speak with spiritual audacity, I can testify
that I, too, as humble and unworthy as I am, I did share with all those who
searched for it, in truth, the grace that was given to me.
“Yes, it is Him only, the Lord, who has always given Himself for sharing to all
the pilgrims of our worldly pilgrimage, who made them come unto Him through
the very trails of their daily life to quench their spiritual thirst.
“However, the thirst of the Spirit cannot be appeased and nothing could fulfill it.
And the more His grace is poured into the soul, the more it increases its capacity
and fills it. Such is the case, in truth.“God’s mercy and the Grace of our Lord Jesus-Christ be with you all. Amen!”
Knowing ourselves the integral text of that letter in its Romanian version (the original is in
Russian and we do not own it), we shall add a few useful remarks about that French translation.
First of all the first reproduced sentence, which would have needed, anyway, a few clarifications,
could be more exactly nuanced the following way: “This is how the Lord granted me what is
called “the placing in possession, by act of grace, of a spiritual legacy” (inminarea harica a uneimosteniri duhovnicesti)2, as well as the charge of conducting the souls of men to the salute
( precum si incredintarea conducerii spre mtntuire a sufletelor oamenilor )”. One will notice, first
of all, that the Romanian text mentions “a spiritual legacy” in an undetermined manner, and not
“the” spiritual legacy”, because there is not only one type of spiritual legacy. The “charge of
conducting the souls of men” mentioned afterwards, appears as a different thing, even though
apparently conditioned by the existence of the received legacy.
2 The Romanian term inminarea (etymologically “placing in hand”, from the Latin in manu) means “the fact ofhanding something over to someone”.

Hesychasm (I)
In the second paragraph, it is not without interest that we reproduce an incidental mention that
does not appear in the French translation; according to the Romanian version the Father John
says: “… I see how the Lord was hastening since the beginning, through his act of divine election
( prin alegerea sa dumnezeiasca), to pour into my young heart an invincible love of fire for Him.”
In the fourth paragraph, where it is question of his access to the “inexhaustible source” and where
– according to the Romanian version – one must read the plural, “to the inexhaustible sources” ofthe grace, one wonders if there is here the indication of an event of exclusively “inner” mode and
if there is also an allusion to an outer step and to a subsequent discovery. The mention of
“mysterious ways” in which the pilgrim was “carried” to the said sources, then the given
precision that those sources were the ones “that the ancient Fathers kept in the hermitage3, the
mountains and the hidden corners”, allow such a meaning, all the more as the reference to the
guarding by the “ancient” Fathers implies that, for some time already, the “sources” were not
located at the old “places”, and that they should be necessarily found even more outside of a
world where they had neither their past supports, not the keepers like in the past. The notion of
spiritual centers directing the traditional forms, the notion of the possibilities of their “retreat” or
of their “emigration” more or less faraway (either towards “neighbor” spiritual centers, or
towards the Supreme Center from whom all the particular centers precede originally) as well as
the notion of their possible “re-manifestation” at some favorable time in the traditional cycle, in
the domain of the respective traditions, these notions that we got from the initiatory teaching of
René Guénon can make one understand what are the elements of an institutional and more
technical character, elements which must underlie some events and spiritual developments like
the ones whom I talked about in an allusive manner in this letter.
At the end of the fifth paragraph and in the sixth one, the Pilgrim, while affirming the
transmissions of spiritual graces done by his ministry, takes the precaution, which is moreover of
style in such matter, to say that the effective power does not belong to him, but to the Lord. At
the occasion, since some people, like Mr. Marco Pallis (see Le Voile du Temple, E.T., nov.-dec.
1964, pp. 265-266 ), starting with the notion that the Christ is the principle of any spiritual
operation, believe they can consider the absence, in Christianism, of any initiatory transmission
through the intermediary of masters (gerontes, staretz, etc.), we can make them remark that, in
fact, things happen in a way, shall we say, completely normal...
The signature of the letter says: “John, the foreign Father”, one more variant to his epithet.
3 The word in the Romanian text for “hermitage” is sihastrii adaptation from the Greek hesychasteria (in thesame way in Romanian sihastru = “hermit” comes from the Greek hesychastos).

renouvelle aujourd'hui encore.

8/12/2019 Hesychasm Mihai Valsan
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/hesychasm-mihai-valsan 6/36
A l'occasion,
puisque certains, comme M. Marco Pallis (Voir Le Voile du Temple, E.T., nov.-dec. 1964, pp.

