Fourth Sunday of Advent

INTO OUR HOMES Only a few days remain before the world will pause for the celebration of Christmas. Over the course of the past year we have been nourished at the table of God’s word and feasted on the Gospel of Saint Luke. We have listened to parables, been summoned to take up our crosses and follow Christ, and been schooled in the way of disciple-ship. Since the beginning of Advent the Church has turned our attention to Matthew’s Gospel. Today Matthew opens the doors of Saint Joseph’s house, as well as his dreams, and tells the story of the events leading up to Jesus’ birth. The final line of today’s Gospel is worth noting: “When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home” (Matthew 1:24). Today is a day to consider our devotion to and appreciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in our faith lives. Today is a day for us to take her into our homes. PREPARING A PLACE FOR CHRIST’S BIRTH Mary stands as a reminder that nothing is impossi-ble with God. This young woman’s life was thrown into confusion when the angel announced that she, although a virgin, would be the mother of God’s Son. She is the one to whom we can look when our lives are thrown into confu-sion. She gave herself over to the power of God. This did not mean that she would live her life free from fear and pain. We all know the rest of the story—how she would watch her son suffer and die. Mary is a source of comfort for all who have lost children. We can look to her for com-fort in times of grief and pain. How fitting that we focus on the Virgin Mary on this final Sunday of Advent. When we open the doors of our hearts and welcome Mary into our lives, what we really do is prepare a place where the Lord is born to us again. Today’s Readings: Isaiah 7:10–14; Psalm 24:1–6; Romans 1:1–7; Matthew 1:18–24 Copyright © 2007, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

CANOSSIAN CORNER: The Canossian Institute is a missionary congregation, for St. Magdalene had a great desire to spread the Good News in every part of the world. “Charity is the fire that embraces the whole

world”. This was a conviction that she cherished and liked to share with other members of the Institute. In fact, the fire she enkindled in the Institute has remained a living heritage, and the Sisters continue throughout these years to have a great zeal to bring the Good News to as many people as possible. The Canossian missionary history will be a good proof of this spirit.

From the Office of Religious Education and Homebound Ministry: A very Blessed Christmas to all of our students and their parents. Special love-filled wishes to our Catechists, who give of their time, talent, treasure and love. Christ holds peace in his hands, may that peace be be-stowed in your hearts, because you share the Spirit of Christmas with our children. Thank you, and may your Christmas be filled with our Savior’s blessings. Thank you also, to our Homebound Eucharistic Ministers who bring the Eucharist and the love of Jesus to our home-bound parishioners in their homes. May Christ our Lord bless each of you with His love, peace and joy. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all, and thank you very much! Sr. Connie

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the ties of affection and authority that bound Europe’s Catholics unraveled in the sixteenth century, many cultures lost time-honored customs of faith. Some customs proved to be especially difficult for the reformers to wrest away from the people, especially those celebrated in the home. This week in Sweden, a country where the Catholic Church was disestablished four hundred years ago, a Catho-lic martyr from Sicily is the most beloved figure. St. Lucia, Lucy, is celebrated on December 13. The long-story-short is that Lucy was a Christian whose father wanted to marry her off to a pagan fellow, and she rejected her father’s authority. To make an example of her, her father had her killed. In the course of the brutal martyrdom, Lucy lost her beautiful eyes, but her vision was miraculously restored. The candles worn today by the eldest daughter of the family are tokens of the fire that refused to harm the saint. So this patroness of light and clear vision is revered on the shortest, darkest days of the Nordic winter. Before the reform of the Gre-gorian calendar in the sixteenth century, December 13 was the winter solstice. Today, young girls appear in the morning wearing lighted candles on their crowned heads (battery-operated now after many mishaps), and serve sweet rolls and coffee to everyone in the house. For the Swedes, who are not churchgoers, the “Lucias” are the official heralds of the holiday season and a sign of everyone’s yearning for more light in this world. Europe once abounded with customs like this; the survival of this custom in Scandinavia is a sign of God’s grace, and how fertile the soil is to receive the true message of Advent. —Rev. HOLY NAME SCHOOL LAYETTE DRIVE All of the students are participating in the Christ Child Layette Drive. Students bring in new, newborn size clothing, blankets, disposable dia-pers, booties, etc. and place them around the large crèche in the main hall of the school. These items will be given to the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women to benefit needy mothers and their new-borns throughout the year. Over the years, Holy Name School has been one of the most generous donors to the Christ Child Layette Drive. BORDERS’ GIFT WRAP Congratulations to our 8th grade students and parents who wrapped gifts at Border’s Stonestown this weekend. They brought in $1167.65 in tips which will be used for end of the year 8th grade activities! TONER/CARTRIDGE RECYCLING Save your old cell phones, video games and dvd movies that have been replaced during the holidays! Bring them to school for recycling. We received a check for $69.25 for November collections. Thank you, Justin Lam and Casey Chu, of 8A, for preparing the boxes for shipping! THANK YOU Thank you, everyone, for your support and prayers for Mrs. Chiolo’s happy occasion of her daughter’s wedding. Also, thank you for prayers for Mrs. Cavallero’s sad loss of her dad and mother-in-law. We appreciate your kindness. Mrs. Chiolo & Mrs. Cavallero

Dear Holy Name Family, We are so blest here at Holy Name School. We have so many things to celebrate. First, congratulations to Mr. Eiras and all of our wonderful students. The Christmas Concert on Thursday night was spectacular. I don’t know of one other elementary school where the students have been given the opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra. It was such a joy to share this evening with you all. You were a three star audience to celebrate and appreciate the students and musicians. If you have an opportunity this week, or when we get back in January, be sure to stop off and visit the newly relocated library. I’m sure you will enjoy how welcoming, warm and comfortable it is for our students. A very big thanks and appreciation is sent to Mrs. Eskandar and her husband, Ed, who worked tirelessly for weeks getting things ready for the move and then with additional help from our faithful Mrs. Mallarino and our library volunteer, Marge Hagan, put the finishing touches on our beautiful new space last week. Reminder: Put Thursday, January 10, 7 p.m. Parent Guild Meeting on your calendar. We will be inviting any of you interested in helping us “imagine” a library/multi-media space. We need the creative minds of all of you especially those who know design, libraries, com-puter/media or grant writing. Don’t miss out on this exciting conversa-tion. Pre-school Update: ABC’s has begun to move in a few sup-plies. They have a parent who is a painter, just like our wonderful Mr. Sergio Herrera (father of Omar in Gr. 4), who will work with the director and some of their parents in painting the walls and bathrooms over the holidays, before full move in. They will be mimicking our paint color used in the Kindergarten and hall walls. I’ll keep you posted with up-dates after we return from our Christmas break. Our next painting project: We are extending the time of our downstairs hall painting to include most of the holiday break time. Many, many thanks go to Vince De Lucca who is coordinating this effort. Many hands will make light work, especially with the prep work – washing down walls, sanding etc. Please call Vince at (415)810-7788, if you can help. He will be working out a schedule with volunteers. Christmas Eve Children’s Mass, 5 p.m. I look forward to see-ing all of you who are able to attend this wonderful celebration of the Christ Child’s birth. May your holiday season be blest a hundred fold. Blessings, Ann Meyers Manchester, Ed.D. OOPS AND APOLOGIES! We were remiss in thanking John Gill, father of Julian, kindergarten, for giving his time to help with the painting last week.
