FROM THE PRINCIPAL, JEFF DAVIS My thanks and congratulaons go to Hillcrest Chrisan College’s Performing Arts Director, Jeremy Williamson and the many staff and students, who were involved in the producon of Jesus Christ Superstar this week. It is impossible to name all of those involved, however I want to truly highlight the efforts of the staff for having the courage to take on such an incredible show and wrap it in the Chrisan Faith and beliefs through which this College has been built upon. Jesus Christ Superstar was wrien by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice in 1970. Although it features all of the biblical characters and is fundamentally built around the story, as per the Gospels of Mahew, Mark, Luke and John, the story is built around the belief that Jesus Christ was just a man. This assumpon was one that has caused incredible resistance in Chrisanity circles around the world and has seen this musical condemned by spiritual leaders of all denominaons for decades. Hillcrest Chrisan College is built on the foundaonal faith that Jesus Christ is the Risen Lord and Saviour of the world, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." John 3:16-21 (NIV) We believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, was crucified on a cross and on the third day rose again. The Hillcrest Chrisan College producon highlights our faith exceponally well and the interpretaon of Jesus Christ, as just a mere man, is carefully and wonderfully challenged. I am immensely proud of the staff and students who have devoted incredible me and energy to this producon. The end result sets a new benchmark for our future producons. Thank you and congratulaons for performing an incredible producon. honours program One of the clear observaons that I made at the start of the year is that students were leaving Hillcrest in some cases to obtain more subject opons at other schools. This is partly due to the size of other schools, and their capacity to offer addional subject choices, and also the fact that with lower enrolments at Yrs 10-12, Hillcrest has historically limited opons to the most popular subjects. Aſter considerable financial modelling and planning, we have made a decision to offer a subject guarantee to all parents. In essence, this means that from this point forward Hillcrest Chrisan College will offer a suite of subjects commensurate with what would be expected at larger schools, such as All Saints or Emmanuel. Irrespecve of the number of students who select these subjects, we will offer the line structure, that is included as part of this newsleer, each year, so students from our Junior Learning Community can make accurate plans for their senior school journey. We can also consider acceleraon into these year levels from a very early age, as our metable structure will remain consistent from year to year. Not only are we providing a large range of subject choices, but we have also been able to secure partnerships with Bond, Griffith, QUT and Southern Cross Universies, where we can offer first year subjects as part of our senior school syllabus. This will provide students with the unique ability to be able to complete their formal years of educaon at Hillcrest Chrisan College, while sll obtaining course accreditaon into first year terary studies, as is expected from places such as the Qld Academy of Health Science. We are very proud to offer this to you, as it is a unique and specific way in which students at Hillcrest can receive significant benefits and opportunies beyond that which they would find at other schools. To assist students in planning their courses, we will be offering significant support to ensure that an individual learning plan is developed to maximise opportunies for them to achieve their goals and dreams they have for their learning journey. Please take the me to review the draſt metable at the link below and ask any quesons so that we can clarify the incredible benefit this will provide to your child both as an educaon experience and a higher order learning outcome. YR 10-12 ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES UNIFORM I have asked my team to review the student uniform, as part of the College review we are undertaking. I am pleased to inform you that this review has resulted in significant improvements in the quality and usability of our College uniform. Mr Dirk van Bruggen and Mrs Joy Geyer have worked with the uniform supplier to ensure that from the beginning of next year we will have a far more consistent uniform across year levels. Please take me to make yourself aware of the changes so you can plan accordingly for your child's needs from 2016 and beyond. BUILDING WORKS The College building works are about to begin with the waterproof cover for the senior quad commencing construcon this week. While this process will take a number of weeks to complete, we are ensuring that it will not provide disrupon to the student learning program. The digital sign construcon at the drop-off area will be installed over the next few weeks, as we now have the brackets required to secure this safely. The restoraon work for the sails, that were damaged in the Christmas storms, shall be reinstated in the next four weeks. Again, this will take place when students are not onsite in an aempt to prevent any potenal injury. The planning for the new P-2 campus is progressing smoothly with regular meengs with all design staff. We are hoping to provide the final plans shortly aſter the mid-term break for all staff to consider. We are expecng building works to commence in October 2015. NEXT P&F MEETING 7PM, WEDNESDAY, 3 JUNE 2015 I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the P&F to review areas of the College where parents would like to see improvements. The first two meengs, this year, have been very engaging and provided a great opportunity for parents to convey their ideas to the College administraon. We are specifically interested in hearing your ideas and feedback to assist in the 5-year strategic planning cycle that is currently being developed. At our next meeng, we will be looking at the topic of co-curricular, such as sport and performing arts. In parcular, we will be seeking feedback and input into the opportunies you, as parents, would like for your children. To facilitate even more parents coming, we have made arrangements for these meengs to be held in the Yr 7 Learning Space with child- minding being provided in one of these rooms. I would encourage all parents to consider invesng 2 hours to come to this meeng and parcipate in discussions relang to the improvement to Hillcrest and the educaonal experience that your children have access to. Hillcrest Christian College is an interdenominational ministry of Reedy Creek Baptist Church and is operated by Hillcrest Christian College Ltd.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL, JEFF DAVISMy thanks and congratulations go to Hillcrest Christian College’s Performing Arts Director, Jeremy Williamson and the many staff and students, who were involved in the production of Jesus Christ Superstar this week. It is impossible to name all of those involved, however I want to truly highlight the efforts of the staff for having the courage to take on such an incredible show and wrap it in the Christian Faith and beliefs through which this College has been built upon.