Hesychasm (II)
Michel V ÂLSAN
(followed by the French version)
Finally, in order to stress again the interest of the initiatory document that this letter represents,
we shall quote a characteristic passage that can be found in the part not published by Mr. Scrima:
“Since I’ve been a young man, the divine work of the Providence has been
benevolent with respect to my heart, and, on the path to my salvation, offered me the
blessing of grace given by inheritance. It also offered me a spiritual guide (living) in
grace, who enjoyed a great inner life. Then God offered me, directly, His support of
grace, with a lot of wisdom and steadfastness on the road of my spiritual
peregrination.”
Visibly one can find here the successive stating of three different facts, which occurred distinctly
in the career of the “foreign Pilgrim”: an initial “blessing of grace”, that can be understood as the
first linking up to the Hesychast way1. Then comes the mention of an authentic spiritual guide
who seems to have to be taken into account at a different moment than when the initial “blessing”
occurred. Finally, there is mention of a direct divine intervention, event that is expressed in terms
sounding like a confirmation. In spite of the use of hasty formulations, we have here, without anydoubt, some facts that are characteristic of an initiatory way.
Finally, it is not negligible to find in another sentence of the not published part of the letter the
following mention: “Happy the ones who do not doubt me, your poor father and confessor 2, who
happens to be a foreigner sent…” According to this we understand that Father John had acted,
particularly through his trip to Romania, according to a very precise functional orientation,
despite the external appearances.
We shall also specify, under that circumstance, that we have recently received from the Romanian
religious community where the Father John lived during the war, some teachings that confirm
what we have sustained on the subject of the Hesychast fastening rite in our articles on the
question of the Christian initiation. Thus on the subject of the introductory “blessing” (in
Romanian binecuvintarea) in the Hesychast practice, one of our recent correspondents, formeruniversity professor in Bucharest, recently wrote us the following: “I have been initiated – or as
1 The expression “given by inheritance” certainly means that the respective “blessing” is not an actaccomplished by the “benissor” as a person, for example because of his own sanctity, but as a functional
title, in relation with an entity instituted and transmitted by inheritance.2 The Romanian word here is duhovnic (of Slavonic origin) which, except the special meaning of
“confessor”, has itself the meaning of “spiritual father” (in Slavonic and in Romanian duh = “spirit”).
8/12/2019 Hesychasm Mihai Valsan
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/hesychasm-mihai-valsan 8/36
Hesychasm (II)
we say in Hesychast speech – I have received the “blessing” from a disciple of the Father John3.
The Athonite Hesychasm suffered in the new Athos4 a Russian reshuffle. The (very authorized)
person I talked to could not tell me up to what level that reshuffle went; that person only got from
the Father John that in the Hesychast discipline there are 7 spiritual steps that correspond to the 7
evangelical mysteries, and that in each of these steps the “pilgrim” receives a “blessing”, in other
words an initiation.”
In a subsequent letter, the same correspondent specified the following after consultation with a
direct disciple of the Father John, who is moreover at an important position in the ecclesiastical
hierarchy: “Regarding the power of transmitting the “benediction” in matters of the prayer of the
mind (rugaciunea mintii), the Father B. is categorical: only those who receive a special
delegation, through a special rite can transmit the prayer.” The same Father B. considers also “as
unquestionable the initiatory character of the Hesychast blessing”.
What we are thus registering, in this rubric, may be added to the record of discussions that are
still in place on the other hand regarding the Christian initiation.
II
From the several quotations we gave above, it results that in the centers in question the
introductory blessing to the Hesychast practice is presented as an initiation. A testimony going in
that direction, we noticed it in a study published already ten years ago in Istina (3 and 4, 1958,
Boulogne-sur-Seine), entitled L'avènement philocalique dans I'Orthodoxie roumaine [The
Philokalic arrival in the Romanian Orthodoxy] and displaying instead of a signature the
indication “A monk from the orthodox church of Romania”. Mr. Scrima, by a mention of the
article published in Hermes5, acknowledges everyone know that he is himself the author of the
study, and as there are furthermore in the respective pages some data that can be usefully brought
up here, because they are in direct relationship with the document that we just commented, we
shall reproduce the parts that interest us more especially. At the same time, we will have to makea few critical remarks and some clarifications6. Moreover, this is because of the context of these
data which is open to criticism and because of the complexity of a satisfactory development thatwould have been necessary at the occasion, that we did not want to resort to this testimony when
we wrote our answer to Mr. Pallis entitled L'Initiation chrétienne [The Christian Initiation] (E.T.
nos 389-390, May-June and July-August 1965).
We shall specify first that the object of the article published by Istina was to point out and set,
historically and spiritually, the event that constituted the appearance, in the years 1946-1948, of
the first 4 volumes of Romanian Philokalia with good accompanying notes, as well as the
3 We notice, here as well, that the introductory blessing in the Hesychast practice is considered as an
“initiation”.4 Epithet of Optino; the reshuffle which is mentioned is related to the work of the renovator Paissy and of
the Startzjj at the end of the 18th century.5 See Hermes, 4, p. 88, note 1.6 In reality the work in question would deserve a complete examination; we may come back, in another
occasion, on the other aspects that interest us, unless it happens at the occasion of the publication of thegeneric book that Mr. Scrima announces with the title Thèmes et structures en spiritualité comparée
[Themes and structures in compared spirituality], and where, it seems, the matter of this older work
should be covered.

