ion Dear Educator, Librarian, Reader,

I’m very proud to announce that this year of 2014 we are celebrating our 80th anniversary. Throughout all these years Fondo de Cultura Económica (fce) has published the work of many brilliant authors and scholars, creating one of the richest and most diverse catalogs in Latin America. Given its rigorous publishing tradition and its international presence, fce is today considered one of the leading publishers in Latin America. Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Carlos Castaneda, Elena Poniatowska, Carlos Monsiváis and hundreds of other distinguished authors have made Fondo de Cultura Económica their home.

fce originally provided students of economics with books in Spanish, and then it gradually expanded to include other subjects; now its back catalog of 10,000 titles—approximately 5,000 of which are still in print—encompasses works on history, philosophy, anthropology, economics, sociology, arts, children’s literature, popular science, and literature (fiction and non-fiction).

fce also has thirty-two bookstores: twenty-two in Mexico, eight in Latin America, one in Madrid, and one in Washington, DC. In addition to its offices in Mexico, fce also has branches in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, Spain, the USA, and Venezuela and I’m very happy to announce our next branch opening soon in Ecuador. Our publishing house also produces two magazines: El Trimestre Económico, the longest-running Latin American quarterly journal on economics, and La Gaceta, a monthly publication with articles on our authors and reviews of our books.

We release over 200 new titles each year and this catalog—a small selection of our new titles and highlights—will undoubtedly be of interest to your institution. You are welcome to order children’s literature and other titles through our Sales and Distribution branch in San Diego, California, at the Portico Bookstore located in Washington, DC, or through our main distributors across the USA (see page 46).

At the vanguard of the needs of our readers, today fce has a catalog of 700 e-books for all types of electronic devices that you can download in the most important platforms in the market, or find them at our website: www.fceusa.com

Thank you,Dorina M Razo, fce-USA Manager

The Mixtecs of Colonial Oaxaca: Ñudzahui History from the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth Centuries

This extensive study covers Ñudzahui culture and society and its transformations during the colonial period as

Ignored for a long time, the Olmec civilization appears as the most ancient of the American continent. The well-

known Americanist Jacques Soustelle outlines the Olmecs’ profi le, showing their images and describing their culture, and at the same time he points at their infl uence on other more fortunate pre-Hispanic civilizations, whose presence still remains among us.

re Dmitri Shostakóvich. Genio y drama

Dmitri Shostakovich: Genius and Drama

Dmitri Shostakovich has been a perennial presence in the work of Mexican cellist Carlos Prieto. In the present

volume, the musician recounts the unprecedented story of one of the twentieth century’s most enigmatic composers as he recreates the turbulent times Shostakovich lived. The study—in addition to an introduction by Jorge Volpi and a series of appendices that document the composer’s complete works—includes a link that allows readers to download two Shostakovich pieces that Prieto has interpreted.

Entre Voces is a series of classical Mexican and Latin American audio

books. Read by their original authors or by other famous writers,

this collection is proud to use only the unabridged versions of

original texts. Probably the greatest virtue of Entre voces is that

it evokes for the listener the oral tradition inherent to the origins

of every literary work. The collection includes poetry, narrative

fiction, and drama, by authors as important as Lope de Vega or

Sor Juana.

Erich Fromm and Human Nature

Man’s freedom and human nature are the central points of this series of essays, the outcome of a dissertation

between two great thinkers, Germany’s Erich Fromm and Mexican Ramón Xirau. Here, man is a being who makes himself and moves toward freedom through his labors, yet does not always wish to be free and devises new idols to that end. A masterful philosophy of human nature.

Democracia y secreto

Democracy and Secrecy

In this magnifi cent tome, political scientist, philosopher and jurist Norberto Bobbio refl ects on who promotes hidden

power as well as that agent’s need to wrest its actions from democratic control. Corruption—as democracy’s principal detractor—menaces not only the State but citizens as well. Here Bobbio focuses on two key issues: democracy and the governability, as he invites readers to admit that within the visible government there exists another who acts in the shadows—if not in total darkness.

An essay in form but with an unparalleled sense of narrative, Pérez Tamayo’s treatise reveals the ten reasons

that led him to become a scientist, even as he warns readers “not to believe[…] I was aware [of them] before I chose my profession.” The author, one of Mexico’s most distinguished scientists, concerns himself not only with forming future generations in science, but in complete, well-rounded culture as well.

A beautiful tale, simple and replete with humor, imagination and intelligence, ¿Para

qué sirve un niño? recounts the story of a little boy who fi nds himself bored by the country and its silence, until one day he meets a sheep, a cow, a hen and a wolf—and starts talking to them. Then they make fun of him, because Leonardo, a boy, “isn’t good for anything.” Ultimately an unstated truth is revealed as part of a fun and fortunately-timed parable.

