LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS! Preparation for the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition by Jerry Back

This week concludes our two-part study of the Glo-ria. Next week we finish our entire study of the Introduc-tory Rites by examining the Collect, and after this we will dive into the various aspects of the Liturgy of the Word. I don't know about you, but this Year of Renewal of Worship and Prayer is lifting up my heart week after week. I look forward to the weeks and months to come of additional liturgical catechesis from the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Question: How is the Gloria related to the Christmas season? Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: Throughout the Christmas season we hear or sing the familiar carol: “Angels we have heard sweetly singing o’er the plains…” When we gather to celebrate the Eu-charist on most Sundays and feasts, we echo the same song of the angels referenced in this Christmas carol when we sing or recite together the Gloria (Glory to God).

Question: Why is the Gloria called the "Angelic Hymn?" Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: The Gloria has often been called the “Angelic Hymn” because it opens with these words which, according to the Gospel of Luke, the angels sang at Bethlehem on the night of Christ’s birth. It is one of the oldest Christian hymns, modeled after the psalms and canticles of the Old Testament. The ecstatic joy which the Gloria proclaims makes it suitable for all Sundays outside of the seasons of Advent and Lent and for all solemnities and feasts.

The Gloria follows the Act of Penitence, when the assem-bly proclaims its faith in God who is loving and kind and the source of reconciliation and healing. It is a fitting mo-ment to turn to God to offer this ancient hymn of thanks and praise.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------SPOTLIGHT ON THE GIRM * “The Gloria is an ancient hymn in which the Church, as-sembled in the Holy Spirit, praises and entreats the Fa-ther and the Lamb.”

* General Instruction of the Roman Missal, n. 31. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------So, now I better understand why my heart fills up with joy and praise for God when I sing the Gloria. And while I'm not an angel (a creature that is 100% spirit), I believe the spirit part within my body rejoices like an angel when I sing along with the laity and choir here at Holy Name.

FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Congratulations to our young peo-ple who received the gifts of the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday, May 6th. The Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco, Most Rev. William Justice, officiated at the Confirmation Mass.

A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife stayed home. He wanted her to see what he went through so he prayed: “Dear Lord, I go to work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at home. I want her to know what I go through, so please allow her body to switch with mine for a day.” God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man's wish. The next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman. He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches, drove them to school, came home and picked up the dry cleaning, took it to the cleaners and stopped at the bank to make a deposit, went gro-cery shopping, then drove home to put away the groceries, paid the bills and balance the check book. He cleaned the cat's litter box and bathed the dog. Then it was already 1 P.M. and he hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, vacuum, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor. Ran to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with them on the way home. Set out cookies and milk and got the kids organized to do their homework, then set up the ironing board and watched TV while he did the ironing. At 4:30 he began peeling potatoes and washing vegetables for salad, breaded the pork chops and snapped fresh beans for supper. After supper he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded laundry, bathed the kids, and put them to bed. At 9 P.M. he was ex-hausted and, though his daily chores weren't finished, he went to bed. The next morning he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said, "Lord, I don't know what I was thinking. I was so wrong to envy my wife's being able to stay home all day. Please, oh please, let us trade back." The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied, "My son, I feel you have learned your lesson and I will be happy to change things back to the way they were. You'll just have to wait nine months, though. Congratulations, you’re expecting!” Happy Mother’s Day!

HOLY NAME SCHOOL S t. Magdalene of Canossa, foundress of the Canossian family of the Sons and Daughters of Charity, was born at Verona, Italy, on 2 March 1774. Her father, a wealthy marquis, having died when she was barely five and her mother, Marchesa Teresa

Szluha, having remarried soon after, the young girl was brought up by an uncle and given a good education. In 1799 Magdalene started her work for poor girls and, the following year, began to provide some of them with accommodation. In 1803, she opened her first school and wanted to live there but returned home in deference to her family’s wishes. In 1808 she founded her reli-gious congregation for the educational and health care apostolate. At the time of her death on 10 April 1835, there were five houses of Canossian Sisters. Today the congregation has almost 4,000 members in 395 hous-es in many countries. Magdalene was beatified by Pope Pius XII on 7 December 1941 and the miracle required for her canonization was officially recog-nized 11 December 1987. As the Holy Father, John Paul II, by whom she was canonized on 2 October 1988, said, she was one who knew how to lose her life for Christ…….., one who was, so to say, devoured by charity: charity towards God even to the heights of mystical experience and charity towards neighbor carried to the farthest extremes of self-gift to others. She understood well that true piety which touches the heart of God consists in “breaking unjust fetters, undoing the thongs of the yoke, letting the oppressed go free, sharing bread with the hungry and shelter-ing the oppressed poor.” Indeed, it was her passionate love for Christ Crucified teaching her to love her fellowmen! The heartbeat of Magdalene’s apostolic choice vibrates through the institution she founded and which she wished to be dedicated and consecrated to charity. She lived during the Napoleonic times of revolu-tions, invasions and restorations, which left a trial of evil behind them. She wished to provide for all these, the hallmark of her personal charisma being her ability to distinguish “Christian Charity” from philanthropy. The cultural changes of today have brought in their own wake crops of evils – drugs, alcoholism, the aloneness of the old, abortion, violence, euthanasia, acute disregard for the weak and the neglected, and a general disrespect for human life. St Magdalene meets these challenges today through her Sons and Daughters of Charity. With her as their model of “being all things to all men”, the Canossians run schools for all age groups as well as special schools for the blind, the handicapped and slow-learners, for those of the silent world, training centers for nurses and obstetricians, and day care schools. All these flourish and through them all the Canossians “make God known so that He may be loved”. In vil-lages they work for the social uplift through informal education, “grihinis” and “mahila mandals”, dispensaries, mother-child projects, preventive health care and leper clinics. They also dedicate themselves generously in parishes and Sunday Schools (“Oratory”) to serving the poor, the youth, the marginalized, realizing today the objectives that St Magdalene had long foreseen for them. The two characteristic dimensions of the foundation, vision and work of St Magdalene are Charity and Universality – “charity” which, says Magdalene, has as its object the working out of one’s sanctification imitating Jesus Crucified; and “universality” in as much as charity is exercised towards each person without excluding anyone either rich or poor. Reflection: “Put your trust solely in God, so that even if you were to lose everything you would find all in Him!” St. Magdalene of Canossa
