In order to continue these generous works, we are reaching out to each parishioner to assist us in sustaining our mission. Like many of you, each year Holy Trinity Parish faces a budget-balancing act. This weekend we will kick-off our 2017 Parish Pledge. In order to keep up with increased costs, we have raised our pledge goal by 10% to $3.3 million. The Parish Pledge is vital to supporting the various services, ministries and programs that our Parish is called to provide. Did you know that we are a Parish with over 90 various ministries and groups, all working together to serve the faith and to promote justice? Our outreach includes our sister parish in Haiti, recently devastated by Hurricane Matthew and the sponsoring of a refugee family from the Middle East. Our Religious Education program serves over 750 children, including those with learning challenges. In addition, Holy Trinity celebrates numerous weddings, Baptisms and funerals each year. Your contributions to support these happening are inspiring, and your generosity ensures that we are a giving and vibrant community. The 2016 Parish Pledge ends December 31. Over the past three years, our expenditures have increased without additional revenue from pledges. We must rely on each of you to participate in the Parish Pledge and to consider increasing your commitment by 10% from last year. As you see in the chart, our pledges have decreased over the last four years. We now face an issue of sustainability. Please look for your Parish Pledge letter from Father Kevin in the mail and remember that pledging makes it possible for Holy Trinity to plan financially and better steward your gift. Thank you to those parishioners who have fulfilled their pledge for 2016. You have empowered your church to cultivate the positives of our Parish and community. 2017 Parish Pledge Kickoff

As we wind down from a fruitful year, we reflect on all the good we have accomplished as a Parish. We serve the needs of our 3,500 registered households and care for our brothers and sisters in need in the greater Washington area.

Please look for your Parish Pledge letter from Father Kevin in

the mail and remember that pledging makes it possible for

Holy Trinity to plan financially and better steward your

gift. Thank you to those parishioners who have fulfilled their

pledge for 2016. You have empowered your church to

cultivate the positives of our Parish and community. We need

every household to participate in supporting this effort. Gifts

of any amount are welcome. Coming together, with the

support of all, will help us to reach our goal.

Holy Trinity is a Catholic parish sponsored by the

Society of Jesus. We share the Society's mission to

serve the faith and to promote justice. As disciples of

Christ, we seek to be transformed by the Holy Spirit

through our celebration of Eucharist and our

practice of Ignatian spirituality into a welcoming and

prayerful community that shares God's life and love

with each other and the world.

MISSION STATEMENT

PARISH CENTER

Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Washington, DC | www.trinity.org November 13, 2016 | page 2

What a difference “falling back” an hour makes! The shorter days and the longer nights combined with the crisp air and falling leaves prove that November is really here.

Despite the warm and sunny days we have recently enjoyed, can you believe that we are closer to winter than to autumn? And the stores stocked with their commercial displays remind us that Christmas is just around the corner.

Our Garden Club made their last gig of digging into the soil as they planted a host of tulip and daffodil bulbs. I am grateful to the generous way in which they tended our parish’s seven gardens throughout the spring, during the summer and into the autumn. How consoling it is to know that the plantings done in the chilly airs of November’s darkening shadows will burst forth in next March’s vernal brightness.

Meanwhile, there are the area sports fans who may find themselves anxious about the Redskins, disenchanted by the Wizards or excited about the Caps. They nevertheless can look forward to the springing up of the tulips at a time when the Nationals will be engaged in spring training preparing for what promises to be another successful baseball season. Now that the Chicago Cubs’ Curse of the Billy Goat has been lifted, isn’t it about time that a Washington team wins the World Series?

The movements of this November have been distinctive with the end of a presidential campaign. This column is going to press before the outcome has been decided, but like many Americans, I am concerned by the divisive rhetoric and polarized political camps.

I find solace in knowing that our nation’s annual celebration of Thanksgiving is soon approaching, just 11 days from this Sunday. In anticipation of this important day, instituted by Abraham Lincoln in the midst of our nation’s Civil War, I believe that it is helpful to think positively and express gratitude for all the good there is about our nation and the American people.

Certainly when I consider the parishioners of Holy Trinity, positive thoughts flow easily and gratefulness gushes forth. This Sunday, I will present the pastor’s annual “Sermon on the Amount,” which I see first and foremost as an opportunity to express my gratitude to you and to every parishioner for your generous spirit and faith-filled journey. Thank you. Your contribution to the Parish Pledge will serve to sustain our many important pastoral programs.

Like our dedicated gardeners, you are planting the bulbs and seeds for a bright future.

Prayer After the Election Copyright © 2016, Education for Justice, a project of Center of

Concern. Used with permission.

Lord, as we end the election cycle

and look ahead to a new administration,

we pray for healing and wholeness for our nation.

Our bonds of community must be repaired and restored.

Our willingness to listen to one another must be strengthened.

Our respect for every member of our society must be revived.

We pray for healing and wholeness in our nation.

Guide us to move beyond divisive language,

guide us to move beyond angry rhetoric,

guide us to move beyond harsh judgments.

We pray for healing and wholeness in our nation.

Let us reject all forms violence,

let us learn to forgive and reconcile.

Let us model inclusiveness and welcome to all.

We pray for healing and wholeness in our nation.

May we move forward with hope,

may we move forward with faith,

may we move forward with compassion and love.

As we end the election cycle

and look ahead to a new administration,

we pray for healing and wholeness for our nation.

We pray to be a part of repairing and restoring the bonds of community.

We pray to be willing to listen to one another.

We pray that we may respect every member of our society.

Lord, hear our prayers. Amen.

Parish Council Update Holy Trinity’s Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) met in October to review high-priority goals of its standing committees and discuss the creation of a new Parish mission statement that will speak to the parish’s aspirations in a concise and memorable way. Among the committee goals endorsed by the Council for the 2016-17 year are to: Bring new parishioners into liturgical ministry (Worship); Create “ambassadors” to welcome new parishioners (Parish Life); Establish a data development program that provides for a common system for the collection and use of parishioner information (Finance); Develop a calendar of Adult Faith Formation events stretching into 2018 (Education); and Foster better communications and working relationships among all of the various Social Justice ministries (Social Justice).

All parishioners are welcome to attend the Council meeting on Wednesday, November 16 from 7-9:00 pm in McKenna Hall. The Council will host a Parish Leadership Night to finalize a Parish mission statement to discuss how the mission statement will be reflected in the parish as a whole and in its ministries, and to share work done to date on the parish organizational structure and ministry goals.
