2010-11 The 2010-2011 Navy Hockey Team will showcase one of the
youngest teams in Navy Hockey history. These talented young men
exude great character and passion that will give Navy Hockey fans
exciting and intense hockey. From Plebes (freshman) to Firsties (se-
nior) each player has dedicated himself in preparing for this challeng-
ing season as Navy Hockey returns for its 2010 -2011 debut in the
ECHA (Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association). “For these boys
‘wait until tomorrow’ is not a part of their mindset” notes Coach
Mike Fox, back for his 4th season as Navy Hockey’s Head Coach.
This team’s dedication, determination and cohesiveness have the
coaching staff excited about guiding these young players into battle
on the ice.
On Offense Leading the way for Navy’s young team will be returning senior
and this year’s captain Sam Carlson, a three year letter winner who
gives 100% all the time. His experience, leadership and work efforts
set the standard for the 2010 – 2011 Navy Hockey Team.
A versatile player, Sam is an offensive threat as well as a strong
two way player. Classmate and Assistant Captain Stevie Csutoros will
relentlessly pursue Navy’s opponents with an aggressive style of play
that will pave the way for younger players to follow. Stevie, a natural
leader and true role model, is proof that hard work and dedication
leads to success. Senior, Michael Orzetti brings size to the offensive
attack. He will add strength in front of the net in the offensive zone
which should give Navy a goal-scoring edge. Jake Steven-Haas will
continue to be a steady contributor to Navy Hockey with his com-
mitment and willingness to help younger players develop.
Last years leading scorer and offensive player of the year, Mitch
Pulver, will join the team several weeks into the season after recover-
ing from an injury. A junior, Mitch is expected to pick up where he
left off as one of Navy’s top offensive threats. Classmate
Kevin Frederick is poised to be one of this year’s top scorers,
making this his breakout year. Second Class Ryan Hass, who, like Pul-
ver, comes from one of Wisconsin’s Midwest Hockey programs, will
beputtingonaNavyHockeyuniformforthefirsttimeandisposi-
tioned to become a major contributor. Another junior, Jim Tumolo,
enters his third year with Navy Hockey and will be stepping up into
a leadership role. Jim is expected to bring a strong, aggressive threat
toNavy’sopponentsonoffenseasaquickandtenaciousfinisherin
front of the net. Junior and second year player Shane Moran will
continue to develop and is expected to offer size and strength on
offense and defense. Youngster Doug Dietrich returns as one of the
players who saw a lot of ice time as a Plebe and took advantage of
that time to develop his skills. Doug is a versatile, two way player
who has the ability to put the puck in the net. Also playing key roles
are youngsters Liam Kearney and Matt Lutch. Both are hard work-
ing and determined players. Their hard work during the off-season
haspreparedthemtomakeasignificantimpacteverytimetheytouch
the ice. Fellow classmates Scott Wood and Sean Parmigiane have
also made major improvements to their on-ice abilities and will add
speed and strength to the offensive corps. Rob Van Winter is coming
back for his second year after an injury plagued Plebe year. Like his
other classmates, Rob’s off season workouts have positioned him to
play a leading role in Navy’s offensive scheme.
Talented Plebes Tom Krysil, Tom Reed, and Cameron Har-
rigan have shown great promise throughout preseason workouts and
in early play on the ice. These three young players come to Navy
after successful prep and high school careers in New England. Add-
ing to the versatility of the plebe class, Travis Franklin has shown his
ability to play multiple positions. He will be called upon in several
situations. As he adjusts to the college level pace, he will be a player
to watch. Also joining the team on offense are two young players
– freshman Dylan Kelly and sophomore Nathan Arnold. These ad-
ditions to Navy’s offense appear eager and ready to contribute both
now and in the future.