Taro Gomi

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1945. As a child he loved traditional Japanese

stories filled with mythical animals like dragons, although he also

liked the tales by the Brothers Grimm. He studied industrial design at

the Duwasawa school in his native city, and his first job was designing

tables, chairs, ashtrays, and other objects. But he soon became bored after

realizing that these objects only served the purpose for which they had

been created, whereas books could have a wide range of uses—something

he discovered when he began working as an illustrator—. This marked the

beginning of a lifelong career. Gomi is now one of Japan’s leading illustrators.

He has published over 300 books which have been translated into more than

ten languages.

Japanese author Kitamura spins a yarn that moves

us and has us longing for home sweet home. As Dog

makes his way home from the city, he starts to smell

those great aromas that tell him he’s come just in time

for dinner. Once more Satoshi Kitamura enchants young

and old alike.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1956. Even though Kitamura has no formal

artistic education, he became interested in illustration through

comics at an early age. He began illustrating advertisments, magazines,

and posters. He then moved to London. Since 1981 he has written and

illustrated children’s books. His work has been translated and has received

important awards, including the Mother Goose Award and Japan’s

Illustrated Book Award.

Max Ernst was a painter, a bird, a fi sh.

He climbed thoughts and fl ew without even losing the ground. With papers and fl owers, books and maps, he could be transported to the realm of the impossible. His dreams taught him to love and the fl ight of birds taught him to paint portraits. Who was Max? This book answers the question as he himself would have done, with images that evoke the freedom of dreams: Max was many things at once, because he was an artist.

Like any classic, Caperucita Roja allows for myriad versions and as many interpretations. Serra has

constructed his in extraordinary fashion: without a single word and by moving an innocent girl out of the spotlight, in favor of the clever, ferocious wolf, into whose mouth she quite literally inserts herself. The struggle between good and evil, truth and deceit, as well as the realm of doubt, are foregrounded in this beautiful yet disquieting tale.

Character Rhetoric in Children’s Literature

In this study—the fi rst of its type to be published in Spanish—Maria Nikolajeva examines children’s literature

in light of critical theory to reveal character classifi cation, construction and interpretation mechanisms in narrative aimed at young audiences. Through an analytical reading of classics like Tom Sawyer, The Little Prince or Mary Poppins, and availing herself of tools taken from literary critique’s most canonical texts, Nikolajeva provides a systematic, rigorous and yet simultaneously accessible vision that is sure to be a valuable reference to anyone interested in enjoying, writing or studying children’s literature.

Journal VI: September 27, 1945-August 3, 1951

In his journals, written from 1911 to 1959, Alfonso Reyes recorded some fi ve decades that encompassed the totality

of his life as an adult. In 1995, with support from José Luis Martínez, Reyes’s granddaughter and the executrix of his estate, Alicia Reyes, led a team of experts in taking on the all but overwhelming task of preparing this material for publication. The present volume, covering the 1945-1951 period, was painstakingly compiled by Dr. Víctor Díaz Arciniega.

Of Heaven and Its Marvels, of the World and Its Miseries

Since its explosion onto the Mexican literary scene, Aridjis’s poetry has astonished readers with its dynamism and light

(light both diurnal and nocturnal) as expressed in rhythm and cadence. This is poetry of love, yet of force, possessed of strange magnetism and a certain delicacy. Its voice is now splendidly mature, evoking the shadows of the city in all its charms and disgrace, creating poetry at once exalted and redeeming.

It Was Late Already is a compilation of poems by Aline Petterson. The poems’ subtle language guides the reader

through the situations sketched in the verses and refl ects the author’s expert powers of careful observation of the world around us. Pettersson needs not to use dark or violent images to expose the crudeness of life; through her work she proves that linguistic simplicity and precise expression form the basis for writing poetry.

The poetry of Saúl Yurkievich (who was dubbed a virtuoso of words by Carlos Fuentes) is a type of

language recreation that rejects the authority of rigid traditionalist forms, thus allowing the expressive possibilities of the poem to manifest themselves without being subordinated to clarity.

An Introduction to Octavio Paz

The author’s elegant and precise prose succinctly yet fully presents all essential aspects of Octavio Paz’s

extraordinary, luminous intellectual and artistic career, from its origins in the 1930s until well into the 1990s. Julio Hubard carries out the task of editing to an almost handicraft

degree by searching, selecting, and fi nding chronological links in the life of one of the most infl uential writers of the twenty-fi rst century. By themselves, each phrase, poem, and essay are merely the author’s ephemeral ideas and anecdotes. However, the entire work could well be considered to be a false autobiography, since although Octavio Paz never aimed to capture his life in a text, in this book every single word —in verse or in prose— was written by Paz himself.

Verani asks us to read the poems of one of the most important

voices in Mexican literature with a new, fresh vision and to shun commonplace interpretations. To facilitate this, Verani provides a complete portrait of the infl uences on Paz’s work. Each poem is presented as a refl ection upon places Paz visited, an individual experience incarnated in history. In the poems, an awareness of the decline of civilization prevails as well as a yearning for liberation through word, and so a will to transform the world.