Jesus Christ Superstar was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice in 1970. Although it features all of the biblical characters and is fundamentally built around the story, as per the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the story is built around the belief that Jesus Christ was just a man. This assumption was one that has caused incredible resistance in Christianity circles around the world and has seen this musical condemned by spiritual leaders of all denominations for decades.

Hillcrest Christian College is built on the foundational faith that Jesus Christ is the Risen Lord and Saviour of the world,

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because

he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

John 3:16-21 (NIV)

We believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, was crucified on a cross and on the third day rose again. The Hillcrest Christian College production highlights our faith exceptionally well and the interpretation of Jesus Christ, as just a mere man, is carefully and wonderfully challenged. I am immensely proud of the staff and students who have devoted incredible time and energy to this production. The end result sets a new benchmark for our future productions. Thank you and congratulations for performing an incredible production.

honours programOne of the clear observations that I made at the start of the year is that students were leaving Hillcrest in some cases to obtain more subject options at other schools. This is partly due to the size of other schools, and their capacity to offer additional subject choices, and also the fact that with lower enrolments at Yrs 10-12, Hillcrest has historically limited options to the most popular subjects. After considerable financial modelling and planning, we have made a decision to offer a subject guarantee to all parents.

In essence, this means that from this point forward Hillcrest Christian College will offer a suite of subjects commensurate with what would be expected at larger schools, such as All Saints or Emmanuel. Irrespective of the number of students who select these subjects, we will offer the line structure, that is included as part of this newsletter, each year, so students from our Junior Learning Community can make accurate plans for their senior school journey. We can also consider acceleration into these year levels from a very early age, as our timetable structure will remain consistent from year to year.

Not only are we providing a large range of subject choices, but we have also been able to secure partnerships with Bond, Griffith, QUT and Southern Cross Universities, where we can offer first year subjects as part of our senior school syllabus. This will provide students with the unique ability to be able to complete their formal years of education at Hillcrest Christian College, while still obtaining course accreditation into first year tertiary studies, as is expected from places such as the Qld Academy of Health Science.

We are very proud to offer this to you, as it is a unique and specific way in which students at Hillcrest can receive significant benefits and opportunities beyond that which they would find at other schools. To assist students in planning their courses, we will be offering significant support to ensure that an individual learning plan is developed to maximise opportunities for them to achieve their goals and dreams they have for their learning journey. Please take the time to review the draft timetable at the link below and ask any questions so that we can clarify the incredible benefit this will provide to your child both as an education experience and a higher order learning outcome.

JUNIOR LEARNING COMMUNITYKINDY'S MARVELLOUS MOTHER'S DAY MORNING TEA

On Monday 4 May and Friday 8 May, Kindy held their Marvellous Mother’s Day Morning Teas. The children worked very hard in the days leading up to plan an array of activities that they thought their Mums would enjoy, and made beautiful hand-painted flower pots for their gift. The children blessed their mummies with a performance of My God is so Big, and Open, Shut Them (Including the opposite version for a giggle). They then took their Mums off to the outdoor area to give them a hand massage, make them a very fashionable pasta necklace, read stories with them and paint their portrait. Finally everyone tucked in to an amazing feast, and spent some time chatting and connecting as a Kindy community. Here are a few Kindy thoughts about mothers.