spiritual, and more exactly Hesychast, renewal, that this publication came with and supported;
“The Romanian Philokalic birth is set, wrote the Monk, at the point of convergence of a
proclamation of the written testimony and of the renewal of the life of prayer: that same
“coincidence” is the sign of its authenticity. In the forties, some circles where laic individuals
were meeting with monks, resuscitated, at the light of the teachings of the Fathers, the quest for
the Prayer of the Heart until the day when was received the blessing coming for the lineage of the
staretz Paissie7. The moment of plenitude was reached once again.” The allusion, everyone willunderstand it, concerned the appearance of Father “John the Foreigner” who brought the
Hesychast path in that community.
It is by defining the role of the Philokalic “corpus” in the life of the Church and of the monastic
order that the author is led to specify the notions specific to Hesychasm we are interested in.
We are anxious to point out from the beginning the notion of a clear reserve observed in the
orthodox world, as to the study or to the simple public account of the components of the
Hesychast “tradition”, and more especially of what concerns the technical aspect of that path,
matters that stood out at an order more or less esoteric, and that we can moreover qualify as
properly initiatory. The author refrains from wanting to transgress himself this rule of suitability,
but he is however led to give, in the course of his report, a few unpublished specifications which
seem to us, after all, rather welcome, in spite of the less successful remarks that sometimes comewith them.
Here is first of all a passage that deals with the principial question about the existence of a
“Christian esotericism”:
“One is normally stricken by the unusual “technical” character of the Philokalic
teaching and of the Hesychast practice: an “unfavorable judgment, carried in the
name of the western mystic, which is structured differently, always seems justified
(?). It is a question of an undeniable traditional transmission; isn’t it here an unhoped-
for occasion (!), for the representatives of modern traditionalism (sic), to receive a
brilliant confirmation from the very heart of Christianity, that “religion” impervious
to any esoteric truth? The Philokalic tradition is not without an evident element of
mystery (name given in the Orthodox Church not only to the sacraments, but also tocertain hierurgies as well as to the spiritual experience seen from its theandric depth):
this also brings to mind, through a predisposed perspective, besides the notion of
“Christian esotericism”, the affinity, if not the equivalence, with the Far-Eastern
spiritual techniques (sic): which does not fail to raise new questions” (pp. 296-297).
We shall keep from this passage the mention of a difference in between “Hesychasm” and
“western mystic”, due to the “technical character” of the first one which will recall certain
remarks from René Guénon8; and it is interesting to notice that the expression “western
mystic” is understood in a Guenonian sense; we shall find moreover other mentions
further in the text that constitute an implicit reference to the traditional doctrine as it was
formulated by Guénon, even though his name was never mentioned. Next we shall point
out for a first time the affirmation that in the case of Hesychasm there is an “undeniable
traditional transmission”; the allusions, to tell the truth somewhat awkward in their terms, that come after, reassure us, if we needed it, that the author intends to confirm Guénon’s
thesis about the Christian initiation. But then why talk about “modern traditionalism”,
borrowing in this way the language of those who do not understand the genuine traditional

point of view which is plainly anti-modern? 9 To tell the truth, in these conditions, we do
not even see anymore how this could be a “brilliant confirmation” since that confirmation
would be given to the representatives of a doctrinal position that would then be pseudo-
traditional.
9 To express all our thoughts about this subject, it appears to us that the author who gave his text (the first
one he was going to publish in France) to a Catholic publication wanted in this way offer some
guarantees of independence in relation to Guénon’s doctrinal authority; however even the way of doing it
is not very fortunate.

Michel V ALSAN
confesseur 2, qui me trouve étranger envoyé...

(followed by the French version)
On the contrary, since on the subject of Hesychasm Guénon’s point of view and of the
one of those who follow him coincides after all with the point of view of the orthodox
spirituality (the questions of formulation should not make any insurmountable
difficulty) 1, it was perfectly logical to hope that some additional evidences would
come, sooner or later, from one side or another, to be added to the ones that we already
knew from some sources and thus to further confirm in the case of Christianity the
existence of a basic constitution, considered by everyone as “normal”, relatively to the
nature and the technical means of the true initiation; in this respect, when the author
wants to talk about “affinity if not equivalence” with other eastern traditional forms, he
commits a lapsus calami (which will be repeated further in his article) by using the
attribute “far-eastern”, because we realize that he thinks then about India. What is also
certain is that Christianity as a tradition itself, although in a religious form, would be
considered as “resistant” to any esoteric truth only by those who have a strictly exoteric
mind 2, as for example the Catholic theologians – especially neo-thomists, but many others as
well – who fought the initiatory thesis of Guénon and contested the existence of a “Christian
esoterism”.
The following passage will help us better define the notion of the “incontestable
transmission” we just talked about:
“To start with, it is necessary to acknowledge that we are dealing with a
“tradition”. The spiritual life has always been conceived in the Eastern Church
as a living transmission, a paradosis, conveying the incarnate Spirit throughout
history. As obvious as it may sound, there is however no place here for a conflict
of importance with the Tradition of the Church, nor for a distinction of nature with
it. The breath of the same Holy Spirit lights the fire of the Prayer of the heart
and keeps it burning within the Church; in a position of interiority, it is true,
but precisely because of thi s, it does not allow any esoteric depreciation (sic)
1 We summarized this point of view in our article “L'initiation chrétienne — Réponse à M. Marco
Pallis” [Christian initiation – Answer to Mr. Marco Pallis] published in Etudes Traditionnelles of
May-June and July-August 1965; the thesis of Guénon about Hesychasm is reported in it in pages
178-181.2 As for the verbal objections that a superficial reader could formulate with regard to Guénon’s thesis, they
are being contradicted by the basic affirmations contained in the quotes that we have gathered pages 160-
161 of our 1965 article already mentioned.

