FEAST OF ST. MAGDALENE OF CANOSSA The Canossian Sisters and Lay Associates invite Holy Name parishioners to the celebration of the liturgical feast day of St. Magdalene of Canossa, on Tuesday, May 8th. It will be held at the 9:00 AM Mass, with Holy Name School students and staff. A simple reception will follow, in the Flanagan Center, immediately after Mass. Magdalene, Marchioness of Canossa, was born in Verona, Italy on March 1, 1774, of a noble and wealthy family, she was the third of six children. Through painful events such as her father’s death when she was 5 years old, her mother’s second marriage two years later, illness and other sufferings, the Lord guided Magdalene in her life of loving service to God’s people. She left Canossa Palace to begin her religious life on May 8, 1808. She died on April 10, 1835, having founded convents and apostolic works in Verona, Venice, Milan, Bergamo and Trent, all in northern Italy. On December 7, 1941, Pope Pius XII proclaimed her “Blessed”. She was canonized a saint by Pope John Paul II on October 2, 1988. Please pray that many more young men and women will follow their vocations as Canossians Sister, priest or brother, or Lay Canossians.

Fifth Sunday of Easter

BUILDING UP THE CHURCH It is certainly an important ministry to go and make

disciples; it is equally important to ensure the continued strengthening of these disciples. Paul and Barnabas, in our reading from Acts today, are not only adding new disciples to the church of Christ. They are making sure that the work of the church will continue by appointing elders and other-wise organizing these new communities of faith. Structure is essential to the work of the church. Just as the skeleton gives form to the body, the organizational structure of the church ensures that the church stays true to its mission, that new disciples are well formed in the message of salvation, that the work of the church can continue from generation to generation.

THE WORK OF THE CHURCH Today’s second reading, from Revelation, and the

Gospel reading from John together help us to understand the radical nature of Christ’s message of love. In Revelation, we are told that now the sea, the symbol of the chaos of the past, is no more. The new Jerusalem has come down from heaven and is joined with humanity for all time. Christ dwells within each of us, the baptized, in a radical new way of joining together. Christ is here, now, for all time, within each and every one of us. This is why Jesus’ commandment of love is so very new. We are commanded to love each other as Christ loves, for when we love, we reveal Christ’s presence among us. This is a love beyond any human con-cept of love, a love without concern for cost, a love that calls us to feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, and grant mercy to enemies. This is the love demanded of us by our baptism, the radical love of others as we are loved by God. This love is our work, the work of the church of Christ on earth. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Acts 14:5-18; Jn 14:21-26 Tuesday: Acts 14:19-28; Jn 14:27-31a Wednesday: Acts 15:1-6; Jn 15:1-8 Thursday: Acts 15:7-21; Jn 15:9-11 Friday: Acts 15:22-31; Jn 15:12-17 Saturday: Acts 16:1-10; Jn 15:18-21 Sunday: Acts 15:1-2, 22-29; Ps 67; Rv 21:10-14, 22-23; Jn 14:23-29

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Fifth Sunday of Easter Thursday: Blessed Damien Joseph de Veuster of Molo-

ka’i Saturday: Ss. Nereus and Achilleus; St. Pancras

Father Damien, also Blessed Damien of Molokai and born Joseph de Veuster (January 3, 1840 – April 15, 1889), was a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium and member of the Congregation of the Sacred

Hearts of Jesus and Mary, a missionary religious order.

Damien is most noted for his devotion to caring and minis-tering to people with what was then widely known as lep-rosy, forced by government-sanctioned medical segregation, living on the island of Molokai in the Kingdom of Hawaii. In the Roman Catholic and Anglican traditions, as well as other denominations of Christianity, Damien is considered the spiritual patron for Hansen's Disease, HIV and AIDS patients as well as outcasts. As the patron saint of the Ro-man Catholic Diocese of Honolulu and of Hawaii, Father Damien Day is celebrated statewide on April 15. Upon his beatification towards canonization and sainthood by Pope John Paul II in 1995, Damien was given a memorial feast day, celebrated on May 10 on the church calendar and was conferred the official title of Blessed Damien of Molokai.

Several memorials have been made to Damien worldwide. The Father Damien Statue honors the priest in bronze at the United States Capitol while a full size replica stands in front of the Hawaii State Capitol. In 2005, Damien was honored with the title of De Grootste Belg, chosen as The Greatest Belgian throughout Belgian history in polling con-ducted by the Flemish public broadcasting service, VRT.

In both ecumenical religious and non-sectarian communi-ties, Damien is being adopted as the symbol of how society should treat HIV/AIDS patients in defiance of the miscon-ceptions of the disease, much like leprosy treatment was an outgrowth of misconceptions. Several Damien Centers have been established worldwide to serve people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

Fr. D’Angelo to have Knee Surgery On Monday, May 7, 2007 I will have arthroscopic surgery on my right knee. A few years ago you may recall Fr. Charles Puthota had the same surgery on his right knee. (An occupational hazard??? Too much genuflecting and praying on our knees???) In November of 2006 I noticed swelling on my right ankle and knee. I was experiencing some pain and “cracking” sounds from my knee similar to when you “crack” your knuckles. After ruling out a possible blood clot with an EKG I had an x-ray and then a MRI. It was discovered that I had torn cartilage on my knee. After trying some anti inflammatory medication and cortisone shot with little positive results and after consultation with the orthopedic surgeon I decided to have this “simple” procedure to correct the problem. A typical procedure is about 1-1 ½ hours as an outpa-tient. I am told I will have to be off my foot for 7 –10 days while at the priest house, With the help of a pair of crutches I hope to be able to get around near the end of the week. I ask and thank you for your prayers. Fr. Don