I love my Mum because…‘... she is so pretty.’ - AVA

‘... she always gives me lollies.’- JORJA

‘... she gives me hugs.’ - OSCAR

‘... she gives me kisses all the morning.’ - TIMMY

‘... she reads me the Bibles at night.’ - ETHAN

‘... she's beautiful and cute, and always cooks me bacon and cheese eggs.’ - CHARLIE

‘... she gives me huggles and kisses.’ - CHLOE

‘... she plays with me.’ - ROCKY

YEAR 1 DINOSAURS

We have been having so much fun in Year 1 this term! Over the past few weeks, the Year 1 children have been learning all about Dinosaurs. Together with our amazing student teacher MR. NIEUWOUDT, the children have learnt about Paleontology, have become Stegosaurus’ for the day and, with the help of Skeleton Sam, participated in their very own Dinosaur Dig. Much to the delight of all students, we then hopped on the bus and headed on an exciting adventure to the Queensland Museum. There, we got to experience life-sized dinosaurs in the Museum’s new Dinosaur Discovery Exhibition, see an array of fossils and witness firsthand the Muttaburrasaurus bones Paleontologists have discovered in Queensland. To culminate our knowledge, we then decided to change our classroom into our very own Museum! We brainstormed the different areas of a Museum, made maps and brochures, decided on our materials and then worked together to create the various exhibitions and spaces our Museum needed. Once completed, the students then took on the roles of tour guides, exhibition experts, café staff and ticket booth cashiers. We had many visitors come to our Museum and would like to say a big thank you to MRS GEYER, 3J and MISS SLAVIN’S YEAR 11 CLASSES for coming to visit! The children have had a wonderful time learning about dinosaurs this term. They have learnt many interesting facts and have created countless memories along the way. What a fun term it has been in Year 1!

YEAR 4 EXCURSION

On Tuesday 19 May, 4A and 4Y went on an excursion to Reedy Creek Baptist Church. We walked down and were met by PASTOR BRENDAN. We got a tour of the church and realised that the church has more than just a Sunday service, in fact, they have groups and activities meeting at their building all week. We learned that these activities are all to point people towards Jesus and His love for everyone. After the church, we spent some time in the local park. We did some sketching for art and some exploration of rocks and erosion for science. We then began the walk back up the hill and got back just as it started to rain. It was a wonderful day of learning, exercise and fun!

EXPLORER DAY 2015

On Monday 25 May, 4A and 4Y had an EXPLORER DAY! We have been learning about some early explorers and the amazing journeys they took to find new land. We dressed

up as our explorer, presented our findings to the King and then we had a treasure hunt! The treasure hunt took us all around the school and we ended up on the oval. We played a team building game, then we got to open up the treasure box! It was fun and exciting day.

Q: Why did Captain Cook sail to Australia?

A: It was too far to swim!

RAAF VISIT - YEAR 6

Recently the Year 6 students of Hillcrest Christian College had the immense privilege of being visited by The Explosive Detector Dog Section, 2 Security Force Squadron, of Amberley Air Force Base.

SERGEANT JOHN KINGSTON and LEADING AIRCRAFTSMAN NICK GODOWSKY arrived in an armoured response vehicle with three playful passengers in the back. The two German Shepherd puppies, CHICO and CRUNCH, were the stars of the show! As soon as the puppies came through the door, the Year 6 students squealed with excitement. The pups were so cute and cuddly that even the teachers were under their spell, especially MRS COUTTS.

The soldiers explained to us what was involved in the complex training regimes to turn a civilian dog into a security dog for the Royal Australian Air Force. It takes a special type of canine to be adept at guarding a Super Hornet!

SERGEANT KINGSTON and LEADING AIRCRAFTSMAN

Page 5: Hillcrest Christian College Newsletter - 29 May 2015

GODOWSKY allowed the students to handle the equipment they use for training. We could not believe how padded and heavy the training suits that the handlers have to wear are. It would keep you warm in the Antarctica. The trainers have to be careful however, as the dog can still bite through the material, ouch!

When time came for the visitors to go, no one wanted to say bye to these adorable puppies. We were very appreciative of the huge effort that these men had made in becoming canine companions and, also, coming and sharing with us. It was a once in a life time opportunity that will stay in our hearts forever.

HANNAH SCHWINDACK and ABBEY GIBBS

countdown to L.O.L. day!

WEEK 7, THURSDAY 4 JUNE

Year 6 students are busy organising their activities and stalls.

