SVDP 5th SUNDAY COLLECTION THANK YOU

We provide financial help to SVDP pro-grams and other conferences dealing directly with per-sons in need. We provide financial assistance through the SVDP twinning program with an SVDP Confer-ence in the Philippines. If you know of any parishioner who may need our assistance, please notify the staff at the Pastoral Center so we may provide the assistance needed. Thanks again for supporting our 5th Sunday collections. You are remembered in our prayers at our weekly meetings. Our most recent financial report is shown be-low for your review.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM This program is designed for children in grades K-8th attending public school.

Catechism classes (CCD) are held: Saturday 10AM-12 Noon or

alternate choice Tuesday 5:15-6:30 PM All children who have already received the Sac-raments are asked to attend. Knowing the basics of our Catholic teachings and religion requires more than three or four years of Religious Education, because it is the Formation of faith for life. The program includes instruction for First Eucharist and Confirmation. We had a good number of children in 2006-2007, however, we feel that there are still many children in our parish boundaries attend-ing public schools who are not attending our Religious Ed. Program. Please help us spread the word. It’s eve-rybody’s responsibility. RCIA for Children and Youth ages 7-17 who need the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist: Tuesday 5:15-6:30 PM Parents may register at the Pastoral Center (1555 39th Ave), Monday to Friday between 9:30-3 PM. For more information, please call Sr. Connie at (415) 664-8590 or (415) 753-6685 (evenings).

IGNATIAN SPIRITUAL EXERCISES IN DAILY LIFE We take bodily exercises to strengthen our bodily muscles, the blood circulation, the good functioning of the heart and so on. Similarly we make the Ignatian Spiritual exercises in Daily Life to strengthen the faculties of our soul, our mind, our will, as well as to deepen our faith in God and our rela-tionship with God. These exercises are offered to people who are unable to set aside a stretch of 8 days or 30 days to make the long Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius, but are willing to devote some 30 minutes a day for their spiritual well be-ing. Dates: All Tuesdays from Oct. 2, 2007-Nov. 27, 2007 Time: 7:30-9:15 PM Place: Holy Name Pastoral Center Maximum No. of Participants: 10 (All must have their own Bible) For more information or to register, please contact Sr. Stella or Sr. Esther at (415) 664-8590

VOCATION CORNER God does not have a phone: At every twist and turn of life, however, there is a voice and a call. What is that we must hear? Calls to prayer, calls to service, calls to rela-tionship. God does not stop talking. The things we have to hear, sometimes take us into situations in life where young people have heard Gods’ call. You might choose to play deaf, but the voice will still be there and it is sim-ply an invitation to let your faith speak to others! Choosing the road less traveled does not mean you travel alone! Please read: 1 Samuel 3,1-18

Happy 40th Birthday

Fr. Angel!!! October 2nd

Dear Holy Name Parent/s, WOW! What an amazing day Sunday was. Our International Food Fair was spectacular. Positive de-scriptive words pale in comparison to the reality of this great event. A 3 Cheer Hurrah to the chair, Alice Ho Seher, (mother of Zeph, Gr.7) and to all of the cooks, servers, decorators and set up/clean up crew members. This was such a great way to begin our year, the Spirit Mass followed by this fabulous celebration of our cul-tural (and culinary) richness. We are in the process of updating some of our Web e.g. Teacher Wish List. In the meantime however, a big thank you to David Valle-Schwenk (father of Benito, kindergarten) who after looking at that page has brought in a DVD player and CD changer for classroom use. We are blest with the generosity of all of you. September 27th, Thursday, faculty and staff will be hard at work preparing our WCEA (Western Catholic Education Association)/WASC (Western As-sociation of Schools and Colleges) self study. We will have another work day on January 18 and a final one in the fall of next year. At the conclusion of all this, we will have an on site visit by a team of educators whose role is to affirm what we have written in our self study and to make recommendations to help us become even better and stronger. You will be invited to help us with the self study because you are a key part of what makes us great. There will be more to come on this as the months progress. This work day is followed on Friday, September 28th, by an Archdiocesan Teacher In-service Day for all elementary and secondary facul-ties. We will be at Serra High School for that event. Happy day and happy sales to all. Blessings,

Ann Meyers Manchester, Ed.D.

ATTENTION DRIVERS Please keep the safety of our students in mind while driving. U-turns made while children are crossing are dangerous. It is safer to go around the block rather than risk an accident.

VISION SCREENING We need your help! We are looking for parents who can help us with the Vision Screening. This is a very rewarding way to help out in the preventive health of the children! You will be trained to perform the vision screenings, so previous experience not required. If you are an optometrist or a nurse, we could certainly use your help as well. For more information, please call Lisa Kwai Ben at (w) 476-0998 or (c) 596-1243 or e-mail: [email protected]. Thank you for your support!

HIGH TEA Please remember to make your reserva-tion for the Science Committee’s second High Tea event on Sunday, October 21st, at 1:30 p.m. in the Pastoral Center.

Flyers are available from the school office. Seat-ing is limited. The menu is prepared by a profes-sional chef. INTERNATIONAL FOOD FAIR Thank you to all the International Food Fair booth chairs for all their help in making our first Holy Name International Food Fair such a success. Kudos to: Myra Alcaide, Glenda Cox, Mona Beltran, Alma Sullivan, Ana Rosario, Roberta Beach, Cristina Visus, Jean Thompson, Amy Lee, Norman Yep, Diana and Dennis Cresci, Hayat Mariani, Aline Lebbos, Lada Tsibulya, Elizabeth Twaszewicz, Tina Huynh, Alcira Presa, and Nora Dunne. A big thank you to Extended Care staff member, Brian Dea, who bravely placed all the flags in the gym. Lastly, a round of applause to all the enthusiastic 8th graders that helped with the set-up and clean-up, the wonderful parent volunteers who served, and to the wonderful Holy Name cooks who contributed to many of the delicious dishes. We hope everyone enjoyed the wonderful cuisines and the bountiful community spirit that day! International Food Fair Committee Chair, Alice Ho Seher