Collected Works IV: Essays on Twentieth-Century Mexican Literature

“Her peripatetic heart is a dynamic organ, reckless and sure of itself.” Thus Elena Poniatowska

describes Margo Glantz, who reviews Mexico’s twentieth-century literature in this fourth installment, a complement to the previous volume, her essay on the writing of the nineteenth century. Here the author applies intelligence and critical perspective to present “What the Revolution Brought Us—or What it Left Us”—as well as “Writing, Chronicle or the Trend?” among other fascinating chapters.

Pieces of Shadow is a selection of poetry by Jaime Sabines, one of the most important fi gures in Hispano-American

literature. These poems have ‘the jarring authenticity of passion in tone, a great cracked bell note of craving and frustration, irony and anger, outrage and black humour all jangled at once, unabashed, unsweetened, unappeased, and all of it essential to the rest’.

Relatos de poder

Las enseñanzas de don Juan. Una forma yaqui de conocimiento

Una realidad aparte. Nuevas conversaciones con don Juan

The fi rst book by Carlos Castaneda recounts

the fi rst learning stage that converted him into a “man of knowledge” under the tutelage of a Yaqui shaman. Availing himself of various pathways, Don Juan immerses his disciple in a far-from-ordinary reality, inexplicable within our ways of thinking—yet inherent to the ancient wisdom the master transmits.

In unparalleled prose endowed with enormous descriptive capacity, once again Carlos Castaneda describes the phases

of his transformation from “warrior” to “man of knowledge,” an arduous journey that does not culminate here, but is just beginning, and which enables the author to become one of Yaqui wisdom’s last heirs—the transmitter of knowledge.

This third volume on the author’s initiation as a

“man of knowledge” retraces his steps back to his fi rst experiences with his spiritual master,

Yaqui shaman Don Juan; to his tale of wonders is added the arduous physical and mental tasks that prepared him from the beginning for a decisive act of power. The story closes with an account of the journey to which the title alludes—a summons to the solitude and stark beauty that such a life encompasses.

The author, an esteemed political scientist

known for the originality of his assertions, begins with a number of political theories and changes to notions of power, the State and politics, to limn the probable nature of current-day Latin American democracy in light of capitalist modernization, human rights inclusion and information.

An expert on economic and political issues, Dr.

Luis Rubio’s outstanding essay presents a wide-ranging and precise perspective on what the

North American Free Trade Agreement has come to be, and above all reveals a complete vision of its nature and the reach it has come to take on in Mexico. Notably, the study not only includes an analysis of past considerations, but also projects future perspectives, implications, benefi ts and the challenges that signatory nations will have to face.

Possessed of thorough knowledge on the subject,

the author studies and explains a fundamental issue of our time: changes in Europe since the breakup of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall. He reveals transformations that Central and Eastern European nations have undergone as well as those transformations’ necessary resonances throughout the rest of the continent, especially following the implementation of certain neo-liberal measures. Europe’s new-found challenges, the result of deep and persistent fi nancial crisis, are also explored.

Freud en México. Historia de un delirio

Freud in Mexico: A History of Delirium

Among Mexican dreams about which little is known, Freud collected antiquities from that nation and was

also an avid reader of its writers. Rubén Gallo reveals the connections to and repercussions in Freud’s published work as they relate not only to Mexican psychoanalytic tradition, but also to ways the analyst’s ideas were received by artists and intellectuals as prominent as Octavio Paz, Salvador Novo, Diego Riviera and Frida Kahlo.

Alcohol and Developing Countries: A Public Health Perspective

Alcohol has been a part of many cultures for millennia. However, in the present day the fact that it is considered

a consumer commodity gives rise to multiple social and health problems. The aim of this book is to present the known facts about the epidemiology of alcohol in developing countries. It also examines the strategies that governments can adopt to prevent and reduce problems caused by alcohol, and how the effectiveness of these strategies is evaluated.

Marijuana is the most consumed illegal drug in the world, but studies of its effects on health and the

effectiveness of systems to control it have had a marginal role in the international debate on controlling illegal drugs. Políticas sobre la cannabis remedies this gap in the literature and helps set medical research on cannabis into a prominent place in the political debate about drug use.

Bauman examines the moment in which

culture stopped being an agent of change and became

a means for seduction after being marked by globalization, migrants and the population mixture. The best example of this is Europe, where culture revitalizes and understands itself through the diversity of races, languages and histories.

Cole and Ruben seek revenge for the death of their sister Rachel, who was raped and murdered when visiting a

friend in a nearby town. While they investigate the identity of the murderer’s identity, Ruben uses his skill to perceive what others feel in order to discover a secret that will ensnare the brothers in a world of shadowy characters, where interests and intrigues will now force them to defend their own lives.