of the spiritual life realized through other forms. (We shall say that if a
mystery is not a secret, it is particularly true for the Christian mystery,
continuing the very condition of the Incarnate God, at the same time
offered in his plenitude to everyone and invisible for those who cannot see
him. One is, essentially, in a different universe than the one of the esoteric
doctrine, protecting, by a secret initiation, its “universal truth” against the
psychic and the hylic people. The dis tinction, itself external, between esotericand exoteric, does not make any sense here, as it is not about a hidden
continuation denying the times of a sacred past anymore, but instead about acontinuation of a Presence, at every moment creative and invigorating, - one
would say a contemporaneity of the Spirit. It seems appropriate to discern, in
this sense, between the tradition of the Church and the other traditional
forms, in progress of artificial reanimation at the present time)” (pp. 300-
301).
We shall keep from this passage, as something positive on the initiatory aspect, this notion
of the “tradition”, and also the meaning of the word paradosis which it translates, because
in reality none of these terms were ordinarily in use in the sense emphasized here. In any
case, we would not make a difficulty regarding this point. One will also perfectly understand
the concern of the author not to dissociate the Spirit from the integral tradition or not to
oppose the operative forms, but to affirm, on the other hand, the organic cohesion of the
Hesychast tradition with the Tradition of the Church. And as for us, we conceive this all the
more easily as we know that the situation is the same in the other traditions with a religious
form, or monotheistic: we do not conceive differently the Taçawwuf in the Din of Islam,
nor the Kabbalah in Judaism. But of course, one could not use the same unifying
and totalizing formulas anymore if we considered more especially the technical
means and the practical modalities of Hesychasm, because then the spirit specific
to the initiatory path derived from the total Spirit would have to appear with its
own characters which cannot be confused with the other specifications of the
Spirit 3.
Concerning the Christian mystery “which is not a secret”, the author has thus inview essentially the mystery of Faith, in other words the fundamental revelation of
a common credo, “symbol” without which there is no religion, whether it concerns
Christianity or any other tradition with religious form, and upon which are later
founded the doctrinal forms, the sacred institutions, as well as the rites and all the
acts of the traditional life. As for the mention that in this case “one is essentially
in a different universe than the one of the esoteric doctrine protecting by a
secret initiation its “essential truth” against the psychic and hylic people”, it
shows first of all that the author opposes here Christianity with the ancient
initiatory forms of the Greco-Roman world, to which one can add some western
extensions, secondly that he only considers the most external aspects of
3 In order to be well understood, we will take an example in the ordinary sacramentary domain. The One
Spirit intervenes and operates in each of the sacraments with a particular form and a particularvirtue which are not interchangeable with the ones of other sacraments. The situation is similar a
fortiori when it concerns a domain even more particular like, for example, the one of the
“blessing” technically instituted for the Hesychast practice or, to better say, for different
degrees of this practice. (See especially what we reported above on the subject of the 7 “blessings”
corresponding to a septenary hierarchy of initiatory conditions). We already made some allusions to thiscoherent and hierarchical multiplicity of forms of the Spirit in a single tradition, in the 1965 articles, pp.
152-153, 176-177 and finally 183-184.

Christianity itself, aspects which are recognizable by all the community and
which coincide in fact with what we usually call exoterism 4. This situation is
therefore comparable to the one we notice in other traditions with religious form,
which are very much characterized by that constant organic link between the
institutions peculiar to the initiatory path and the ones of the common path, of whom
we have already previously talked about. Because, to be more explicit, in these
traditional forms, the initiatory paths appear in their own traditional context, as “paths of per fection” of the general religion and they are indeed necessarily as such, while being
also something more, something that counts even more than everything else: thus in theIslamic tradition the Taçawwuf is regularly reported to Ihsân (excellence in the Faith and
in the Submission to God) which is the 3 rd degree of Din (Religion) after the degrees of
Islam (Submission) and of Imân (Faith). But if the Hesychast, Kabbalist or mutaçawwif
initiate, on his special path, which consists in a corresponding spiritual influence, discipline
and method of work, accedes to higher degrees of the being, there is for him sanctification, transcendence, intuitive opening and access to mysteries which cannot be understood by
others nor inconsiderately divulged, and then the difference with the “psychic ones” and
the “hylic ones” will happen automatically even if these people, either by charity or only by
prudence, are not expressly designated as such… - Also, indeed, there is a “Presence”
everywhere, but how many degrees however in this “Presence” which is the one of the total possibility! There is no point in simplifying and in generalizing for some apologetic needs,
because then we take the risk of removing the reason of being of the Hesychast path in the
whole Christian Tradition.
4 One will find on the other hand that what we think should be understood more exactly by this term.

Etudes et documents d'Hésychasme (III)
Michel V ALSAN
Saint qui allume le feu de la Prière du cœur et le garde brûlant dans l’Eglise ;

