Manager’s note

What does ART mean to HILLSBORO?The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the new HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works.

Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, nurturing of local arts organizations, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered education in the arts.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture CouncilTo promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community.The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager.

Hillsboro Public Art ProgramPublic art is a powerful tool for meeting the goals of Hillsboro’s community plans. Memorable public places strengthen our community. Often referred to as “third places,” they are the places that are neither home nor work. These social spaces attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, inform us about the history and peoples of our place and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity.

Simply RedFebruary 4 – March 18 What is the meaning of “Red”? The diverse group of artists featured in this exhibit answer this question and explore this theme through a variety of textiles, techniques, and points of view. Following the enthusiastic response to last season’s fiber art exhibit, this all-new body of work also features exquisite artistry which draws upon traditions of quilting while exploring and approaching the art form from a contemporary point of view. The artists featured are members of “High Fiber Diet”, an interest group within the Columbia FiberArts Guild. Take the opportunity to view up close the textures, intricate details, colors and stunning compositions that are “Simply Red.”

p:ear ExhibitDecember 3 –January 28 The Walters gallery collaborates with p:ear in this eclectic show that brings to light the artistic talents of homeless youth, and the professional artists who mentor them. In support of p:ear’s powerful mission to strengthen the lives of homeless and transitional youth with creative mentorships, the exhibit celebrates the wonderful talent and imagination expressed by homeless youth who have participated in p:ear’s individualized mentoring programs, and also features the work of p:ear mentor and watercolor painter Jerry Dickason.

What is p:ear? p:ear stands for Portland: Education, Art and Recreation—and it’s the name of an amazing non-profit organization that builds positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth through education, art and recreation. Each year, p:ear’s programs serve almost 900 homeless and transitional young people between the ages of 15 to 24, working with youth to affirm personal worth and increase overall wellbeing. Youth Art ExhibitApril 1–29 The Hillsboro Youth Advisory Council, in collaboration with the Walters present the 10th Annual Youth Art Exhibit. This dynamic exhibit celebrates the exceptional talent of emerging high school artists in Hillsboro, and also honors the arts educators who support and encourage their work. Artwork in a variety of mediums is highlighted: from painting and drawing, to sculpture and photography. Students are nominated by their individual school art programs to participate and the work is juried by members of the Hillsboro Arts and Culture Council. There will be an opening night reception for students, families and the public to recognize the achievements of the artists selected to represent their school.

Special Lobby DisplayRocks and Minerals of the Pacific NWMarch 4 – April 26The Pacific Northwest is home to many beautiful rocks and minerals. This traveling exhibit highlights some of these beauties and includes specimens of thundereggs, petrified wood, quartz, agate, jasper, metallic ores, the Washington state gem and even Oregon’s state rock. This beautiful display of natural wonders can be found in the lobby of the Walters courtesy of the Rice NW Museum of Rocks and Minerals. www.ricenorthwestmuseum.org

The History of the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center

Located in the heart of Downtown Hillsboro, the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center is built on a site with a rich history of community involvement. In 1941, the Trinity Lutheran Church purchased the land for $2250; members of the parish pitched in and labored together to construct the frame of the building, donating both their goods and talents to create the church building which would later become the Walters Cultural Arts Center in 2004. The beautiful hand-quarried red rock that adorns the exterior of the building was purchased for a steal, with the condition: you dig,

you haul. Volunteers from the church used dynamite to extract the rock and loaded the boulders into their vehicles, making more than 150 trips to haul the stone from Camas, Washington to Hillsboro. Despite the challenges involved with creating and funding a new building from scratch, the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church completed construction of the new church and hosted its dedication on May 8, 1949. To this day, the beautiful craftsmanship of the building has remained a landmark in the Hillsboro community.

