GOD IS WITH US The Book of Wisdom tells us that the spirit of God is in all things. What a wonderful thought, and what a wonderful image to keep in front of us as we travel down life’s road. For if the path is revealed in the treading, it’s good to know that God is with us—and all around us—every step of the way. But Paul knows that this divine presence is not timid. In-stead, God calls out to us, and Paul prays that we, along with the Thessalonians, might be made worthy of that call. And who knows more about God’s call than Zacchaeus, the tax collector? Jesus called him out of a tree, for goodness’ sake. Or perhaps more correctly, as we reflect upon the end of today’s Gospel read-ing, for heaven’s sake.

A very special thank you is extended to Most Rev. Bishop Ignatius Wang for celebrating our Thanksgiving Mass, and to Rev. Donald D’Angelo, Rev. Te Van Nguyen and Rev. Dominic Lee for concelebrating. Thank you to all the par-ticipants at Mass and at the dinner which went very well. More than 200 people, including friends from eight Parishes in the Archdiocese attended. Their presence and support meant so much to us. Our gratitude also goes to the many people who donated prizes, contributed musical and danc-ing performances, designed floral arrangements, helped with the set-up and clean-up or gave a big hand in various ways to make the celebration a great success. Dear Holy Name Parent/s, A very special thank you is extended to our fourteen Eighth Graders and one Seventh Grader who represented Holy Name at the Harvest Festival hosted by Playmate Coopera-tive Nursery School this past Saturday. These great young people arrived in uniform, helped direct activities and gave between two to six hours each to spread the good news about Holy Name School into that community. HELP NEEDED WITH WEBSITE Holy Name School’s website needs updating. If there is anyone who is interested in helping or working on the school’s website, your input would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested, please call the school office. BOOK FAIR The Book Fair is coming to Holy Name! Because of the possible imminent move in of ABC’s (preschool), the book Fair will be in the art room this year. Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

THE SETUP

Poor Zaccheus! In today’s tale, Luke sets him up as an unbelievably nasty villain, a sinner par excellence, if there can be such a thing. He’s a tax collector; moreover, he’s the chief tax collector, the head sinner. He’s also a wealthy one, so he’s probably very good at extortion, cheating, oppress-ing the poor, and all sorts of foul behavior. He’s short, con-sidered a physical malady and sign of God’s disfavor in his culture. To top it off, he lives in Jericho, a city condemned by Joshua when the Israelites settled in the Promised Land. But Jesus knows and sees what the author of Wisdom has told us earlier today: that the imperishable spirit of the Lord, lover of souls, is in all things, even in this reprehensi-ble little knave. And this Jesus, getting nearer and nearer his destiny in Jerusalem, not only allows Zaccheus to speak with him, but seeks him out. Jesus boldly invites himself to stay under Zaccheus’ roof and incorporate himself into the life of this malefactor. No wonder the people who were looking on started to grumble!

AN EARLY—OR LATE—CHRISTMAS Luke’s Gospel is the source of what has become known as “the” Christmas story. Two of the major themes of Luke’s infancy narrative are joy and the coming of salva-tion. Zaccheus today welcomes Jesus with joy, and Jesus announces that salvation has come. In the scene that pre-cedes this one (we don’t hear it at Sunday Mass), salvation comes when Jesus heals a blind man just outside Jericho. Jesus has transformed the city of condemnation into one of vision and light. The presence of this Jesus is enough to remind Zaccheus of his sins so he might, as Wisdom re-minds us, abandon his wickedness and come to believe in the Lord by living an upright life. He makes promises to Jesus that his future actions will be fair and just. We never find out whether he keeps these promises, but the signifi-cance of the passage is that the faith of Abraham super-sedes the condemnation of Joshua; the obstacles to grace in Zaccheus’ life are not as important as the relentless, seeking, saving heart of the Lord, lover of souls.