On

Hesychasm (IV)
Michel V ÂLSAN
(followed by the French version)
Let us point out that what has been said here, where a “hidden and time denying continuation” is
opposed to the “contemporaneity of the Spirit”, is incomprehensible in this vague formulation; we
will have to leave this point for the moment, without adding more, and go back to it when we find
some more explicit notes later on about the same subject. Finally, if it is about asserting an
advantage for the “Tradition of the Church” in relation with a traditional form “in progress of
artificial reanimation at the present time” – which could only target, to tell the truth, some
pseudo-traditional attempts – why put in the same category, and even without any restriction, “all
the other traditional forms”, as if it could offer some semblance of truth, and even, as if the author
was personally capable of knowing the spiritual and esoterical realities of the whole traditional
world. This lack of sense of proportions is nonetheless unexpected. There is here, actually, an
obvious inconsistency: if in the other traditional forms we have reached the state of extinction
suggested in his words, the actual world as a whole would be already terminated; because this is
certainly not a reanimation like the one – authentic without a doubt, but nonetheless very modest
– of the recent Hesychast awakening of Rumania which could have pushed back the coming of a
catastrophe that became by that time inexorable. Moreover the initiatory revivals, or more
generally speaking the traditional revivals – and we are in the domain of any traditional form that
is weakened and deficient – are only themselves possible because the forces of Tradition in
general are still alive and active; in such a case, there is even a conjunction of interventions or
influences emanating from other traditional forms interested by a similar recovery, as we have
mentioned it in many occasions1, in such a way that the Philocalic arrival and the parallel
1 See, lastly, E.T. Jan.-Feb. 1968, pp. 33-34. — We shall remind also, as an example, what Guénon noted
on the subject of the Islamic influences in Occident among the Knighthood Orders, as well as in the case
of Dante and later on the Rosicrucianism (See The Esoterism of Dante); also on the subject of the judaic
origin of the esoterism of the Elus Coens founded by Martines of Pasqually in the 18th century. —
Regarding Judaism, the Romanian Monk noticed himself the case of the Hasidism “contemporary with
the Paissian Hesychasm originating from the same Ukrainian and Carpatho-Moldavian regions” (p. 31,note 35); except that it was then to immediately declare that “the discrete part that he is indebted to
Hesychasm should not be denied”; this influence is possible indeed, but one will have to show it as such. But what is invaluable is that the author admits such influences, and he even admits in principle that they
can also play an opposite direction, when he adds: “in the intensive fermentation of time and space, the
osmoses and spontaneous intercommunications kept occurring”. But since, on that subject, the author
talks about “osmoses” and “spontaneous intercommunications”, which rather corresponds to a naturalist
and sociological conception of things, one must add that when the influences are some authentic
initiatory facts, they do not occur as simple human facts, because of the local contiguities and the socialmixes, but as factors of an providential economy of the realities.

Hesychasm (IV)
Hesychastic renewal of the Romanian countries might have been favored, in any form, openly or
subtly, closely or from a distance, and despite some appearances, with the assistance of traditional
factors from foreign origin and not necessarily of a specific Christian form. The simple fact that
the work of Guénon is fairly known in the Romanian intellectual milieu (it had already started a
few years before 1940) and nowadays by a complete generation of new Hesychasts, is quite
significant2.
The passage which follows immediately the one we just commented, concerns the initiatory
transmission in its modality and its meaning:
“We must, however, go deeper and acknowledge this Spirit as the spirit of filiation.
The life of prayer (and this is the second fact we would like to emphasize) is born
within the heart by the blessing of the Abbot, of the spiritual Father who is not only
the master (praeceptor) but literally the one who gives birth (non ex sanguinibus,
neque ex voluntate carnis, neque ex voluntate viri, sed ex Deo) to a new being in
Christ, at the same time the Son and Our Father. The light of the baptism is thus
“awakened” and carried to its fullness, that is to say towards the normal end of the
Christian life that the Eastern tradition likes to call deification. The way of Hesychia
leads to it, and the instant of the blessing by the Father opens it, straight and winged,
by pushing aside the dangers, the illusions and the aberrations emerging from thedark. (One cannot prevent oneself from considering in this perspective, once again,
the initiation which gives access to the secret reality in the classical traditional forms
like the void of the blessing or the ignorance of the paternity, which obliges it to tie
itself inevitably to the impersonal cycle of an obscure truth and to stop at it.
Everything holds together in this order of facts)” (p. 301).
In spite of a style that risks harming the clarity of the notions, one will isolate as positive
information the indication that the way of the Hesychia is opened by the blessing of the spiritual
Father; however, when it is added that he “gives birth” (of course ex Deo) to a new being, this
does not concern the initial act anymore, which only represented the “conception” of this being,
but the “childbirth” itself, that is to say the accomplished work.
Indeed, it is said moreover that this blessing produces the “awakening” of the baptismal light (the
one of the orthodox baptism which concludes the “confirmation”); nevertheless the blessing of
the Father operates in that case a “transmission”: the one of “a spirit of filiation”. Such is the
Hesychast control and it is all in all comparable, according to what everyone knows, with the
initiation in the Taçawwuf , with, in this last case, the particularity, that the isnād (institutional
basis) of this one goes back explicitly and without interruption through the chain of the chuyūkh
(sing., chaykh equivalent to « old man » or « staretz ») down to the Prophet who is the initiator of
the respective path on the human level.
In the parenthesis that concludes this passage, the author, continuing his apologetic views, ends
up considering the initiation in its “classical” traditional forms as “the void of the blessing or the
ignorance of the paternity”. The qualifier “classical” is not really accurate, but we understand thatit relates, in any case, to the antique initiations, some of whom might have moreover continued to
exist long enough in parallel with the cycle of Christian initiation. But as we know, here as well,
there was a “transmission”, whatever the modalities and designations were, and a way with a
2 It is also very remarkable that, despite the known historical conditions, the study of René Guénon’s work
did nothing but develop in the Romanian region. One of our recent correspondent, Guenonian ofHesychast filiation, telling us about the Romanian readers of Guénon’s work, wrote us textually that their
“number goes beyond any supposition”, which is also in agreement with what we already knew.