The History of the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center

This historic property began its second stage of life when it was proposed as a suitable location for a new cultural arts center for the Hillsboro community in 1999. Civic leaders had long recognized the need for an arts center in the community, and this dream was made possible through the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan. The Hillsboro 2020 Plan represents a collaboration of hundreds of citizens, businesses and government to shape the growth and development of the greater Hillsboro area over the next twenty years. Arts and culture were a high priority during the planning process, not only as an opportunity for redevelopment and growth in the downtown area, but for the positive role that art plays in enriching communities and the individual experiences of citizens.Through a generous donation of $1,000,000 from Glenn and Viola Walters, the City of Hillsboro was able to purchase the church building and property from the Trinity Lutheran Church in December of 2000. Over the next four years, local citizens, businesses, community organizations, and the City of Hillsboro joined together to complete the necessary funding to renovate the building to accommodate the dynamic cultural arts programs that it houses today.

The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for youth and adult art education and training, community access to excellent regional and national artists and speakers, and increased opportunities for local arts organizations, and professional and emerging artists. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered education in the arts. The establishment of the Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center and its programming has enabled the City of Hillsboro to expand and enrich the services available to its residents and the surrounding community.In the spirit of creative expression, the Walters opens its doors to the community at large to say “welcome!” and to invite all to join in the 10th Anniversary celebration of this community hub of art and culture. The Walters offers something fulfilling for all who enter. Whether it’s live music, a gallery exhibit, art classes, or fascinating lectures, this is a place where people of all ages can engage their creativity and discover new passions. Because in the end, it’s all about the inspiration of the everyday people who make this community extraordinary.

Creative Partnershipswith Alex and A’misa ChiuTuesday, February 18 – 7:00 pmIn celebration of the month of love, we invite you to join this inspiring husband and wife duo for a talk on creative partnerships.  Alex and A’misa Chiu are local artists, educators and publishers whose work focuses on community, partnership and creative freedom. Learn about how these dynamic artists support one another within their unique creative practices, and how they go about building a creative community around themselves.  Learn about artistic collaboration and self-publication, and discover simple tips on how to encourage creative partnerships in your own life.

A Life in Opera: The Inside Storywith Soprano Erin McCarthyTuesday, January 21 – 7:00 pmThe Spoken Word Series kicks off the New Year with local opera singer Erin McCarthy for a rare look into one of the most fascinating—and decadent—forms of artistic expression. McCarthy will examine the inner-workings of a performing artist’s life, and recount the powerful personal experiences that have defined her as an artist, including a look into the difficulties with discovering relevance in an art form that can seem removed from the challenges and issues of modern life. This intimate portrayal of opera from the point of view of a practicing artist will take place in the theater, and includes a brief piano performance and aria.

Speakers with a diverse range of interests and backgrounds present free lectures on topics pertaining to culture, art, and creativity. Members of the public are invited to engage by asking questions after the presentation, or by simply enjoying the fascinating ideas and discussions that are brought forth by our speakers.

Second Tuesday: Open Poetry NightIn the Walters gallery 7 - 8 pm, FREE Poets and lovers of poetry alike gather for a casual evening of shared inspiration. All are invited to sign up for the open mic, though quiet listeners are equally welcome and appreciated.

“We All Trespass:” The Making of a Graphic Novelwith multimedia artist and writer Clio SadyTuesday, May 20 – 7:00 pmPortland artist and visual storyteller Clio Sady takes her audience behind the scenes of her latest graphic novel, “We All Trespass.” Follow her journey from start to finish as Sady reveals the layers beneath each comic page, from rough sketches to final inks. As a long-time proponent of local, grassroots media and self-publication, Sady’s work is an empowering testament to the potential of the DIY movement and the growing culture of independent media.