On Defense AssistantCaptainMattRobertsisbackforhisfinalseasonas
one of the team’s core defenseman. As a senior, he will anchor a
young defense lineup and look to continue his steady presence on
the blue line. Roberts will be joined by classmate Jonathan Wheeler
who has overcome injuries from last year and will be back in action
as a steady defenseman and team leader. In addition to being wel-
comed back as a reliable defender, Jon is also capable of effectively
rushing the puck on an offensive attack. Junior Tom Fick enters
his third season and will be asked to shore up the team’s defensive
nucleus. Like Wheeler, Tom will give Navy the ability to control
the puck in all zones, particularly on offense where he is especially
threatening. Junior Gary Beier, who emerged as one of Navy’s most
5
reliable defenders, will rely on his keen defensive instincts to add
balance to a talented defensive squad. Youngster Curtis Bollinger,
who has worked exceptionally hard on his game since last spring,
will be a key contributor on defense with his increased quickness and
mentaldiscipline.PatrickMaguire,whosawsignificantplayingtime
as a freshman last year continues to develop as a player. He will once
again be counted on by the Blue and Gold for his solid and depend-
able defensive skills. Alan Hansen, another returning Youngster, has
been working on his skill set and will also be called upon to bolster
the defensive corps.
Navy Hockey will be adding three Plebes on defense this year.
Ben Berkey brings size, strength and athleticism to the team. Conor
Kearney, twin brother to sophomore Liam Kearney, has quickly
shown his knowledge and ability to play effectively at the college
level. He and Aaron Fleming will be looked upon to play key, every-
day roles on defense this year. Fleming, who brings Junior Hockey
experience to Navy, will offer an offensive threat in addition to his
defensive prowess with his keen ability to see the ice and read the fast
paced action.
In Net This defensive group will be supporting last year’s team MVP,
Second Class Jameson Marshall who will continue to maintain his
place as one of the top goalies in the American Collegiate Hockey
Association (ACHA). Marshall, who diligently works on the small
tactical details of his game, will be pushed by Youngsters Ryan
Dendler and Christian Sandroni. Together they give Navy Hockey
the most depth the team has ever had in the crease. If that is not
enough, Andrew Mills and Ed Klausner - two very talented Plebe
goalies – are expected to quickly challenge the returning net-minders
for playing time.
The Staff Once again, the team is privileged to have the dedicated sup-
port of volunteer Jim Guiberson who is known as the “Anchor” of
the Navy Hockey program. Jim returns as the team’s Equipment
Manager and Director of Game Day Operations. This year he will
be joined by three dedicated and hockey savvy Midshipmen. Young-
ster Christopher Stevens will serve as Head Manager with Plebes
Brandon Cespedes and Clay Cottrell assisting. The managers will
enable Navy Hockey to continue its trademark of competing as a
firstclassorganizationatthecollegiatelevel.
Assistant Coach Matty Thomas will be behind the bench with
Coach Fox for his second year. This year he will be responsible for
running the “D”, a position he will feel quite comfortable in as a
former defenseman on the Navy squad. Coach Thomas, who was
a four year letterman and team captain for Navy Hockey, is a pro-
active volunteer who is completely familiar with the team’s systems.
He is involved in all aspects of team operations, including recruiting,
game video analysis and weight training. A Navy Lieutenant, Coach
Thomas brings an incredible work ethic and wealth of hockey knowl-
edge to the coaching staff.
Assistant Coach Scott Steele will return to the bench as of-
fensive coach after volunteering for a year to help develop the Na-
val Academy’s Women’s Hockey team. His vast hockey experience
from his playing days in the Midwest and from various professional
leagues, make him a valuable asset to Navy Hockey. He inspires the
team everyday with his infectious passion for the game.
AssistantCoachJoshDupree,whoentershisfirstyearasa
volunteer assistant coach, will split his time between the game squad
and the taxi squad. Coach Dupree, a Massachusetts native, also played
for Navy Hockey and understands the importance of skill develop-
ment at the collegiate level. Assistant Coach Brendan Curley remains
involved with the team, providing a great deal of technical critique
and development. Calling on his NCAA Division 1 and professional
level experiences, he will work closely with the younger players to
bringthemuptocollegespeed.Beforeheadingouttoflightschool,
recent graduate and former Navy goaltender Ensign Alex Tidei, will
dedicate time to coaching the goalies.
In addition to a strong coaching staff, Navy Hockey is pleased
to have the assistance of several dedicated volunteers from the Na-
valAcademystaff.CommanderPatrickMurray,theteam’sOfficer
Representative and a four year letterman for Navy Hockey, brings
a wealth of college hockey knowledge and Navy experience to his
leadership and mentoring role with the team. As the team’s Director
of Hockey Operations, he is involved in all aspects of the program,
on and off the ice.
