Introduction

Who can apply to the Regular Undergraduate Degree (RSS) at AUB and LAU?

The American University of Beirut and the Lebanese American University are pleased to introduce and launch the Refugee/Displaced Scholarship Support (RSS) that aims to provide undergraduate scholarships to promising non-Lebanese, public and private high school students residing in all governorates of Lebanon.

A Certificate Program is also offered by LAU only for those who wish to pursue a one-year certificate program for non-Lebanese refugees/displaced, public and private high school students residing in all governorates of Lebanon.

The above programs are made possible with the support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

To be eligible to apply under RSS, your parents must not be receiving an educational university subsidy of US $5000 or more and you should:

1. Be a refugee/displaced student residing in Lebanon and holding a valid and legal Lebanese residency permit issued by the Lebanese authorities

2. Not be an Asylum Seeker

3. Be enrolled in a public or private high school in Lebanon for at least the last three years of your secondary education

4. Obtain a minimum of 13.5/20 on the official Lebanese Baccalaureate exam

5. Demonstrate high financial need

6. Demonstrate past and present performance of service and community activities

7. Not be registered at any university and not have completed studies at any university

8. Register at LAU or AUB as a full-time student at all times

9. Not have siblings who have benefited or are benefiting from any USP scholarship

IMPORTANT

a. Students should have at all times a valid residency permit in order to maintain the scholarship

b. Students applying from Grade 12 private high schools to LAU, please check page 11 section 13

c. Students coming from Grade 12 private high schools whose school tuition fees exceed L.L. 5,000,000 are not eligible to apply.

What does RSS Cover?

How to apply to RSS?

If you are accepted, RSS will cover the following:

1. Up to full tuition fees the duration of your program (as per AUB’s and LAU’s academic regulations), including one preparatory year if needed

2. Medical insurance

3. Book allowance

4. Student housing and transportation allowance. Please note that all those who shall be entitled to dorms are explicitly bound to clear rules and regulations. Dorms are segregated (dorms for girls - dorms for boys).

5. A monthly stipend for nine to eleven months per year depending on the major

6. Laptop

7. Counseling services and psychosocial support as needed.

8. Support services shall be offered to women coming to live on campus, if and when needed.

Note that if you want to apply to both LAU and AUB you need to present an original application and original supporting documents to each university. Please make sure you specify the university of your choice by ticking the corresponding box on the Cover Page of your application.

To apply, you should submit the following required application documents:

• Enclosed Applications for Admission (Page 10) and for Financial Aid prior to March 29, 2019, to the Admissions Office at AUB or LAU. If you are applying to LAU, please submit your application to the Beirut or Byblos Admissions Office

• Official high school transcript of the last three years sent directly to the Admissions Office in a sealed and stamped envelope

• Proof of English proficiency by submitting only one of the below:

a. SAT I writing section and language section

b. Official score of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

c. English Entrance Exam (EEE) administered at AUB and LAU if (a) or (b) are not available

• Certified copy of the official Lebanese baccalaureate or official technical Lebanese baccalaureate when available

• Two recent passport-size colored photos taken within the past six months, one for Financial Aid and one for Admissions

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ARE ONLY RELEVANT TO THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Who can apply to the Certificate Program at LAU?

To be eligible to apply under the Certificate Program, your parents must not be receiving an educational university subsidy of US $5000 or more and you should:

• Be a refugee/displaced student residing in Lebanon and holding a valid and legal Lebanese residency permit issued by the Lebanese authorities

• Not be an Asylum Seeker

• Be enrolled in a public or private high school in Lebanon for at least the last three years of your secondary education

• Obtain a minimum of 10/20 on your official Lebanese Baccalaureate exam

• Earn at least a cumulative combined average of 10/20 in your first two years of secondary schooling (Grades 10 & 11)

• Demonstrate high financial need

• Not be registered at any university and not have completed studies at any university

• Not have siblings who have benefited or are benefiting from any USP scholarship

Notes:

• The application for the Certificate program may be downloaded at: www.lau.edu.lb/usp. You may wish to print the form, fill it out and submit it along with the required documents. Photocopies are not allowed except for Ifedit el Milkieh subject that the originals are presented for verification. Original Ifedit el Milkieh will be returned to parents.

• The Admissions and Financial Aid applications must be submitted to the Continuing Education Office (CE) at LAU prior to March 29, 2019. Applications received after the deadline, incomplete applications or applications with missing supporting documents will not be processed.

If you are interested in being considered as a candidate in the RSS scholarship program, please submit all of the following required documents with this application form completely filled out in block letters and dry ink (NOT pencil) to the Office of Admissions prior to March 29, 2019.

This checklist is for you to ensure inclusion of all needed documents. Any missing document will jeopardize processing your application.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Therefore, all items requested below (when applicable) must be submitted with the application form:

Personal Documentsa. One passport-size color photograph taken within the

past six months.

b. A copy of the national identity card (صورة عن الهوية) or a recent individual civil record (إخراج قيد فردي), issued within the past three months of the applicant and parents/guardian.

c. A recent family civil status record (إخراج قيد عائلي), issued within the past three months.

d. status in Lebanon:Legal residency and/orsponsorship. Please provide the relative documents

Academic Recordsa. A recent school certificate of registration showing

annual fees for each dependent child (including the applicant’s) enrolled at school or university. If applicable, the certificate should list all financial aid received.

b. Official High School grades for the last two school years (G10 or BT1 and G11 or BT2) in a sealed stamped envelope.

Employment RecordsA recent National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Certificate of Service (افادة خدمة من الضمان االجتماعي) should be provided for both parents, even if unemployed, and all nonworking siblings if not enrolled in a school or university.

a. If Employed, below is a list of documents required for each earning family member:

· A recent employment certificate (s) clearly stating occupation, job title, years of service, number of months payable, and benefits (educational benefits, accommodation, health). Note: it is obligatory to submit the annual amount of educational benefits you will receive once enrolled at the university. Any false declaration may lead to disqualification.