“guide”, and since in any case, here as well, it was a question of institutions and divine
revelations and not of human interventions, the respective initiations (about whom to tell the truth
we know very little and especially about the period of their decadence) were certainly what they
were supposed to be for the corresponding traditional world, in order for the goal, essentially the
same, that is to say the knowledge either metaphysical, or cosmological, to be aimed at and
reached or at the least be approached. If the specific notions and the technical terms were
different this is because the traditional definitions of the realities and the sacred formsconsequently instituted, were different. But in the absolute, it is not forbidden to think that at the
initial and normal time of the said “classical” ways – whose antiquity must have often been prehistoric and not only pre-Christian – instead of the functional place of the “spiritual paternity”
of the Christian tradition, except the indispensable “guidance” or initiatory “mastership” (this
latter title being never limited to the exoteric meaning of praeceptor ), there were some modalities
of contact with the higher realities and some forms of initiatory direction so elevated that they
became with time out-of-date for a humanity which declined more and more qualitatively3. Whatcould mean under these conditions, the idea of the author that such initiatory paths might have
had for goal to connect to an “impersonal cycle” of an “obscure truth” near which “one would
stop”? Does he think then, that these initiatory paths considered in their normal condition, were
founded in an unspecified, awkward and ineffective way, when their founder was none other than
God, who as a legislator is the Wisdom itself? (Because, unless explicit evidence of the contraryis given, we are still supposing that the author is capable to understand the also divine origin of
the multiple forms that the Tradition assumed function of the times and of the areas of the world,
even though we shall never expect that he openly declares a Universalist profession of faith; it
will be enough for us not to find in his writings any inequitable or tendentious comparative
judgments)4. We prefer not to express further our disappointment about this point, all the more as
considerations of this kind do not change anything regarding the value of the positive information
that we isolated out the same text.
3 We can recall here by way of illustration that, in the ancient mysteries, theophany — the Presence above
all — was a regular operative fact. — The sacred history of the Arch of Covenant for the Israelites which
at the beginning was the support for a divine Presence visible day and night, and which lost more and
more of its effectiveness and of its importance, can give an idea of what the spiritual resources were in
the ancient times.4 Our remark is all the more appropriate that Mrg. Scrima, as we have already mentioned, is considering
publishing a book about “comparative spirituality”.

Hesychasm (V)
Michel V ÂLSAN
(followed by the French version)
Later on, the author summarizes his statements and formulates a few appreciations.
“Should we, therefore, see in the Hesychast tradition a tradition of the Arcane? We could notassert it without nuances; which is the same as saying that we could not deny it without nuances
either. The necessity of keeping a delicate balance in the appreciation comes, partly at least, from
the fact that the problem has been complicated for some time by various esoteristic
interpretations. We do not believe that these interpretations could be able to offer an authentic
light regarding the intelligence of the Hesychast spirituality (still in recognizing them the natural
quality of maintaining a general fermentation of the ideas), simply because they pertain to another
source than the latter. One should therefore set aside the points of view thus promoted and instead
look, if possible from inside, ab intra, at the concrete situation of Hesychasm in its own context.
What emerges then, as an essential element, is the fact that it is given inside the Tradition of the
Church ; not as another tradition, but as a tradition contained within the Tradition, the same way
as (to use an accurate image from Gregory Palamas) “the heart is the innermost body within the
body”. Or, more, the prayer of the Heart is the way of the contemplative life, the path alwaysidentical to itself and always new to travel through (which presupposes the transmission, the
initiation, or, under its best name, the benediction). In other words, the extension of the formal
structure of the tradition on the peculiar plane of the contemplative life (testimony of its monastic
nature prevailing in the Eastern Church) confers to it the steadiness, the discretion, the rigor of the
very sources of the spiritual life flowing inside the Church and distinguishes it from a “mystical
school”. And its access will be at the same time natural and opened, or difficult and dangerous,
according to whether the required moment will have come or not. It is not rare, indeed, to find
among the Neptic Fathers a warning concerning the approach of the mystery and the injunction to
prepare for it: under the apparent repetition of a norm generally well known, they discreetly
announce the entrance in the “Arcane” part of the considered text which will have to be
interpreted consequently. We would like to invoke as an example the wonderful Treaty of the
prayer , from Callistus the Patriarch, whose eighth chapter proclaims about the things that willfollow: No profane individual, no child still at the age of drinking milk should touch these
forbidden objects before it is time. “The Holy Fathers denounced the madness of those who
search things before their time and attempt to enter the port of apatheia without having the
wanted resources. The one who cannot read will be incapable of deciphering a book.” (pp. 446-
447).

