■ India will have the largestpopulation in the world inthe higher education agebracket by 2030;increasing urbanisation andincome levels will drivedemand for highereducation
■ India’s GER lags behindthat of developed countriessuch as the US, Switzerland,Japan and the UK as well asthe developing countriessuch as China, Brazil,Malaysia and the Philippines
■ Compared to developedcountries India witnesses moreenrolment in Arts andEngineering while enrolment inMedical studies is lower.
■ The higher educationsystem has grownsignificantly in the past twodecades in terms of thenumber of institutions andenrolment. GER in highereducation has more thandoubled (22.5 per cent)since 1999-2000.
■ Student enrollment hasgrown 12 times in the lastfour decades, increasingat a CAGR of 10.4 per cent since 2000-01
■ The number ofuniversities/institutions ofnational importance hasregistered a seven–foldgrowth in the last fourdecades. There are 700universities at present asagainst 256 in 2000-2001.
■ We now have more than33,000 affiliated collegeswith around 20,000 addedafter 2000-01.
