FROM THE DESK OF, FR. THOMAS KOYS, M.A.,S.T.L., PASTOR

SAN FRANCISCO (CNS) -- San Francisco's archbishop said June 20 the "toppling and defacing" of a statue of St. Junipero Serra and other statues in the city's Golden Gate Park is the latest example of some people using the cur-rent movement against racial injustice as a reason for violence, looting and vandalism.

"The memorialization of historic figures merits an honest and fair discussion as to how and to whom such honor should be given," said Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileo-ne. "But here, there was no such rational discussion; it was mob rule, a troubling phenomenon that seems to be repeating itself throughout the country."

The Mercury News daily newspaper reported that the night of June 19, a group of about 100 protesters toppled the Serra statue as well as statues of Francis Scott Key and President Ulysses S. Grant and defaced a monument to Spanish writer Miguel Cervantes, author of "Don Quixote."

"Police were called to the area just after 8 p.m., and said people in the group threw objects at the officers. The crowd dispersed around 9:30 with no arrests or reports of injuries," according to the paper.

The protesters' action are being repeated around the country as demonstrators in a number of U.S. cities top-ple statues of Confederate generals and other figures from U.S. history that they consider monuments to white supremacy.

"What is happening to our society?" asked Archbishop Cordileone. "A renewed national movement to heal memories and correct the injustices of racism and police brutality in our country has been hijacked by some into a movement of violence, looting and vandalism."

St. Junipero Serra, who was canonized by Pope Francis Sept. 23, 2015, during his pastoral visit to Washington, is known for spreading the Gospel in the New World dur-ing the 18th century.

The Franciscan priest landed in Mexico, then made his way on foot up the coast of Mexico and to California, where he established a chain of missions that are now the names of well-known cities such as San Diego, San Francisco and Santa Barbara.

He was the first president of the California mission sys-tem, and personally founded nine of the state's 21 mis-sions. It is estimated that during his ministry, St. Juni-pero Serra baptized about 6,000 native people.

In 2015, some people objected to the canonization of the Spaniard, like critics did of his beatification in 1988, be-

cause of questions about how Father Serra treated the native peoples of California and about the impact of Spanish colonization on native peoples throughout the America.

"Everyone who works for justice and equality joins in the outrage of those who have been and continue to be oppressed. It is especially true that followers of Jesus Christ -- Christians --- are called to work tirelessly for the dignity of all human beings. This is a cornerstone of our faith," Archbishop Cordileone said.

"Our dear city bears the name of one of history's most iconic figures of peace and goodwill: St. Francis of Assi-si," he continued. "For the past 800 years, the various Franciscan orders of brothers, sisters and priests that trace their inspiration back to him have been exemplary of not only serving, but identifying with, the poor and downtrodden and giving them their rightful dignity as children of God. St. Junipero Serra is no exception."

The archbishop said the saint "made heroic sacrifices to protect the indigenous people of California from their Spanish conquerors, especially the soldiers," he said.

Even with an infirmed leg that "caused him such pain, he walked all the way to Mexico City to obtain special fac-ulties of governance from the viceroy of Spain in order to discipline the military who were abusing the Indians," Archbishop Cordileone said. "And then he walked back to California."

"St. Junipero Serra also offered them the best thing he had: the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ, which he and his fellow Franciscan friars did through education, health care and training in the agrarian arts," he added. However, the archbishop acknowledged that "historical wrongs have occurred, even by people of goodwill, and healing of memories and reparation is much needed."

"Historical wrongs cannot be righted by keeping them hidden," he said also noted that historical wrongs also cannot be righted "by rewriting the history."

"Anger against injustice can be a healthy response when it is that righteous indignation which moves a society forward. But as Christ himself teaches, and St. Francis modeled, love and not rage (are) the only answer," Arch-bishop Cordileone said.

CONGRESS MUST ACT ON RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on why Congress needs to step up its game:

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, houses of worship have been closed down in most states for months, and in some cases they still are. Even those that are open are under strict restrictions that limit the number of people who can attend ser-vices. With few exceptions, the clergy of all religions have co-operated with the shutdown.