Hesychasm (V)
The author therefore is hesitating as to the question of knowing whether the Hesychast tradition is
a “tradition of the Arcane” or not, and just because of the rather curious reason that “the problem
has been complicated for some time by various esoteristic interpretations.” Now, first of all, it
appears from this that there was indeed a “problem” regarding this subject before some esoteristic
interpretations, not defined here, came into play to “complicate” it; we would have liked to know
how this problem was brought up and formulated, how it was attempted to solve it and why it
remained a “problem”, apparently even for the followers of Hesychasm. This orthodox monk whoseeks before all to ensure the traditional autonomy of this initiatory way from the Eastern
Christianism, and who challenges in that effect the points of view and opinions which do notoriginate from the Hesychast medium itself, has here no other objective than to exclude the
esoteristic points of view, and yet does not say anything about the Catholic or even Orthodox
theological interpretations which might hold the responsibility for having made a “problem” out
of Hesychasm, if not for having also “solved” it in a deceiving way, to say the least.
By doing so, the author is sure he solves his problem himself. But the first statement that we can
make in this respect is that he is rendering it even more elusive, by employing here a very unusual
expression, which means nothing in itself, and which he does not explain either. Indeed first of all
he needs to explain what a “tradition of the Arcane” means if we want to be able to judge if it
applies to the case of Hesychasm! Because this is in relation to this notion that the “problem” of
Hesychasm is being presented here. However “Arcane” can mean several things, just like the
expression “initiatic secret” studied by Guénon in his Aperçus sur l'initiation [General thoughts
about initiation] (ch. XII, XIII et XVIII) ; there are several forms for this secret: the “essential”
secret which is ineffable by nature, secondary secrets established by sacred institutions or by
spiritual discipline and concerning various domains: secrets of science and traditional arts, secrets
of rites and symbols, secrets of “means of recognition” etc. ; and we think that if the author
resorted to these general notions (which cannot be found studied and located in their whole
anywhere else than in Guénon’s work) he would have been less likely to “complicate” the
problem, and he would even had better chances to understand his subject and to clarify it.
By judging the points the author is alluding to when he attempts to define the Hesychast way in
respect with this notion of “Arcane”, we realize that the question should have been double for
him, in reality, and it would have been interesting to see how some modern supporters of theHesychast position answer to it, as they are apparently more prepared than others to contribute
towards clarifying problems of first importance for the traditional conscience of our times:
First of all, one must know whether in the Christian Tradition, there is a Christian “esoterism” as
a particular field of the spirituality, characterized by a separate purpose, a reserved, adequate
doctrine, and some peculiar spiritual ways, or if on the contrary there is only a general
spirituality, indeed with multiple themes and degrees, but without formal separation, starting from
a specific point or in some objectively determined respect in between, on one hand, a special and
reserved path, on the other hand, a common religion. Then, and whatever the answer moreover
obtained from the first question, it matters to know above all if there is an “initiation” to
Hesychasm, constituting the formal union to this path through a special act which could be either
a “pact of adhesion”, or a “rite of transmission” (and one should also specify what is then
transmitted), or both at the same time by implication.
One of these questions is about the existence of an “esoterism”, the other is about a “special
initiation”, now if the adoption of the vague notion of “tradition of the Arcane” makes it possible
to answer the first question through an equivocal spiritualistic profession of faith susceptible of
satisfying all the parties, the actual facts did encourage to answer the second question in a clearly
affirmative way which, technically, is capital, because this answer means that the ordinarysacraments indispensable to the Christian world and profitable to the esotericists as well as to the
exotericists and even beyond, are not sufficient to be really considered on the Hesychast path. But
2

Hesychasm (V)
some Hesychasts like our author will not clearly say that this initiation belongs to an esoterical
order because they find this notion of esoterism inconvenient, moreover because the existence of
this initiation, which is the introductive benediction from the “spiritual father”, is not a secret
institution. Alas, as for us, we have all the trouble in the world in having minds like the one of M.
Pallis admit that the Hesychast initiation exists as such, that it transmits something at the same
time as it binds, and that the “spiritual father” is therefore indeed an initiator or rather the
Christian “initiator” indispensable at the human level!
In the passage we are dealing with here, apart from this attestation about the Hesychast initi ation,
(which is in short the “brilliant confirmation” the author was mentioning in his introduction)1 and
besides the already known proclamation that Hesychasm is “a tradition within the Tradition”, one
finds few truly characteristic elements.
The incidental note that came with the structural analogy with the body of the tradition, and
which says that “the prayer of the Heart is the way of the contemplative life”, does not express a
fact about the Arcane, but an elementary and universally known notion about the initiatory
method, which is simply represented here in a simplified and rather vague manner.
The characteristics of the contemplative life enumerated afterwards to differentiate it from every
“mystical school” unfortunately show nothing definite or specific. The conditions of access to the path are not defined either, and the mention of the preliminary preparation and of the care to be
taken are not followed by instructive explanations. After all, it is possible that this way of
presenting things is also due to the fact that the author did not have a good enough knowledge of
these subjects.
In another passage that we will reproduce and where one will also find that in the end, the author
decided to keep, in the case of his tradition, the expression of “Arcane” if not the notion itself,
this is how he concludes his observations:
“This is how we understand the elements of the “Hesychast Arcane”: fineness of the
doctrine, transmission of a spiritual filiation, discretion (silence and discernment of
the minds). Even though they are sufficient to define it within the universal Tradition
of the Church, to which they contribute, these same characteristics do not accept on
the other hand any forced identification with any “esoterical truth” based on an
impersonal source, coming from “beyond”. Let us add then the fourth distinctive
note: humility (this is not, obviously, about a psychological attitude, but about a true
metaphysical state), sign of the surrender of the self and of the communion to the
absolute Person who nevertheless meant: “Qui a semetipso loquitur gloriam propriam
From what we have said previously, no one will think that we would want to force the
identification of the “Hesychast Arcane” with any “esoterical truth”; as for us, we have simply
raised the analogy of Hesychasm with the initiatory ways in other current traditions with religious
1
Another Hesychast testimony using a similar terminology existed already in Prière et Sainteté dansl’Eglise russe [Prayer and Sanctity in the Russian Church] (Ed. du Cerf, 1950) (we will be the one
emphasizing some parts in the text): “Only him (the staretz) and him only can initiate the disciple to thesuperior degrees of the mystical prayer, and the “child” who acts without the consent of his “spiritual
father” falls almost surely prey to the demons. This initiation, moreover, does not limit itself to some
advices and to an intellectual education; instead this is a genuine transmission of spiritual forces. Through prayer and the benediction of the staretz the disciple receives the gifts of the divine Grace”
(pp. 135-136). Another passage from the same book mentions, without being too clear, a morecharacterized transmission: “St-Sergius of Radoniège, before withdrawing himself into loneliness is
blessed by an “ancient” who transmits to him the gift of “spiritual science”” (pp. 132-133).