10th Annual Art of the Story FestivalDate and special guest speaker TBAWe are pleased to announce that the Spoken Word program will host a guest speaker in April from the Art of the Story Festival—stay tuned for the date, time and more details! Rocks and Minerals of the Pacific Northwestwith Lara O’Dwyer-Brown, curator of the Rice NW Museum of Rocks and MineralsTuesday, March 18 – 7:00 pmThe Northwest is home to a plethora of captivating rocks, minerals and semi-precious gemstones that draw collectors from around the world. Be enthralled by the natural beauty of thundereggs, sunstones and much more, as you explore the stones and minerals of the region with geologist Lara O’Dwyer-Brown. Get to know the vast range of geologic wonders that can be found locally, and get the chance to see actual stones up close. Brought to you by the Rice NW Museum of Rocks and Minerals. Don’t miss the Rocks and Minerals special traveling exhibit: From March 4 to April 26 you can visit a rocks and minerals exhibit curated by Lara O’Dwyer-Brown in the lobby of the Walters. An 8th grade group guitar class was the trigger that sent Walters music instructor Joe Aloia on a musical adventure that has yet to end. “The guitar just called to me—it felt right in my hands,” he says. Finding freedom, fun, and inspiration in the versatility of the guitar, Aloia devoted himself to the instrument and soon landed his first professional gig at the age of 17. As Aloia continued to develop his skill, earning a BA in Music Studies with an emphasis in Jazz Guitar at the University of South Florida in the process, he found that something important was missing from his experience. “Florida,” he says, “just didn’t seem to offer much in the way of community for its musicians.” Knowing how crucial a strong community is for artists, he knew his adventure would have to take a different turn.“Hillsboro’s another story,” Joe says. Since moving to Oregon, he has found that the local music scene in Hillsboro is the exact community he was looking for: a thriving network of artists who support and encourage creative growth in one another. “There’s a very strong music community here—it’s a life line.” Today, Joe Aloia plays bass with “Two Spirit Jazz,” a well-loved local band that performs frequently at venues and events around Hillsboro and Portland. The term “Two Spirit”

is a Native American concept that the band chose as part of its identity to invoke a culture of acceptance, unique perspectives, and respect for all—it’s a term that honors the human community, and Joe says proudly “the band is all about openness. Music is all about being open.” Aside from performing in a band, Joe Aloia is also a sound technician and a music teacher at both the Walters and at MIR Music. A familiar face in the downtown area, Joe keeps himself involved and does his part to keep the community thriving, connected, and supporting of young and aspiring musicians. “Teamwork is a big thing in the music world,” he says. “You can teach that sense of teamwork through group music lessons and it’s

wonderful to see how the music naturally encourages openness in kids and adults alike.” Joe is a dedicated

teaching artist—and when asked what he has learned from his experiences as a teacher, his answer is “everything—my students have taught me everything: new ways of seeing, new ways of being a musician.” And in return, Aloia takes pleasure in seeing the confidence, wonder, and growth in his students as they discover their own creativity and talent.

Each February since 2008, the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council hosts the Hillsboro Arts and Culture Summit, an event designed for networking, collaboration and celebration of Hillsboro’s vibrant creative community. Attendees are invited to network with local and regional arts and culture leaders and organizations, learn about upcoming art openings, concerts and theater performances, recruit new members and volunteers for their organization or projects, volunteer for a program of interest; discover opportunities to take classes or workshops, talk face-to-face with HACC members and ask questions about upcoming programs and grant opportunities.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture Summit Brings Arts Community Together

On Sunday, April 13, the Tom Hughes Civic Center Plaza will come alive for the 10th Annual Latino Cultural Festival, hosted by the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce. Join the festivities with an afternoon of food, entertainment, art, culture and sports for the entire family.

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, this free festival is designed to connect, embrace and engage the Latino community while providing an opportunity for families of all ethnicities to celebrate Washington County’s diverse cultures, rich with tradition and heritage. With an improved and expanded program, the festival will feature a parade, arts village and a

street soccer tournament all in historic downtown Hillsboro. The Chamber is working to expand the festival to include a marketplace as well as more entertainment for children.

The Chamber is

actively seeking sponsors, exhibitors, non-profit service providers, vendors (merchant and food), and volunteers to make this the biggest and best Latino Cultural Festival ever. This event is made possible through the generous support of sponsors and volunteers. Bringing light and spectacle to the dark of a winter night, the circular stairway of the Hillsboro Civic Center was transformed into a unique canvas for art. Bands of colored light and patterns like glowing comets danced over the

stairway in time to music. To further enhance the experience, viewers could manipulate the light show, altering the speed, brightness or colors of the display. Three viewers could be at the controls at a time, playing together to create a “Symphony of Light.”The animated light projection was the project of artist and game designer Patrick Coan of Portland. Coan used a technique called “projection mapping,” to create a virtual map of the architecture of the plaza, which became the surface for an animated light projection, pulsing with colors that were precisely fitted to the steps and railings.