The churches, synagogues, mosques and temples have been hit hard, losing most of their expected revenue during this peri-od. Religious schools have also taken a hit. Catholic diocesan schools, for example, are dependent on funding from their par-ish and diocese for support. Most are now in a precarious situ-ation.

It is commonly said that with rights come responsibilities. The obverse is also true. Houses of worship were held responsible to the president, governors, and mayors in shutting down. The losses that they incurred cannot now be put aside.

The Small Business Administration, under the Trump admin-istration, came through with the Payroll Protection Program, as incorporated in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Se-curity (CARES) Act, and it fortunately covered religious institu-tions. Whether there should be another bill, similar in nature, deserves serious discussion. In the meantime, Congress needs to up its game by helping Catholic schools.

Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez is president of the Unit-ed States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and what he recent-ly said about Catholic schools would no doubt be supported by all his fellow bishops. He addressed the situation they are fac-ing given the restrictions mandated by government.

“Parishes, shut down for three months, have lost millions in collection monies,” Gomez said. “Across the country, we see drop-offs in enrollments for next year, as families fear they will no longer be able to afford tuition.” He rightly stated that so many of the Catholic students who are served come from “minority and low-income families.” That they succeed in school is not debatable.

Archbishop Gomez notes that the U.S. Supreme Court will soon rule on the constitutionality of the so-called Blaine Amendments, legislation that bans public support for religious institutions. These laws were born in anti-Catholic bigotry, and are still operative in 37 states: they were designed to hurt Catholic schools.

Gomez maintains that “Congress and the White House cannot afford to wait” until the high court rules. “They should act now to provide immediate relief to help families handle their educa-tion expenses and also to expand nationwide school-choice opportunities for poor and middle-class families.”

Everything that Archbishop Gomez says is true. Catholic

churches and schools accepted their government-mandated responsibilities and yielded on their First Amendment religious liberties. It is now time for the government to assist these insti-tutions, in the form of grants, to compensate for their compli-ance with government edicts that hurt them financially.

WE NEED TO RECONSIDER DAILY MASS TIMES

By Katie Talarico

Go to any daily Mass and you will see a lot of retired people and stay at home moms. Why? Perhaps it's the times of those Masses. I felt very called to write this article because while working at home during COVID, I realized that suburban Mass times ca-ter to those who do not work professionally 8-5.

Now I am a middle manager who works 50 hours a week. That's the typical professional life. Rarely do we work 40 hours anymore. I typically work 7:30 to 5 or 5:30 each day, and only ONE church in my vicinity had a Mass at 7 AM. ONE. That is baffling to me, and disheartening.

Why?

It's interesting, downtown in the city you will see lots of young-er working people at daily Masses because the times are ear-lier and fit their schedules. In suburban life, not so much. It's mostly the retired, non-working, and stay at home mom popu-lation.

And we wonder why younger people aren't there!?

While there's nothing wrong with that, I wonder if the Church is missing an opportunity with its other populations -- the people working in secular life -- who need the strength of the Eucha-rist to get through each crazy business day (at least I do).

In my suburb, there's a ton of industry and business and virtu-ally NO Masses that cater to the working professional's sched-ule. What an opportunity lost to engage people in daily Mass.

A few times I have attended a 7:30 PM Monday night or Thursday night Mass that is further from my home, and I am astounded by the number of people there of all ages. It oc-curred to me that I do think people have a hunger to go to dai-ly Mass. I just don't think daily Mass times usually fit their needs.

So pastors, please consider changing your Mass times to fit the needs of your younger parishioners and working profes-sionals. Maybe a few earlier, noon, or evening Masses each week please? And if you are resisting that proposal, maybe you should ask yourself why? Is it because your convenience or preference? Is it because your older population is "set in its ways"? Are you missing opportunities to gather more of the flock?

I think so. We hunger for daily Eucharist too, and we are your sheep, but I'm sorry, your Masses don't fit our schedule and work demands.
