Dia de los Muertos...

This year, Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center added “un altarcito del Dia de los Muertos” to commemorate those Passionists and loved ones who have died over the years. They honored our founder and our Passionist saints using the triptych that is being used for the 300 year celebration of our Congregation. Most of the Passionist memorial cards were of Passionists who lived and ministered at Mater Dolorosa over the last 50 years.

On October 7, the parish communities of Holy Family, St. Mary’s and St. Joseph gathered at Holy Family Church for the first-ever “Green Mass” in the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama. The Green Mass celebrates St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the Earth and honors those who work or volunteer in Green Jobs, protecting our environment. In his homily, Phil Paxton said, “We come to celebrate St. Francis of Assisi and take part in protecting our Earth and the creation that God has created. We must take care and be good stewards.”

The Mass was organized by John Meehan, a parishioner of St. Mary’s Parish in Fairfield, Alabama. John learned of the Green Mass from the Justice & Peace Ministries of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Many thanks to all involved whose tireless efforts brought this event to fulfillment.

On Sunday, October 20, Bishop George Sheltz said Mass and blessed the new St. Paul of the Cross statue in the gardens at Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center. The artist, Mike Kaney, and many of the donors were in attendance.

It was a wonderful way to commemorate the feast day of our holy founder.