Lieutenant Allen Murphy (Assistant Officer Representa-
tive), Chief Dave Jackel (Senior Enlisted Representative), and As-
sistant Professor Josh Radice (Faculty Representative) also keep the
programintopform,attendingtoteamlogistics,financesandaca-
demic monitoring.
From top to bottom, the accomplishments of the Navy Hock-
ey program, in general, and for the 2010-2011 season, in particular,
will be due to the teamwork and dedication demonstrated on and off
the ice by the coaches, staff members, and players who will carry on
Navy Hockey’s tradition of success.

Mike Fox, Head Coach
2010-11
Coach Fox enters his fourth year at the helm of the United States Naval Academy Men’s Hockey team.
Under his leadership and “TEAM” approach, Navy Hockey has remained a strong contender in Division 1
of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Well known and respected on the national level as a college
hockey coach, he is most recognized for his determination to elevate hockey at the Naval Academy to the high-
est levels possible.
Coach Fox emphasizes the development of skills for team success. He began skating on the frozen ponds
of Minnesotaatagethreeandplayedhisfirstorganizedhockeyinoneof thenation’sfirstandfinestyouth
hockey programs, the Edina Hockey Association. Not long after, he played for Blake School, an institution
steeped in hockey tradition, where he was a four-year letterman and team captain. In college he was a four-year
letterman for the Ohio University Bobcats, playing in the NCAA Division 1 CCHA League. After playing three
years for the Saint Cloud Saints, he started his career as a hockey coach in the Edina Hockey Association,
Coach Fox has a passion for the game that he loves to share. He has coached All-Star Select teams in
Chicago and a state champion junior team in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition, he has worked at hockey camps
throughout the country with several highly regarded hockey coaches.
When the Fox’s moved to Annapolis, he continued his involvement in the game, teaching skating lessons to
children and power skating to local young players. With Lisa, his dedicated wife, the Fox’s built the Navy Youth
Hockey program into a strong and growing organization. Initially starting with about 30 players, they grew the
program to over 180 before handing over the reigns. Today, Navy Youth Hockey has over 250 players and the
program continues his philosophy of emphasizing skills and teamwork.
He and Lisa are very proud of their two children. Brittany, who played on NCAA Division I lacrosse at
Notre Dame on a team that went to the Final Four, will complete physician’s assistant school in the fall of 2010.
Christopher, who graduated from Culver Military Academy where he played hockey and captained the State
Champion lacrosse team, is currently a student at Salisbury University and plays on the hockey team.
The Fox’s are grateful for their exposure to the United States Naval Academy, the Brigade of Midshipmen,
and the tradition and values the institution represents. They look forward to another exciting and successful
navy Hockey season.

Anchors Aweigh“Anchors Aweigh” was written by Lt. Charles Zimmermann, Musical Director of the Naval Academy in 1906, with the lyrics provided
byAlfredH.Milesof theClassof 1906,asafightsongforthe1907graduatingclassinsteadof theusualclassmarchZimmermann
had composed for previous classes. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy game, and when the Midshipmen won the game,
the song became a tradition.
The lyrics are:
StandNavydownthefield,
Sails set to the sky,
We’ll never change our course,
So Army you steer shy.
Roll up the score, Navy,
Anchors Aweigh,
SailNavydownthefield,
And sink the Army,
Sink the Army Grey
Blue & Gold“Blue and Gold” is the name of Naval Academy’s Alma Mater. The song is sung at the conclusion of every sporting event, at the end
of pep rallies and at alumni gatherings. It is also sung in most companies by the plebes at the conclusion of the day; this event is also
referred to as “Blue and Gold,” which is a short gathering to review the day for better or worse with the upperclass Midshipmen.
The lyrics are:
Now, colleges from sea to sea
May sing of colors true;
But who has better right than we
To hoist a symbol hue?
For sailors brave in battle fair,
Sincefightingdaysof old,
Have proved the sailor’s right to wear
The Navy Blue and Gold!
… BEAT ARMY!
