Surprisingly, quite a lot! It took Google just 0.24 seconds to come up with a list of over 40,600,000 hits on the topic. Adult learning is at the heart of teachers building communities of practice. The fourth and last leadership goal for PD leaders is to facilitate broad-based, skilful participation in the planning and implementation of effective, collaborative, ongoing professional development. The focus needs to be on supporting teacher leaders in building, facilitating and moderating communities/networks of practice. The field of adult learning, pioneered by Malcolm Knowles, is characterized by six critical features that are key to building lively and lasting communities of practice. Consider the following: • Adults are highly autonomous and self-directed. • Adults have a foundation of life experiences and knowledge. • Adults are goal-oriented and they know what they want to attain or accomplish. • Adults want the learning to be relevant. • Adults are practical. • Adults need and want to be shown respect. Perhaps a less known but increasingly critical factor in successful adult learning is social relationships. The opportunity to connect with others and to build associations and friendships is necessary to sustain an ethos of learning. The recent growth and interest in developing learning communities is evidence of this trend. Whether face to face, in small groups both inside and outside of schools, or in virtual online communities, the need to engage in interactive, generative, collective and participatory learning experiences underscores the importance of learning as a social activity. Learning communities are interesting places where distributed forms of leadership is a central organizing feature. They are places where learners are drawn together because of a shared commitment to their discipline and students (values) and a desire to improve teaching and learning (vision) in a place where multiple types of learning are accepted, encouraged and nurtured Building a Community of Practice Michael Podlosky, Coordinator, Professional Development