· Attached employee income statement Form A filled out, signed, and stamped by employer. If working in the public sector, the official income statement issued by the government is required.

· Bank statements reflecting regular salary transfers or a letter notarized by the bank confirming the monthly salary amount transfer.

· Latest three months’ salary slips, signed and stamped by employer.

· If paid in cash, a certificate from employer is required stating that wages are paid in cash. It should also include salary for the last three months.

b. If Self-employed, below is a list of documents required for each self-employed family member:

· Attached self-employed income statement Form B filled out, signed and stamped.

· Official business registration and shareholders’ documents تسجيل مؤسسة/إذاعة تجارية income tax statements, official balance sheet documents (ضريبة

· and business account bank (الدخل/ المؤسسات/ مقطوعةstatements for the last year, copy of national ID or passport for both parents should be provided.

· If business is not registered and no official papers can be provided, a certificate or evidence of self-employment is required from the mayor or mukhtar (مختار) clearly indicating the type of business, location of business premises, number of employees and approximate business income.

c. If Retired, below is a list of documents required for each retired parent:

· Official retirement documents should be provided, such as a recent retirement salary certificate (جديدة بالراتب or official document of indemnity received from (التقاعدemployer/NSSF.

d. If Unemployed, below is a list of documents required for each unemployed family member:

· A mayor’s or mukhtar’s evidence of unemployment certificate (إفادة عدم مزاولة اي عمل) should be provided.

· If unemployed, please indicate your source of income with the supporting documents.

Documents Related to Assets/Housing (In Lebanon):a. If renting a home or a business, a photocopy of a recent

rental contract should be provided. If this is not available, the latest rent receipts are required.

b. Ownership deed of owned or inherited house, resort, buildings, land and business premises (سند ملكية).

c. If properties are not allotted, estate documents or a sale contract should be submitted.

d. If living in a friend’s or a relative’s property, a recent mayor’s or mukhtar’s document in applicant’s name clearly stating owner of property (إفادة سكن من المختار .is required (بإسم التلميذ

e. If built properties are not registered on ownership deeds, a recent certificate of contents (إفادة محتويات) from Municipality is required.

f. Photocopy of car(s) registration form for each family car and most recent annual car tax receipt(s) or car(s) insurance documents.

g. ifedit milkieh

(من قضاء السكن )يشمل المصيف( ومن قضاء النفوس )will be required from both mother and father/caregiver of shortlisted applicants only. Applicants are encouraged to submit “ifedit milkieh” of both mother and father/caregiver upfront with the application. The average cost of each ifedit milkieh is L.L.25,000 per caza per person.

Please note that additional documents may be requested by the University.

Financial Recordsa. Photocopy of loan agreement(s) if any with all

supporting documents.

b. Sale documents of any property if sold within the past three years.

c. Photocopy of recent medical and life insurance annual premium.

d. A letter from any individual or an organization providing financial assistance to applicant’s family.

e. A recent bank statement of saving accounts.

f. Any additional documents deemed necessary to support your financial aid application, i.e. medical report, certificate of job termination, end of service, proof of revenue from rented properties, etc.

Application Deadline

The Admission and Financial Aid applications must be submitted to the Admissions Office at AUB and LAU prior to March 29, 2019. If you are applying to LAU, you should submit the applications to the Admissions Office in Beirut or Byblos.

Applications received after the deadline – March 29, 2019 – will NOT be considered.

Please note that incomplete applications or applications with missing supporting documents will not be processed.

Also note that if you want to apply to both LAU and AUB you need to present an original application and original supporting documents to each university, except for Ifedit El Milkieh as per above.

• The Application for RSS may be downloaded at: www.aub.edu.lb/usp and www.lau.edu.lb/usp. You may wish to print the form, fill it out and submit it along with the required documents. If applying to both AUB and LAU, you need to fill two original application forms and submit original documents to each university. Photocopies are not allowed, except for Ifedit el Milkieh subject that the originals are presented for verification during the interviews. Original Ifedit el Milkieh will be returned to parents.

• It is advisable to submit the completed application in person or send it by Liban Post or preferably by registered mail (بريد مضمون) with Liban Post. Please submit it in person or through an immediate family member. It is also advisable that you keep a copy of your application and all documents submitted, It is important to note that documents sent via Liban Post

might take up to 10 working days to be submitted. thus

• To register for the SAT, please visit the College Board’s website at: www.collegeboard.org.

• When registering for the TOEFL or SAT I, use AUB’s code: 0902 and LAU’s code: 2595. Please note that you may choose not to register for TOFEL and SAT and take the English Entrance Exam (EEE) offered by LAU and AUB.

• The English Entrance Exam (EEE) is administered by AUB and LAU for shortlisted students. Details will be communicated to selected students by AUB and LAU admissions/ USP team. The test preparation material may be downloaded at admissions.aub.edu.lb and admissions.lau.edu.lb/files/eee-test-prep.pdf. You should start preparing for the English Entrance Exam in case you are shortlisted.

• If applying to LAU and depending on your choice of major, the Sophomore exam covers three out of the following subjects: mathematics, physics, chemistry, life science, general science, philosophy and economics.

• The IDs of the shortlisted students who are invited to exams or interviews will be posted at www.aub.edu.lb/usp and www.lau.edu.lb/usp; if your ID number is not posted online, this means that your application was not successful. Applicants can track their application by using these sites.

• The admission office at LAU and AUB will contact you directly to inform you about exams and interviews. Failure to attend scheduled exams or interviews will result in withdrawal from the program even if shortlisted.