Where are you going first? Will it be the chocolate bed to test your skills and win a chocolate or over to get a fancy fruit kebab? Do you have a great way of making paper planes that can zoom for miles? What about Crème the teacher? Which teacher will YOU throw the creamy sponge at?

Years 1-3, don’t forget to get in your orders for lolly bags.

This year we will also have gluten free cakes so remember to pop those orders in.

Let’s see if we can raise lots of money again this year for our sponsor children!

SENIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY

GOLD COAST JUNIOR COUNCIL UPDATE

On Friday, 22 May the 2nd Junior council meeting was held where the new Executive team was sworn in by MAYOR TOM TATE. Sadly, we bid farewell to EMILY DONLY who served on the leadership team since 2014. It was an exciting time for the newest Year 10 members as they received their Junior Council badges. Congratulations to SHAKIRRA ENRIGHT and AUSTIN CARLTON as they now officially join MELISSA RUGBUR and EMMA TAYLOR in this exciting co-curricular activity.

TIMBER AND WORKING WITH WOOD SHOW

On Friday 15 May 2015, five Year 12 Technology Studies students met at Varsity Station to travel up to the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane to visit the Timber and Working with Wood Show. One of the pavilions was used to show case the latest in wood turning, CNC machining and a variety of other processes.

The students were privy to lathe turning, routering, hand carving, a “wood chop” competition and a host of other demonstrations and displays. Perhaps these are best summed up by the pictures below.

After lunch we returned to Fortitude Valley Station to catch the train back to Varsity in time to co-ordinate with College buses for the return to home. An information and very enjoyable day was had by all concerned. I look forward to a visit to the Timber and Woodworking Show of 2016 with next year’s Year 12 cohort.

MOOTING REGIONAL WINNERS

Congratulations to Hillcrest’s awesome 2015 Senior Mooting Team, comprising three of our Year 11 ‘Legal Eagles’, KATE VAN BRUGGEN, MELISSA RUGBUR and MILLY KARGER, who have been formally announced as Gold Coast winners in the Bond University National High School Mooting Competition! Hillcrest has a proud history in this prestigious competition, which attracts over 100 schools throughout Australia, having won the Gold Coast competition on three previous occasions.

The Hillcrest team, together with teams from St John Paul College and A.B Paterson College, has been selected from a formidable field of 21 schools in the Gold Coast regional competition, which was held on 30 April, to represent the region in Bond University’s National Finals on Saturday, 1 August. This will see the Gold Coast champions pitting their legal skills against the top high school mooters from regional competitions held around Australia, including Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns, with 40% scholarships to Bond University to be awarded to the national champions.

KATE VAN BRUGGEN and MELISSA RUGBUR are two of only nine of the 42 Gold Coast mooters who were awarded Advocacy Merit Awards for excellence in

legal advocacy, which included astutely responding to questions from the mock appeal court ‘judges’ (Bond University law lecturers). This achievement is all the more meritorious on account of our students being in Year 11 and this being their first mooting competition, whilst many of the other mooters are in Year 12 Legal Studies and had the benefit of participating in the competition last year.

Now, it’s onward and upward to the National Finals in August!

DANCE WORKSHOP - QUEENSLAND BALLET

Last week we had SALLY from Queensland Ballet come in to teach our Senior dance students. The 2-hour workshop explored the history and styles of ballet. Students learnt repertoire from famous ballet works including Giselle, Nutcracker and Stars and Stripes.

TSHIRTS FOR THAILAND

Last year many of our current YEAR 12 LEADERS were a part of the mission trip to Thailand.

Even though we are not going this year, we still wanted to find a way to support the great work that Effective Aid is doing in Thailand.

We asked students to donate t-shirts that can benefit students and families supported by Effective Aid in Thailand. Some of these are schools in UN refugee camps along the Thailand Myanmar border and refugee villages in No Boh.

So far, 610 t-shirts have been collected, which is an awesome result and will be a huge blessing to the Thai communities.

Thank you Hillcrest community for your generosity. If you would like to make further donations, please leave them with your class teacher and we will continue to collect.