forms, and it is fortunate enough that we could make such a statement about the Eastern
Christianism, because the Western one seems a lot less favored in comparison. Moreover, and
quite frankly, without traditions like Islam whose initiatory way, the Taçawwuf, has been since
the end of the 19th century the object of constant research from laic and religious Orientalists, and
finally, fortunately, without the work of a writer of Western language, like René Guénon, himself
integrated to this path and to the respective Tradition, it is likely that people would still not know
nowadays in the Western and Christian world as a whole, what true initiation and what trueesoterism are; and people would not understand that there is a universal “traditional spirit” that
renders possible inter-traditional comparisons and analogies, thus helping towards becomingaware of the reality of a unique truth which constitutes in itself and because of its multiple
resources the chain and the texture of all forms of the sacred world, as well as of the universal
existence itself.
But what exactly means the expression “any esoterical truth” not accepted by our author as a term
of comparison, because “based on an impersonal source, coming from beyond”? This is some
kind of enigma, which is certainly in relation with “the hidden continuation and denying time”
that we have previously pointed out without being able to understand it either. It is possible that
all this is meant to ensure to the Hesychast way, as well as to Christianism itself, some kind of
privilege of uniqueness and of incompatibility, and the notion of divine Personality could even
play a determining role. As for us, at the Etudes Traditionnelles, we will not stop here to examine
the seriousness of such exclusivist concepts, even though we are not ignoring that there is in
every true traditional way an originality which constitutes its reason of being as a form which is
part of the unique truth, but not as the Truth itself. In any case, we do not know any traditional
way, of religious form or else, which asserts it comes from “beyond”; all of them come from a
Principle which, moreover, they assert is the one and only.
Remarkably enough, immediately after this particularistic reference, the author adds, as a final
distinctive note about the Hesychast Arcane, that “humility” is a “true metaphysical state”. One
can therefore hope anything from now on. What is even more encouraging is that the expression
and even the meaning of “truly metaphysical” are here strictly “Guenonian”. Thank Goodness.
We find, in conclusion of this paragraph, the reminder of the words of Christ explaining about his
teaching: “He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the
honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” Of course this
citation comes in a very altruistic way and without specific personal aim, but, as for us, in any
case, since we just referred to an intellectual master, whose doctrinal virtue left his print in the
very language of those who want to give him some lessons ( post mortem), we think one could ask
this cultured monk if he knows, in the first half of this century of characterized intellectual
individualism and of more and more generalized anti-traditionalism, an author other than René
Guénon who, by exposing some doctrines and some ideas of capital importance for the
fundamental order of things, attributed them less to himself and who gave, at the same time, in a
manner as clear as possible, the evidence of their traditional origin.
One could also ask him, since the evangelical citation denounces the one who “does so to gain
honor for himself” if he knows, for the same period, an author other than Guénon who, whilefulfilling his task, exposed himself more consciously to the misunderstanding, to the hostility, to
the attacks and to the disgrace – for a while almost without exception – of a complete generation
of academics (orientalists, theologists, philosophers) and of pseudo-spiritualists (theosophists,
occultists), without mentioning the writers of diverse parties.

Therefore, when it is seen that, in all his talks, Guénon had no other care than the one of showing
the value of the traditional elements, as well as the uniqueness and the omni-possibility of the
Principle whose traditional elements proceed from and towards which they converge, when we
also notice that he succeeds then in making the greatest intellectual praise to the most universal
Truth, and in determining among many intellectuals of every parties the conscience and the cult
of this same Truth according to the various sacred forms which are accessible to them, isn’t there
any chance that he would also appear, in his order and all things considered, as “having workedfor the honor of the one who sent him”, and that he would be called “truthful”? Otherwise, one
would have to end up calling him “false” (injustitia), as the Christic sentence requires per a
contrario, which is unlikely, because this would be far too grave especially from people who at
the beginning have more than likely hold an estimable position and a perfectly respectable point
of view.
In the rest of the article a few problems are treated which are still posed by Hesychasm: the
spiritual value of the respiratory technique, the question of the Eastern origin of this technique,
etc., points which are of a certain interest as to the characterization of Hesychasm as an initiatory
way, but which are outside the boundaries of our present subject.
We will say, to conclude, that we have been pleased to have drawn from the writings of Mgr
Scrima, some elements particularly useful to the doctrinal examinations which concern us, andwe hope that we will still have the opportunity to find in his writings some elements of similar
documentary and intellectual utility. We also declare that we would have preferred to dispense
ourselves from a critical examination that unfortunately we could not avoid this time.

Etudes et documents d'Hésychasme (V)
Michel V ALSAN

Or « arcane » peut vouloir dire plusieurs choses,