Originally from California and Utah, Coan came to Portland to pursue a BA in game design. Enjoying the way this field engages both the left and right brain, he is fascinated with creating an artistic work that has a logical system beneath it as it beckons people to become involved. On a personal level, Coan wants his creations to go beyond entertainment to contribute to human well being.For the last two years Coan was involved with an educational video design school for 5 -13 year olds. Game Design Academy is a non-profit that runs game camps that use principles of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) to teach kids how to design games.The City of Hillsboro Public Art Program presented “Symphony of Light” with the goal of using art to strengthen community by animating public spaces and providing engaging art experiences that are welcoming to all. Turning a little used staircase into a pulsating space ship of other-worldly light infused our everyday experience with a moment of magic.

Since 2008, the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council’s Community Arts and Culture Grants have offered financial support for organizations that provide arts and culture experiences to the greater Hillsboro community. In its history of six granting cycles, the HACC has awarded over $135,000 in grant money. Over 40 different organizations have benefited from this support over the years.The Community Arts and Culture Grant Program goals are influenced directly by the Hillsboro 2020 Vision Action Plan and include: raising awareness and supporting existing arts and culture programming that serves Hillsboro residents, fostering collaboration between community members and providing access to arts and culture experiences for those who are underserved.In the past, the HACC’s grant program has given grants to support marketing campaigns, community art projects, and website development, as well as many other programming needs, including costs associated with theatre performances, local concert series, and youth arts education. Last year’s grantees included: Sequoia Gallery + Studio, Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre, the Westside Quilters Guild, HART Theatre, the Hillsboro Symphony Orchestra and many other amazing local organizationsThe application process for the 2014-2015 Community Arts and Culture Grant cycle will open on January 2, 2014 and will close on March 28. CommunitY spotlight: oregon Chorale

Home Town Choir with a World-Wide SoundAfter performing in Hillsboro for over a quarter of a century, the Oregon Chorale has become a centerpiece for music in our local community. Despite the choir’s twenty-eight year history and countless public performances locally and world-wide, conductor Bernd Kuehn is still surprised to meet community members who haven’t heard of the group. The Oregon Chorale is a big and beautiful fifty voice chorus that sings everything from Bach to The Beach Boys to Irving Berlin. You can’t hear them without being impressed by this home-town choir with the power and versatility to sing classical, pop, spirituals, and Broadway show tunes with such skill. This spring, community members will have the chance to hear this in person when the Chorale presents three concerts that will demonstrate their tremendous range.In February, Bernd Kuehn and his singers will have the great honor of performing Beethoven’s Symphony # 7 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in downtown Portland, as a prelude to a performance by the Oregon Symphony. It truly speaks to the skill and stature of this organization to sing in such an incredible venue on such a night.

In March, the Chorale will be performing spirituals for their concert Music Down in My Soul. This inspirational and uplifting concert will be presented at two venues in Hillsboro—the Bethel Congregational United Church of Christ and Hillsboro High School. This concert will be recorded live and will ultimately be available for purchase by the community. This will be the Oregon Chorale’s 4th CD. In June, they will perform a mix of European folk songs and spirituals in preparation for their 6th European tour. Past tours have focused on the British Isles, the Scandinavian countries, the Alpine region, and the Balkans. This summer the group will be touring and performing throughout Eastern Europe. It takes a huge commitment from Chorale members, who pay their own way and have to take two weeks off their “day jobs,” to make the trip. Those who go are richly rewarded with appreciative audiences everywhere they perform in Europe. According to Kuehn, European audiences particularly enjoy spirituals which are a uniquely American musical form.

Kuehn said of the choir, which accepts new members by audition only, “We don’t pay them, but I refer to them as a professional choir because of the way they learn and approach music.” He said the group requires singers to be able to sight read music well, which allows them to focus their rehearsal on “interpretation and blending rather than on learning notes.” And he invites anyone in the community who hasn’t seen them yet, to come and enjoy one of their upcoming concerts.