YEAR 12 STUDENT LEADERS

SENIOR ART STUDENTS - GOMA INSPIRATION EXCURSION

Senior Art Students were treated to a number of inspirational exhibitions at GOMA. The "Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art" showcased the outstanding achievements of senior art students from schools throughout Queensland. The "Sublime" exhibition exhibited contemporary works by artists that create effects of wonder and uncertainty by engaging with sacred architects, sublime geometries and the power of the natural world. Other exhibitions included Indigenous Australian Objects and representations and Japanese Art after 1989. Students returned to school with new ideas that they can appropriate in their current and future practical projects. We look forward to viewing the inspired Hillcrest Art works at the Art Expo in Term 4

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRYOn Monday 18 May, 63 Hillcrest students from Years 4-12 attended the Hinterland Green District Cross Country Carnival. The exceptional talents of students across the Gold Coast was on display with our students putting up a competitive fight in all age divisions. A big congratulations to DIEZEL PRICE who won the 12 Years Boys division - this is a massive achievement and testament to his consistent efforts in running training. A special mention also goes out to LORISSA HINES, ABBEY GIBBS, GABRIEL LOHMANN and ISAAC CULLEN (Shadow) who have all qualified (along with Diezel) for the Regional Cross Country carnival, which will see the top students from every Gold Coast School compete for their place in the Queensland Championships.

SLC INTERSCHOOL SPORT AGCCOn Thursday 28 May, the final week of AGCC Interschool Sport will take place across the Gold Coast. Hillcrest will have 21 teams playing in Grand Finals and it is great to see the effort and enthusiasm of the students. A special thanks to all Parents, Teachers and Coaches who made the first season of our inaugural year in AGCC a success.

CYCLINGIn Week 5 we headed down to Nerang for our Thursday mountain biking sessions. With much anticipation, two of the students picked up trial bikes from Just Ride at Nerang and met us for a rip around the Nerang State Forest. There were a couple tumbles and a little bit of air, but it began to rain which made the tracks a little slippery.

If you are keen to join see MITCHELL OLDFIELD, MR MUTTON or MR HAUCH or simply email. A big thank you to Mr Mutton and Mr Hauch for your efforts.

INTERNATIONAL TEACHING & LEARNINGINTERNATIONAL: IN THE SPOTLIGHT

This weeks' International Spotlight is on our current Female International Captain, MIYOKO NAKAGAWA. Here, she shares about her experiences of being an International Student at Hillcrest.

It's always encouraging to read how International Students feel so welcomed by the Hillcrest community. With thirteen new International Students scheduled to begin throughout Semester 2: Let's keep it up!

MIYOKO NAKAGAWA, JAPAN

I came to study in Australia because I wanted to improve my English. I had been interested in studying abroad since when I was little, because my mum used to live in England and she often told me the story about it. I chose Hillcrest because the location and my agent told me that Hillcrest has a small, warm community. I started studying at Hillcrest on 2013.

After two years at the school, I can say I am so glad that I chose Hillcrest. The teachers always try to help with my assessments and subjects as much as they can and students are always nice to me. I am so thankful for the chance to meet the amazing people in my grade. They are the best. They always help and support me a lot and I don't think I could through these two years without them.

I am not sure exactly what I want to do or I want to be after studying at university, but my goal for the future is travel and discover the world.

OUR YEAR 5 SCIENTISTS

Our Year 5 classes have been learning about states of matter. Students have had the great opportunity to use our SLC Science Labs to conduct a range of experiments using the Scientific Method. It has been great to see students developing an understanding of the need for Scientists to be Safe, Sensible and Scientific.

WHAT TRAITS DO YOU THINK ARE IMPORTANT FOR OUR GRADUATING STUDENTS TO LEAVE HILLCREST WITH?

As part of our ongoing professional discussion, our Teacher Learning Community has been considering some big picture questions. For example what traits do you think are important for our graduating students to leave Hillcrest with and how does this impact our

teaching. These are questions that are important for teachers, parents and students alike to consider.

Our founder considered this question over 30 years ago when then developed the four cornerstones of the College.

• Academic Excellence

• Integrity

• God-Centred Education

• Evangelism

If you would like to share your thoughts on the questions above please feel free to email VINCE WAKEFIELD, Head of Teaching and Learning (P-12) at [email protected]

AITSL - 21 CENTURY LEARNING

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) provides national leadership for the Australian,

State and Territory Governments in promoting excellence in the profession of teaching and school leadership. Hillcrest Christian College aligns itself with AITSL's Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, which comprise of seven standards which outline what teachers should know and be able to do. The Standards are interconnected, interdependent and overlapping.

Recently as part of our teacher learning community session, we watched a short video that explains some of the issues faced by schools today. It is both a challenge and a great opportunity for Hillcrest Christian College to ensure that our focus is always on equipping our students not just for the now but also for the future. If you are interested in watching the video press the link below.
