THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 29, 2017
DearParishFamily,
IntheGospel thisweekend, ourLordremindsusof thetwogreatestcommandments–toloveGodwithallourheart,soul,andmindandtoloveourneighborasourselves.Theseareeasywordstosaybutmuchmoredifficulttoputintopractice.Thekeywordinthefirstcommandmentis“all.”Certainly,weloveGod, butGod is asking for total and complete surrender inourlove.Thereisnoholdingback.Wecannothaveadividedheart;otherwise,wereallydonotloveatall.
Thatbecomes thedifficultpart.Arewewilling togiveGodour“all”withthewholeofourlives?Perhaps, wearefearfulofdoingso?Perhaps, webelievethatifwedothereisnothingleft. That is a fallacy. It is only becauseGod first loves usintobeingthatwehavethecapacitytoloveGodandothers. That second greatest commandment of loving our neighborasourselves isnot inconsistentwith thefirstof lovingGod;rather,itiscomplementary.WearenotgivingGodour“all”unlessweareatthesametimelovingourneighbor.Thisisnotan“either/or”butrather,a“both/and”proposition.
Inasmuchasweareallmade in the imageand likenessofGod,aswewereremindedlastweekintheGospelwhenJesuscalled for us to repay “toGodwhat belongs toGod,” thenlovingourneighborislovingGodinwhoseimageandlikenesswe all aremade. And for a tutorial on how to love and theattributesoflove,welook,ofcourse,totheoftencitedletterofSaintPaultotheCorinthians.Toloveourneighbormeanstobepatient,kind,notjealous,notinflated,notpompous,notrude,notseekingourowninterests,notquick-tempered,ornotbroodingoverinjuries.Toloveourneighbormeansrejoicinginthetruth.Toloveourneighbormeansweneverfail.
Ifwerereadthatlastparagraphafewtimes, weprobablycometotherealizationthatweallhavefailedat timestoloveourneighbor and, therefore, failed to love God with our “all.”Even so, that is not a cause for despair. The grace ofGod,freelygiventous,canhealusandhelpusbeginagain.Afterall,Godhasalwaysbeenpatientandkindwithus,evenifwehavenotbeensowithGodorourneighbor.
So,aswecontinueonourpilgrimageoffaithand,duringthiscomingweek, celebrate theSolemnityofAllSaints and thecommemorationofAllSoulswhohavegonebeforeus,letusrecallhowthesaintslovedGodandneighborwiththeir“all”andpraythat thosesoulslongingtojointheminheavenaregrantedthegiftofGod’slight,peaceandloveforalleternity.
